Who will say the

Ma Nishtana this year? One of the main highlights of every Pesach Seder is when the young children stand up and ask the Ma Nishtana. For some couples, unfortunately, the question is:

what young children? These childless couples sit at Pesach Sedorim with broken hearts. Hearts so broken that they don’t look forward to this Yom Tov laden with such spiritual richness and beauty. It’s simply too hard for them to sit at a table surrounded by the children of relatives... the children of friends... the children of others. We ask of you to please remember these young couples who, despite their freedom from slavery, are still suffering.

Detroit Brunch

With your help and generosity, you can help Bonei Olam free them from their pain… by elevating their status from childless couples to proud parents.

The Sound of Silence T

RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO

here is a widespread custom to study Pirkei Avos during the weeks between Pesach and Shavuos. The lessons in Pirkei Avos, known also as the Ethics of the Fathers, are contained for the most part in the tractate Avos, one of the books of the Mishna. What distinguishes Avos from other tractates is the topic and focus of the book. Instead of dealing with legal precepts, it deals with how one should lead his or her life. These lessons from our Sages, the ethics of our Fathers, are lessons for all time. In the first chapter (Mishna 17) we find that Shimon, the son of Rabban Gamliel used to say: All my days I grew up among the sages, and I have found nothing better for a person than silence. The virtues of silence are mentioned in other places as well. The Talmud (Megillah 18a) states that A word (is valuated) for a sela (a monetary unit), but silence (is valuated) for two sela’s. Why is silence worth more than speech? Why is there nothing better for a person than silence? The Shelah explains we find that the above lesson from the tractate of Megillah is applied even to the words of Torah. Why is this the case? When a person is engaged in the study of Torah or prayer, the person is in essence standing before G-d. When standing before G-d, we have to be composed. We have to carefully contemplate what we are about to say. Our expressions should be clear and focused. Silence allows us the time to pause and reflect on what we are about to do. It provides us with an opportunity to prepare ourselves so that our words are the most effective they can be. Rather than speaking off the cuff and engaging in discourse that may be less than substantial, we need to be silent for a bit. After we have engaged in some contemplative silence, we are ready to speak effectually. It is customary, throughout the world and in many cultures, to remember those who are no longer with us with a moment of silence. Silence, in Jewish law, is associated with mourning as well. The Aruch HaShulchan (Yoreh De’ah 376:1) writes that those who come to comfort a mourner should not speak to the mourner until the mourner first speaks to him. The reason for the silence, the Aruch HaShulchan writes, is that our comfort of the mourner is to aid him in understanding the passing of his loved was was an act of G-d, and a just action. We must comfort him in his moments 24

of depression. Before we can comfort, the mourner must indicate that he recognizes what happened was G-d’s will. In days of old, a mourner used to begin his conversation with the words “Dayan HaEmes,” “G-d is the true judge.” He indicated that he accepted the judgement of G-d, and then he allowed others to comfort and strengthen him. The silence that comes before any conversation with a mourner gives both the mourner and the comforter time to reflect on the situation. The mourner has suffered a loss, and perhaps his faith has been shaken. The comforter is visiting a mourner to provide him with support and strength in a moment of weakness. By not immediately engaging in pointless chatter, both mourner and comforter have an opportunity to prepare themselves for the dialogue. The mourner does not have to stifle emotions. The mourner does not have to be social. The mourner need not even talk if he does not feel like it. The comforter has to be prepared for his visit with the mourner. He is there not to distract the mourner from what happened. He is not there to provide entertainment. He is there to help the mourner deal with the issues that the mourner wants to discuss. Silence allows both mourner and comforter to collect their thoughts, and then have meaningful, purposeful conversation. Traditionally, the Sefira period is one in which we observe customs associated with mourning. Tragedies befell the Jewish people at this time of the year, and we commemorate the losses appropriately. Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day and Yom HaZikaron, the Memorial Day for those that gave their lives in the defense of the State of Israel are observed around this time as well. While memorial services and speeches help us focus on the losses we have suffered, we can use another tool the Sages have indicated is useful: silence. We can take time out to remember what happened to us, whether we understand it or not. We can take the time to focus our thoughts on how we can strengthen our faith in G-d in the wake of tragedy. We can take the time to contemplate what needs to be said about the tragedies, and how to say it. Silence affords us these opportunities. Silence is truly good for the person. And to rephrase the words of the Talmud quoted above, silence is golden. www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

BIRKAS HA-ILANOS: THE BLESSING OVER TREES IN BLOOM

by Rabbi Doniel Neustadt

R

osh Chodesh Nissan marks the beginning of the season for Birkas ha-Ilanos - the blessing we recite upon seeing fruit trees in bloom. Since this blessing, which extols Hashem’s ongoing renewal of creation, is recited only once a year, its halachos are difficult to remember. Women, too, may recite this blessing since it is not considered a “time-related mitzvah” from which women are exempt. THE TEXT OF THE BLESSING: The text of the blessing, as quoted in all of the early sources, is as follows: Boruch ata Hashem Elokeinu melech haolam shelo chisar baolamo klum uvara vo beriyos tovos vilanos tovim lehanos bahem bnei adam. In several siddurim the word davar appears instead of the word klum. But since all of the early sources indicate that the original text had the word klum, not the word davar, and the reason for the change is unsubstantiated, it is, therefore, proper to follow the early sources and recite the word klum and not the word davar. WHEN IS BIRKAS HA-ILANOS RECITED? The l’chatchilah, preferred time to recite this blessing is immediately upon seeing a fruit tree in bloom during the month of Nissan. Most poskim agree that the halachah mentions Nissan since generally, that is the month in which trees begin to bloom. Accordingly, in an area where they start blooming in Adar, or where they do not bloom until Iyar or Sivan, the blessing should be recited in those months. In the countries where fruit trees blossom in Tishrei or Cheshvan, the blessing should be said at that time. If a tree bloomed in Nissan, but one did not see it until later, he may recite the blessing the first time he sees the tree as long as the fruit of the tree has not yet ripened. Once the fruit has ripened, the blessing may no longer be said. One who saw the trees in bloom during Nissan, but forgot or neglected to recite the blessing, may recite the blessing at a later date but only until the time that the fruit of the tree has begun to grow. The blessing is said upon seeing the actual blooming (flowering) of the tree. The growth of leaves alone is not sufficient to allow one to recite the blessing. 32

Some poskim hold that this blessing should not be said on Shabbos and Yom Tov, since we are concerned that it may lead to shaking or breaking a branch off the tree. All other poskim who do not mention this concern, apparently do not forbid reciting this blessing on Shabbos and Yom Tov. It is customary, though, to recite the blessing only during the week, unless the last day of Nissan falls on Shabbos. The blessing may be said at night. WHICH TREES REQUIRE BIRKAS HA ILANOS? Birkas ha-Ilanos is said only on fruit-bearing trees. If one mistakenly said the blessing on a barren tree, he need not repeat the blessing on a fruit-bearing tree. The poskim debate whether one is allowed to say the blessing on a tree which has been grafted from two species, since the halachah does not permit such grafting. It is preferable not to make the blessing on such a tree. Some acharonim prohibit the recitation of the blessing on an orlah tree. A tree is considered orlah for the first three years after it is planted. Many other poskim, however, permit reciting the blessing on an orlah tree. During the year of shemittah in Eretz Yisrael, it is permitted to recite the blessing even on a tree which - in violation of the halachah - has been cultivated. BIRKAS HA ILANOS - HIDDUR MITZVAH There are several hiddurim mentioned in the poskim concerning this once-a-year mitzvah. According to the kabbalah, especially, this blessing has special significance. Among the hiddurim are: The blessing should be recited on two or more trees. No blessing is said on a single tree. Although the two trees do not have to be from two different species, several poskim mention that the more trees the better. Indeed, l’chatchilah the blessing should be said on trees in an orchard that is planted outside the city limits. The blessing should be recited in the presence of a minyan followed by Kaddish. Before the blessing is recited, V’yehi noam followed by Hallelukah hallelu Keil min ha-shamayim is said. The blessing should be recited at the earliest possible time, which is on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, unless it falls on Shabbos or it is raining. COMMUNITY LINKS

Memories of Pesachs Past BY RUCHIE WEISBERG

I

have very few memories of Pesachs past. In the 1950’s my parents were, so to speak, fresh off the boat! We lived in a small apartment, and we were lucky to have a three-burner stove, one small oven, and one sink. A Pesach kitchen was literally unheard of. Let’s talk food. The menu consisted of: meat, chicken, and potatoes, and if that wasn’t to your liking, there were potatoes, chicken, and meat. Condiments? Forget about it, Morton’s coarse kosher salt, and Domino’s sugar. Seltzer to drink, and if you were lucky, it may have had a squeeze of lemon in it, left over from what was needed for the sponge cake. Ah, but the fish, the fish was divine! We kids actually got to go to the fishmonger’s and pick out our own. No, we didn’t keep it in the bathtub; we watched it get clubbed over the head and gutted right before our own horrified eyes, delightful!! Then our mother ground it, did her magic, and voila, light and fluffy, and let me tell you it put A and B to shame. Horseradish was hand grated by my father, as he stood outside on the wooden porch, while tears rolled down his eyes. Romaine lettuce was for sissies, and one year my father’s “k’zayis” was so big, that a goyishe neighbor had to call an ambulance because we thought our daddy was having a heart attack! Since I write these stories to help buy needy kids shoes for Pesach, let me tell you about my Pesach shoe experience. My brother and I got shoes twice a year, at the start of school and before Pesach. Before Pesach for me meant white patent leather Mary Jane’s. Can you imagine, Pesach was really spring back then. Global warming? What a joke, this year I’ll probably be wearing my boots! I also remember spring coats, an archaic term if I ever heard one, I’ll be wearing my down coat to shul! Anyway, I digress, getting back to shoes. We old timers will remember the fluoroscope, where one stood on a contraption, which was actually an x-ray machine that took a picture of your skeletal foot. This machine was supposedly able to fit you like Cinderella to her slipper. All, I can say is my shoes always pinched like the dickens!!! It turned out to be a bunch of hooey, and all we got was a mild dose of radiation and glow in the dark feet. However, and this is the point of my story, I DID GET SHOES!!!! It made me feel the specialness of the “chag”. How fortunate I was to be born to parents who knew the meaning of “doing without”, but wanted a better life for their children. Won’t you help some child feel special too, with a brand new pair of shoes. No fluoroscopy required . Tizku l’mitzvot! Last year, a few weeks before Pesach, I decided to do something that would be a z’chus for my mother’s neshoma. I contacted Rabbi Shaul Broner and asked him if he, as a representative of Matan B’seser, would distribute funds that I’d collected from family and friends to large families, so that their children would have new shoes for Pesach. I called this project the “ Y’SHOE-AH Foundation” in memory of Chana Bas Yosef. To make a donation, please contact Rabbi Shaul Broner @ 248-968-5646 or send a check payable to “Matan B’seser - Y’shoe-ah Foundation” and send it to Rabbi Broner - 25971 Stratford Place Oak Park, Mich. 48237

There are over 169 different kinds of progressive lenses. How do you know which are best for you?

0RVW SHRSOH ZKHQ WKH\ ÂżUVW JHW SURJUHVVLYH OHQVHV NQRZ YHU\ OLWWOH DERXW WKH RSWLRQV DYDLODEOH There are many things you need to know before you buy progressive lenses. Done right they provide better sight, more comfort and no strain. Done poorly they can be a source of more stress, headaches and poor vision.

0DNH VXUH \RX JHW WKH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ WKH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV DQG WKH ULJKW IUDPHV 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ How lenses are made have changed very quickly as technology has improved our abilities to create better progressive lenses. Digital lenses provide for a wider field of vision, greater accuracy of progression and clear peripheral vision. 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV With progressive lenses especially, millimeters make a difference. Is the reading part of the lens sitting at the exact spot that it should? Does the distance area begin too high or too low? Besides the measurements in the lenses, your posture needs to be taken into account. If your optical professional is not measuring all of the

areas you will be getting a less that optimum visual experience. 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV Most people think frames are all about fashion - how they look. While finding frames that suit you is important, finding frames that will enhance your vision by how it accommodates your lenses is even more important.

EXERCISE FOR DEPRESSION

by Sharon Green

Research suggests exercise is a potent weapon against mild to moderate depression. Physical activity releases endorphins that can help boost mood. Regular exercise is also linked to higher self-esteem, better sleep, less stress, and more energy. Any type of moderate activity, from swimming to housework, can help. Choose something you enjoy and aim for 20 to 30 minutes four or five times a week.

Fact: Exercise Is Good Medicine

Very good studies now show that regular, moderately intense exercise can improve symptoms of depression and work as well as some medicines for people with mild to moderate depression.

Exercise to Change the Way You Feel

For some people, exercise works as well or even better than antidepressants. And you don’t have to run a marathon. Just take a walk with a friend. As time goes on, increase activity until you exercise on most days. The key is finding an exercise you enjoy. If the treadmill seems tedious, try swimming, dancing, biking, or Ping-Pong. Spend time at different activities until you find the ones you begin looking forward to.

Finding a Good Trainer

A trainer can start you off with the right form and help you get more out of your workout and avoid injury. Choose a trainer with experience in the type of workout you want to try. Look for someone who is certified by an accredited program, such as the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, or the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Sharon Green is an insured and certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine who offers classes/training to all ages greensharonr@yahoo.com (248) 730-6006 CPR/AED Certified 42

As Still under the late as 1937, with German influence of Purim and Jewry already prostrate therefore perhaps a little before Hitler’s madness too foolhardy, I will and Germany already attempt to explain my threatening Poland, the position more specifically mainstream Orthodox in this article. I think rabbinate in Poland that we can all agree publicly objected to the that the two main events formation of a Jewish in the Jewish world of state in the Land of Israel the past century were on the grounds that the the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. These two heads of that state would undoubtedly be cataclysmic events changed the present Jewish secular if not even anti-religious. They were correct in that assessment society radically if not even permanently. Yet much of Orthodoxy inexplicably ignores but, since the Holocaust was then an these two events as though they never unimaginable event in their worldview, they continued in their opposition to Jews leaving happened. Because of this past mindset, the of these events are absent on school calendars. Holocaust is more unsettling – theologically, Instead there is a mindset that hunkers back to at least,to Orthodoxy - than perhaps to any an idyllic Eastern European world of fantasy other group in the Jewish world. Much of Orthodoxy chooses to ignore that is portrayed falsely in fictional stories hagiographic biographies and omissions of the issue or to contrive very lame excuses and uncomfortable facts and doctored photographs causes for this catastrophe. In my opinion, there is no human answer to the event itself – to a world that never was. An entire talented and vital society is but the event cannot be ignored. One of the doomed to live in the imagined past and consequences of confronting it is naturally disregard present realities. And if the view an admission that great and holy men can be of the present is unfortunately shaped by wrong in their assessment of current events historical and social disconnect and denial and future occurrences. leaders that it cannot bring itself to admit that. As such, the past cannot truly help to assess the present. A false past is almost as dangerous as having no past at all. Dealing with the State of Israel is an even more vexing issue for much of Orthodoxy. The creation of the Jewish state, mainly by secular and nonobservant Jews, and by political and military means was not part of the traditional Jewish view of how the Land of Israel would again fall under Jewish rule. Since it occurred in the “wrong” way and was being led by the “wrong” people it again shook the mindset of much of Orthodoxy. One of the great and holy leaders of Orthodox society in Israel stated in 1950 that the state could not last more than fifteen years. Well, it is obvious that in that assessment he was mistaken. But again it is too painful to admit that he was mistaken and therefore the whole attitude of much of the Orthodox world is one of denial of the present fact that the state exists, prospers and is the largest supporter

A

of Torah and Jewish traditional religious lifestyle in the world. It is again too painful to admit that our past mindset regarding the State of Israel is no longer relevant. As long as large sections of Orthodoxy continue to live in an imaginary past and deny the realities of the present, such issues as army or national service, core curriculums of essential general knowledge for all religious schools, entering the workforce and decreasing the debilitating poverty and dysfunction of so many families, will never be able to be addressed properly. The solutions are difficult and they cannot be dictated or legislated no matter how popular such steps may appear to be. But the change of mindset to the present must certainly and eventually occur. The Jewish people have always been up to this task and I am confident that we will be able to do so now as well. Reprinted with permission from www.rabbiwein.com.

Pesach

Linking our table to yours..... FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE Makes 16 servings 1/2 cup water 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup white sugar 1 cup unsalted butter

6 eggs 18 (1 ounce) squares bittersweet chocolate

Preheat oven to 300° Grease one 10â€? round cake pan and set aside. In a small saucepan over medium heat combine the water, salt and sugar. Stir until completely dissolved and set aside. Either in the top half of a double boiler or in a microwave, melt the bittersweet chocolate. Pour the chocolate into the bowl of an electric mixer. Cut the butter into pieces and beat the butter into the chocolate, 1 piece at a time. Beat in the hot sugar-water. Slowly beat in the eggs, one at a time. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Have a pan larger than the cake pan ready, put the cake pan in the larger pan and fill the pan with boiling water halfway up the sides of the cake pan. Bake cake in the water bath at 300° for 45 minutes. The center will still look wet. Chill cake overnight in the round pan. To unmold, dip the bottom of the cake pan in hot water for 10 seconds and invert onto a serving plate. Top with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar.
