Jewish Humor The story is told of two men visiting New York City for the ďŹ rst time who come across two Jews wearing long black coats, wide-brimmed hats, with long beards and payos (earlocks). One man turns to the other and says, “What’s that?â€? The second man replies, “Hassidim.â€? The ďŹ rst man responds, “I see them, too -but, what are they?â€? 18

by Rabbi Beryl Broyde

KIRKLAND SIGNATURE / RADER FARMS NATURE’S THREE BERRIES - a frozen mix of Raspberries, Blueberries and Blackberries sold at Costco, bears a BCK Kosher symbol plus the Hebrew words “zakuk l’bedikas tolaim”, meaning that the product must be checked for insects. Please be aware that according to many prominent Kashrus experts, raspberries and blackberries cannot be sufficiently checked or cleaned from insects. Consult your Rabbi. WESTCOTT CANOLA OIL, CORN OIL and VEGETABLE OIL sold at local Save-A-Lot stores currently do not bear an OU, and may be produced by a non-certified company. GOOD & PLENTY LICORICE CANDY in 16 oz. clear plastic tubs, packaged by JLM, Warren, MI, mistakenly bears an OU symbol. This product is not OU approved, and contains carmine, an insect-derived coloring. AN OV SYMBOL (a V inside an O), very similar to the Kashrus symbol of the the Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis, is used by some companies to indicate vegan (vegetarian). One example is Fresh Finds French Fried Onions sold at Big Lots. Usually there is some indication on the label that the symbol is referring to vegan. In case of any doubt, contact the Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis at 314-569-2770. MRS. WEINBERG’S CHOPPED LIVER brand has been purchased by a non-Kosher company, and is no longer a Kosher product. VALUED NATURALS brand products distributed by International FoodSource LLC are no longer under Star-K certification, and will no longer bear the Star-K symbol. Old packages still bearing a Star-K are Kosher. - Valued Naturals Assorted Salt Water Taffy that bears a Star-K was mislabeled and is actually dairy and not Cholov Yisroel. WASABI POWDER imported by ZF SUSHI DEPOT bears an unauthorized Star-K. ALBERT USTER ZURIMIX brand MARSHMALLOW MIX lot # 3128.3 bears an unauthorized Star-K and is not Kosher. It contains a non-Kosher ingredient that had been inadvertently labeled with a Kosher symbol. “THE BAKERY” MARIONBERRY LATTICE PIE sold at Wal-Mart bears an unauthorized Scroll K symbol. This product is not Kosher certified. THE FOLLOWING “THE BAKERY” PIES sold at Wal-Mart contain dairy ingredients (milk or sodium caseinate) and are certified Scroll K Dairy, but some labels erroneously omit the Dairy designation: Banana Creme Pie Caramel Apple Pie Chocolate Creme Pie Pumpkin Pie Sweet Potato Pie 22

BLUE DIAMOND LIME AND CHILI ALMONDS mistakenly has a plain OK symbol instead of OK-D on some one pound packages. This product is dairy, and lists dairy ingredients on the label. DARRELL LEA MILK CHOCOLATE COATED LIQUORICE STRAWBERRY FLAVOR and DARRELL LEA DARK CHOCOLATE COATED LIQUORICE BLUEBERRY & POMEGRANATE FLAVOR (sold at Target) list dairy ingredients (milk and butter oil, respectively), but mistakenly bear a plain OU and also a Kosher Australia Pareve symbol. These products are Kosher Dairy. BLACK & WHITE COOKIES from SUPERIOR CAKE PRODUCTS, sold at Costco, bear OU Pareve on the front but list dairy ingredients on the back. This product is dairy. HEALTH WISE RANCH CRUNCH PROTEIN CHIPS are OU Dairy certified. Some packages mistakenly bear a plain OU without the D. IDEAL SHAPE MEAL REPLACEMENT SHAKE CHOCOLATE AND VANILLA FLAVORS have been inadvertently labeled Kof-K Pareve. These products are in fact Kof-K Dairy. continued on page 24

WESTERN FAMILY brand SWISS GOODIE TRAIL MIX, BKC certified, contains dairy chocolate as indicated in the ingredient list, but the dairy designation has been inadvertently omitted from the label. LIPARI FOODS of Warren, MI is recalling nuts, seeds, snacks and snack mixes distributed from April 5, 2013 to June 11, 2013, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. They were sold under no-brand, Pic-A-Nut, Alex’s Naturals, Zoppitty, and various supermarket labels, and all say “Packaged by JLM Warren, MI 48089”. Details are available at 586-447-3500 or at http:// www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm356621.htm. TOWNSEND FARMS frozen ORGANIC ANTIOXIDANT BLEND sold at Costco, and HARRIS TEETER ORGANICS ANTIOXIDANT BERRY BLEND have been recalled due to possible contamination with Hepatitis A virus. Details are available at 503-666-1780 ext. 1 or at http://www. townsendfarms.com/news. WOODSTOCK frozen ORGANIC POMEGRANATE KERNELS has been recalled because it has the potential to be contaminated with Hepatitis A virus. Details are available at http://www. fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm358740.htm or at 877927-3434. GENERAL MILLS CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH single-serve reduced-sugar bowlpak sold

in foodservice establishments has been recalled due to possible salmonella contamination. Details are available at 800-328-1144 or at http://www.fda.gov/ Safety/Recalls/ucm355309.htm. SALMOLUX INC. has recalled certain of its Smoked Salmon Nova Lox products sold under the Salmolux, Jensen’s or Raley’s names, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Details are available at 253-874-2026 or at http://www.fda.gov/ Safety/Recalls/ucm354852.htm. NAP NANNY GENERATIONS ONE, TWO AND CHILL models of INFANT RECLINERS have been recalled because they contain defects in the design, warnings and instructions which pose a substantial risk of injury and death to infants. Details are available at http://www.napnanny.com/. YOM KIPPUR ALERT: TOMS SHOES canvas and material styles are mistakenly worn by many on Tisha B’Av and Yom Kippur in the belief that they have no leather content. In fact, except for Toms’ special “Vegan” line, all Toms shoes contain a suede leather insole, which can be recognized by its tan color and suede texture. Insoles used in the Vegan line are grey or other colors with a fabric texture and are not leather. The Jewish Month of Elul RABBI BEREL WEIN

T

he serious month of the Jewish calendar is upon us. All months are serious but Elul is just more so. It has no special holidays or commemorative days within it but it certainly serves as the transitional month between the seasons of summer and autumn - of school vacations, trips, camp and the solemnity of the High Hoy Days of the beginning of Tishrei. As such it always occupied a special place in Jewish tradition. It became a time of very intensive Torah in the schools, seminaries and yeshivot of higher Jewish education. Great Chasidic mentors who greeted and advised thousands during the remainder of the year went into private seclusion in Elul, receiving no visitors. Great communal rabbis took leave of their communal and congregational positions for a period of time during Elul to refresh themselves in the atmosphere of Torah learning and piety in the yeshivot of their time and place. An atmosphere of anticipation, introspection and a search for one’s better self was created by the advent of the month of Elul. In our world of 24/7 with its constant pressures of work, finance, family and just getting around to where we wish to go – looking for a parking space in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem is a special form of penance imposed upon us for our misdeeds – almost precludes the desired atmosphere of Elul from reaching us. Nevertheless it is unthinkable that we should approach the High Holy Days without some measure of preparation and introspection. After all, in the long view of matters, it is me and who I really am that determines the value of one’s life and accomplishments. So Elul should be exploited to the extent that we can do so and not simply ignored or dissipated. One of the great aspects of Elul is that it dwells upon the future. Months that contain within them days of commemorations and holidays always possess a necessary emphasis on the history of past events. Elul possesses no such commemorative days. It encourages us to look forward to creating a better future for ourselves, our families and communities. It emphasizes that the misdeeds and sad events of the past should be considered as having ended and disappeared and now we can only look forward to better times and more positive behavior in the new year that now appears over our horizon. The emphasis on introspection that I previously

48

described as being part of the Elul package – and introspection always concentrates on dealing with past events and behavior – is tempered and balanced by Elul’s demand to look forward and deal with the future in a hopeful and positive fashion. The ability to balance the past and the future in our lives is always a difficult task. Dwelling on the past often induces unrealistic and distorted nostalgia which again always cripples our ability to deal with our current lives and our future. Once again, dealing only with the future and ignoring the events and lessons of the past can only lead to frustrations and disappointments when our rosy predictions and seeming certainties turn out to be wrong, useless and even dangerous. Elul sets the right tone. It emphasizes our future while still demanding that a measure of introspection allows one to learn from the past year gone by - and to create a better emotional and psychological frame of mind and soul. Elul is marked by the sounding of the shofar in the morning synagogue prayer services and by the recitation of selichot in the Sephardic and Near Eastern Jewish communities. These customs are meant to internalize within us the opportunities that the month of Elul offers for our spiritual restoration and growth. There are no easy or even proven methods to help this process along within ourselves. Every individual must find his or her way alone. Judaism generally is not a one size fits all faith when it comes to spiritual growth. While we are all bound to perform the commandments of the Torah in their entirety, no explicit guide to finding spirituality in one’s life is granted to us. Elul is a time to search deep into one’s own self for the personal road that we all seek - to become closer to the Creator and to leave a legacy of decency and Jewish commitment to those that will follow us. Elul is truly a special month for all of us. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

HOW ‘BOUT A DRINK? by Sharon Green Do you remember how much water intake is recommended to keep healthy? Sedentary men should drink 3 L (about 13 cups) and women need 2.2 L (about 9 cups). Unfortunately, thirst is a poor indicator of the need to hydrate oneself. Those who participate in a fat-loss program should drink an additional 8 ounces of water for every 25 lbs. they carry above their ideal weight. Of course water consumption should also increase if one is exercising briskly or residing in hot weather. Studies have shown that a fluid loss of even 2% of body weight will adversely affect circulatory functions and decrease performance levels during exercise. What happens when a person becomes dehydrated? Here are the effects:  Decreased blood volume  Increased heart rate  Decreased performance  Sodium retention  Decreased blood pressure  Water retention

 Increased core temperature  Increased use of muscle glycogen  Increased perceived exertion  Decreased blood flow to the skin  Decreased cardiac output  Decreased sweat rate

(Taken with permission from NASM Essentials of Personal Fitness Training, 4th Edition, Lippincott & Wilkins, 2012)

So, for goodness sakes, keep hydrated!! Knock, Knock!

RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

T

he repetitive nature of everything associated with Rosh Hashanah is noteworthy. During the entire month of Elul, we blow the shofar at the end of shacharis (morning prayer). Unlike Matzo, where many have a custom to abstain during the month of Nissan - 15 days before the festival of Passover - and others will not eat Matzo for a month in joyous anticipation of the spiritual crunch, anticipating Rosh Hashanah seems different. Instead of creating excitement by not blowing the shofar, we diminish the level by becoming accustomed to it. Of course, we must prepare ourselves. There is a lot at stake on Judgement Day, but wouldn’t an extemporaneous and unrehearsed blast of the shofar send more of a shiver down the spine and more forcefully a call for repentance, rather than a shofar-sounding ritual performed for 30 days prior that may by now feel quite rote? The Selichos services are also a lead-up to the great day. Sefardic Jews have the custom to recite the pre-dawn prayers for the entire month of Elul. Moreover, Ashkenazic Jews can recite the selichos for more than a week before Rosh Hashanah. Would there not be a consideration that many Jews would get prayed-out from the pre-holiday supplications? Isn’t there a chance that they would get blown-away by the repetitive nature of the month-long shofar exercise? In the Selichos service, we beseech the Almighty as if we were destitute. “Like beggars and paupers we knock on Your door. On Your door, we knock, Merciful and Compassionate One” (from the first Selichos prayer L’cha Hashem hatzedaka). Again, we knock - not once, but twice! Isn’t once enough? Surely G-d is not in the kitchen. He can hear us the first time! My brother-in-law, Rabbi Simcha Lefkowitz, Rabbi of Congregation Toras Chaim in Hewlett tells the following story: A meshulach (a man who raises funds for

56

charity) came one sunny Sunday morning to a large home in the Five Towns of Long Island. Eagerly he rang the bell, and simultaneously knocked on the door. A woman, quite displeased, swung open the ornate portal to her home and, knowing the man’s intent, she began to shout. “What do you want? I never met you in my life! How do you expect me to give charity to someone I have never seen? I’m sorry, but this is my policy and I just can’t give you!” The meshulach was not perturbed. Slowly, he walked around the block and fifteen minutes later he was back at the same door. Again he rang the bell, and again the woman came out shouting. “I told you I never met you in my life! How do you expect me to give charity to someone I have never seen! Didn’t I clearly explain my policy to you?” The meshulach just smiled as he replied. “You are absolutely correct. However, you forgot one small thing. You know me already! After all, we met ten minutes ago!” The weeks before Rosh Hashanah we must be wary that we may have to knock a few times to get into the big door. Of course, Hashem knows who and what we are, but we may be a little foreign to him. The daily shofar blasts, the recital of chapter 27 of Tehillim, L’Dovid Hashem Ori, twice daily in our prayers and the recital of daily selichos are all summarized in the words we recite, “like beggars we knock...we knock on Your door, Merciful One.” We realize that we must reacquaint ourselves with the commitments and the great resolutions that we accepted upon ourselves one year ago. But if we knock once and knock again, ultimately we, too, can smile at the One standing at the door and ask for all our desires. After all, we were just there. And He knows us already!
