ALERTS

 A Service of the COR of Greater Detroit

THE CHODOSH SEASON is fast approaching for Oats, Spring Wheat and Barley. Chodosh Oats may be on the market in the beginning of August, and Spring Wheat and Barley shortly thereafter. Those who want to purchase Yoshon items to store over the Chodosh season should do so now. Please note that all grain and flour products that will be stored should be refrigerated to avoid insect infestation.

KORDAS’ brand BREADS, ROLLS AND BUNS from Metropolitan Baking Co. are K-COR certified and Pas Yisroel (glow-plug method), even if the label does not bear the K-COR symbol, except GREEK STYLE PITA BREAD which is presently not certified Kosher and should have the K-COR symbol on the back covered with a sticker.

S. ROSEN'S DELI STYLE BRIOCHE BUNS (sold at Costco) bears an ink-jetted symbol similar to an OU next to the Best If Used By date. This product is in fact OU certified (and Pas Yisroel - glow-plug method).

DUM-DUMS LOLLIPOPS in all flavors are OU certified, and bear the OU symbol both on the outer bag and on each individual wrapper, except for the “Mystery Pop” flavor which does not have an OU on its wrapper, but is nevertheless OU certified.

SPRING VALLEY POTATO BLINTZES with Lot # 1513MMR7831RE on the side of the box may actually contain cheese blintzes (nonCholov Yisroel), and has been recalled from stores. If you have a package at home, check it before preparing it to be sure it is potato and not cheese.

COLONNA RANCH SEASONING contains milk and is certified OU Dairy, but mistakenly bears only a plain OU without a D.

JALAPENO SEASONED PISTACHIOS from Vacaville Fruit Company mistakenly bears a Star-K symbol on the label and on the company website. This product contains small traces of dairy and should bear a Star-D (non-Cholov Yisroel).

BEST OF THAILAND HOISIN SAUCE bears an unauthorized MK / Manchester Beth Din symbol.

WILD SMOKED SOCKEYE SALMON from Tony’s Smokehouse & Cannery and ALASKA SMOKED SALMON from Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary bear an unauthorized KSA symbol. These products are not Kosher certified.

CRITICAL RULES TO TEACH YOUR KIDS TO HELP THEM STAY SAFE

YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE LESS LIKELY TO PANIC IF YOU TALK ABOUT THESE ISSUES.

• Talking to a stranger. It should be reiterated to children not to get into a vehicle or go with someone they don’t know or know well without a parent’s express permission. In addition, encourage them to yell and run away if they feel scared or uncomfortable and that you as a parent wouldn’t be angry if they made a mistake. They should be told if this does happen it is very important to report it to a parent or adult right away.

Identifying Safe Strangers

Don't assume that your young child knows what the word "stranger" means. Be sure they are aware that a stranger is anyone they don’t know. In a calm but firm manner, instruct them to never go anywhere, get in a car, answer questions, or accept anything from strangers - even if the person seems friendly. Stress the fact that strangers shouldn't be asking children for help or giving them things. Remind them that it's sometimes okay, however, to ask strangers for help.

What happens if you’re not around and your child needs help? Who can they go to for help? We must help our children know who they should approach if they need assistance. For instance, uniformed law enforcement can be a good place to start. Ensure your child knows what a police officer or firefighter looks like in uniform. If a uniformed law enforcement officer isn’t around, they can find a woman with children and approach her or a house with a mezuzah.

Help your child identify a safety net of trusted adults and places, such as stores, schools, Shuls, and homes of neighbors. Discuss safe routes to use on the way to and from school and other destinations, as well as places to avoid.

Benefits of Half Kneeling Benefits of Half Kneeling Kneeling

Kneeling on one knee, or "half kneeling," helps improve balance – it's a great way to mimic being on a single leg, but with more stability.

Half kneeling also trains you to align your pelvis and rib cage, placing you in the most efficient position to engage your abdominals in order to stabilize your trunk, keeping your back healthy.

Starting on R knee: directly under R hip and L shin directly unde r L knee. Your L thigh parallel to floor, L toe pointing forward. Straighten up completely, making yourself as tall as you possibly can. Hold this position until you can steady yourself. Practice reversing R-L until you can transition each side with ease.

Once you are comfortable getting into a half kneeling position you can begin challenging your stability and range of motion with various exercises fr om this position, starting with the following mobility drill:

With or without weights at your sides, SLOWLY rotate in each direction. The idea is to be completely solid throughout your trunk and hips. The only thing that should be moving is your upper body.

So if you could benefit from improved balance and stability, then give the half kneeling position a shot. Clients vouch for it’s effectiveness.
