Playing With Fire BY RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

I

t was the best of times. It was the worst of times. The Mishkan (tabernacle) was finally completed, and the celebration had begun. Ahron the High Priest and his children brought special offerings, and the joy of accomplishment permeated the camp of the Jewish Nation. Then tragedy stuck. Ahron’s two sons, Nadav and Avihu, brought an offering that the Torah characterizes as “an alien fire that Hashem had not commanded. A fire went out from before Hashem and consumed them, and they died before Hashem.” (Leviticus 10:1-3) Varying Talmudic and Medrashic opinions argue as to what exact sin they committed. Some commentaries interpret the literal verse by explaining that Ahron’s children rendered a Halachic (Biblical law) decision in front of their master, Moshe. Others say that they performed their service after drinking wine. Still others argue that their true punishment was deserved at Sinai. They refused to marry claiming that their lineage was so dignified that no maiden could ever meet their standard. Another interpretation is that they began to discuss their future leadership roles that they would secure after the two old men (Moshe and Ahron) passed on. In all these varying opinions a major question must be addressed. If those were their actual sins, why then did the Torah use the terminology “a strange fire that Hashem had not commanded” to describe their transgression? Obviously those words are fit to describe each interpretation that is offered. How? The Dubno Magid would often relate the following parable: After receiving his promotion to captain, a young sergeant was given his new uniform. He was strictly warned by his appointing general. “Officer, this uniform is your badge of honor. Wear it with pride, and never remove it in public! Remember, you represent the king’s elite forces, and your life is now devoted to enhance the honor of his kingdom.” Not long after his commission some seamen in a public park chided the young officer. “We hear you have a large tattoo across your chest reading “I miss my Mom.” The young officer was enraged at this humiliating claim, and disputed it vehemently. He was tempted to strip to the waist, but remembered the stern warning not to remove his coat. Suddenly one of the sailors declared, “we will contribute 500 golden pieces to the King’s treasury if you don’t have the tattoo -- but only if

16

you prove it now!” In a patriotic move that the sergeant felt would surely bring pleasure to the commander-in-chief, he bared his chest, proved his point and collected the 500 gold coins. He ran to the general with the money and expected a commendation. Unfortunately, a shower of abuse greeted the neophyte officer. “You fool! I just lost a fortune because of your stupidity. I bet the Navy admiral 2,500 gold pieces that not one of my soldiers would ever remove their uniforms publicly! “ Perhaps there is a common thread among all the explanations of the sins of Nadav and Avihu. In all of the opinions, they had the best of intentions but their actions lacked protocol and guidance. Actions without protocol can have disastrous results. Nadav and Avihu were considered very holy and pious. But the small degree of over-confidence led to their acting without consort. It led to their demise. Perhaps they felt that they were in a position to render judgment without Moshe, or that a little wine may have enhanced their service. Maybe they felt that marriage was beneath them. In theory they may have been correct. But they made decisions without consultation, advice, or consent. They were looked forward to their own leadership -- a leadership that never materialized. They had the desire to contribute their own fire, according to their own visions, but the Torah considered it alien. The Mishkan was given to the Jews to atone for the sin of the Golden Calf. It was at the Golden Calf where the young nation rushed to judgment without true guidance. As soon as Hashem felt that the self-directed scenario was about to recur in the Mishkan, He made a powerful statement. It was as if the Mishkan had a nuclear charge. When dealing with high levels of radioactivity, one cannot forego the slightest established protocol. If you experiment with fire, especially an alien fire, unfortunately you get burnt. www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

Giving Thanks for Doors Opened BY RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO

S

cavenger hunts usually do not find their way on to the Shabbos preparation “To Do” list maintained by my family. Yet, last week, my wife spent the better part of Friday afternoon running from grocery store to supermarket in the pursuit of . . . dough. We had both forgotten what was unique about this Shabbos. By the time we realized we needed dough, it was too late in the afternoon to start whipping up our own batch, so we had to go with the ready-made sort. After a few stores, my wife was successful and she happily returned home with a more-than-slightly frozen dough. Why, do you ask, we were looking for dough? In two words, the answer is “Schlissel challah.” A custom of old is discussed in a number of places. The Sefer Ohev Yisroel writes there is a custom, the first Shabbos after Pesach, to pierce the Shabbos challah, the loaves, with a key. One reason for this stems from events that occurred in the days after Yehoshua (Joshua) took over the leadership of the nation of Israel. Sefer Yehoshua (5-11,12) states: “and they ate of the old grain of the land on the next day after Pesach, unleavened cakes, and parched grain in the same day; and the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the old grain of the land; nor did the people of Israel have manna any more; but they ate of the fruit of the land of Cana’an that year.” Not long after entering the land of Israel, at the time of Pesach, the nation of Israel was no longer provided with manna from heaven. The nation began to eat from that which grew naturally in the land of Cana’an, the land of Israel. At that point, the nation of Israel had to depend on G-d for the provision of sustenance in a new fashion. Until now, it had been miraculous. Now, each person had to labor and toil and work the land so that their families would be provided for. Sustenance was on the minds of everyone. There is a metaphorical description of that place in heaven from where blessings come. G-d’s blessings, such as health and wealth, are stored behind gates. On the high holidays, we ask G-d to open the gates of heaven for our

24

prayers. At this time of year, right after Pesach, we ask G-d to recall how He opened the gates of sustenance for the entire nation of Israel in the days of Joshua after Pesach. By impressing a key into our challah, we are asking that we too should have the key we need to open the gates of sustenance properly placed and turned for us. The “schlissel,” which is the Yiddish word for “key,” should unlock the gates of sustenance for us just as it was for the nation of Israel after their first Pesach in the promised land. Our entry into the land of Israel brought our nation into a new status. We now had to work for our livelihoods, and our success would not come without divine providence. Whereas the divine providence had been outward and miraculous, now it would be more covert, hiding under the cover of what we term “nature.” With Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, before us, this is a lesson to keep in the forefront. Just as our initial entry into the land of Israel brought the nation of Israel to a new level of appreciating divine providence, so too should the events surrounding the birth of the nation of Israel. Some events were clearly miraculous, others appeared to be natural. Regardless of how the events played out, we must remember, be thankful, appreciate, and pray for the continuance of G-d’s heavenly assistance, in sustaining us as individuals and a nation, physically and spiritually. www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

Links to the Vaad SEFIRAS HAOMER Is it permissible to buy clothing, furniture, and household items during the days of Sefirah? I guess what I am trying to understand is how is Sefiras HaOmer different from the Three Weeks? From a halachic point of view the laws of Sefirah and the laws of the Three Weeks are completely different. During the Three Weeks there is a restriction against reciting the blessing of shehecheyanu. But no such restriction exists for the days of the Sefirah. It is, therefore, permitted to eat new fruit in season and to buy new clothing, dishes or furniture during this time period. Still, there are some communities where shehecheyanu is not recited during sefirah. Some communities are even stricter and refrain from buying new clothes during sefirah altogether, even basics which do not require the blessing of shehecheyanu. Since these restrictions have valid sources — some can be traced as far back as to the Rishonim — they should be upheld by the communities or families whose traditions they are. But those who do not have these customs are not required to observe them, as the Halachah makes no such stipulations. One who was under the impression that it is halachically prohibited to recite shehecheyanu during sefirah, but learned subsequently that this is not the case, does not need hataras nedarim in order to change her custom and recite shehecheyanu during sefirah. We have always kept the mourning restrictions during first half of Sefirah, but this year there is a family simcha that we would like to attend. Is it permissible for us to change our custom and keep the Sefira restrictions during the second half even though we have a longstanding minhag of keeping the first half? It depends where ou live: If you live in a community where everyone follows one custom, then you may not deviate from the accepted minhag of your city. If, however, there is no one accepted custom, then it is permitted to change your custom from year to year. In your case, however, it is unnecessary for you to switch customs: You may attend the family simcha even if you are keeping the restrictions of sefira during that time. 40

Rabbi Doniel Neustadt Halachah Hotline 248-559-5005 x100 Kashruth Product Helpline 248-559-5005 x103 cordetroit@gmail.com www.cordetroit.com

Is it okay to hold get-togethers or parties where music is not played, such as a Melaveh Malka or a women’s get-together? There is no restriction against a Melaveh Malkah or a women’s get together during the days of sefirah if no music is being played. I have heard that it is better for women not to count Sefirah with a brachah. Is this true and if so, what is the source for this halachah? Women are exempt from counting the Omer, as they are exempt from every mitzvah which is timebound. While it is generally permitted for women to fulfill mitzvos from which they are exempt, Mishnah Berurah recommends that women who do count Sefiras ha-Omer should do so without reciting a brachah. He gives two reasons for this recommendation: 1. There is a reasonable chance that they will forget to count one day [since they do not go to shul where the counting is done together with a tzibuur]. 2. Generally speaking, they do not understand the meaning of the words [since in past generations most women were not versed in lashon ha-kodesh]. Nowadays, when most women do understand the meaning of the words, many poskim are of the opinion that women should count and do so with a brachah, provided that their husband or parents remind them of doing so on a consistent basis. This was the custom of the women at the home of the Steipler Gaon, and women may follow that ruling. But this applies only to women of Ashkenazi descent; Sefaradic women may not count sefiras ha-Omer with a blessing at all. What if I cannot remember whether or not I counted Sefirah last night. Must I assume that I did not, and stop counting with a brachah, or may I assume that I did count? One who is uncertain as to whether he missed the previous day’s count, is permitted to count the remaining days with a blessing. Is nail-cutting permitted during sefirah? Yes, it is; only hair cutting and removal is forbidden during sefirah. It is also permitted to tweeze eyebrows or eyelashes and to comb one’s hair even though some hair will get pulled out in the process. Married women may cut hair that is protruding from their head covering. COMMUNITY LINKS
