Have you been thinking about some home improvements? Your home is likely your single biggest asset.

Don’t trust it to just anyone. Milton Roberts Company has been serving Southeast Michigan for over 40 years. Our projects have ranged from million square foot commercial to basement remodels of 300 square feet. They all share one thing in common though - an understanding that no matter what the size or scope, every job we do is given our full attention. We handle all aspects of your job from concept to finished product. If you have an idea, we can make it reality. Others may quote what seems like a great price only to find out your design and drawings are not included and result in significant additional costs. With Milton Roberts your costs are clear up front and include EVERYTHING needed for your project. The only surprise you’ll have is how great our prices are. @koshersales – Trustworthy advice for salespeople and managers that your grandmother would love.

Getting Your Message Heard Y

ou meet this person and you have a small window of time to tell him who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. You bumped into them at the doctor’s office or in line at Starbucks. What do you say to grab their attention and make yourself “unforgettable in a forgettable moment”? Or you are about to sit with the director of purchasing, this is your chance, your one shot at the business. You want your message to get through and be heard. How do you take everything that you do and relay it in a focused, attention grabbing manner? There are 3 things that are essential to relate, otherwise it will leave the other person with questions; questions, that will lead to disinterest in you. A clear picture of what you do, What makes you different than your competition, and The perfect type of customer for your business. What you do - When you meet with people of influence they want to know quickly, “what do you do, how can it benefit me, and what makes you different?” A precise answer is paramount. In my line of work the following is my “What you do” message: “WeSupplyYou is a provider of office supplies, furniture and equipment to businesses and organizations. We work one on one with our customers to build a cost effective system for their office purchases. Orders placed today are delivered the next day, from ink and toner to hanging files and notepads.” How are you different - If your brother in-law doesn’t hold the managing partner title in the company you are speaking with, what makes you stand out in order for the person to consider you and your company? Cost? Service? Experience? In this bullet point you need to give real life examples as well. Short but relatable experiences. “Unlike Office Depot and Staples, WeSupplyYou does not have retail locations, inventory, or floor staff to pay. We take that savings and pass it on to our customers. Our company is based on lower profits in exchange for long term relationships. We like to get to know our clients. By doing so we are able to find solutions to problems our customers don’t even know they had. Recently we analyzed the office supply purchases of an eye surgeon and was able to

COMMUNITY LINKS

|

OCTOBER 2011

lower his monthly expenses on toner alone by over $200. Most people just don’t know, and we are here to educate and help them.” What is the perfect type of customer for your business - Here is the kicker. The person now knows what your company does and how you are different. Until now the focus has been on you and your company, now the focus is on them and their needs. How can what and how you do things with your company, benefit their company? “At WeSupplyYou our picture of the perfect customer are companies that are conscious of the cost of their supplies and value the reliability of the company that is providing it. WSY shines the most for companies that do a good deal of printing by cutting the cost of their toner up to 60%. WSY does not sell reconditioned or remanufactured toner cartridges and all of our products are 100% guaranteed. At a local school we were able to help them cut costs on their current toner, paper, and supply orders that are estimated to save them over the five digit range over the next year.” You cannot possibly give over everything that you do in one meeting or phone call. The challenge is taking that 20 minutes or even 30 seconds that you have their attention, and make a significant impression in a way that he or she understands to the point that they can now relate your message to others. “A sale is not something you pursue; it’s what happens to you while you are immersed in serving your customer.” -Unknown Elliot Grossbard is CEO of WeSupplyYou LLC, a turnkey solution for everything your office and organization needs. For more information on the products and services of WeSupplyYou LLC such as toner, paper, office supplies, janitorial supplies and furniture you can contact Elliot at elliot@ wesupplyyou.com or call (800)425-3514. @wesupplyyou http://www.facebook.com/wesupplyyou @koshersales, EMAIL koshersales@gmail.com

T

he succah, the temporary structure in which we dwell during the Festival of Succos, gets its name from the word sechach, the flimsy covering placed over the frame or the walls of the succah to protect it from the sun. By definition, a succah may not be a diras keva, a permanent structure such as a house or even a shed; it must be a temporary home. The sechach, therefore, may not be a solid roof or a ceiling. Indeed, even the nonpermanent material used for sechach should not be so thick that it would totally block rain from entering the succah. There are two basic rules which govern the type of material that can be used for sechach and the manner in which it may be placed on the succah. The following are the basic rules that govern kosher sechach: • Only a natural plant substance that originally grew from the ground, but is no longer attached to the ground—such as thin slats of wood, loose branches, bamboo or uprooted reeds or stalks—may be used for sechach. Sechach cannot be made out of synthetic materials such as nylon, or out of non-plant materials such as metal or glass. • Sechach may not be made from any item which could possibly be mekabel tumah (become ritually impure). Thus anything which qualifies halachically as a “vessel,” whether whole or broken, may not be used for sechach. In addition, processed plant substances, such as wads of cotton or strips of canvass, are also disqualified, since the processing changes their natural appearance and they no longer resemble the plant from which they were processed. Question: In recent years, specially designed bamboo sechach mats have become popular. Is there any halachic objection to using them? Discussion: While some contemporary poskim are hesitant about permitting bamboo mats for sechach altogether and others are leery about introducing non-traditional forms of sechach, the majority of poskim agree that there is no halachic reason to prohibit using mats for sechach and their use has become widespread. The poskim do require, however, that the threads that bind the bamboo rods together be made from material which is kosher for sechach, since these threads are considered as “supports” of the sechach. Thus, the 38

mats should not be woven with nylon or any other synthetic threads, as those materials may not be used for sechach. The acceptable mats are woven with unprocessed substances, such as flax strands or reeds. If these are difficult to obtain, some poskim permit using mats that were woven with processed cotton threads. Question: Is it permitted to place the sechach on the frame of the succah before its walls are erected? Discussion: No. The succah walls must be put up before the sechach is placed upon them. This is because sechach must be placed on the succah l’sheim tzeil, for the sake of providing shade. If the walls are not up and there is no structure, the sechach’s placement does not “create shade.” According to many poskim, sechach that was placed on the frame before the walls were put up is invalid even b’diavad and must be removed and replaced. Question: Is there a halachic difficulty in using a succah with a metal frame? Discussion: Yes. Although it is permissible to use a metal frame to support the walls of a succah, placing sechach directly on the metal frame is problematic because we follow the opinion of some Rishonim who maintain that any object that directly supports the sechach must also be made from materials that are kosher for sechach. Since kosher sechach cannot be made from metal, l’chatchilah one may not place sechach directly on top of a metal-frame succah. B’diavad, however, such a succah is kosher. In a case where only a metal-frame succah is available, it is permitted to use this type of succah even l’chatchilah.

Tearing Down Walls and Building New Ones By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

Y

om Kippur is in the air. Just a little more time before we hear that haunting melody of Kol Nidrei, a prayer that involves the annulment of vows, ushering in this holiest of days. I once heard from a beloved teacher, that we begin Yom Kippur this way, expressing our understanding of the power of words because of the integral role prayer plays on this day. We will spend a good part of the next 25 hours using prayer to ask G-d for forgiveness, together with all the other requests we make of Him, regarding our hopes and dreams for ourselves and loved ones in the coming year. To pour out our heart to Hashem, we first need to acknowledge, by declaring Kol Nidrei, we recognize that we were not always careful enough with our speech, in fact, we often misused the power of words. Words matter, a vow creates reality, it has substance, and Halachic ramifications. The words we use affect others in profound ways. For example, in the way we talk to our children: “It’s so good to see you.” “I’ve missed you.” “I love you.” “We’re so proud of you.” Words which gently build a child’s budding confidence, words that nourish her soul, conveying the sentiments that she’s understood, accepted, and loved. Yes, words have power. They can create and build. But they can also devastate and damage. Words that cut, slicing through a fragile soul, such as: “You’re so lazy.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” “All you give me is aggravation.” When said by a parent these are words which can haunt a person throughout his life. Our words can build walls, walls that separate us from the people we care about, that separate us from others in our community, and can even separate us from Hashem. In Jewish thought we are told that this happens every time one sins. Each sin forms a brick in a wall, so to speak, a barrier, which divides us from each other, from Hashem, and from our very selves.

44

And yet, just as our actions and words build words, they can also break them down. The force of a sincere apology, the dynamic of genuine repentance, can make the barriers disintegrate. Regarding our relationship with others, this does not necessarily occur right away, but over time, with the right words and attitude, demonstrating real regret, it usually will happen. “I’m really sorry, what I said to you is not true. I feel terrible about it,” goes a long way to repairing a relationship. “Please forgive me, I was wrong,” are words that are capable of initiating the healing process. Regarding our relationship with Hashem, our Torah promises that T’shuva breaks through all barriers. In June of 1987 President Reagan challenged President Gorbachev at Brandenburg Gate at the Berlin Wall. This wall separated East Berlin from West Berlin, communism from democracy and the wall was the symbol of the Cold War that existed then between the Soviet Union and the democratic world. Mr. Reagan turned to Mr. Gorbachev, gestured to the wall, and shouted what would be recorded in history as the words that officially ended the Cold War: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” I have this imagery in my head. Hashem stands right beside us in the days leading up to Yom Kippur, and especially on Yom Kippur itself, and whispers to each of us: “Tear down this wall, the wall that separates us and gets in the way of our closeness.” Hashem asks us to come home, feel the redemption of T’shuva, and jump into His arms, the arms of a loving father who wants nothing more than to hold us and comfort us. So, Yom Kippur is a time of using words to reduce pain, to bring healing, to reconnect with all those from whom we’ve grown distant, family, friends, community, the Jewish people, and Hashem. Piercing the barriers, tearing down walls. And then, we spend the next four continued on page 47

days building new walls, not walls of division but rather walls of connection. The walls of a Succah, walls that don’t separate and isolate, but rather the opposite, walls that frame a family, make a home, in which we sit with our families, friends, and community. We sit there too, with our nation, the entire nation of Israel, past, present, and future, and most importantly, we sit in the Succah feeling the embrace of the Presence of Hashem’s Shechinah. A Reality Check By Rabbi Yehudah Prero

S

ukkos is marked by a unique command to “live” in the Sukkah, a hut-like structure built outdoors. We eat our meals in the Sukkah, and many sleep in the Sukkah as well. The Sukkah is meant to be our dwelling place for the duration of the holiday. Sukkos also marks a change in the mood of the holidays we have during Tishrei. After completing the High Holidays, holidays of solemnity, we have Sukkos, a holiday on which we are commanded to rejoice. The Chida, R’ Chaim Yosef David Azulay writes that there is significance to the juxtaposition of the holidays. During Sukkos, we move to a temporary dwelling outdoors. The Chida says this move sends a message to us. We have just celebrated the holidays of Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. On these days, we have spoken about how spiritual matters should be primary in our lives. We have dedicated ourselves to serving G-d instead of our passions. We have asked forgiveness for our pursuit of earthly pleasures. The Sukkah highlights what we have just experienced. It reminds us that our life in this world is temporary, just as is our dwelling in the Sukkah. G-d is giving us a booster shot so that after the serious times have slipped away, the Sukkah reminds us still about our decision to pursue the spiritual. When we sit in the Sukkah, we are to strengthen our resolve to do that which is right, by reminding ourselves that our goal is to accomplish for life in the World To Come. The Sukkah has further significance. The Torah writes (Devarim 16:13) “You shall observe the Feast of Sukkos seven days, after you have gathered in your grain and your wine.” Why do we observe Sukkos at this harvest time? The Rashbam explains that the key to the answer is another reason the Torah gives for celebrating Sukkos (Vayikra 23:43): “That your generations may know that I made the people of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt.” When we sit in the Sukkah, the Torah tells us, we should remember how G-d provided shelter for the nation of Israel for 40 years after they left Egypt. The nation had no land to call their own. They had to wander and be sheltered by

52

G-d. When we harvest our crops, we may tend to lose sight of how lucky we are that G-d provided for us. The Torah warns us of this danger. It says (Devarim 12: ) Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses, and lived there; and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the L-rd your G- d, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery; who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, where were venomous serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought you water out of the rock of flint, who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers knew not, that he might humble you, and that he might test you, to do you good in the end, and you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.” To make sure that we do not come to the point of denying G-d’s providence, we go out into the Sukkah. We remind ourselves that just as G-d provided for those who lived in the desert with Sukkos to live in, so too did He provide for us, as our harvest. It is time to take a step back and remember who really provides for us. So we not lose sight of the source of our livelihood, G-d gave us the holiday of Sukkos at the time when are most likely to be blinded: harvest time. Lodging in the Sukkah is intended to assist us in clarifying our outlook on life. We remember that life on this world is temporary. We remember that we can’t take it with us. We remember that what we have we got from G- d. The Sukkah is a sanctuary of spirituality. However, the Sukkah, as we know, is a temporary structure. We must make sure that the message the Sukkah imparts remains with us during the long winter months, so that the type of year we asked for on the High Holidays is the one we merit to live.
