SEPARATING CHALLAH: THE PROPER AMOUNTS
S
hulchan Aruch cites challah-baking for Shabbos and Yom Tov as a mitzvah and a worthy practice “that should not be abandoned.” Indeed, it is a time-honored custom for women to bake challah loaves for Shabbos and Yom Tov, both because it enhances kavod Shabbos and kavod Yom Tov and because it is an opportunity for them—by fulfilling the mitzvah of hafrashas challah—to set aright Chavah’s sin on the first erev Shabbos of Creation. For this reason, it is halachically preferable that a woman be the one who separates the challah rather than a man. In this column we will discuss the minimum amount of flour that is required for this mitzvah to apply: Dough which contains more than 3 lb. and 11 oz. (approximately 14 cups) of flour requires separation of challah with a blessing. Some poskim do not permit a blessing to be recited unless at least 4 lb. and 15 oz. (approximately 19 cups) of flour are used.1 Dough which contains more than 2 lb. and 10 oz. (approximately 10 cups) of flour requires separation of challah, but no blessing is recited. Any lesser amount of flour is exempt from challah separation altogether. It is possible that dough which was originally kneaded with less than the prescribed amount of flour would ultimately require separation of challah: If several smaller pieces of dough are combined, they are halachically considered as one. In the following three cases the doughs may be considered as one dough: 1. If the doughs are [or were previously] pressed together tightly enough so that when they are separated they will stick to one another, they are considered as one dough and challah must be separated from one of them. 2. Even if the doughs are not [or were not] pressed together but are placed in one deep utensil and are touching each other, they require hafrashas challah and challah must be separated from one of them. Note that even if the doughs have been baked into bread or cakes and then placed together in one utensil, they will require hafrashas challah at that point. [An oven, a refrigerator or a freezer is
not considered a utensil which combines small doughs or baked goods into one big unit, particularly if the items are individually wrapped.] 3. Even if the doughs are not [or were not] pressed together and are not [or were not] placed in one utensil, but are lying on a counter or on a table and are touching each other and are completely wrapped up in a cloth, they are considered as one dough and challah must be separated from one of them. Note that even if the doughs have been baked into bread or cakes and then wrapped together, they will require hafrashas challah at that point. The following exception to the above rule applies: If there are two batters which have different sets of ingredients and thus taste different from each other, or even if they taste the same but were made by two different people, or even if they were made by one person but she does not want to mix them or combine them, or even if she does not care whether they are mixed but the flours are from grain grown in two separate years—then they are not considered as one dough, even if they are pressed together or touching each other in the same utensil. This information is useful for women who are baking several doughs, each of which contains less than the minimum amount of flour. Women who would like to incur the obligation and fulfill the mitzvah of challah have one of the following three options, which are all l’chatchilah: t They can firmly press the doughs together. t They can place the doughs, while touching each other, in one deep utensil. t They can leave the doughs on the counter or table and completely enwrap them in a towel or sheet. After any one of these options is followed, challah may be separated as described above. 1 Our measurements are based on Gold Medal’s estimate that a 5 lb. bag of flour will fill about 19 cups, or about 3.75 cups per pound. Bear in mind, however, that there is no precise conversion between the weight and volume of flour. The temperature, methods of storage, type of flour, how one fills the measuring cup and whether it is sifted, can all impact on this amount.

Linking our Purim table to yours... “KREPLACH” (pronounced krep-lak...AKA – Dumplings) It is said that kreplach or other foods with hidden fillings are eaten on Purim reminiscent of the surprises and secret meanings wrapped up inside the Purim story. DOUGH: 1 ¾ cups flour
2 eggs
½ tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. oil
In a large bowl combine dough ingredients together. Knead and roll* out thin on floured board. Cut into 3-inch squares or circles. * Dough will be easier to roll if wrapped in a damp cloth for one hour FILLING: 1 cup ground cooked beef or chicken
1 small onion, grated
1 tsp. salt
In a small bowl mix the filling ingredients well. Place 1 tsp of filling in the center of dough pieces. Bring the dough up to cover meat filling and pinch edges together forming a triangle. To keep seams closed, moisten the edges with a little cold water. TO BOIL:
Place in boiling salted water or directly into a pot of boiling soup. Cook approximately 20 minutes until kreplach float to top.
TO SAUTÉ:
Heat oil over medium flame in 10-inch skillet. Sauté boiled kreplach until golden brown on both sides. Yields: 18 Kreplach

The Subtitles of Our Relationships BY DR. JERRY LOB
W
e all know that when we converse with others, the communication is not limited to the spoken word. We communicate, certainly, with the words we use, but we communicate so much more, non-verbally. Our tone of voice, facial expressions, eye contact, even posture, all lend depth to the words, and say a lot, not only about our sincerity, and our feelings about whatever the subject matter might be, they also express even more about the quality of the relationship that exists between the two speakers. A father comes home from work and checks his phone for messages, while saying hello to his children. A child comes home from school eager to tell her mother about someone who hurt her feelings during recess, and is met by someone, who says all the right things, but can’t pull her eyes away from the computer. The words may say “I careâ€?. The actions imply something different. And while this may be the furthest thing from the parent’s mind, the message of “I don’t care that muchâ€? is clearly and unmistakably received. Now, picture the same conversations with RQH VLJQLĂ€FDQW GLIIHUHQFH :KHQ WKH SDUHQW DQG child meet, the child sees his father turn off his phone, or her mother turn to look into her eyes, with the clear and understandable message this time of, “I really do care, you are very important to meâ€?. , UHPHPEHU DV D FKLOG VHHLQJ D IRUHLJQ Ă€OP made in Israel, with English translation, called subtitles, written on the bottom of the screen. The truth is, that in any social interaction that we are involved in, there is an overt communication and a covert one. What is said in words and what is conveyed in more subtle ways. These non-verbal communications are the subtitles of our dialogues. It is especially important to pay careful attention to all the messages we send when we are arguing. Our emotional buttons are being pushed. We may feel hurt, defensive, angry, belittled, disregarded, to name just some of the intense emotions evoked. It LV D YHU\ IUDJLOH VSDFH $QG LI WKH FRQĂ LFW LV ZLWK someone we love, the emotions are all the more intense, and the risk of hurting and being hurt, much greater. A 16 year old boy once told me that,
44
Your dignity is sacred to me
several years earlier, in the heat of a terrible confrontation, his father had said to him, “I’m sorry we ever had you, I wish we didn’t. When I asked the father about these words he replied that he didn’t remember saying it, but that it was certainly possible, because “when I’m angry, watch out. He seemed surprised that it would bother his son “Doesn’t he know that it was just said in anger, I don’t mean it. The boy however, lived these words every day since they were spoken. It is possible though, to have a confrontation with our spouse or our children, that is assertive, with strong expressed emotion, with each party being passionate about his position, and yet, paradoxically, when concluded, there is a greater closeness in the relationship. Yes, it is possible, and this too is about subtitles. When I argue with my wife, or child, even forcefully, but I am careful about the words I use, and I am careful about not using intimidation, neither physical, nor verbal intimidation, and I am careful to not belittle with my tone of voice or gestures (such as rolling my eyes), and I am careful too, to remember the big picture, the importance of the relationship to me, then a whole different translation can be read in the subtitles. If we look at the bottom of this interaction the subtitles say “I love you and respect you and no matter how much I want to win this argument, your feelings matter more to me. Your dignity is sacred to me. The secret of relationships is in the subtitles. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. COMMUNITY LINKS

A Purim Story Hear Conditioning RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY
W
hoever misses the Divine hand that touched the Purim story is not looking. And if he claims that he heard the Megilah, he probably was not listening. Imagine, the Prime Minister draws lots and decides to annihilate the entire Jewish nation. Within 24 hours he has approval from the ruler of the not-so-free-world, King Achashveirosh. Within days, the plot is foiled, the Prime Minister is hanged and his prime target is promoted to replace him! Pretty political. Pretty PLUDFXORXV $QG GHĂ€QLWHO\ divine. Yet Hashem’s name is not mentioned once in the Megilah. Why? Of course, the Megilah is replete with allusions. There are acronyms that spell the name of Hashem, and our sages explain that every time the word “Kingâ€? is mentioned in the Megilah, it has a divine reference. But, still, why does the last book of the Prophets, a Divinely inspired Megilah, have only veiled references to Heavenly intervention? It was a sweltering August day when the Greenberg brothers entered the posh Dearborn, 0LFKLJDQ RIĂ€FHV RI WKH QRWRULRXVO\ DQWL 6HPLWLF car-maker, Henry Ford. “Mr. Ford,â€? announced Hyman Greenberg, the eldest of the three, “we have a remarkable invention that will revolutionize the automobile industry. “ Ford looked skeptical, but their threats to offer it to the competition kept his interest piqued. “We would like to demonstrate it to you in person.â€? After a little cajoling, they brought Mr. Ford outside and asked him to enter a black Edsel that was parked in front of the building. Norman Greenberg, the middle brother, opened the door of the car. “Please step inside Mr. Ford.â€? “What!â€? shouted the tycoon, “are you crazy? It must be two hundred degrees in that car!â€? “It is,â€? smiled the youngest brother, Max, “but 52
sit down, Mr. Ford, and push the white button.â€? Intrigued, Ford pushed the button. All of a sudden a whoosh of freezing air started blowing from vents all around the car, and within seconds the automobile was not only comfortable, it was quite cool! “This is amazing!â€? exclaimed Ford. “How much do you want for the patent?â€? Norman spoke up. “The price is one million dollars.â€? Then he paused, “And there is something else. We want the name ‘Greenberg Brothers Air Conditioning’ to be stamped right next to the Ford logo.â€? “Money is no problem,â€? retorted Ford, “but no way will I have a ‘Jew-name’ next to my logo on my cars!â€? They haggled back and forth for a while DQG Ă€QDOO\ WKH\ VHWWOHG One and one half million dollars, and the name Greenberg would be left RII +RZHYHU WKH Ă€UVW QDPHV RI WKH *UHHQEHUJ brothers would be forever emblazoned upon the console of every Ford air conditioning system. And that is why today, whenever you enter a Ford vehicle you will see those three names FOHDUO\ GHĂ€QHG RQ WKH DLU FRQGLWLRQLQJ FRQWURO panel: HI -- NORM -- MAX. The writers of the Megilah left us with a message that would accompany us throughout our long exile. You will not always see G-d’s signature openly emblazoned upon every circumstance. However, throughout persecution and deliverance, He is always there.
