I

n the Torah, we ďŹ nd Hashem giving Moshe an instruction that shaped our calendar. Hashem said to Moshe and Aharon (Shmos 12:2) “This month should be to you the beginning on the months; it should be ďŹ rst to you for the months of the year.â€? The month that Hashem was referring to is the month of Nissan, the month in which the holiday of Pesach occurs. The Ramban explains the uniqueness of this command and this month. He writes that the reason the month of Nissan is to be the ďŹ rst, the month which is assigned the place as the ďŹ rst month, by which we count all others, is because of the signiďŹ cance of the event which occurred in that month. Nissan is to serve as a reminder of the tremendous miracles that occurred with our exile from Egypt. It is a reminder that we will encounter on a daily basis. When we state, for example, that today is the 29th day of the 12th month, we are stating that it is the 12th month from our salvation from the Egyptians, from the birth of our nation. Hence, we assure that we are continuously reminded of the event that is to remain primal in our lives. The Aruch HaShulchan (Orech Chayim 429:12 ) elaborates on the importance of the month of Nissan. Why was the month of Nissan chosen to be the ďŹ rst? The Egyptians worshiped the kid, a young goat, which is the ďŹ rst of the astrological signs in the zodiac. The kid is also the astrological sign for the month of Nissan. Pharaoh relied heavily on the astrological signs for power and strength. We ďŹ nd by the plague of Barad, hail, that Pharaoh said “G-d is righteous, but I and my nation are evil.â€? However, after the cessation of the plague, he still refused to release the nation of Israel. When the next plague of Arbeh, locusts, arrived, he stood steadfast in his refusal to release the nation. Why the change from contrition to brazenness? The plague of Arbeh, and then Choshech, darkness, when Pharaoh instructed Moshe and Aharon never to appear before him again, occurred when the astrological sign of the kid was coming into power. This period is the month we know as Nissan. Pharaoh believed that as the sign of his god was at its full power, there was no way he would succumb to the G-d of his

28

Nissan

slaves, the G-d of Moshe and Aharon, the G-d that inicted plagues upon him and his nation. Pharaoh knew that he would emerge on top during this month. He was wrong. The month of Nissan is the ďŹ rst month because of its great signiďŹ cance. Not only does it contain the reminder about our miraculous departure from Egypt. It is also signiďŹ cant as it is a clear demonstration of the oneness of G-d and his dominion. The month of Nissan, in which Pharaoh, who relied on this month for success, was defeated, illustrates that it is Hashem who is our G-d in heaven and on earth. It is Hashem who controls, whose divine providence shapes our lives. No other entity has any such power, contrary to Pharaoh’s belief. No other force, whether it is our daily toil and effort or the signs in the zodiac, can affect our lives without G-d’s ďŹ ngerprints on it. Because of the importance of this lesson, Nissan is the ďŹ rst month, the month, by which we count all others. The month of Nissan is upon us. The month which signiďŹ es the power of G-d is here. The month which celebrates our miraculous birth of our nation has arrived. It is our responsibility to recognize what the month of Nissan is all about. In this way, come Iyar, Sivan, and the other months, our reference point has true meaning and signiďŹ cance. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

Fast Facts about Yad Ezra      

With continued high unemployment in our state, Yad Ezra continues to experience record number of families in need of food assistance. Currently, 5% of the Jewish metro Detroit population relies on Yad Ezra for monthly assistance. We have 3,000 clients on our active rolls (1,500 families). Since December 2007, the number of individuals assisted by Yad Ezra has increased by 33%. Through a partnership with MiCafe (Michigan Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly), Yad Ezra volunteers have registered more than 100 Oakland County families for SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) who, prior to meeting with us, did not receive the government entitlement.

Let Yad Ezra purchase groceries with your donation. With Yad Ezra’s buying power, warehouse space and careful attention to pricing, Yad Ezra is able to save client families a significant amount of money while providing them with nutritious and good tasting food. Check out our website www.yadezra.org or call (248) 548-3663 to make a donation or for more info!

4FEFS 4BOEXJDIFT BOE -JWJOH 8JUI +PZ T BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB

he Seder is a place of learning and family, of song and holiness, lots of food, fun, and mitzvos, small children, big children, wise grandparents, laughter, and great seriousness, even awe. It’s also about contradictions. The symbols collide throughout the night. There are symbols of celebration such as matzah and reclining, and symbols of pain such as maror (bitter herbs) and strange dips that serve to remind us of the tears, cement and bricks of our slavery. One interpretation of the meaning of the “Four Questions” speaks to the dueling messages. “Ma Nishtana Haleila Hazeh” – How are we to view this night? Is it matzah or maror? Celebration or mourning, triumph or tragedy? The Matzah itself is a paradox. This simple bread, holy for its very simplicity, is called “the bread of affliction,” slave food, and yet it also evokes for us a memory of the bread that had no time to rise in our rush to taste freedom. Is matzah a symbol of suffering or G-d’s love? So, is the emotion of the night honoring and remembering the sadness, or singing with hope and joy? The answer, of course, is both. As children of Holocaust survivors, my sister and I knew intuitively that while the Seder is firstly the story of slavery in Egypt, redemption, and the birth or our nation, it is also about our own parents’ slavery and redemption. The Seder is a discussion of all of Jewish history. It’s a discussion about the 10 plagues, the splitting of the sea, standing as a nation and hearing G-d’s voice at Sinai, the manna in the desert, and the glory days of the holy Temples in our homeland. And it is also about exile, inquisition, crusades, pogroms, the Holocaust, intifadas, and the incredible miracle of the survival of the Jewish people. And for our family, the incredible miracle of our parents and grandmother. It is as much about our three grandparents who were not there, (for whom my sister and I were named) as about our grandmother who was there, whose very existence was a gift. It’s about the depths of despair and the determination to rebuild, with faith and joy. One of the most moving parts of the Seder centers around the mitzvahs of eating matzah and maror. The Haggadah directs one to recline when eating matzah, but not when partaking of the bitter herbs. I remember thinking many years ago that this business of reclining is like a stage direction for 36 the appropriate emotion during a specific activity. Reclining, an indication of freedom, is a behavioral

expression of the emotion that we should be feeling as we eat matzah. As a symbol matzah may signify pain and joy, but tonight we are directed to feel the joy of G-d’s loving intervention. Maror, on the other hand, we are told, should be eaten without reclining, and so we hear the message that the emotion is sadness, honoring the pain, remembering the loss, feeling the bitterness. Which brings us to to the Hillel sandwich called Korech. It consists of two pieces of matzah and bitter herbs in the middle. So how do we act now? Do we recline or not? Matzah or maror? Sadness or joy? Over the years the power of this moment has grown for me, the moment when I once again look down at my Haggadah and see those words, “The sandwich is eaten while reclining.” Two small words that convey to us a wisdom of a people, a wisdom that has been our national secret and key to Jewish survival, Jewish vitality: While reclining. This is what we declare to G-d, and to our children, our families, friends, neighbors, and perhaps most importantly, to ourselves. As a people we have matzah times and maror times, times of great joy, times of great tragedy. And as families or individuals we too have matzah times and maror times. We don’t expect a life without hardship. This Seder sandwich is life. And it is our whole history. So we will take this sandwich that You, G-d, have given us and we will eat it with joy, while reclining. We eat the entire sandwich with joy because the enveloping matzah provides the context of love that allows us to swallow even the bitter parts with joy. When we feel Your love we know You are our loving Father, and we trust You, even when it hurts, even when it is so painful. This is how our grandparents and ancestors lived – with trust, with love, and with joy. What is Glutamax? Glutamax is a powerful supplement that helps support a healthy liver, immune system, kidneys and intestinal function. It contains the key antioxidant Glutathione, an amino acid that plays a crucial role in healthy immunity. It is the body’s natural defense against harmful chemicals and compounds. Glutathione helps your body repair damage caused by stress, pollution, poor diet, aging and infection.

What is Olive Supreme?

Immune System Supplements: What are they, what do they do? At the forefront of medical research, Maxi Health is always on the lookout for the latest and best supplements for your health and vitality. With the proliferation of viruses and colds all too common in the long winter months, strengthening your immune system is of utmost importance. Maxi Glutamax and Maxi Olive Supreme are two of the most powerful immune system boosters in today’s vitamin market.

Up on the shelf together with Glutamax, is Maxi Olive Supreme - an herbal supplement that combines nature’s most powerful anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal ingredients to form one great product. Constituents found in olive leaf have been shown to be powerful antioxidants. Another important component of Maxi Olive Supreme is Spirulina. Add to that oregano, an herb known for its powerful antioxidants and effectiveness against bacteria and infection, and you have a supplement that is as near to perfection as you could get.

In Conclusion: With the combination of Glutamax and Maxi Olive Supreme, you are giving your body the tools it needs most for a strong, healthy immune system that is well equipped to deal with daily rigors of our stressful lifestyle.

P

arshas Vaera contains the bulk of the Ten Plagues, beginning with the plague of Blood and continuing up to the plague of Locusts. The plagues begin with G-d’s command to Moshe: “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt; over their rivers, over their canals, over their ponds, and over all their gatherings of water, and they shall become blood; there shall be blood in all the land of Egypt, and in the wood and in the stones.’” [Shmos 7:19] Rashi on this pasuk [verse] teaches that it was Aaron, rather than Moshe, was commanded to initiate this plague because the Nile protected Moshe when he was thrown into it as an infant. Therefore, Aaron initiated the plague of Blood and the plague of Frogs (in which the Nile was also smitten). The Gemara comments on this: A person should not cast stones into the well from which he has drunk. This is the principle of Hakaras HaTov [recognizing a favor]. We learn from here that Hakaras HaTov applies even when the doer of the favor is only doing what he is supposed to do anyway. The Nile merely floated the basket. That is the nature of water. It is a law of physics that something lighter than water floats on water. The Nile thus did not go out of its way to do anything special for Moshe. It just did what it has been doing since the beginning of time. And yet, we still learn from here that there is an obligation of Hakaras HaTov. This dispels a common practice among people. It is the nature

52

of people to say: “Why do I need to say ‘Thank you’? Why do I need to have HaKaros HaTov? –He had to do it anyway!” Hakaras HaTov is not measured by the benefactor’s efforts. It is measured by the impact on the recipient. When someone benefits from someone else –- whether the benefactor did or did not need to provide the benefit, he did or did not have to do it, whether it was or was not a bother for him, the beneficiary has a responsibility to recognize that he owes a debt of gratitude. The proof is the Nile River. It merely did what water does and yet Moshe Rabbeinu felt a sense of Hakaras HaTov. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS
