It’s the Thought That Counts BY RABBI YISRAEL RUTMAN
T
he story is told of how the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (d. 1933), was once stopping by a pharmacy, and told the pharmacist how much he envied him. The man was taken aback, and asked what there was to envy? The Chofetz Chaim explained he envied the pharmacist his many opportunities in the course of each day to sell medicines and save lives. The pharmacist responded that he did it to make a living, not out of any altruistic motive. Hearing that, the Chofetz Chaim said to him: “You have to have intention that ‘I am coming to fulfill a mitzvah (Torah commandment) of chesed (kindness) to others and saving lives.’ The profit-making side of it does not devalue the mitzvah, as long as you have the proper intention.” The pharmacist followed the sage’s advice. In the course of time, the pharmacist, who until then had been somewhat distant from his faith, became fully observant. Eventually, he rose to become head of the chesed [charitable service] organizations in his city. This was a basic teaching of the Chofetz Chaim, that even the most mundane activities contain great spiritual potential, there to be exploited, if only we are aware of them. For example, paying the taxi driver at the end of a ride: it can be done merely to avoid being arrested for not paying, or it can be done with the intention of fulfilling the Torah injunction to pay promptly for services rendered. And the taxi driver himself, like the pharmacist, can drive all day long to make money, but he can also have in mind that he is enabling others to reach their destinations. One does not have to be in one of “the caring professions” in order to care. Indeed, there is hardly an occupation or activity that does not involve benefit for others in some way, directly or indirectly. Shoveling the snow from the sidewalk in front of the house: it can be done either to avoid being slapped with a lawsuit by a visitor falling and breaking a limb on your property, or in order to fulfill the mitzvah of watching out for the safety of yourself and others. Giving to charity: it can be done as a tax write-off or to get rid of the person asking for money; or the money can be given for the mitzvah of helping the poor and sick, the widow and the orphan. Smiling: it can be a matter
18
of politeness; or a mitzvah of love thy neighbor. It’s so much the thought that counts. Even an act which is by definition a mitzvah, such as putting on tefilin [phylacteries] or sitting in a sukkah, can lose its meaning if done by rote. It’s like a body without a soul. Whereas even in a situation that would seem to be devoid of any act of kindness and stripped of any spiritual content can, with the right approach, be transformed into a mitzvah. Someone asked a distinguished rabbi that I know to meet with a non-religious friend of his, hoping that the rabbi could influence him to take an interest in Judaism. There was just one problem. His friend had stipulated that he would not be willing to discuss religion with the rabbi. Politics, sports, the weather, yes; religion, no. Nevertheless, the rabbi agreed to the condition. “For him, it’ll be politics or sports or weather. For me, it’ll be Torah.” A friendly encounter with a rabbi who is capable of intelligently discussing things of interest to him might change his mind about rabbis, and the things that interest them. The sage Shmuel said to Rabbi Yehudah: “Smart one! Grab and eat, grab and drink! The world that we are passing through is like a wedding.” It is highly unlikely that Shmuel was training his disciple Rabbi Yehudah for a career in gluttony. Rather, he was exhorting him to be a “smart one,” and to grab all the Torah and mitzvot he can during his stay in this world, which is as fleeting as a wedding. Life is like a wedding in another sense, too. A wedding is food and drink, music and dancing. But if you’re a smart one, you’ll be thinking of the mitzvah of rejoicing with the wedding couple, as well. Then, even the eating and drinking will be a mitzvah. A THING OR TU ‘BOUT SHVAT BY RABBI YAAKOV FELDMAN
Ever wonder what baseball players, for example, do off-season, or what actors do off-stage? It’s only natural to wonder what kind of secret lives such individuals lead. What our people have been curious about this time of the year for millennia is what fruit-trees are doing now. Because we’re coming upon Tu B’shvat, the Rosh Hashanna (“New Year”) of trees. And our old friends are fast approaching the spot-light again. So let’s sneak a peek at the inner life of fruittrees. We ourselves (as well as the trees) have suffered through the very thickest, coldest, darkest part of winter up to now, and are anticipating its end. The night is at long last inching in a bit later, day by day, and we’re actually waking up to light by now. So we’re somehow a bit more settled in our beings and more optimistic. As if our blood were churning within anew, and we were beginning to actually feel our arms and legs again. In a sense, the same is going on within the trees. The “blood”, i.e., resin and sap, is beginning to rise deep in the heart of trees by now, and they too are beginning to sense their limbs about now. And all that is passing along on a very deep and phenomenal level to the frozen-over fruit buds as well. So by the time Tu B’Shvat actually rolls around, winter begins to think of succumbing to the spring. But not quite yet. We’re taught that the seasons of the year correspond to the “seasons” of the day. That fall is analogous to evening-time, the dead of winter to mid-night, spring to dawn, and summer to mid-day. That being so, it follows that Tu B’Shvat is about 3 or 4 AM, since it’s smack-dab in the middle of the winter season. What’s most significant about 3 or 4 AM is that it’s just not clear whether it’s extremely early in the morning, or extremely late at night. And in fact that kind of touches on a distinction our sages make about Tu B’Shvat. They reveal that Tu B’Shvat is the very point at which the tree stops being nourished by the waters of the previous year, and begin to be nourished by the new year’s waters. And since we clearly can’t call the moment when that process starts, it’s sort of like 3 or 4 AM for trees, as far as we’re concerned. We’ll get back to that. Now, a custom has arisen of having a special meal comprised of fruits of the tree on Tu B’Shvat, and to eat them in order of importance (based on their appropriate blessings). 44
The custom is especially prevalent in the Chassidic community, where it’s been tied in with the Esrog (the citron fruit we take hold of on Succot). Some Chassidim candy or pickle the actual Esrog they’d used the previous Succot, and eat it on Tu B’Shvat. While others use the occasion to concentrate their prayers on qualifying for an exceptional Esrog on the following Succot. So all in all we could perhaps understand Tu B’Shvat to be a no-man’s-land of sorts, somewhere in the dark of night, somewhere between winter and spring, somewhere between last year’s water supply and next year’s, somewhere between last year’s Succot and next year’s. But there’s got to be more. There is, and it has to do with the tree’s *fruits*, rather than with the tree itself. For since the production of fruit is the very raison d’etre of fruit-trees, fruit represents aim and purpose. And it stands for our own aim and purpose, since human beings are likened to trees. But what is our aim in life? To deepen in our hearts and spirits our whole lives long. So the point seems to be that what we’re to do on Tu B’Shvat is to realize that we’re all indeed sitting in the very matrix point between our entire past and our entire future. We’re all dwelling in an existential 3 or 4 AM at this moment. And we must determine now what our future will be. Will our dreams of growth and spiritual excellence “bear fruit”, or won’t they? Was last year’s Esrog better than next year’s will be, or vice versa? It seems the best way, then, to insure that we grow and bear fruit ourselves our whole lives long would be to sense the G-d-given resins flowing through our body; to then stretch the limbs of our being outward; and, finally, to envision last year’s Esrog-- last year’s spiritual fruit-- as a rung to use in order to step higher yet, onto an even greater Esrog. May G-d grant us all the capacity to dream dreams of holiness and growth, and allow us the wherewithal to accomplish it in our lifetime. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

Linking our table to yours... VIENNESE APPLE STRUDEL 2 1/4 lb. Golden Delicious Apples 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup chopped almonds
3 tsp rum extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla grated zest of 1/2 lemon 4 sheets filo dough 4 tsp margarine, melted
2/3 cup fresh bread crumbs confectioners sugar, for garnish
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Peel core and cut the apples into 1/2 in pieces. Combine in a bowl with the raisins, sugar, almonds, rum, vanilla and lemon zest. Place a filo sheet on cutting board brush with melted margarine. Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the pastry leaving a 1 in border. Spoon the filling over the bread crumbs. Fold in the short sides to cover about 1 in of the filling.Starting from the long side, roll up the pastry, tucking in the filling. Transfer to the baking sheet and brush with melted margarine. Bake for 30-40 minutes, brushing with the remaining melted margarine after 20 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool on the baking sheet. Sift liberally with confectioners sugar. Links to the Vaad KASHRUS ALERTS by Rabbi Beryl Broyde OCEAN SPRAY CRAISINS in a new 6 – 1 oz. package mistakenly does not bear an OU, but is nevertheless OU certified. DUNCAN HINES MILK CHOCOLATE BROWNIES, which in the past contained cream and milk and stated OU-D on 19.3 oz. boxes, has been reformulated to a pareve formula and now bears a plain OU on new 18 oz. packages. Each box should be carefully checked, because some old formula product is still on store shelves. Many PILLSBURY FROSTINGS which used to be OU-D have now changed to plain OU (pareve) status, even some with names such as Milk Chocolate, Cream Cheese and Butter Cream. Each container should be checked, because some OU-D product is still on store shelves. QUAKER (and GENERAL MILLS) OU-D CEREALS: Since the OU marks both dairy and dairy equipment products as OU-D, we have requested and received from the OU the following current information regarding the status of various OU-D cereals. The OU cautions that even where it states that a product is DE (dairy equipment), the OU does not supervise the cleaning of the equipment between dairy and non-dairy productions, and also that the DE status should be periodically reconfirmed, since manufacturers frequently reformulate their products and may add dairy ingredients. Quaker Cap’n Crunch cereals: Chocolatey Crunch - DE Cinnamon Roll Crunch - dairy Crunch Berries - dairy Crunch Treasures – DE Oops! KIRKLAND SIGNATURE FUNHOUSE TREATS, sold at Costco, is a bag that contains a variety of small individually wrapped candies. Until recently, all the candies in the Funhouse Treats bag were OU certified. Recently, a candy that is not certified was added to the variety, but mistakenly some outer bags still bear the OU symbol. Costco is correcting this error and new bags will no longer have the OU. The candies that bear an OU or OU-D on their individual wrappings are correctly marked and are certified by the OU. AIRHEADS PARTY MIX is a bag of candies that contains taffies and lollipops. The AirHeads taffies are OU certified and bear the OU symbol on each individual taffy wrapper. The AirHeads lollipops are not certified and do not bear an OU, but some of the outer Party Mix bags mistakenly bear an unauthorized OU symbol. BARLEY: The Star-K, cRc and COR Canada have reported that there is currently an infestation issue of worms and crawling insects affecting barley. Consumers are therefore advised that all barley, regardless of brand or hechsher, be checked with one of the following methods: Gently agitate the barley in a white bowl of water. Let the barley soak in the water for 15-20 minutes and then check the surface of the water for insects. If none are found, the barley may be used. Place a small pile of barley – an ounce or two at a time – on a white plate or other white surface. Use a finger or credit card to drag a small amount of barley away from the pile, spreading that barley in a single layer. Visually inspect the spread-apart barley to be sure there are no insects between or under the kernels. Repeat this until the entire pile has been checked. Then do the same for the rest of the barley in the package. Consumers who will store barley or other grains for extended amounts of time are advised to store such products in the refrigerator or freezer so as to prevent infestation. COMMUNITY LINKS

Not Keeping Score BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB
My Rebbi, Rabbi Yitzhock Feigelstock, the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta of Long Beach, had a unique way of advising young couples before they got married. He would meet separately with each of them, sitting first with his student, the new Choson, and say, “You are responsible for 90 percent of the ‘Shalom Bayis’ (marital harmony) in the marriage. Your future wife is only responsible for 10 percent.” And then he would send the young man out and ask for the new Kalah. When she was seated he would first spend a few minutes making small talk, putting her at ease, and then he would tell her, (you probably guessed it) “You are responsible for 90 percent of the ‘Shalom Bayis’ in the marriage and your future husband is only responsible for 10 percent.” You have to understand that Rabbi Feigelstock certainly knew that they would compare notes. When asked about this, he explained that a good marriage, with healthy Shalom Bayis is difficult to achieve, especially in the beginning. Both the husband and the wife need to put in a lot more than 50 percent for the relationship to flourish. And so, he continued, with the couple putting in around 180 percent, hopefully it’ll be enough. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate more and more, his wisdom. Because it’s not only that it takes real commitment and effort to have a close, harmonious relationship, the truth is that married couples are often stuck in an ongoing argument of “who’s working harder?” The Rosh Hayeshiva’s message is really, stop keeping score, it’s not going to be exactly even. Each spouse needs to stay focused on the big picture, the picture of living a life of Shalom Bayis. To be fully committed to making the other feel good about him/herself, good about the marriage, and secure in the knowledge that one has the love and 56
respect of the other. A quick disclaimer. If the situation is that one is overwhelmingly giving and the other is overwhelmingly taking, that might not be such a good recipe for Shalom Bayis. My intent here is to talk to the more common experience, where each is working and contributing in many, perhaps different ways to the relationship, but it may not always be even. It ebbs and flows, sometimes one is giving more, and at other times the other is. One may be feeling more depleted and needs his/her spouse to step up and do more. At these times, if you listen closely, you can hear my Rebbi’s encouraging words, “You’re responsible for 90 percent, she’s only responsible for 10.” Commitment to marriage and the 90/10, not keeping score rule, means giving thought to my relationship. And giving thought doesn’t mean making a list of all the things my spouse must change in order for us to have good Shalom Bayis. It means working on my smile, appreciation, compliments, empathy, and warmth. It means limiting my criticisms, to few and far between, only when necessary, and spoken with gentleness and sensitivity. It means working on patience and humility, and it means working on anger management, and communication, both verbal and nonverbal, being careful of my spouse’s dignity, not rolling my eyes or using sarcasm when upset. And it also means living a life of happiness. It doesn’t mean it will be perfect, but it doesn’t need to be, remember? We’re not keeping score.
