BOB’S RED MILL PRODUCTS bearing an underline-K symbol are reliably certified by Rabbi Avrohom Teichman of Kehilla Kosher of Los Angeles. (Please note that some of the mixes are dairy, and bear a D next to the K.) BOBS CANDY CANES are Star-K certified, and currently are Kosher even when not bearing the Star-K symbol. LA CHOY SWEET & SOUR SAUCE and LA CHOY SWEET & SOUR DUCK SAUCE in 10 oz. jars, produced by ConAgra Foods in Quebec, Canada, were inadvertently labeled without the OK symbol. See http://www.ok.org/consumers/kosheralerts?alert_category=alert for a list of lot codes and “Best by” dates that are Kosher even when not bearing the OK symbol. TRADER JOE’S DARK CHOCOLATE CARAMALLOWS bears an OU-D and lists beef gelatin in the ingredients. The gelatin is OU certified and is derived from Kosher hides. Due to the method of processing, Poskim in the USA and Europe have ruled that such gelatin is considered pareve and may be used with dairy. “CHANUKAH” CHOCOLATES & COINS, etc. should not be assumed to be Kosher without checking for reliable certification. An “18 Billion Happy Hanukkah” chocolate bar from Russell Stover Candies, sold at Bed Bath & Beyond, bears no Kosher marking and is not a Kosher product. (The Bartons “Million Dollar Bar” and Cost Plus “Chanukah Pasta” sold there do bear reliable certifications.) In addition, many Chanukah Chocolate Coins on the market do not bear a reliable certification. KEDEM LIGHT CONCORD GRAPE JUICE BEVERAGE: A very limited number of 22 oz. bottles were mistakenly labeled with 1.5 liter/ 50.7 oz. labels, which state “Non-Mevushal”. The 22 oz. size is in fact Mevushal. DAILY’S COCKTAIL MIXERS, CONCENTRATES, and LITTLE HUG & BIG HUG FRUIT BARRELS DRINKS: The company is discontinuing the OU certification of these products. Consumers should be careful to purchase only product bearing the OU symbol. Daily’s may be contacted at 412-828-9020 x6150 or http:// 16
dailyscocktails.com/connect-with-us/commentinquiry. SMART BALANCE BUTTERY SPREADS are available in many varieties, some of which are dairy and are marked OU-D (due to whey in the ingredients), and some of which are pareve and state OU Pareve. Each product should be carefully checked. In the future, “OU Dairy” will be spelled out and in a larger font, to help avoid consumer confusion. XOCHITL PAPITAS SALT AND VINEGAR POTATO CHIPS has been inadvertently labeled Kof-K Parve. This product is in fact Kof-K Dairy. GOURMET BASICS brand HATCH CHILE POP RINGS is certified as an OU-D Dairy product, as labeled on the front panel of the bag. The back panel has an OU-D next to the words “Kosher Pareve”. The “Pareve” is an error. HAPPY HARVEST brand CANDIED YAMS in 16 oz. cans, sold at Aldi, was labeled with the Star-K in error. This product contains a dairy ingredient. New labels will no longer bear the Star-K symbol. - Happy Harvest Cut Sweet Potatoes in 15 oz. cans correctly bears the Star-K symbol, and is pareve. CHOCOLATE COVERED PEANUTS and HONEY ROASTED CASHEWS manufactured by Barcelona Nut Processing Co. mistakenly bear the Star-K Pareve symbol. These two products are actually dairy. New labels will bear the Star-D symbol. PRICE CHOPPER brand TUSCAN WHITE BEAN HUMMUS bears an unauthorized Star-K symbol. This product is not Kosher, and is being recalled. URBAN ROOTS BRUSSEL SPROUTS was mistakenly labeled with the OK symbol. This product is not OK certified. The Kindness Project Comes to Oak Park MONDAYS WITH MEANING: NEW SERIES!
T
he mitzvos of Bein Adam L’Chavero, which are the mitzvos that govern our conduct toward each other, are exceedingly common in our daily lives. We constantly interact with others - family, friends, coworkers, even strangers we encounter in a grocery store. These mitzvos account for the majority of mitzvos that apply at all times, making the associated halachos imperative for all Jews to understand. For various historical reasons, however, many of these mitzvos are not featured in the Shulchan Aruch or its commentaries. The Mishnah Berurah ( )קנו סימןlists over 20 mitzvos that apply at all times and yet are not mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch. Nearly all these mitzvos fall under the category of Bein Adam L’Chavero. They include: Halbanas Panim (embarrassing others), Ahavas Re’im (loving your fellow), Dan Lekaf Zechus (giving the benefit of the doubt), Shekker (truth and lying) and Lashon Hora (speaking ill of others). These mitzvos remain the least codified and least developed in halachic literature. As a result, they are among the least understood and least accessible mitzvos. This, of course, leaves a great void in our yiddishkeit that must be filled. Partners Detroit helps bridge this gap in knowledge by offering a unique world-class curriculum on these mitzvos created by Partners educator, Rabbi Tzvi Muller. In 2001, together with Rabbi Yitzchak Berkovits, one of today’s leading poskim, Rabbi Muller has developed and taught a comprehensive and multi-level curriculum of these mitzvos. To date, thousands of Jews from all walks of life - from rabbinic scholars to those with no Jewish educational background - have eagerly studied this curriculum through the popular Partners series, “Just Say Know to Judaism”. From this curriculum and a partnership between Partners Detroit and the JCC came the Kindness Project. This unique program offers opportunities for community members across the Jewish spectrum to enrich their hearts and minds through the values, wisdoms and practices of kindness in our tradition. Led by Rabbi Muller, the Kindness Project reaches tens of thousands of metro Detroiters each year through its over 100 programs and initiatives, including “A Study in Kindness” classes, Kind-A-Thons and Kindness Kollections. The program is already well-known throughout the country, and has received the JCC Association’s award for Jewish impact and exemplary programming. This January, Partners Detroit and COJAR will present a selection from the Kindness curriculum, “The Truth About Lying”, as part of its Mondays with Meaning series. In this course, participants will explore the teachings and principles of lying for the sake of peace. This four-part Partners series will be held at the Oak Park JCC, and will begin on Monday, January 6 at 9:30 a.m. Join Partners Detroit and COJAR for an in-depth look at these halachos that affect us every day. 22

WEIGHT TECHNIQUE by Sharon Green
2/28/13 4:42 PM
For the average healthy person, a brisk walk constitutes “weight bearing exercise.” What’s not? Two examples are: swimming and biking. Can you guess why? You got it . . . or did you? Minimal pressure on the joints. Are crunches (abdominals) weight bearing? Yes, your head is the weight. It weighs about 15 lbs. (if you’re smart!). Try not to “tug” on your head, rather gently support the back of it with your hands and slowly engage your tummy muscles to lift your shoulder blades off of the floor. Repeat 8-12 reps, rest, then try again. Proper form prevents excessive stress on the back. Elbows out, chin off your chest and feet, tailbone, & lower back in contact with the mat at all times. When using light hand weights, start with 1-2 lbs. if you’re a healthy individual. Standing with feet shoulder distance apart, slowly (4 seconds down, two up) repeat biceps curls (palms facing up, bring weight to your chest, then down until your arms are almost straight and the back of your hands are at your hips) for 8-12 repetitions. Check your profile in the mirror. Are your kinetic checkpoints in line? (Feet, knees, hips, shoulders, and head). Too easy? Add more weight. Rest a minute and do it again. Continue 1-3 sets. The benefits are maximized when engaging core muscles (pull your navel slightly towards your spine). I stress that this exercise should be done slowly to maintain stabilization. Gaining Respect BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB
O
ne of my favorite teachers of all time, a rabbi, used to tell us, “If you want your children to study Torah, then you should study Torah; if you want them to give charity, let them see you giving charity.” I am also reminded of a beautiful poem on the wall of my pediatrician’s office when I was a little boy, entitled “Children Learn What They Live.” The simple truth it expressed was very powerful -- our children learn from our behavior, not from our lectures, from the way we are, not from what we say. So, if you want your kids to respect you, respect your kids. Model respect to them, by showing respect to your spouse, to your neighbors, to people different from you and don’t forget to show self-respect as well. There are all kinds of ways to demonstrate respect to your children, in the little things and in the big ones. Show them that you care about their opinions, and that while you may not always agree with them, their ideas have value. Always respect their dignity, their need for space or privacy, and never belittle them, or laugh at them. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of respectful discipline. When your children push your buttons, when you feel like you’re losing it, it is then, at that precise moment that you need to model a sense of calm. By maintaining your dignity, by not getting personal, by not hitting or name-calling, you communicate the incredibly important twin messages of love and respect. In effect, you are saying through your actions: “Even though I am angry at you and even if I am hurt, I will not hurt you. I love you.” When you do something wrong, apologize, because this will build trust, and their respect for you will grow. Assertive parenting is not aggressive parenting, and if your children see how careful you are with their fragile souls, they will learn to be careful of others. Assertive parenting also means being firm and not being afraid to disagree, set limits and provide appropriate negative consequences such as time out, grounding, and so on. Your
38
child doesn’t have to agree with you, he/she just needs to feel loved and respected. The parental attitude discussed above begins with the birth of your child. It is the attitude that he/she is a separate entity, not an extension of the parent. It is not the child’s job to gratify the needs of the parent, to be the fulfillment of a father’s unfulfilled dreams or a mother’s never realized wishes. Judaism views the ideal parent-child relationship as one of warmth and closeness as it is the primary vehicle for the transmission of our traditions, values and laws. The Talmud teaches us that this transmission, representing the continuity of our religion, is rooted in the joy and love of its practitioners. Yes, the Torah demands that the child respect his/her parents, but it is the wise parent who knows that forced respect is empty and that true respect grows from within, in an environment of love, approval, and joy. It is our job to help our children respect us, by being worthy of respect, by living lives that we are proud of and by connecting with our kids in a deep, loving, spiritual, joyful way. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. COMMUNITY LINKS

Thank you On behalf of the extended Blumenfeld and Kleinberg families, we would like to express our deepest appreciation and thanks to everyone who contributed during the week of Chazzan Schaja Kleinberg’s Shiva. From the abundance of delicious meals that were being arranged and served to the beautiful Minyanim that took place at our house. The outpouring of support and thoughtfulness from everyone really helped us grieve during this difficult time. We would like to make a donation in honor of all of you in memory of Chazzan Schaja Kleinberg to the Kollel Institute of Greater Detroit. Chazzan Kleinberg touched so many lives he came across during his time in the Oak Park community. Thank you for the stories and anecdotes you have shared with us, on how he touched each and every one he came in contact with. May we only share in simches, and may we all be able to learn from the beautiful lessons and inspiration that Chazzan Schaja Kleinberg’s life represented. May we always have the passion, courage, strength, uncompromised conviction and faith in Judaism as well as in ourselves for all our days to come. With deepest Hakores HaTov and grateful appreciation, The extended Blumenfeld and Kleinberg families

Can A Person Sleep For Seventy Years? BY RABBI LABEL LAM
H
ow odd it feels to look out at a frozen landscape of trees standing as skeletonlike statues, knowing that it is time to celebrate the “New Year for Trees”- Tu B’Shevat. It may make us wonder aloud as we crunch on carobs and down some dates, “What’s wrong with this picture?” The appointed season for the “New Year for Trees” is, on a practical level, a fiscal cut off point to determine which fruits belong to which year. It occurs at that time when the trees are ready to blossom as winter’s water graduates to become syrup through the xylem and phylum. The Talmud relates a famous incident regarding Choni Hamagel. He was troubled by a verse we are all familiar with: “Shir Hamaalos… When Hashem returns the captivity of Tzion, we will have been like dreamers.” Since the time of the exile between the first Beis HaMikdash to the second was seventy years, Choni Hamagel wondered, “Can a person sleep for seventy years?” Choni Hamagel met a young man on the road planting a carob tree. He inquired how long it would take for that tree to bear fruit. The man told him, “Seventy years.” Choni Hamagel asked him if he thought he would be around to reap the benefits of his labor. The man informed him, “When I came into this world, I found a carob tree that others had planted for me. Just as my ancestors planted for me, I plant this tree for my descendants.” Shortly after that brief encounter, Choni Hamagel fell into a deep slumber. Remarkably, he awoke seventy years later to find the grandchild of that farmer picking carobs from the same tree. Choni Hamagel revisited his own community where he had been presumed dead for many years. He heard his Torah being quoted in the Beis Medrash. He even encountered his very own grandchildren, but nobody believed him to be the real Choni Hamagel. He
44
was in a world not his own, so he prayed to taken from that world and, once again, his wish was granted. (Taanis 23A) We imagine that this should have been a dream come true. In fact, it was an intolerable nightmare. Why? The first part of the story is perhaps the key to explain the second. The man planting the tree lived with the accepted reality that we are here in this world to plant. “Those who sow with tears, reap in joy!” In this world of action, we perform tasks whose results are beyond our imagination. Just as we enjoy the benefits and the bounty of sacrifices made by previous generations, we too are receiving and passing on dreams to future worlds. It is not our purpose in this place to reap the results of our investments. We are granted just enough nachas to encourage us to keep on moving and doing. To be a mere spectator in life without an active purpose is an exercise in futility and likely yields a lethal dose of frustration. It is told that Rabbi Shlomo Hyman, zt”l, the first Rosh HaYeshiva at Torah V’Daas, was once giving a shiur on a snowy day. Although there were only two students present, he gave the lesson with the same thunderous enthusiasm as if the room was filled with many more. One of the students told the Rebbe, “There are only two of us here!” Rabbi Hyman answered, “I’m teaching you, your children and all your talmidim. I see thousands here.” One of the students was inspired at that moment to begin a dedicated career of education. There were thousands in the room that day. On Tu B’ Shevat, we honor the vision, the process, and the endless possibility for productive living. Since, as King David says, (Psalms 90:10) “The days of our years are seventy” (25,550 days to be exact), we might appreciate that question differently, “Can a person sleep for seventy years?” Reprinted with permission www.torah.org.
