The True Meaning of Strength BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB

P

arents often struggle with their roles as the heads of the family. Many years ago I met with a very successful businessman. He was the CEO of a large corporation, with companies across several states, employing hundreds. He was in a great deal of emotional pain and he appeared confused as well. Iโ€™m paraphrasing here, but his complaint went something like this: โ€œI donโ€™t understand, I have all these employees that work for me, I run a highly pro๏ฌtable enterprise, and yet my children donโ€™t listen to me, and my family seems to be falling apart.โ€ He described a highly dysfunctional situation, with several of his children involved in behaviors ranging from inappropriate to illegal and even scary, and a marriage that was ๏ฌlled with bickering and unhappy silences. He felt lonely and alone in his family. After meeting with him several times, it became clear that he was attempting to run his family in the same way he ran his business. I told him that heโ€™s a good CEO, but the CEO model is a terrible and ineffective model for a family, โ€œyou canโ€™t be a CEO to your children, you canโ€™t be a CEO to your wife. It works with your employees because if they donโ€™t submit, you ๏ฌre them. Basically, you are managing with the ongoing threat of dismissal, management by intimidation. This, when applied to your family, is toxic, because in families one of the essential goals is forming and nurturing a relationship, a relationship that is based on trust. Intimidation is a clear contradiction to trust building.โ€ What is a marriage without trust, the basic trust that I have that you will not harm me, threaten me, or intimidate me? What, too, is the meaning of family without that same trust? The successful CEO was living a life alone because he had succeeded in creating an atmosphere of terror in his home. His children and his wife were terri๏ฌed of him. You canโ€™t nourish trust, warmth, closeness, connection, and certainly, intimacy, in this environment. Instead, you nurture distrust, disconnection, resentment, and eventually, even hatred. We, as parents, struggle with our role. Families are not democracies. Children donโ€™t have an equal vote. Parents must make decisions and rules, and are responsible for creating a structure, with expectations such as chores, healthy boundaries, and de๏ฌnitions of acceptable behavior. Parents must build a home, a home that is safe for all its members. Parents who are too soft are being irresponsible. So, itโ€™s really a monarchy, so to speak, a monarchy, but not a dictatorship with its connotation of uncaring tyranny. What weโ€™re really looking for is a gentle monarchy, founded on the premise that its leaders love and respect each other, love and cherish 14

each child, and express these feelings clearly, in words, touch, smile, and other ways. But, let us not forget that even with all this warmth, love, and cherishing, it is, nonetheless, still a monarchy. Parents need to be con๏ฌdent, strong, and assertive. The problems arise when strong is confused with mean/intimidating, assertive is confused with aggressive, and con๏ฌdent is confused with arrogant. Parents will sometimes come across as โ€œall-knowingโ€ as in โ€œwe are the parents and therefore we automatically know better than you do.โ€ Itโ€™s more effective (and more true) to communicate the idea that โ€œwe know that weโ€™re not perfect and may be making a mistake, but it is still our responsibility to set the rules. And even if when you are a parent you decide to do it differently, thatโ€™s ok, but for now, weโ€™ll do it this way.โ€ Strong is not mean. It is not ok to demean our children, they donโ€™t belong to us, they are not our property, they are a gift from G-d, and they are our responsibility. When children say to me, โ€œmy mother is mean to me, she makes fun of me to my siblings, she embarrasses me by shouting at me in front of my friends,โ€ it breaks my heart. Because I know that when weโ€™re not careful of our childโ€™s dignity, we do damage to the relationship, and sometimes the damage is irreparable. The true meaning of strength is inner strength, as in the quote from Ethics of the Fathers: โ€œWho is strong, one who conquers and controls his own impulses.โ€ Strength is not the ability to intimidate others so they comply with what I want. Strength is the ability to control my own anger, my need to win, my desire to dominate, and to focus on the human being who is in front of me, my child, and to respond, sometimes strongly, but with deliberation and great patience, and love. True strength goes hand in hand with humility. External strength breeds fear and divisiveness, inner strength repairs injuries and helps build happy families. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. COMMUNITY LINKS

Rabbi Doniel Neustadt Halachah Hotline 248-559-5005 x100 Rabbi Beryl Broyde Kashruth Product Helpline 248-559-5005 x103 cordetroit@gmail.com www.cordetroit.com

by Rabbi Doniel Neustadt

May a woman pick up the phone or turn on the electric lights before fulfilling her Havdalah obligation? Before doing any forbidden weekday activity, even if it is definitely night and Shabbos is long over, a woman must first recite an abridged version of Havdalah - Boruch hamavdil bein kodesh lchol, Only then is she permitted to do forbidden weekday activity. Alternatively, she may daven the Shemoneh Esrei of Maariv and recite Ata chonantanu during Ata chonen. But merely saying shavua tov or gut voch, or even reciting the โ€œGut fun Avrahahmโ€ prayer, is not considered to be a form of Havdalah. Even after reciting Ata chonantanu or Boruch hamvdil a woman may not eat or drink until she hears the brachah of Havdalah recited over a cup of wine (or another appropriate beverage). A friend recently told me that if one or more of my Shabbos candles blew out, I must relight it on Motzei Shabbos. I am wondering if this is halacha or minhag? It is not a halacha, and it is not a universally accepted minhag either. It is a custom which is practiced by some families, and unless you are aware that this is your familyโ€™s minhag, you are not obligated to embrace it. The source for this custom appears to be based on the idea that a mitzvah item should not be discarded in a disrespectful manner. So instead of tossing it away, some adopted the custom to relight it on Motzei Shabbos, thereby โ€œdiscardingโ€ it in respectful fashion. Could you please clarify the halachos of Melave Malka? I have heard that it is a very special mitzvah, but my family never served Melave Malka and I am wondering how to do it properly. Shulchan Aruch rules that it is a mitzvah to partake of a seudah on Motzei Shabbos as a way of taking leave of the Shabbos queen upon her exit. While the level of halachic obligation to eat this meal is less severe than the requirement to eat the three Shabbos meals, the poskim strongly recommend that each person be particular to fulfill this very special mitzvah, which is associated with many segulos and blessings which last all week. According to Chazal, the bone in the personโ€™s body which will be the source of his revival at techyas hameisim receives its nourishment only through the food eaten during Melave Malka. Most poskim, although not all, maintain that the mitzvah of eating this meal applies equally to both men and women. Indeed, the Noam Elimelech is quoted as assuring every woman who is careful to eat something for Melave Malka that she will merit an uncomplicated childbirth experience (easy labor). Lโ€™chatchilah one should wash for Melave Malka over bread and eat some cooked food as well. When it is difficult to 18

do so, or if one does not have those foods accessible, one can fulfill this mitzvah by eating baked or cooked mezonos foods, fruits or other foods as well. It is additionally recommended to drink something hot or warm during this meal. The most preferred time to eat Melave Malka is immediately after Havdalah, since at that time the Shabbos queen is โ€œdepartingโ€ and needs to be โ€œescortedโ€. At the very least one should be particular to eat Melave Malka no later than chatzos. If chatzos has passed, one should still eat Melave Malka until one half hour before alos amud hashachar. There are a number of hidurei mitzvah that are mentioned by the poskim as enhancement for the mitzvah of Melava Malka. Among them: to set the table expressly for this meal, to eat it while still wearing Shabbos clothes, to light candles for it, to recite hamotzi over lechem mishneh, to cook or bake fresh food for this meal, to eat fish during this meal, to sing specific zemiros, to eat it together with others and to bentch over a cup of wine with a zimun. Is it true that haircuts and nail cutting are not permitted on Motzei Shabbos? Are there any other activities that are prohibited on Motzei Shabbos? There is no specific prohibition to cut oneโ€™s hair or nails on Motzei Shabbos, although for one to initially plan to cut his hair or nails on Motzei Shabbos and not lichvod Shabbos might very well be considered a degradation of Shabbos. But in the event that one needs to take a haircut or cut his nails on Motzei Shabbos, it is permissible to do so. In regard to other activities which are restricted on Motzei Shabbos there are various customs: Some have a custom that women do not sew or do any other labor-intensive work on Motzei Shabbos. Others have a custom that they refrain from labor-intensive work until after they have eaten Melave Malka. Others have a custom that permit them to do all kinds of work but prohibit doing work which will earn them money. Still others do not have any custom in regard to work on Motzei Shabbos, and permit both men and thus both men and women are permitted to do any kind of work immediately after Havdalah. Each family should follow their custom. Doing work associated with a mitzvah, however, is permitted according to all customs.

Choose How You Respond BY JOSH LINKNER

www.JoshLinkner.com

W

e all get provoked. An angry associate; a cranky customer; a snarling spouse. In these cases, the primitive part of our brain designed to protect us in the wild kicks in and our autonomic response is to recklessly ๏ฌre back. We lash out, hit below the belt, and respond with uncontrollable emotion. Thatโ€™s where the problems begin. We end up saying things we regret and damaging relationships. The impulsive reaction generally creates far more damage than good and can lead to the undoing of companies, families, and careers. Fortunately, we have a choice. No matter how aggressive the stimuli, we can respond deliberately. Think about your own breathing for a moment. You can control your breath (hold it, speed it up, pace it) or you can let your body run on autopilot. You have the identical choice to make when aggravated. The most successful people pause for a few seconds and then proactively decide how to respond. They recognize their own internal instincts, but then thoughtfully consider a range of options before issuing a knee-jerk response. They think about what would be most 24

productive in that moment. They put their ego aside and deeply consider the path that will lead to the best outcome. They realize that they may not be in control of what comes at them, but are in absolute and complete control of their response. In the game of chess, grandmasters think many moves ahead. When an opponent makes a threatening gambit, the master pauses and considers the full spectrum of possibility. She think about her next move, her opponentโ€™s various reactions, and then, which move should be made for each of the various what-if scenarios. While the game is combative by nature, strong players are deliberate and emotionless at every step of the way. In the coming week, you will likely be provoked by someone or something. Why leave your response to caveman instincts when you can be the grandmaster of your own life? If each of us took that one small step - to pause, evaluate, and carefully think before we react - imagine how much better our community would be. This week, choose your moves wisely and trade argumentative for constructive. Checkmate. COMMUNITY LINKS

Tisha Bโ€™Av: One Heart BY RABBI LABEL LAM

O

ne of the secrets that have been revealed to human beings is that man has the power of re๏ฌning his soul and purifying his mind by way of knowing his Creator, to the point that an elevated spirit and a sublime feeling rest upon him, and then the Creator grants him some form of connection between him and his Creator, and he is worthy of hearing commands from the mouth of The Almighty, as one would hear a fellow man talking. This level we call prophecyNevuah! (Chazon Ish โ€“Emunah and Bitachon) The prophets did not prophecy whenever they wanted to but rather they focused their minds and settled down joyously, with a good heart, and privately, because prophecy does not visit in the midst of sadness but only in the midst of joy! (Rambam โ€“Hilchos Yesodei Torah) The Rambam spells it out that in order for a person to achieve prophecy he needs to be a in an exalted and rapturous state of mind. The Chazon Ish asks a strong question based upon this principle. As we read on Tisha Bโ€™Av the Book of Eicha, itโ€™s hard not to feel the broken heart of the author as he describes the horrors he prophetically envisions surrounding the deconstruction and degradation of the jewel of G-dโ€™s creation with a graphic and poetic punch. Nothing could be more painful and tragic. Now, if we are moved to tears thousands of years later, we can only imagine the angst of the one, who in anticipation of the destruction and the dispersal, knows with perfect clarity the full measure and magnitude of the loss. How is it possible for the prophet Yirmiyahu to be in, and remain in a state of ecstatic joy while, what must have been, a torrent of tears ๏ฌ‚owed from his eyes? How can these two emotions of extreme joy, which is a prerequisite for prophecy, and the ultra-sadness associated with such a brutally honest report, coexist, living simultaneously within the same con๏ฌ‚icted personality? Answers the Chazon Ish that it is not a contradiction at all. King David had scribed, โ€œServe Hashem with fear (awe) that you may rejoice when there is trembling!โ€ Which is it? Rejoicing or trembling? Both? How is that possible? 40

A few short years ago I became aware through an eye witness to an event, of such a situation where both extreme emotions of sublime joy and deep sadness were forced to reside side by side.. The daughter of a young fellow I knew from Yeshiva days many years ago was about to be wed. The date was set. The invitations were in the mail. Unfortunately, in the meantime, the father of the bride was ill and he was deteriorating rapidly. As the great day was approaching, it seemed less and less likely that the girlโ€™s father was going to be able to โ€œmake itโ€ to the occasion. The wedding date was a Sunday and a decision was made to hold the wedding in the hospital on the Wednesday before. So it was, the Chupah, invited guests and all, came to the dying manโ€™s hospital room. Racked with pain and struggling to maintain consciousness the father was able to be present for his daughterโ€™s wedding. I was told that the dancing that took place at the hall afterwards was beyond-beyond blissful as the whole local community, all the friends, and relatives joined in dancing and singing to make that day the happiest day in the life of this bride and groom. The report I received was that the Kallah- the bride herself was aglow with a special transcendent and radiant rapture. To be sure there was both a terrible sadness and sublime joy to be found there together in one heart. As a sad postscript, just a few days later, before what would have been the scheduled wedding date, tragically, the father of the bride passed away. On Tisha Bโ€™Av we can all feel the stinging pain of a lingering sadness and the joy of renewed hope in one heart. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS
