It’s been a distinct honor to represent your family on the Southfield City Council. This year, Southfield voters will be electing a new State Representative to be our voice in Lansing. I’m proud to be a candidate for that office and I hope to earn your support. I have a strong record of service as your City Councilman, a record you can view in detail at my campaign website www.VoteJeremyMoss.com. I’m ready to bring the same energy and enthusiasm I have in City Hall to the State Capitol. Please vote in the August 5th Democratic primary election. (There is no Republican primary for any office in Southfield on August 5th, so please vote Democratic.)

Sincerely,

NOTE: In 2010, there were five Jewish State Legislators from Southeast Michigan. Due to term limits, there could be ZERO next year unless we vote!

Jeremy Moss is endorsed by: Irv Lowenberg, Southfield City Treasurer Andy Meisner, Oakland County Treasurer Maxine Berman, former State Representative for Southfield Paul Condino, former State Representative for Southfield Southfield Councilmen Donald Fracassi, Myron Frasier and Ken Siver Both business and labor: Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and Michigan AFL-CIO

Q

We’re renting an apartment for a week over vacation and part of the agreement is that we can use the air conditioning. I’m dreaming of blasting it around the clock, but my husband feels that it’s not fair to use it any more than we’d use it at home. Is there any limit to what one can use when such an arrangement is made? The owner didn’t mention any limitations.

A

There is no requirement for you to limit your air conditioning usage to the same level you would use at home. One of the reasons people go away on vacation is because they do not want to be limited by their usual standards. When on vacation, people allow themselves to spend money more freely than usual, and landlords are well aware that tenants may use the utilities at their pleasure, without the same penny-pinching that they would do at home. Still, only usage that will actually enhance your stay is permitted. Using the air conditioning (or any other utility) in a manner which is clearly wasteful is not only a violation of bal tashchis but possibly may also be considered “stealing” from the landlord.

Q

I’m always cold, while my office mate is always hot, and we’re constantly disagreeing about whether to open or close the window (my office has a strong breeze all the time). She keeps claiming that, halachically, between Succos to Pesach, the “cold” person gets to make decision and from Pesach to Succos the “hot” person gets to call the shots. Is this true? Is there really a halachah like this?

A

No, there is no such Halachah. Although many people assume so and are constantly repeating it, there is no Halachah anywhere in Shulchan Aruch or in the major poskim which holds that between Succos and Pesach the “cold” person makes the decision against the wishes of the majority and the “hot” person makes

20

the decision from Pesach to Succos against the wishes of the majority. On the contrary, the general rule is that if the people present cannot agree on a reasonable solution, then they must follow the majority: If most people who will be affected by the decision want the door or window open or vice-versa, then the majority wins. A possible exception will be when the decision will negatively affect an individual’s health. In such a case, it would behoove the majority to the bend their wishes on behalf of the individual who may become sick due the open (or closed) door or window.

Q

If a fan is set in a stationary position before Shabbos, am I allowed to press down the button on top so it rotates?

A

If the button is purely mechanical, and there is no electricity involved in its operation, it is permitted. Although the button may be classified as a type of muktzeh known as kli shemlachto li’isur, it is still permitted to move the button so that the fan rotates properly.

Q

Is making ice permitted on Shabbos if it is likely that we will use it (at least some of it) on Shabbos? How about freezing drinks for the meal on Shabbos so that my kids can enjoy them “slushie”?

A

Most poskim are of the opinion that making ice or slushies on Shabbos is permitted so long that the ice or slushy will be drunk on Shabbos. Since a minority opinion disagrees, it is strongly recommended to prepare ice in advance of Shabbos. But if the need for ice rises on Shabbos and it was not prepared in advance, or even if it was prepared but it wasn’t enough, it is permitted to make ice on Shabbos for Shabbos use. Warm Up Your Knee

Stretching can help your leg muscles perform better. Warm up before you stretch, though. You can ride a stationary bike for about 5 minutes, take a brisk 2-minute walk while pumping your arms, or do 1520 wall push-ups followed by the same number of calf raises (description below). It will help you get more out of your workout and lower your risk of injury 2.

There are over 169 different kinds of progressive lenses. How do you know which are best for you?

0RVW SHRSOH ZKHQ WKH\ ÂżUVW JHW SURJUHVVLYH OHQVHV NQRZ YHU\ OLWWOH DERXW WKH RSWLRQV DYDLODEOH There are many things you need to know before you buy progressive lenses. Done right they provide better sight, more comfort and no strain. Done poorly they can be a source of more stress, headaches and poor vision.

0DNH VXUH \RX JHW WKH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ WKH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV DQG WKH ULJKW IUDPHV 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ How lenses are made have changed very quickly as technology has improved our abilities to create better progressive lenses. Digital lenses provide for a wider field of vision, greater accuracy of progression and clear peripheral vision. 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV With progressive lenses especially, millimeters make a difference. Is the reading part of the lens sitting at the exact spot that it should? Does the distance area begin too high or too low? Besides the measurements in the lenses, your posture needs to be taken into account. If your optical professional is not measuring all of the

areas you will be getting a less that optimum visual experience. 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV Most people think frames are all about fashion - how they look. While finding frames that suit you is important, finding frames that will enhance your vision by how it accommodates your lenses is even more important.

Our state of the art facility has the latest technology for the best quality lenses available. We have digital lenses that can be tailored for a person’s work tasks and individual needs, and our measuring process is the most thorough anywhere. Jewish Humor Itzik was returning home from a fishing trip at the Sea of Galilee. He was flying down the highway, going way too fast. He felt secure amongst a pack of cars, all traveling at the same speed. However, it wasn’t long before he saw flashing lights in his review mirror and pulled over. The officer handed him the citation, received his signature, and was about to walk away when Itzik stopped him. “Officer, I know I was speeding,” he started, “but I don’t think it’s fair. There were plenty of other cars around me going just as fast, so why did I get the ticket?” The officer tilted his head and gestured at the fishing gear stowed on the passenger seat. “I see you like fishing,” he said. “Ummm, yes I do... so?” Itzik replied, confused. The officer grinned as he turned to leave. “Ever catch ALL the fish?” 38

At Malbish Arumim, we have a list with hundreds of names of children who are in desperate need of new clothing, a new pair of pants or dress for Shabbos and everyday. Please recognize how greatly you can affect a child’s life, and ensure his or her continued growth. We give those people vouchers to “purchase” clothing in an honorable way. This year a tremendous rise in poverty and the ongoing economic stress has sent many more needy families to our door begging for help. Your donation will go towards giving a voucher for children’s clothing to a needy family. Together, we will bring hope to so many despairing families. ş %NQVJKPI HQT C .CTIG (COKN[ $360 ş %NQVJKPI (QT # 5OCNN (COKN[ $180 ş %NQVJGU (QT # %JKNF $80 ş #P[ #OV /CMGU # 4GCN &KHHGTGPEG $____

In our minds’ eye, it is our effort that brought forth the product, but in reality, we did little but use the machinery already in place.

When we take this huge leap of understanding, we begin to recognize the wonders that are all around us, and the wisdom that is manifest throughout Creation. Most importantly, from this we gain a glimpse of Hashem. For the house itself attests to its Creator. “And if this is the Creation, what does it tell me about my Creator?” From this perspective, nature, science, and the world itself is a source of constant inspiration. The more I understand the wisdom of the world, the more I perceive the greatness of its Creator. By focusing on this, I see Hashem with greater clarity every day.
