A useful workout which engages nearly every lower body muscle group is the lunge. Targeted muscles are glutes, hip flexors, hamstrings and quads, while stabilizers are in the calves, tummy and back. Getting your form right is imperative and hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how (progressions/regressions are in ( ) parenthesis): Take a (large) step forward with just your R foot. Bend BOTH knees as you lower your upper body (the lower your descent, the more intense is this workout), while keeping torso upright to maintain balance. (hold onto support if needed) Now your R shin is perpendicular to ground and your L heel has left the floor. You can stay here for whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called a split set - straightening then bending knees for # of reps, or return to starting position. (work up to # of reps on same side or) Alternate R & L lunges to allow fatigued muscles to recover. (Lunges can also be performed while holding hand weights.) A variation is a backward lunge: Take a (giant) step backward instead of forward. I recommend back lunges be done without weights, and instead extend arms forward to shoulder height upon each landing. Side lunges use different muscles and require further instruction to maintain proper form. As with all exercise consult a doctor if there is a concern.
