POOL Safety 1

Supervise your swimmers: A parent/caregiver must be “within arms reach” of their non-swimming child at all times.

2 3 4 5

Avoid distractions: A Cell phone should be available for emergencies only, not to call or text friends. It only takes seconds for a child to go underwater. Floaties, life jackets and puddle jumpers do not replace a parent being within arms reach of their child. Babies and toddlers have fallen face down and have gone under water in this equipment. Secure your pool: Install a solid 5 foot fence with no gaps or areas that a child could climb over. Make sure the gate is self-closing and selflatching. The latch should be open outward and be out of your child’s reach. Even adults should never swim alone. Teach your child to swim with a buddy and always with a lifeguard or an adult watching. Never assume that another child can safely watch your child in the water.

TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR ‫פרנסה‬ From the heels of ‫ יעקב‬to the soaring of ‫ישראל‬ Per the teachings of ‫ר' שמשון רפאל הירש‬

By the professionals at the Detroit Economic Gemach

Many young men and women emerge from the frum educational process with a strong forward-leaning position toward the life ahead: A proper connection to ‫הקב"ה‬, ready to live a life of ‫עבודה‬, with a basis for raising the next generation '‫בדרך ד‬. When it comes to earning a ‫פרנסה‬, however, some individuals can be on their heels: without the clarity or conviction about what to pursue to provide for their family. This is characterized by a feeling of being dependent on others for opportunities, failing to choose a career path due to uncertainty and doubt, and being dragged through this area of life instead of leading its way forward. The gap between these two positions can be bridged with the lessons from the different names of our third ‫אב‬: ‫ יעקב‬and ‫ישראל‬. The name ‫יעקב‬, according to ‫ר' הירש‬, “signifies a depressed state of mind in which a person feels that he is dependent, failing and ‘limping’ or lagging behind events. Instead of leading the events, he is dragged along after them.” (‫ו‬:‫מג‬ ‫ )מקץ‬From this position, ‫ ר' הירש‬writes, a person literally follows the meaning of ‫יעקב‬: “One who is destined to hold on to the heel” (‫כט‬:‫)וישלח לב‬. That some people arrive in this state after putting much effort into obtaining a frum education and ‫השגחה‬, demonstrates that they do not stand in this position as a result of their own failure or shortcoming. Instead, what is needed is to change one’s stance in this area of life toward the position taught to us by the name ‫ישראל‬. ‫ ר' הירש‬explains the meaning of ‫( ישראל‬derived from the root ‫ שרה‬- being superior/greater) is that '‫ ד‬towers above all. When standing in this position - in contrast to being on one’s heels and getting dragged through life – one resolves to act and relies on '‫’ד‬s greatness and endurance to carry him where needed. The different stance between the two names is shown in parshas ‫מקץ‬. When ‫ יעקב אבינו‬is asked by his sons to allow ‫ בנימן‬to go to ‫מצרים‬, as long as ‫ יעקב‬is in doubt and says he will not send ‫בנימן‬, he is referred to as ‫יעקב‬. But once ‫ יהודה‬impresses on him the necessity of sending ‫בנימן‬, and ‫ יעקב‬resolves to do it, he is referred to by the name ‫ישראל‬. As long as he is in doubt, he is ‫יעקב‬. Once he realized it was necessary and his stance changed, he is ‫– ישראל‬ moving ahead with the renewed strength and courage that is founded upon knowing that '‫ד‬, by His towering greatness and superiority, will carry whatever burden ‫ יעקב‬himself cannot carry. The first step toward changing one’s stance in the area of ‫ פרנסה‬is to resolve to do something about it – set out to find an area to work in and accept Ha-shem as your partner. ‫ ר' הירש‬here quotes ‫ה( תהלים‬:‫)לז‬: “‫ גול על ד' דרכך ובטח עליו והוא יעשה‬- Commit your way to '‫ד‬, and trust in Him and He will act.” Know that from there on, wherever your own abilities and awareness would otherwise fall short, '‫ ד‬picks up. The Detroit Economic Gemach was created to help you on an early step forward. We make interest-free loans to help frum men and women learn a trade, start a business, or get a postgraduate degree, with time to earn a living before payments are due. INTRODUCING OBLIQUES

by Sharon Green, CPT

A lot of focus is placed on training abdominal (core) muscles with crunches and knee lifts, but many people forget the neighboring oblique muscles. The obliques, located to the left and right of your tummy, allow you to bend from side to side and rotate your torso. Strong obliques support the lower back and improve posture. For oblique strength I recommend the Plate Rotation. Here‘s how it‘s done: Sit with your legs slightly bent and lifted off the ground. Hold a plate or weight in front of your abdominals with your arms bent. Leaning back slightly, move the plate to the side and touch the floor with it. Come back up and repeat on the other side. Beginners will do this with heels resting on floor. As with all exercise consult your doctor if there is a concern. Mrs. Sharon Green is a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and senior fitness specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. For a personal training assessment or to join a class call (248) 730-6006. cpr/aed/first aid & insured.

A Day of Rebuilding By Rabbi Label Lam “There is nothing that solidifies and strengthens a nation like the reading of the nation’s own history, whether that history is recorded in books or embodied in customs, institutions or monuments.” (Joseph Anderson) “A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.” (Robert A. Henlein) “That men do not learn much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach.” (Aldus Huxley) “A nation that mourns for its temple for more than 1700 years deserves to see it rebuilt.” (Napoleon to the Jews of France after inquiring about their practice of mourning on the 9th of Av) The 9th of the Hebrew month Av will soon be observed. It is a fast day, and a day of mourning for the 1st and 2nd Temples, 2,500 and 2000 years ago respectively, which were located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, as well as other Jewish tragedies which are connected to this day A story stranger than fiction from a few short years ago left me with a feeling of shock and comfort in one moment. A close acquaintance of mine who neither knows or cares much about Jewish history or custom called me a few days after the 9th of Av. He was distraught about a few things and so I lent him my ear. He was in the middle of planning a move to the western U.S. for business reasons. He needed to sell his house in the New York area and buy a house “out west”. He had already gone to contract on his new home in the new location but the whole deal was hanging on the sale of his house here in New York. He couldn’t afford to buy one until he had effectively sold the other. On the 9th of Av, he received a call from the lawyer of a hopeful buyer of his N.Y. house. Apparently, they had no real serious intent to buy the house and were now casually backing out of an imminent closing based on some technical breach. My friend was devastated. He elaborated on his righteous indignation at having been misled and the great set back he was now enduring because of this sudden disappointment. Then, after a long tirade at the conclusion of his monologue he calmly apologized for all the venting and excused his hostile attitude by saying the following amazing words, “I feel like I’ve lost not just one house but two houses, sorry for all the lamentations!” He didn’t know it was the 9th of Av that this news came to him nor did he know that the book Lamentations is the English Language name for the book Eichah that is read in Synagogue on the 9th of Av. I was amazed by the innocence of his words and comforted by the fact that there is a present reality to the day, and rhythm to history. When tragedy or disappointment is manifest, be it on a grandiose or microscopic scale, the biggest part of the pain is the nagging lack of sense. If the bigger picture somehow comes into view, then the stinger of cynicism is removed and the seed of hope begins to take root. Hope, that just as a parent (as the name of the month indicates – Av – Hebrew for “father”) punishes with love for the purpose of improvement, the same purpose is behind Jewish suffering and tragedy. There is hope for the future. When the Jews of Spain saw that their expulsion in 1492 was on the 9th of Av, they were on a certain level able to take great comfort. In the midst of the bad is buried good. Assured that evil is not random and life is not ultimately chaotic, we can even live with unanswered questions. We learn trust and hope through the study and living of Jewish History. Even though on the 9th of Av we lost both Houses of G-d, and suffered unforgettable tragedy, when we lament, we are intimately attached to our history and can honestly hope for a day of rebuilding. Help reduce inflammation. Turmeric™ BCM-95 (500mg) and Turmeric™ BCM-95 1000 (1000mg) are powerful BCM-95 supplements to combat inflammation. Turmeric contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory that blocks NF-kB, a molecule that plays a major role in chronic disease, from entering the cells. Curcumin is also a potent antioxidant that prevents free radicals from causing oxidative damage. BCM-95 boosts the absorption of turmeric to achieve maximum benefits, some of which include reduced arthritis symptoms, stronger heart health, and improved cognitive function. 9 days Linking our v Table to Yours

INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat oven to 350º. Gently clean the mushrooms and remove the stems & reserve stems. Remove the gills by gently scraping out with spoon. Discard.

Stuffed Mushrooms INGREDIENTS

With thanks to MP!

24 (2-inch wide) cremini or white button mushrooms (about 1 pound) 3 Tbsp olive oil, divided 3/4 tsp kosher salt, divided 1/2 tsp black pepper, divided 2 small stalks celery, finely chopped 1 small shallot, finely chopped 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 2 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded (about 1/2 cup) 1 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated (about 1/4 cup) 1/4 tsp garlic powder Pinch red pepper flakes (optional) 1/4 cup dry white wine or low-sodium vegetable broth 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 large egg

48

Toss the mushroom caps with 2 Tbsp oil, 1/4 tsp each of salt & pepper -Make sure not to break the mushrooms! Arrange the mushroom caps stem-side up on a rimmed baking sheet. Coarsely chop the reserved mushroom stems. To cook the stuffing, heat the remaining 1 Tbsp olive oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the celery and shallot and cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Add the mushroom stems, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, if using, & the remaining 1/2 tsp salt & pepper. Cook until the liquid evaporates and the mushrooms begin to brown, about 10 minutes. Deglaze the pan by adding the white wine or vegetable broth and cooking until the liquid evaporates, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parsley and the panko breadcrumbs. Whisk the mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and egg in a large bowl & add the breadcrumb mixture - stir to combine. Stuff the mushrooms by dividing the filling between the mushroom caps (about 2 tsp per mushroom). The filling may mound up, but press it down to fill the cavity. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the mushrooms are tender, the filling is hot, and the tops are golden brown.
