Words of Wisdom A PARENT’S PROMISES By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

I will remember that I am your Tatty (father) and that I love you.

more patient. I will think often of Hashem’s attribute of erech apayim (slow to anger).

I will remember that you are a child.

I will set appropriate boundaries for you, for your safety, for your growth, for your ruchniyus, (spiritual growth) and I will not shirk my responsibility. And I will remember that it’s OK for you to be upset with me. I do this out of love.

I will find ways to show you that you are loved. I will say “I love you” more often and I will express it in other ways as well, perhaps with touch, tone of voice, smile, look on my face, and by giving of my time. I will not degrade you, laugh at you, ridicule you in any way. I will say “I am sorry” when I’m wrong. I will criticize less and focus more often on the positives in you. I will look for the big picture, keep perspective, keep my eyes on the prize, the prize of a loving, caring, joyful relationship with you. I will remember that you are fragile, that my words and tone of voice can damage and slice through you, that you are soft even when you act hard. I will not be fooled when you act uncaring. I know different and I will remember. I will tell you directly and assertively when I disagree with you, but not in a rage, and not with sarcasm, and with no eye rolling. I will not hit you, no matter what. I will remember the words of Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe, shlita, that in this era it is prohibited to hit our children, that hitting in anger can lead to their hatred. And the words of my Rebbi, the Rosh Hayeshiva Rabbi Yitzchok Feigelstock, shlita, that in this generation we need to follow the approach of warmth, no hitting. I will smile more to you. I will smile more, period. I will be more open to feel joy about you, to revel in your very existence. And I will display this joy more often. I will respect you. I will respect your feelings, your need for space and privacy. I will respect your dignity. I will respect your opinions and your decisions, though at times I may overrule them (especially in your younger years). I will be more patient. I will be more patient. I will be

10 MAY 2011 18

I will remember that you are a work in progress, not a finished product, and while your pronouncements may sound secure, confident, finished, they’re not. I will patiently wait for you, with anticipation and some trepidation, through your journey. I will be less concerned with kibbud av (parental respect) and more concerned with kavod habrios (respect for every human being), after all, you are one of my most precious brios, and I will remember the Mishna that respect comes to those who give it to others. I will choose my battles and try to remember that the battles themselves are not personal, but part of the miracle of your growth. And I will learn to bite my tongue more. I will be more loving to Mommy and always respectful to her. I will remember the look on your face when I’ve said something hurtful to her. I will make more effort to bring joy into our family, to bring to our home a spirit of song. I will remember that no matter your age, you still look to me (as I still look to my father, of blessed memory), and what is important is not so much the information I impart to you, but who I am to you. I will not take revenge when I am hurt. Even if you have intentionally hurt me and even if I am so angry, so very angry, I will not respond in kind. I will remember that I am the parent and you are the child. I will try to find quiet and calm. I will not give you the silent treatment, either. I will ask for your apology, but I will not take revenge. I will laugh more. I will be on the lookout to laugh more with you. At times I will try to laugh at myself. I will remember the sparkle in my father’s eyes when he

Does Your Child Need To Be Uplifted? Don’t wait until a struggle becomes a crisis! You both have too much to lose by waiting and hoping the challenges will just “go away” on their own. You know that your child is too important to take that chance. This is a simple but effective program, and is available at no cost to you! Call us now!

 Mentoring. We work with parents and teachers to carefully match youth with an adult mentor. They spend one hour a week, one-on-one, for one year. No preaching, no teaching, just quality time. This simple program can have a surprisingly positive and profound impact on your child, now and in the future! Mentoring is preventive, powerful, and positive. Every child can benefit from an hour of undivided attention weekly; it can’t always be you. Become a Mentor. Do you have one hour a week to help strengthen the life of a fellow Jew? The goal is simply to go out, have a nice time and create a bright spot in the youth’s week. Call today to find out more about becoming a mentor. Parenting Education. We offer programs to help equip parents with the skills and perspectives needed to build positive, healthy parent-child relationships and well adjusted, happy children. Programs are based on the “planting and building” derech of chinuch of Rav Shlomo Wolbe,‫ זצ"ל‬. Call to schedule a program for your shul or organization and let our knowledge and experience help your group. Become a Partner. With the use of affiliations, volunteers and technology, we have a very streamlined organizational structure which gives every local dollar a national reach. Call to learn more about NASO and the positive impact we are having on the lives of the individuals and families we help. Rabbincal Advisors Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky - National Project YES Advisor Rabbi Shmuel Irons - Local Advisor Rabbi Yakov Horowitz - National Project YES Director Rabbi Avraham Jacobovitz - Program Consultant Our Mission To provide preventive and interventional programs and education to the Torah observant Jewish community; to empower youth, parents, and educators with the skills and perspectives necessary to strengthen Jewish families and their individual members. @koshersales – Trusted sales and sales management advice, your mother would be proud of.

Ask and Observe W

hat is the most powerful weapon in a salesperson’s arsenal that doesn’t cost a dime out of pocket? Inside information? Nope. A nice suit? Uh uh. White teeth? Always recommended, but they won’t seal the deal. The answer is… asking questions. Now before you turn the page and say it sounds far too easy, consider this: A properly prepared, simple question for your prospective client is the most productive and natural way to add them to your roster of satisfied customers. When you ask the right question in the right manner, the person you are meeting with, will understand that you value their needs, and not just your bottom line. He will feel that you respect their time and their business, and that you’re not meeting with them simply to boost your month’s sales total. But a question does more than win over a wary prospective client. A question yields a response – and that response will give you the best insight on how to best service your client. A few suggestions: “What is your company’s biggest concern on a day-to-day basis?” Ask this question to someone in need of furniture for his school district, and his response will direct your next move. If his answer pertains to having shipments arrive in time for the semester, your focus will be on your company’s guarantee for prompt delivery. If his or her reply mentions concerns about the damage of his furniture, you’ll highlight your products’ quality and longterm warranties. And if he or she reveals his desire to keep up with changing technologies, you’ll introduce to him the cutting-edge merchandise your company now offers. Here’s another question you can open with: “How do you keep your competitors on their toes with the products you have in your catalogs?” This lets your prospective client know that you are eager to help him get ahead. He’ll see you as a colleague, a peer, instead of just another salesperson. Now he might be open to adding a new product line that you offer, if he believes that’s his ticket to staying ahead of his competitors. Isn’t that more comfortable than following the guidebook from sales 24

A question yields a response – and that response will give you the best insight on how to best service your client. for dummies by starting a meeting off with a company bio, rattling off your personal experience and background, and capping off with “Here is our catalog”? Asking questions is the best way to forge a connection with a new client, but how do you ensure that the rapport will continue to flourish? For the experienced salesman, relationship selling is the successful way to make a career out of sales instead of merely holding down a job. I rarely refer to my clients as “accounts” – that’s much too stiff and informal. Instead, you will hear a lot about relationships in my articles. And to build a relationship, you have to care about your clients. Asking a well-crafted question is the very first step to building a relationship. The next step is even simpler; it does not require any follow-up questions or heavy lifting. All you have to do now is: Be Observant. Keep your eyes open! I prefer when meeting a current or prospective client it be at a location with food which is a neutral area where everyone is more relaxed and comfortable. (Just watch what you eat, it can sneak up on you…) The second best place is in the client’s own office. Look around. Pay attention to the subtle details on their desk or COMMUNITY LINKS

Getting the right information takes time, recording that information for use in the future takes effort, putting the information into practice, at the right moment.. – “priceless.” bookshelf. What books are on their shelf? What sports team or hobbies are they interested in? What can you tell about his family life from the framed photos on his desk? The most irrelevant detail can help lay the foundation for a rewarding relationship. Case in point: A client with whom I had begun to do business with had an adopted daughter. Once, while visiting her office, I noticed that she was filling out a graduation card for her. My eyes were drawn to the vivid images on the card’s flap: its theme was Disney’s High School Musical. I made an offhanded comment about her choice of card, and it led to a discussion about her daughter’s obsession with the Disney cult hit at the time. As we spoke, I made a mental note about that seemingly irrelevant detail. Two months later, I was given two tickets to High School Musical on Ice, and who do you think was the beneficiary of those tickets? I cannot describe to you how much it meant to my client, nor can I tell you the precise boost in sales I saw in the months that followed, but what I can tell you is that I received a handwritten thank-you card from her and her daughter. Our relationship was solidified, and as an added bonus, I got to make a mother and daughter happy. On another occasion, I sat down in the office of a prospective client to chat. On his desk, I caught sight of a huge ball made out of rubber bands. It was bigger than a cantaloupe; he explained that he had started it sixteen years ago and it was quite heavy! On my way back to the office, I stopped at a dollar store and spotted a bag of rubber bands that COMMUNITY LINKS

Paying attention to such minute details will also help you build relationships within your own company and sales team. As a manager, you need to foster a healthy rapport among your staff. Each time you grab a coffee after a sales call, take note that your rep orders a Grande Skinny Vanilla Latte with two Splendas. Question: If a utensil is too large to fit into the mikveh, may it be immersed part by part? Discussion: Absolutely not. The entire utensil, inside and outside, must be underwater at the same time. This includes: • the handle which is connected to the utensil. (But it is permitted to unscrew the handle before immersion and screw it back on afterwards without immersing it.) • parts of the utensil that do not touch food. • parts of the utensil or handles that are made from material which is exempt from tevilah. While the cover of a pot or frying pan requires tevilah even though it does not come into direct contact with food, it does not need to be immersed together with the pot itself, since it is considered as a separate utensil. Covers or lids of utensils which do not come into contact with food and are used for storage only, e.g., cookie jar lids or cake plate domes, are exempt from tevilah altogether. Question: If the entire utensil must be submerged underwater at the same time, how, practically speaking, can water reach an area of the utensil which is being tightly gripped during the immersion? Discussion: The best way to avoid this problem is not to grip the utensil at all; instead, it may be placed into another, larger utensil, a wire mesh basket or a mesh garment bag and dipped into the water. Once in the water, it should be shifted around to ensure that the water covers every part of the utensil. [Another method is to loosely tie a string to the handle of the utensil and lower it into the water.] If neither option is practical or workable, Shulchan Aruch recommends that the utensil be held “loosely” — loosely enough to allow water to touch all areas of the utensil. Another solution is to rotate the utensil while holding it under the water, so that the water comes into contact with every part of the utensil as it is being rotated. Sometimes, however, these solutions are not practical, as a loose grip may result in the utensil being lost or broken. In addition, the Shach seems to reject this solution on halachic grounds as well. For a utensil that needs to be held tightly, Shulchan Aruch mentions another solution: Before immersing the utensil, one should first “wet his 40

Rabbi Doniel Neustadt 248-559-5005 cordetroit@sbcglobal.net www.cordetroit.com

hand.” There are a number of ways in which this suggestion can be understood: • Wet your hands with sink (or mikveh) water before the immersion. Then pick up the utensil, hold it tightly, and dip it into the water. • Wet your hands with mikveh water only, then pick up the utensil and, while holding it tightly, immerse it in the water. (According to this view, if sink water is used to wet the hands, the utensil may not be held tightly when being immersed.) • Dip one of your hands in the mikveh water, and while leaving that hand in, use your free hand to transfer the utensil into the hand that is in the mikveh water. The utensil may then be held tightly during the immersion. This solution seems to satisfy the opinion of most of the poskim. Question: Does a sticker left on a utensil invalidate the tevilah? Discussion: In most cases, when the sticker should have been removed or will be removed at a later date, the sticker is considered a chatzitzah which invalidates the tevilah and the immersion must be repeated. In the atypical case where the sticker is supposed to remain on the utensil, then the sticker does not need to be removed before tevilah and is not considered a chatzitzah.

saw me or introduced me to others, the sparkle that spoke more eloquently than words of his pride. And I will sparkle for you. I will play more with you. I will give you your own time with me everyday even if only for a few minutes. I will learn more with you. And I will try to make this time warm and joyous and not full of tension and anger. I will be determined to be proud of you. I will see your inner beauty, not your grades or how you look, but your neshama, your goodness, your kindness, your unique strengths, skills, and talents. I will remember that each child is different, and children should not be compared to each other. I will love you because you are, not because you do. And not because of what you give to me. I will attempt to bring more joy into Shabbos and Yom Tov (the holidays) and Judaism as a whole. I will remember that it is my simcha (joy) in Torah and mitzvos that will draw you to them, my enthusiasm that will generate yours, and it is my love of Hashem that will deepen your love of Hashem. I will take an interest in your life. If you share it with me, I will feel joy in your joys and sadness in your sorrows. I will not make light of your feelings. I will take you seriously. I will be available for you and will be respectful if you choose not to share.

I will not look at you with disgust. I will not call you names. You are my child. I will not try to break your spirit. I will try to embrace, celebrate and guide your spirit. I will not ignore your suffering. I will put aside my work and my tiredness and my chessed work and even my learning to be there for you, whenever you need me. You are my most important mitzvah. I will look deep into myself and remember how painful childhood and adolescence can be, and I will honor you and support you. I will not abandon you when you need me most, even when it feels like you are pushing me away. I will have more fun with you and I will remember that our shared laughter and love brings the Shechina, G-d’s Presence. I will remember that I am your Tatty, and that I love you.

The Three Weeks Harnessing Powers

R abb i Yeh u dah P rer o

B

eginning with the 17th day of the month of Tamuz, upon which we fast, the nation of Israel observes a three week period of mourning, which concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av. During these three weeks, great tragedies befell the nation of Israel, the greatest of which was the destruction of both the first and second Bais HaMikdosh, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The B'nai Yisaschar, in describing the significance of the months of Tamuz and Av, writes that each of these months represents a specific power or sense in mankind. Tamuz represents the power of sight, and Av represents the power of speech. The importance of recognizing these attributes in these months is only underscored by looking at how these months began their association with sorrow and tragedy. A few weeks ago, we read in the weekly Parsha how Moshe sent spies to scout out the land of Cana'an, the land that the nation of Israel was destined to enter and to settle in as their homeland. Spies were selected from each of the tribes. These men were each great in their own right, and collectively were a group of pious G-d-fearing men. This group of spies began their journey at the very end of the month of Sivan. The entire month of Tamuz was spent viewing the land, taking in the sights of the terrain, the inhabitants, and the cities and towns. In the month of Av, these spies returned. Unfortunately, although all of these men started their journey as righteous, their report about the land clearly indicated their lack of faith in G-d. They all, except for Calev and Yehoshua, stated that they would not be able to challenge the inhabitants of the land. They provided what the Torah terms "Can evil" report, that caused the nation to panic and regret leaving Egypt. For

this blatant lack of faith in G-d, the failure to recognize all the great miracles that He had done for the nation until that point, the entire nation was punished. The spies died from a plague. The nation had to spend 40 years in the desert before they would be allowed to enter the land that they so foolishly feared. And the entire generation of men alive at the time would never merit entering the land. The day on which this occurred was the 9th of Av. During the month of Tamuz, the spies were engaged in an extensive use of their power of sight. They viewed all they had to see about the land. In the month of Av, the spies had to use their power of speech to report that which they had viewed. In both instances, the spies could have put these powers to good use. They could have construed what they saw in a positive light, instead of attributing to it the negative characteristics they subsequently reported. This report, also, could have been positive, focusing on the great benefit that was to come to the nation, of course with G-d's assistance. Yet, the spies abused these two powers, an abuse which resulted in a downfall for the entire nation of Israel. This downfall set the stage for these two months being months of sadness for all time. During the Three Week period, it is up to us to recognize the powers that these months represent. We, if we use our powers of sight and speech appropriately, can rectify the sorrowful situation that began with the spies. If we make sure we only watch that which is befitting out pure eyes, and refrain from uttering words that only serve to defile our lips, we will bring ourselves closer to the time when these two months will be turned into months of joy.

We, if we use our powers of sight and speech appropriately, can rectify the sorrowful situation that began with the spies.

JEREMY MOSS for Southfield City Council

I’m proud to be a candidate this year to represent our community on the Southfield City Council. While in college, I was active in MSU Hillel’s national and international community service projects that brought me to the post-Katrina Gulf Coast and to the poorest parts of South America. Now as a young adult, I continue a career of service to my hometown of Southfield. I currently se as the District Director for serve Southfield in the Michigan House of Representatives and work every day to assist struggling homeowners, protect seniors and navigate residents through government bureaucracy.
