Lead the Way sowing the seeds of tomorrow’s leaders today
a fundraising event to help fund tuition assistance and JARC’s School Inclusion Program* at Akiva Hebrew Day School
Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the home of Mrs. Alice Berlin
To make a pledge or for additional information please call Sidney Katz at 248.386.1625 ext. 231 or go to www.akiva.org * JARC’s School Inclusion Program in Jewish day schools provides classroom and auxiliary support for children with special needs to attend school with their same-age peers. Students learn in typical classroom settings with their peers, instead of being segregated in a “special” classroom. Jewish day schools are not mandated by law to provide integrated services; and, therefore, the JARC School Inclusion Program must be funded privately. JARC continues to have families on a waiting list for scholarships for its School Inclusion Program.

Jewish Humor
The Other Side! For 30 years every day Moishe ate at “Abe’s Kosher Deli”. He was an honored guest & had his own reserved stool at the counter. He was loved by everyone & was generous to all the servers & staff including the owner, Moishe. One day Moishe didn’t show at his regular time. Abe was worried a bit as he realized Old Moishe was a widower & lived alone but then got busy & forgot about Moishe’s absence. The next day, no Moishe. Abe was worried... he phoned Moishe’s number & got no answer. He called a few local hospitals & even called Moishe’s daughter in Israel to no avail. Abe couldn’t sleep that night wondering what had happened. Now Abe was really concerned & just as he was about to call 911
he glanced out the window & saw Moishe going into “Goldberg’s Deli” across the street. Abe took off out the door & raced across the street narrowly missing getting hit by a bus & confronted Moishe just as he was sitting down. Abe screamed, “where have you been? I lost sleep & spent good money phoning around about you. What are you doing here at Goldberg’s.....you know he’s my worst enemy! Explain to me Moishe!!!!!” Moishe looked at Abe & said calmly, “Settle down Abraham, settle down. I’ll tell you what happened.... I went to the dentist 3 days ago & had one of those root canals. Oy the pain! The dentist gave me some pills & said: ‘Moishe, for a few days eat on the other side.’

In a Month We Call -“Av” By Rabbi Label Lam
T
hey sat to eat food; they raised their eyes and they saw, behold a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, their camels bearing spices, balsam and lotus- on their way to bring them down to Egypt. (Breishis 37: 25) Why does the verse reveal their burden? To let you know the reward for the righteous, because it is the way of the Arabs to only carry harsh smelling fuels and for this one spices were prepared so that he would not be damaged by the bad smell. (Rashi) A question popped up in Chumash class just last week! Joseph is about to be cast away into a twenty-two year exile where he will endure false accusations and imprisonment. Where is the super duper reward for the righteous? Sure, he gets bumped to first class, but where’s the flight headed? Rabbi Moshe Weinberger has often spoken about how his father had managed to bring a pair of Tefillin into the infamous concentration camp of Mathausen. During the time he was interred there, he and many others managed to put on this particular pair of Tefillin. He told his son on the occasion of his Bar Mitvah that two times, for the purpose of delousing, all the inmates were made to remove all their clothing. He was forced to part with the beloved Tefillin. However after the bulldozer passed by pushing all the refuse to the side -behold, his Tefillin were there to be reclaimed. He puts on those same Tefillin till this very day. Although all seemed so bleak at times, he survived with a sense he was not alone. I took a trip recently to Israel so that my son might put on his Tefillin for the first time, thirty days before his Bar Mitzvah, at the Western Wall. On the very last day of our ten day stay we went to visit Yad Vashem –The Holocaust Museum. It was packed with visitors of all types and stripes that day. As we moved from exhibit to exhibit we found ourselves becoming more and more emotionally impacted by what we were witnessing. At one point I was standing next to a smallish man with a Yarmulka. He was with his family. I glanced down and noticed numbers tattooed on his arm. I shouldered up to him. Without a word of exchange he looked in my direction nodding his head and confirmed, “Auschwitz!”
20
I told the man that we came to Israel so my son, who just began his career of wearing Tefillin might gather as many blessings as possible from great Rabbis and Tzadikim and that the Klausenberger Rebbe ztl. had said that if one wants to know from whom it is worthy to receive a blessing, find someone with numbers on his arm and he still puts on Tefillin. I asked him if he wouldn’t mind blessing my boy. He lit up with joy and a tearful sincerity and he blessed him. We treasure that encounter and value the blessing. We can only imagine the enormity of the personal angst and torment Joseph experienced on his way down to the depths of his personal exile in Egypt. To be torn away from his father by his brothers, all at once like that, must have hurt him very deeply. Then a small drop of goodness enters his otherwise dreary universe- The pleasant aroma of spices surrounds him and the awareness- These are Ishmaelites. Their usual load consists of harsh smelling spices. He is not just briefly comforted but rather forever fortified. He is not alone. The suffering is not meaningless. His Father- in Heaven is orchestrating even this unpleasant event for some greater good. How true!? Maybe it’s only a Tzadik who can catch an ever so subtle sign in a world in which subtlety seems lost. Or perhaps, like finding a blessing in the gloomiest of places like a Holocaust Museum or in the Holocaust itself, this is what we can all hope to connect with in a month we call -“Av”! The Enlarged Beige, Calligraphy-Addressed Envelope in the Mail By Robert J. Rome, Ph.D.
T
his is the time that we receive in the mail the beautifully calligraphied beige envelopes with two return addresses on the back. Inside the envelopes are wedding announcements, often with both Hebrew and English texts, both in fancy scripts. The invitations are especially exciting when you remember back to the day of birth of either the bride or groom. (They grow up so fast.) So far, this summer, my own house has been privileged to receive four such invitations to weddings. We also have received e-vites, special electronic notices sent by email, informing us of L’Chaim’s, engagement parties to introduce the newly engaged couples. Weddings. Engagements. Mazel Tov! In a time when people seem pessimistic about the economy and the future, riots throughout the world seem to be destroying entire countries, we see young couples getting married. These couples are proclaiming their optimism and hope for the future. When people generally seem to feel isolated and all on their own, these young couples are making a commitment to each other. They are embarking on a partnership. They are taking a stand. They are standing for something. They are accepting tradition. When others are rejecting the values of their parents and grandparents, these young couples will be married in the same ceremony that united their parents and their parents before that. The world around seems crazy. The “old ways” often just don’t seem to matter. Moms do not need dads to raise children. Dads don’t need moms. People don’t even talk to one another. Next door neighbors often remain strangers to one another, even after living for years right next door. People are making cutbacks in their lives, eliminating activities and expenses to cutback with the diminishing economy. People don’t want to take chances. Polls indicate that most Americans see their lives getting worse. 22
When others are rejecting the values of their parents and grandparents, these young couples will be married in the same ceremony that united their parents and their parents before that.
Yet, against this backdrop, couples are standing up and proclaiming to the world their love for each other, their hope for their future, and their willingness to make a commitment. They are committing to one another. They are committing to life, to positivity, to hope. They are accepting the future even in the face of uncertainties of the world about. This commitment seems all the more important against the backdrop of the current state of our society. I enjoy talking to the parents of the bride or groom. There is great happiness. The wedding seems an affirmation of all they worked for. Years of tuition payments. Orthodontic appointments. Little League baseball on Sundays. Car pools. Bar Mitzvah lessons. A year in Yeshiva in Israel. Three additional years of college. All the investments of time, effort, and money have paid off. The show of love over the past 22 years was all worth it. P’TACH IS STILL ALIVE AND KICKING
P’TACH is presently working towards opening a Teacher’s Resource Library of Judaic and General studies materials. This library will be located in Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and will be available to teachers of all schools in the community.
The opening date is projected for some time during the next school year.
Since P’TACH still has a deficit, which we would like to eliminate {or at least significantly reduce}, we are requesting that anyone who has a Pushke or anyone wishing to make a donation toward this deficit to please call Mrs. Bette Josephs at 248-399-6281.
We would like to thank everyone for your past support for the 31 years of our resource program activities. Many, many children (now teens & adults) were able to benefit from our services. Thank you again for all your help!

continued from page 22 son (or daughter) is now sharing his love, the love that he learned from you and his family, with his new partner. There are some interesting trends that I have seen among couples getting married. They want to do it right. There is a whole slew of artists who have created dozens of beautiful forms for Ketubot. The couples want to grace their new homes with the traditional text of the wedding contract beautifully and artistically painted and filled out. One bride-to-be whose ancestors come from the Island of Rhodes, just like mine, asked me how she might get an artist to replicate an ancient Ketuba from the Jewish Museum in Rhodes. It was not enough just to get a beautiful Ketuba, she wanted to have a Ketuba that her great-grandparents might have had. Other couples spend extra time to choose the exact right Hebrew melodies for the ceremony. It is not enough just to have the traditional verses read, couples want memorable melodies sung by memorable voices. There is a principle in Judaism of Hidur Mitzvot, not just celebrating the traditions, but observing the
traditions in the most beautiful way. Hidur Mitzvot describes how many of these young couples are approaching their weddings. Tradition is alive. The receipt of invitations tells me that there is indeed hope. The actions of these young couples inspire the rest of us. It is not a time to give up. It is a time to make commitments. It is a time for optimism. It is a time for hope. It is a time to think about and plan for the future. These young couples are showing courage. They are bucking the trends of society. They are rejecting the rejectionism that surrounds them. They are celebrating life. And to that, let’s say Mazel Tov! Robert J. Rome, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in clinical practice in Encino, California. He can be reached at RJRome@aol.com.

Tisha B’Av Unquestioned Answers by Rabbi M. Kamenetzky
R
ecently, the expression that Jews traditionally wished each other before the start of the Tisha B'Av fast was replaced by what one might call a more evocative one. What was once "have an easy fast" has been transformed into "have a meaningful fast." While "easy" or "meaningful" are not necessarily contradictory, nevertheless, in order to make any fast meaningful, we first must understand why we are fasting. And in order to understand why we are fasting, we must think. A good place to begin is a verse in Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, composed by the prophet Yirmiyahu as he watched the Temple, and the society of his times, erode and crumble, and the Jewish people go into exile. Despite suffering a terrible fate, seeing his leaders, his beloved people, and his cherished Temple all destroyed, he tells the nation: "Of what shall a living man complain? A strong man for his sins! Let us search and examine our ways, and return to Hashem" (Lamenetations 3:39-40). The prophet's question, "Of what shall a living man complain?" is difficult to understand. People always complain. Didn't Yirmiyahu experience enough to complain about? Also why does Yirmiyahu ask about a living man? Dead men don't tell tales, and they don't complain either. So why the extra word? Perhaps the second question answers the first, and the second verse emphasizes the answer. The Chasam Sofer once met a very old man and asked him the secret of his longevity. "I know that long life is a gift," the great sage said. "Tell me, what exemplary act did you do that merited you these long years?" The old man looked up and smiled. "Actually, I did nothing special. You see I have a different theory about long life. I stuck to my theory, and it worked for me." "And what is that theory?" the great sage inquired. The old man wrinkled his deeply lined face. "Like myself, all my friends went through their share of tzorus and misfortunes. We all do. They are, however, not here any longer. I am." "But why?" prodded the Chasam Sofer. "That was exactly my question. What is the secret of your 36
longevity? Yes! We all have our tzorus. But they didn't break you! You are still alive and in very good health. What is the difference between you and your friends?" "You see," answered the old man., "my friends asked 'Why?' I, however, did not." The Chasam Sofer seemed puzzled, but the man continued his monologue. "You see, every time tragedy struck, my friends would ask the Almighty, why did this happen? How did I come to deserve this? They would plead and prod the Creator for answers that no mortal mind could understand. And you know what happened?" The Chasam Sofer shook his head, careful not to interrupt the man's train of thought. "Hashem said, 'Do you really want to understand? Come, I will show you.' And so He took them to a place where all the mysteries of life are revealed, a place where the past and the future collide and today's actions are the answers to history's expostulations." The man continued. "I, on the other, hand, was not so curious. And if I was, I did not turn to Hashem and ask, 'Why?' Rather, I accepted what happened." Then the man's face began to glow. "And do you know what? He never invited me upstairs to explain anything!" Perhaps the essence of our annual mourning service can be summed up with Yirmiyahu's word's that analyze a mortal approach to immortal justice. "Of what shall a living man complain? A strong man for his sins! Let us search and examine our ways, and return to Hashem." We may have questions, but such questions do not require us to obsess about finding new answers. Instead, the only answer we can have is to search our own souls with introspection and return to Hashem. In truth, we are not put in this world to demand answers. We are here to improve ourselves and ultimately, the world. And we are here to understand when to turn to our own lives for answers, instead of to the Almighty with questions, so that we may survive the tragedies with both faith and life intact. Have a meaningful (and easy) fast. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS

fish and meat
The prohibition against eating fish and meat applies only when the two foods themselves are actually mixed together. But the ta’am (meat or fish taste) exuding from inside the pots or dishes used in their preparation or consumption is of no consequence. There is no requirement to set aside separate dishes and pots for the use of fish and meat. It is, therefore, permitted: • to cook meat in a pot, remove the meat, scrub the pot thoroughly and then cook fish in that pot even on the same day. • to bake an uncovered pot of fish in an oven and then bake an uncovered pot of meat in the same oven, as long as the oven walls are wiped clean of any spills. • to use the same grinder to grind both meat and fish separately, even if onions or other sharp foods were added, provided that the blade and receptacle are wiped clean between uses. • to use a clean meaty knife to slice onions that will be cooked with fish. Similarly, if some chicken soup, for example, inadvertently splashed against the outside of a pot containing fish while it was cooking on the stove, the fish may be eaten. This is because only the ta’am of the chicken will affect the fish, and that is of no consequence. Even if, inadvertently, fish and meat were actually cooked together in the same pot (and thus may not be eaten), the pot that was used does not need to undergo a koshering process in order for it to be used in the future. It is sufficient to merely scrub it clean and wait twenty-four hours before using it again.
LocaL Updates A small number of jars of BETTER MADE brand SALSA bearing no Kashrus certification were mistakenly sold at One Stop. These jars should not be used, and may be returned for a refund. LAWASH brand FLATBREAD from American Bakery Products, Inc., bearing the K-COR symbol, is normally Pas Yisroel (glow-plug method). However, some packages produced on July 18, bearing the production code 199071811, are in fact not Pas Yisroel. SUNSHINE KRISPY SALTINE CRACKERS in individual packages that are served with soup at various restaurants, including Jerusalem Pizza and Jerusalem Sub, are not Pas Yisroel.

QUAKER S’MORES CHEWY GRANOLA BARS are not Kosher. Some individually wrapped S’mores Granola Bars mistakenly bear an unauthorized OU-D. This mislabeled item can be found in both cartons of S’mores and in Variety Pack cartons. - The other varieties of Granola Bars are correctly labeled OU-D. Some stores are selling three jars of NEWMAN’S OWN PASTA SAUCES wrapped together in a clear plastic. Please note that these wrapped jars may contain both Kosher and non-Kosher varieties of Newman’s Own pasta sauces. The OU symbol only appears on the Kosher varieties. Please check all the jars before buying. TRADER JOES PITA CHIPS WITH SEA SALT bearing the Wisconsin K symbol is Kosher, but was mislabeled Pas Yisroel. It is not Pas Yisroel. PLANTERS BRITTLE NUT MEDLEY contains yogurt covered raisins and is certified OU Dairy. A small quantity of this product was mistakenly labeled without the D. SUNTREE CHOCOLATE NUT MIX and SUNTREE TRAIL MIX contain dairy ingredients, as listed on their ingredient panels, but mistakenly bear a plain OU instead of OU-D. HERSHEY’S STRAWBERRY SYRUP manufactured in the U.S. is certified OU-D. Mor Yam, an Israeli importer of this product, placed a sticker on top of the label with a plain OU, omitting the D. The product’s correct status is OU-D, when the label indicates “Made in USA”.
