There are over 169 different kinds of progressive lenses. How do you know which are best for you?
0RVW SHRSOH ZKHQ WKH\ ÂżUVW JHW SURJUHVVLYH OHQVHV NQRZ YHU\ OLWWOH DERXW WKH RSWLRQV DYDLODEOH There are many things you need to know before you buy progressive lenses. Done right they provide better sight, more comfort and no strain. Done poorly they can be a source of more stress, headaches and poor vision.
0DNH VXUH \RX JHW WKH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ WKH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV DQG WKH ULJKW IUDPHV 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ How lenses are made have changed very quickly as technology has improved our abilities to create better progressive lenses. Digital lenses provide for a wider field of vision, greater accuracy of progression and clear peripheral vision. 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV With progressive lenses especially, millimeters make a difference. Is the reading part of the lens sitting at the exact spot that it should? Does the distance area begin too high or too low? Besides the measurements in the lenses, your posture needs to be taken into account. If your optical professional is not measuring all of the
areas you will be getting a less that optimum visual experience. 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV Most people think frames are all about fashion - how they look. While finding frames that suit you is important, finding frames that will enhance your vision by how it accommodates your lenses is even more important.

Our state of the art facility has the latest technology for the best quality lenses available. We have digital lenses that can be tailored for a person’s work tasks and individual needs, and our measuring process is the most thorough anywhere. Q
On Friday night, my toddler was burning up with fever. Was I allowed to take her temperature so I could know if it was dangerously high?
A
Taking the temperature of anyone who may be ill, toddler or adult, is permitted on Shabbos, even for non-life threatening situations. The issue is only which type of thermometer may be used: The old-fashioned mercury-type thermometer (no longer being manufactured) or the newer “mercury style” thermometers which are filled with a mercury-free liquid, may be used on Shabbos, and when necessary, it is permitted to shake them down before usage. [A rectal thermometer may be lubricated with baby oil or Vaseline.] A liquid crystal (plastic strip) thermometer, a type of thermometer that contains heat-sensitive liquid crystals in a plastic strip that changes colors to indicate different temperatures, is permitted by most poskim to be used on Shabbos, and one may do so when a mercury-style thermometer is not available. Using a digital thermometer is generally forbidden on Shabbos, since they work by turning on and off electrical circuits. Still, if the other type of thermometers are not available, and you are concerned that your toddler may be running a dangerously high fever, even if there is only a small possibility of that, you are permitted to use a digital thermometer, since it may be a life-threatening situation and we are obligated to desecrate the Shabbos under those circumstances. If you can figure out a way to use the digital thermometer while employing a shinui, that would be preferable.
Q
My husband tends to get headaches which, if left untreated, become so bad he needs to stay in bed. Is he permitted to take a painkiller as soon as the headache strikes, to prevent him from becoming bedridden?
A
Yes, he may. One is not required to actually become bedridden before taking the medication. If, for example, your husband suffers from migraine headaches and can tell in advance 36
that a migraine is coming, he may take medication before the migraine sets in.
Q
I gave birth on Thursday and will be home, b’ezras Hashem, for Shabbos. Are there any halachic leniencies I need to know about in my case?
A
For 72 hours after giving birth (or after a miscarriage if the pregnancy was over 40 days) a woman is considered to be in a life-threatening situation, and she is permitted to do – or have others do for her – anything she might need for her recovery. This is permitted even if the yoledes herself does not request it or even if she says she doesn’t need it. Certainly, whatever can be done via a shinuy or a non-Jew should be done that way.
Q
My baby is suffering from a very bad diaper rash which the doctor said must be treated with cream. How do I go about treating it on Shabbos?
A
Most (but not all) poskim are of the opinion that spreading ointment on the skin is a violation of Smoothing and is forbidden on Shabbos. The recommended method when one must use cream or ointment on Shabbos is to squeeze the ointment or cream from the tube directly onto the affected area. [When the ointment is in a jar, the ointment may be removed with one’s finger and dabbed on the affected area.] The diaper may then be placed over the cream, even though this may result in spreading the cream. If, for some reason, the above option cannot be used effectively, several poskim permit spreading cream on the skin provided that all of the cream is absorbed into the skin and nothing remains on the surface. According to this opinion, Smoothing applies only when some substance remains on the surface and is then smoothed down and leveled; it does not apply when all of the ointment is absorbed and nothing remains externally. The family of Rabbi Eliezer Cohen z”l would like to thank all those who helped us during Shiva, through Rosh Hashana, and in the difficult days and weeks following. We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of love and respect shown to Rabbi Cohen by your presence, your words, your donations to many varied tzedakos, your letters and emails and blogs. The attentiveness and honor shown by the administration and staff of Yeshivat Akiva, Rabbi Cohen’s colleagues, have brought us much comfort. Above all, we have been inspired and uplifted by Rabbi Cohen’s students, past and present. We are indebted to the many caring people in our community who looked after us and provided meals and served our entire family throughout Shiva and the three-day Yomtov period immediately afterwards. We can only hope to repay your great kindnesses by responding with similar caring, though we pray that the occasions will be ones of joy and happiness.

Esther’s Lesson in Nature RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO
N
ature. Natural. We hear and use these words often. We know that the sun rises every morning, and sets in the evening. How do we know when we go to sleep that the sun will rise the next morning? Because it always does, it’s supposed to, that’s part of nature. “Nature” as we refer to it is really just one mode of how G-d manifests His presence. G-d is always present. However, we often fail to recognize His presence. Why? Because G-d made an order by which the world runs daily. The sun rises and sets. Oil burns. Children are born. Careers end. We don’t see headlines in the newspaper that read “Child born” unless that child has six siblings who entered the world shortly after, or the mother was in her late 50s, or the child picked airspace above the Pacific Ocean to enter the world. These later occurrences are out of the ordinary, not natural, and therefore make us perk up and take notice. Nature presents us with a challenge, and it was this challenge that Esther helped her sisters and brothers overcome. The Talmud (Ta’anis 25a) relates a story about Rav Chanina. Rav Chanina was known for both his dire financial situation and for the blatant miracles of which he was the subject. Once, on a Friday eve, he noticed that his daughter was sad. He said to her, “My daughter, why are you sad?” She replied “My oil can got mixed up with my vinegar can and I lit the Shabbos lights with the vinegar.” He said to her: “My daughter, Why should this trouble you? He who had commanded the oil to burn will also command the vinegar to burn.” The Talmud notes that indeed that is what happened: The light burned for the entire Shabbos. Rav Chanina appreciated the nature of nature. Who said oil should burn? G-d did.
Therefore, if G-d wants, vinegar can burn as well. All of what we consider natural is really miraculous. We, however, often fail to appreciate the miraculous aspects of nature until it somehow slaps us in the face. We have to appreciate the role of G-d in every aspect of our lives. We have to appreciate the hand of G-d on a daily basis, for those things that don’t catch the eye of the media. If we live our lives and never recognize G-d’s role, we fail to show our thanks to G-d and our faith in G-d. The situation was desperate. The king had signed an edict: the Jews were to be killed. Mordechai told Esther that the Jews needed her intervention. Esther had to go ask the King to spare the Jewish people. Esther was initially hesitant. She told Mordechai (Esther 4:11) that whoever comes to the inner court of the king who the king has not called will be put to death. The only exception: Those to whom the king holds out the golden scepter. Mordechai responded to this concern by telling Esther that she should not think that because she is in the palace she will escape the fate of the rest of her nation. Esther’s reaction was in instructions: Mordechai should gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan. They should all fast for Esther. She and her attendants will fast likewise, and then she will go to the king, despite the risk. Rav Avraham ibn Ezra notes that Esther’s own behavior was a bit unusual. We know that a person who fasts for three days will become weak. They will not look as attractive because of their weakened state. As King Achashverosh chose Esther for queen because of her beauty, why would she want to diminish the most valuable asset she possessed that could win over Achashverosh? Furthermore, why did Esther tell
Esther got an entire nation to recognize who controls the world, who makes nature natural: G-d.

Mordechai that she was going to fast? The answer is that Esther understood how she managed to become queen. Esther, the Talmud tells us, had a green pallor that was not particularly attractive. However, G-d graced Esther with such charm and appeal that Achashverosh selected her above anyone else. Esther realized that she achieved this position through the hand of G-d, although others might think it was a natural choice - Achashverosh was taken by her looks. Esther, therefore, knew that her looks were no asset. Yes, people might find her attractive, but that is not what will bring success: G-d will. She wanted to build within her a deep trust in G-d. She decided to fast so that by diminishing her beauty, she would have full faith in G-d. She could not hang her hopes on any other factor that she possessed and could have attributed to herself. Therefore, she revealed her plan to fast to Mordechai. If the Jews would hear the news, they would be distraught: How could Esther diminish her beauty - the cause of Achashverosh’s attraction to her? The Jewish nation would be forced to put full faith in G-d. They could not rely anymore on the natural attraction that existed previously. They had to believe that G-d alone
is their source of salvation, not Esther’s looks, wit, or character. The people believed and the people were saved. They were able to remove the blinders that nature presents and see things as they truly were: G-d controls all. Esther achieved her goal. She got an entire nation to recognize who controls the world, who makes nature natural: G-d. The Sages have memorialized this accomplishment of Esther in the Megillah, and it is read by the Jewish people every year. The name of G-d is never mentioned in the Megillah, to illustrate that the salvation of the Jews that appeared to result from political maneuvering and convenient coincidences was really the hand of G-d, albeit in a clandestine, natural way. The Megillah serves as a prime example of how we must appreciate the role G-d plays in our lives. Nature is natural because G-d makes it so, and it is as miraculous as the supernatural. Our job is to take in the commonplace, natural occurrences and appreciate them for what they truly are: a gift from G-d. A Freilichin Purim! Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org.

YACHAD FAMILY SHABBATONS FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILIES TO TRAVEL FAR AND WIDE TO NEW YORK, CHICAGO AND LOS ANGELES AREAS FOR EVENTS
T
he program started in the Northeast 28 years ago and spread across the country, providing a weekend of fun, stimulation, education, networking, play and a beautiful Shabbat for families of special needs children. Now, for the first time, Yachad, the Orthodox Union’s agency for those with disabilities, will present three Family Shabbatons (weekend retreats) – in Connecticut for the Northeast; in Chicago, for the Midwest; and in Los Angeles, for the Pacific Coast. The program in the New York, expanded to Chicago three years ago, and now, like a migration of pioneers across the continent, has arrived in Los Angeles. The details are as follows: · Northeast, May 9-11, Stamford (CT) Plaza Hotel · Midwest, March 21-23, Chicago, Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort, Bloomingdale, IL · West Coast, June 13-15, Agoura Hills, CA (Los Angeles), Sheraton Agoura Hills Hotel Registration is now in progress for all three. Scholarships are available for each of the Shabbatons. “This is one of those ‘can’t-miss’ weekends for a family of someone with special needs. It‘s time to sign up,” declared Eli Hagler, Yachad associate director. Yachad, the flagship program of the Orthodox Union’s National Jewish Council for Disabilities (NJCD), provides unique social, educational and recreational programs for individuals with learning, developmental and physical disabilities with the goal of their inclusion in the total life of the Jewish community. “These retreats will allow parents, siblings, and individuals with developmental disabilities alike to join for a weekend of learning, sharing, fun, games and togetherness,” explained Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman, International Director of NJCD. “Parents attend sessions which provide upto-date information on the disability world; problem solving strategies; advice on ‘what should my child be doing?’; and the opportunity to share experiences. Siblings enjoy workshops unique to their needs, while participants with developmental disabilities have sessions, games, and activities of their own, similar to the famous ‘Yachad Shabbaton.’ Mealtimes are special, with singing, ‘talks’ by the Yachad members, and families basking in the glow of their children’s pleasure and success.” Families come from far and wide to attend the Shabbatons; the Midwest program, for example, attracts families from as many as ten states, throughout the Midwest. Registration information: · Northeast: Call 212-613-8229 or visit www.yachad.org/family; · Midwest: Contact Nate Rischall at 224-420-1136, rischalln@ou.org, or visit Yachad.org/family; · West Coast: Contact Orit Faguet at 310-229-9000 x206, LosAngelesYachad@ou.org, or Yachad.org/family.

WINNER EXERCISE: PUSH-UPS
by Sharon Green
Why it’s a winner: Push-ups strengthen almost every muscle you’ve got, including your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core muscles. Strengthening these muscles will boost your metabolism and burn fat simultaneously. Additionally, many people who regularly perform push ups (with correct form) find their previous back issues to be cured. This is because push ups train the muscles to control the spine, pulling the bones where they belong. How to: Facing down, place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Place your toes on the floor. If that’s too hard, start with your knees on the floor. Your body should make a straight line from shoulders to knees or feet. Bend your elbows to lower down until you almost touch the floor. Lift back up by pushing through your elbows, Keep your torso in a straight line throughout the move by keeping your core muscles engaged. It’s easy to get hurt if your form or technique is wrong. Once a trainer or fitness professional shows you the correct way, you will be able to maintain it on your own. Too Hard? Too Easy? If you’re new to push-ups a great way to start is by doing them against a kitchen counter. As you get stronger, go lower, using a desk or chair. Then you can progress to the floor, starting with your knees bent. Want to up the challenge? A progression would be to put your feet on a stair, bench, or couch while keeping good form, or add a stability ball under your hips, knees or feet. Perform 10 repetitions. Physical activity should be performed with the consent of your doctor. Sharon Green is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine who offers classes/training to all ages and ability levels. breakfast
Linking our table to yours..... BAKED FRENCH TOAST MUFFINS 1 loaf French bread, cut or torn into 1/2 inch cubes (about 12 cups of bread) 2 1/2 cups milk 6 large eggs 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Cinnamon Streusel Topping: 1/4 cup cold butter 1/4 cup light brown sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon Pinch of salt
1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. 2. Grease a 12 cup muffin tin. Add about 1 cup of bread cubes to each muffin cup. Carefully pour egg and milk mixture evenly over each muffin tin. You may need to press down on the bread cubes after you pour a little mixture and then pour more. Pour slowly or you will have a mess. Cover the muffins with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours or up to overnight. 3. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350째. To make the cinnamon streusel, in a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Mix together with a fork until you have a crumbly mixture. Remove the muffins from the refrigerator and sprinkle the muffins evenly with the streusel topping. 4. Bake for 25 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Let muffins cool for 5 minutes. Remove from pan and serve with butter and maple syrup, if desired.

Jewish Humor Little 5-year old Sarah was playing a word game with her Bubbie. She had just drawn her second “O”. Switching the letter cards around, Sarah put them together in front of her and with a triumphal cry, she said “Look Bubbie, I made a word!” Looking at her cards, she had lined them up to spell K-O-O-B. Bubbie Beckie asked, “What kind of word is ‘koob’?” “No Bubbie, you’re not saying it right -- it says ‘book’.” “But, darling, you’ve spelled it backwards!” her Bubbie explained lovingly. With a sigh reserved for dumb adults, she explained, “Of course I have. I’m Jewish!”
