Haman’s Offer of Silver Shekels By Rabbi Yissocher Frand
The Megillah [Esther 3:9] states that Haman offered to increase the King’s coffers by 10,000 kikar silver in exchange for the right to get rid of the Jews. (Tosfos in Tractate Megillah [16a] indicates that this was a half Shekel for every Jewish person.) The simple analysis of Haman’s offer is that Haman was afraid that Achashverosh would object to the loss of Jewish tax revenue if he killed them all. To pre-empt that financial objection, Haman was ready to sweeten the deal for the King by making an offer of ten thousand kikar silver. On the metaphysical level, however, the Rabbis tell us that Haman was trying to negate the merit of the Jews annual half Shekel contribution to the Temple’s upkeep. The Gemara [Megilla 13b] says that since HaShem [G-d] knew that Haman would offer Shekels to Achashverosh to ‘purchase’ the right to destroy the Jews, HaShem pre-empted Haman’s contribution through the half- shekel. The merit of the Jews contributing the annual half-shekel protected them (in the future) against Haman’s evil designs. I once heard an interpretation of this Gemarah in the name of the Yismach Yisrael. Haman’s potential for destroying the Jewish people was hinted at in his own description of the nation: “There is a people that is dispersed and divided…” [Esther 3:8]. It is only because there is division and unjustified hatred within the Jewish nation that their enemies have the ability to harm them. When the Jews are divided, they represent only individuals — not a Klal [a communal entity]. When that happens we have lost our strength. Haman’s whole plot was based on the division of the nation. That is why G-d insisted that each Jew should give exactly one-half shekel. The symbolism of the half-shekel is that each Jew is only a fraction of the entity. He needs to combine with his fellow Jew to make a significant contribution. If we think we can be ‘an entire shekel unto ourselves’, that is not going to work. Our strength is through the recognition that we need each other and the realization that we need to set aside our petty differences to come together to provide a complete shekel. This is the strength that ultimately saved the Jewish people. Because of the terrible calamity that was hanging over them as a result of Haman’s decree, they decided to put away those ‘dispersions and divisions in the nation’ and came together as a unit and as a whole. {Yismach Yisrael (1863-1910) Rav Yerachmiel Yisroel Yitzchok Danziger, the second Alexander Rebbe. He was Niftar/Passed away in 1909.} Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org This Torah page should be ripped out and wrap or bagged and discarded honorably

20 Adar I, 5779 - February 25, 2019
Dear Members of the Detroit Community, UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE VAAD HARABBONIM
BOARD OF DIRECTORS Ari Gelberman Yosef Klein Rabbi Yitzchok Pierce Stuart Newman Treasurer OPERATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE Barry Speizer Kerry Silver Chuny Mandel
What a month we had!
In the month of January 2019, Detroit Chaverim responded to 119 calls, including 71 dead batteries, 24 low or flat tires, 8 car lockouts, and many other acts of friendly chessed. During the polar vortex, Chaverim members braved the sub-zero temperatures to respond to 30 calls in a single day. When it gets cold outside, Chaverim heats up!
In the last few months we have been zoche to bolster our ranks to meet the community’s needs. Each additional member is issued professional equipment to ensure that calls can be answered safely and proficiently. Members’ equipment is also replaced as needed. Chaverim operates on communal donations. Various members of our community have stepped forward to support Chaverim’s mission, and we are tremendously appreciative. We would especially like to thank those who recently donated to launch Chaverim’s generator program.
This Purim we again, b’ezras HaShem, will provide a free shuttle bus for the community. The route is shown adjacent to this letter. The Purim shuttle bus provides a safe transportation option to all members of our community. In prior years this service has been well used and well received. The shuttle bus is also Chaverim’s only annual fundraiser. Please consider joining with Chaverim to sponsor the shuttle bus this year by calling our dispatch or any board member to discuss sponsorship availability. Donations can also be made through the donate button on our website: http://www.detroitchaverim.org/ Wishing you all the very best, and a safe and lebedik Purim, Ari Gelberman

Pessach Cleaning By: Rabbi Berel Wein
Pessach and its memories are why we are here and why we have the right to be here. Once Purim, with all of its joys, hangovers and calories, is out of the way, the Jewish world bravely confronts the great holiday of Pessach and its myriad preparatory requirements. One of the time-honored rituals in Jewish households is the pre-Pessach house-cleaning frenzy that overwhelms the family, especially the female part thereof. The eradication of hametz from the house is only the pious front that is put forward to rationalize the otherwise irrational drive to put everything in the house in its proper place, shiny, spotless and dusted. Every useful item that is needed for daily efficiency in the home, and especially in my study, can no longer be found because it has been placed “where it belongs.” Of course, over the course of time as the year progresses, usually by Shavuot, these items so necessary for comfortable living are no longer “where they belong” but rather “where I can find them.” But that it is grist for the mill for another column that I may yet write some day. My task in *the ritual of* Pessach cleaning is mainly relegated to explaining why the ruthless cleaning going on before my eyes and the movement of my tapes, papers, and books to “where they belong,” is not really necessary, in strict halachic terms. I know that this a doomed lost cause as far as I am concerned, since Jewish women from time immemorial have not trusted the “leniency” of Halacha when it comes to pre-Pessach house cleaning. But at least I go through the motions of attempting to mitigate the household whirlwind that always accompanies the advent of the great holiday of freedom and redemption. However, my real task before Pessach is to dust, spray with a protective spray and place in order - “where they belong” - my books. Since I have acquired a sizable library of books over the years, this is no small task. I am a procrastinator by nature when it comes to executing household chores. Nevertheless, I have a great sense of anticipation when it comes to the pre-Pessach cleaning of my books and placing them in correct order on my library’s shelves. Books are memories. I remember the circumstances and places where I purchased most of my books. I can identify which are the books of my youth and spring and which are the ones I bought in my later years. I see the books that I purchased out of my saved coins when I was in the yeshiva and I am flooded by the serene and joyous memories of those golden years of intensive Torah study and the camaraderie of friends that yeshiva life engendered. I remember that this is the book that I used when studying with this particular holy teacher of mine and, even though he is now long since gone from the woes of this world, he is still alive to me as I again open and look into that book. I carefully dust the two books that I have from my grandfather’s library and remember the piece of sugar that he put in my mouth when, as a child, I correctly interpreted the words of Rashi for him. That sweetness has never departed from me. It has nurtured me on many a dark and disappointing day in my life. The world correctly identified the Jewish people as being the “People of the Book.” It is “the book” that has preserved us as a people and revitalized Jewish life in all places and times. For “the book” - the Bible, the Talmud, the love of learning, the intellectual stimulus and the respect for scholarship and scholars - is the collective memory of the Jewish people. In telling us what was, the book also informs us as to what is now and what will yet be. One cannot approach Pessach without the gift of memory. For Pessah is all memory. And therefore the household cleaning that precedes it is also part of the necessary process of memory. It may be chided, but never scoffed at. Pessach and its memories are why we are here and why we have the right to be here. It is paradoxical how that getting rid of the hametz allows the memories suppressed by our everyday preoccupations to flood back into our minds and hearts. So, let us get on cheerfully with our Pessach cleaning. One never knows what one will find while cleaning the house for Pessach. HEALTH & FITNESS TRIVIA • Approximately one in four American children is overweight. • The only joint in the body that can rotate 360° is the shoulder. • Exercise increases endorphin levels which can contribute to a feeling of well-being. • The single most preventable cause of death is cigarette smoking. • The average foot walks more than a thousand miles a year. • When people exercise by walking, they walk 30% longer if they walk to music. • The body‘s largest & most complex joint is the knee. • A pound of muscle burns three times more calories than a pound of fat. • If you exercise while tired, your increased blood & oxygen levels will most likely give you more energy. • The number of fat cells in your body is determined at birth. A gain in body fat does not increase the number of fat cells, but rather the size of the existing ones.

SIMPLE ROAST Ingredients: • • • • •
5 lb roast 3 bags of pre-sauteed onions* ¾ cups red wine 4 carrots 4 potatoes
• • • •
¾ tsp oregano 3 shakes of paprika ½ tsp onion powder ¼ cup orange juice
Instructions:
Cook on low overnight in slow cooker for about 10 hours. Freeze with liquid (there will be some gravy left over you can get creative with!) * I chop 1-2 bags of onions, slow cook them overnight with 1TB olive oil, then freeze in snack bags. More great tips like this in the book!! Recipe from Julie Hauser, author of Pesach While You Sleep: the easy way to cook ahead for Yom Tov…no Pesach kitchen necessary!; (This cookbook is full of recipes that can be used all year round too!) Julie Hauser is not a chef or a foodie. She just likes to remind herself and others that Pesach does not equal panic. And with her method, Pesach prep is not a race. It’s a relief. You could even cook for Yom Tov with your eyes closed… while you sleep!
