The Untouchables RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY
A
unique aspect of the holiday of Shavuous struck me as I was explaining the customs of the holidays to some beginners. They began to review the various holiday laws with me. โOK,โ began one young man. โSo on Pesach youโve got the matzoh, and the mitzvah of telling the story of the Exodus.โ โCorrect,โ I nodded. โAnd on Sukkos youโve got the lulav, esrog and eating the entire holiday in a sukkah right.โ Again I gave an approving nod and smiled. The student continued. โAnd what special observance does the Torah tell us to do on Shavuos?โ I hesitated. Sacri๏ฌces aside, what special mitzvah observance do we do to commemorate the receiving of the Torah? I was reluctant to respond with, โwe stay up all night and learnโ or โwe eat cheesecake at the holiday meal,โ beautiful customs that are in no way comparable to the level of a Torah-ordained command. In fact, the Torah tells us in Parshas Reโeh how we celebrate the holiday. โYou shall count seven weeks for yourselvesโฆThen you shall observe the holiday of Shavuos for Hashem. You shall rejoice before Hashem, your son your daughter, your servant your maidservant, the Levite in your cities, the proselyte, the orphan and the widow who are among youโ (Deuteronomy 116:13-15). Why is there no physical act in commemoration of the Yom Tov? There is no Torah-prescribed requirement to blow Shofar, read a special Torah portion (the reading of the 10 Commandments is Rabbinically ordained), or special ritual to commemorate the event. There is only all-inclusive rejoicing. Why is joy the only way to celebrate? And why is every type of citizen mentioned? Arenโt the poor and rich, widowed and orphaned included in every command? My grandfather, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, of blessed memory, passed away 13 years ago. At the end of the shloshim period of mourning, his student, Rabbi Yitzchok Chinn, Rabbi of 22
Gemilas Chesed Congregation of McKeesport, Pennsylania, eulogized him. He related the following story: Reb Yaakov spent his summers at in Camp Ohr Shraga in Ellenville, NY. One summer, a young boy asked Reb Yaakov a most dif๏ฌcult question, โRebbe,โ he inquired, โwhere is my neshama (soul)?โ Reb Yaakov turned to the boy and asked him, โWhere is your arm?โ The boy stuck out his arm. โGood!โ said Reb Yaakov. โI want you to shake it.โ The boy began to shake his arm up and down. Reb Yaakov smiled, โGood, now shake your other arm.โ The boy began ๏ฌapping his arms. โWonderful! Now show me your leg.โ The boy lifted his foot. โNow shake it!โ While ๏ฌapping his arms, the boy shook his leg. Then Reb Yaakov smiled. โNow your other leg!โ The boy began to jump and shake and rock and sway. And as he watched the youngster move with every part of his very essence, Reb Yaakov gave him a tremendous smile and exclaimed, โThat is your neshama!โ The only way to commemorate the receiving of the Torah is to celebrate the receipt of our nationโs soul. We cannot celebrate the soul with a physical commemoration. The soul of the nation celebrates by shaking every one of its parts: poor or rich, wealthy or poor, free or slave, son or daughter with unmitigated joy. The only way to capture the essence of our very being and our gratitude for the gift that infused us with boundless spirituality is through a rejoicing that permeates every part of the Jewish body; its arms, legs, and torso โ The Torah. The observance is not relegated to eating an item, telling a story, hearing a shofar or sitting in a booth. Like the Torah we received, the celebration encompasses every aspect of our lives. And that is done thorough joyous simcha. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org. COMMUNITY LINKS

Fast Facts about Yad Ezra ๏ท With continued high unemployment in our state, Yad Ezra continues to experience record number of families in need of food assistance. ๏ท Currently, 5% of the Jewish metro Detroit population relies on Yad Ezra for monthly assistance. ๏ท We have 3,000 clients on our active rolls (1,500 families). ๏ท Since December 2007, the number of individuals assisted by ๏ท Yad Ezra has increased by 33%. ๏ท Through a partnership with MiCafe (Michigan Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly), Yad Ezra volunteers have registered more than 100 Oakland County families for SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) who, prior to meeting with us, did not receive the government entitlement.
Let Yad Ezra purchase groceries with your donation. With Yad Ezraโs buying power, warehouse space and careful attention to pricing, Yad Ezra is able to save client families a significant amount of money while providing them with nutritious and good tasting food. Check out our website www.yadezra.org or call (248) 548-3663 to make a donation or for more info! COMMUNITY LINKS

Links to the Vaad SHAVUOS ISSUES Flowers are an integral part of the Yom Tov of Shavous. What are the Shabbos and Yom Tov restrictions in regard to flowers? Flowers in a vase may be moved on Shabbos and Yom Tov. They may not, however, be moved from a shady area to a sunny area to promote blossoming. If the buds have not fully bloomed, the vase may be moved but just slightly, since the movement of the water hastens the opening of the buds. One may remove flowers from a vase full of water, as long as they have not sprouted roots in the water. Once removed, they may not be put back in the water if that will cause further blossoming. Water may not be added to a flower vase on Shabbos. On Yom Tov, however, a small amount of water may be added but not changed. Flowers should be placed in water before Yom Tov. In case they were not, they may not be placed in water on Yom Tov if the buds have not blossomed fully. If the buds are completely opened, however, some poskim permit placing them in water on Yom Tov while others do not. One may not gather flowers or create an arrangement and place it in a vase on Shabbos, even if the vase contains no water. Does one recite a blessing over the pleasant fragrance exuded from flowers in a vase? Just as one may not derive pleasure from food or drink before reciting a proper blessing, so too, one may not enjoy a pleasant fragrance before reciting the appropriate blessing. There are two different types of blessings that can be recited over pleasant fragrances exuded from flowers: 1) Borei atzei vesamim: Recited over fragrant shrubs and trees or their flowers (e.g., myrtle, roses); 2) Borei isvei vesamim: Recited over fragrant herbs, grasses or flowers. The blessing is recited immediately before one intends to smell the pleasant fragrance. Bโdiavad, one may recite the blessing within a few seconds after he smelled a pleasant fragrance. But a blessing over a pleasant fragrance is recited only over an object whose purpose is to exude a pleasant fragrance. If the object is 38

primarily for another purposeโeven if the object is sweet-smellingโno blessing is recited. Although flowers in a vase exude a pleasant fragrance, since people usually buy flowers for their beauty, one who walks by and smells them does not recite a blessing. If, however, the flowers are picked up and smelled, a blessing must be recited. Within the same meal, may one eat cheese or other dairy food and then eat meat immediately thereafter? According to the basic halachah it is permitted to eat meat or chicken immediately after eating cheese or any other dairy food, even during the same meal; there is no requirement to recite Birkas ha-mazon or a berachah acharonah between the dairy and the meat. The only separation required is to clean and rinse the mouth and teeth, wash the hands and clean the table (or change the tablecloth) to make sure that no dairy residue or crumbs remain. While there are scrupulous individuals who wait at least an hour between eating dairy and meat in addition to reciting Birkas ha-mazon or a berachah acharonah between them โ and their custom is based on the Zohar and quoted by several poskimโ it is not required by the halachah. Does the same halachah apply to hard cheese as well? When โhardโ cheeseโgenerally defined as cheese aged six or months or longerโis eaten, the halachah is different. Shulchan Aruch quotes an opinion that requires one to wait a full six hours between eating hard cheese and meat. This view maintains that the taste and oily residue of hard cheese lingers in the mouth long after the cheese has been consumed, just as the taste and residue of meat lingers long after consumption. In addition, other poskim hold that hard cheese can get stuck between the teeth just as pieces of meat do. While other poskim do not consider either of these issues to be a problem with hard cheese and permit eating meat immediately after eating hard cheese, Rama and the later poskim recommend that one be stringent and wait six hours between consuming hard cheese, and meat or poultry. Dairy on Shavout RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO
M
any reasons are offered for the custom of eating dairy on Shavuot: The Ten Commandments encompass all 613 commandments. Thus, when the Jews returned to their tents after the giving of the Torah, they were bound for the ๏ฌrst time by the Torahโs dietary laws. Therefore, they could not eat meat, for they ๏ฌrst had to prepare a proper slaughtering knife, remove the forbidden fats from the slaughtered meat, salt it and procure kosher cooking utensils. All this made it necessary for them to eat dairy, rather than meat, at that time. As a commemoration of this, we eat dairy on Shavuot (Mishnah Berurah 494:12). Kol Bo writes that it is customary to eat both milk and honey to which the Torah is likened, as it is written, โHoney and milk are under your tongueโ (Song of Songs 4:11). Divrei Yedidyah understands honey and milk as an allusion to the hidden facets of Torah, which are tastier than honey and milk but which must remain โhidden under the tongue,โ i.e. imparted only to select individuals (see Chagigah 13a). Why is Torah likened to honey and milk? Honey comes from a bee, which is not kosher, and milk comes from a live animal whose meat is forbidden until the animal is slaughtered. Both honey and milk, therefore, allude to the power of Torah which can transform a sullied soul into one of holiness and purity (from Chag HaShavuot published by Yad LโAchim). In the writings of Kabbalah, wine and blood symbolize judgment, while water and milk symbolize compassion. Red is also associated with sin and white with atonement, as it is written, โThough your errors will be like scarlet, they will become white as snow; though they will be red as crimson, they will become like woolโ (Isaiah 1:18). It is through the purifying process of the Se๏ฌrah period that the Jewish people merit Divine compassion on Shavuot, symbolized by the eating of dairy (Magen Avraham 494:6 citing Zohar; see there for further explanation of this concept). The Talmud (Makkos 23b) states that the 365 negative commandments correspond to the 365 days of the solar calendar. According to Zohar, each, day 46
of the year corresponds to a speci๏ฌc commandment. As mentioned above, in Temple times, the bringing of Bikkurim the ๏ฌrst fruits of the seven species with which the Land of Israel:, is blessed, began on Shavuot, and this is one reason why the Torah calls this Festival โDay of the First Fruits.โ The Torah juxtaposes, โThe ๏ฌrst of your landโs early produce you shall bring to the Temple of the Lord, your G-d,โ with, โDo not cook a kid in its motherโs milkโ (Exodus 34:26), indicating that the day of Shavuot corresponds to the prohibition requiring the separation of meat and milk. To symbolize this, we eat dairy and then meat on Shavuot according to the laws prescribed by halachah (Chidushei HaRim). As mentioned above, Moses was rescued from the Nile River on the sixth of Sivan, the day on which Shavuot falls. The Talmud relates how Pharaohโs daughter ๏ฌrst brought Moses to Egyptian wet nurses, but he would not nurse, for G-d did not want the mouth that would one day communicate with Him to nurse from a non-Jew (Sotah 12b). Pharaohโs daughter then had Moses given over to Yocheved to be nursed, unaware that this woman was the infantโs own mother. The eating of milk foods on the sixth of Sivan commemorates this hidden miracle (Yalkut Yitzchak). Man cannot live on bread alone, nor can he survive on just water. Yet, one of the miracles of cildbirth is that a motherโs milk provides her nweborn with all the nourishment it needs. In this sense, Torah is like milk, for it encompasses within it all the sustenance that manโs soul needs for spiritual vitality and growth. Thus, the milk foods of SHabuot allude to the Torah itself (Imrei Noam). Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org. COMMUNITY LINKS

Flowers on Shavout On Shavuot we celebrate getting the Torah on Har Sinai, usually devoid of all ๏ฌora and fauna, which suddenly became beautifully covered in ๏ฌowers. To commemorate this act of Hashem, we decorate our shuls with ๏ฌowers.
Fun Facts about Flowers ๏ฝ There are over 15,000 species of roses cultivated across the world. ๏ฝ Amazingly, tulips can continue to grow as much as an inch per day after being cut. ๏ฝ Feng shui buffs believe that chrysanthemums will bring happiness and laughter to any room. ๏ฝ Broccoli is a ๏ฌower as well as a vegetable. ๏ฝ Titan arums are the worldโs largest ๏ฌowers at almost 10 feet in height. 54
