Remember Yom Hashoah By: Mr. Michael Weiss-Holocaust Survivor
1945
The 27th day of Nisan by the Jewish calendar corresponds this year with the secular calendar May 5th. That date was officially declared by the State of Israel and also the same date was passed by the Michigan legislature by Governor Jennifer Granholm, declaring this date Yom Hashoah, the official day to remember The Holocaust. I am sure we the survivors, we do and will remember that day forever when the German Nazis forced us out of our homes, put us in ghettoes and then took us to Auschwitz, Buna Majdanek and to many other concentration camps where we found killing factories which were equipped with gas chambers where they murdered our innocent holy martyrs by poison gas and then they took them to the crematoriums where they burned them to ashes. And today, all what is left of European Jewish life . . . ashes and cemeteries . . . every inch of ground of Europe is cursed because it is soaked with Jewish blood. Every silent barrack in the hundreds of concentration camps over Europe is crying out with the pain of its victims. When the wind blows over Europe, it forever will carry the smoke and ashes of the six million innocent people and children who were murdered by the Nazis. Seventy years after the Shoah, our ears still hear the cries from the gas chambers . . . our noses can still smell the stench from the crematoriums. During the Holocaust years, most of the countries in Europe betrayed our people. Many countries helped in the murder of six million of our holy innocent martyrs. Even the western countries closed their borders, on this day of Yizkor we will remember the righteous Gentiles forever. They put their lives and the lives of their families in jeopardy to hide and save Jewish lives, like the German General Schindler who saved 1,200 Jewish lives. Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who finished college at the University of Michigan, he was sent to the consulate in Budapest where he saved tens of thousands of Jewish lives. Each year, I hear more and more children and grandchildren of the righteous Gentiles are honored at the Holocaust Center in Jerusalem at Yad Vashem. Seventy-one years after liberation, for us survivors the tragedy of The Holocaust is not just a part of history, it is a wound, a cancer that is in our Neshamas….our souls, which continues to hurt . . . it will never heal. As we know, everybody dies sometime. But, God forbid, if a father or mother or a family member dies, there is Lovaya (funeral) and there is a Kever (a grave) but our six million Tzadikim, our six million innocent family members, our one and a half million children, never had a funeral or a grave. Their graves are in heaven and in our hearts in Gan Eden). We Jews believe that the Neshamas (“the souls”) never die . . . that the six million souls are down here with us. I would like to finish with a quote from our great Prime Minister of Israel, Menachem Begin. In 1981, in Jerusalem, we had the Worldwide Gathering of Survivors. And the Prime Minister in his goodbye speech to us finished, and I quote: “And today from this podium, in this hall, on this solemn day, I vow to you that as long as there is an Israel, no Jew will again be forced to wear a yellow star or be tattooed with a number. And I vow to you that there will forever be an Israel . . . so this horror will never be witnessed again! May God give His people, His children . . . strength! May God bless His people and his children with peace. Michael Weiss Holocaust Survivor Speaker at the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus-Farmington Hills Michigan Author of the Book “Chimneys and Chambers” 28

PPP: POST PESACH POUNDS
by Sharon Green, CPT
There’s not much in life we want to lose. However, for many it’s a big one: Pounds. I suggest you start with the hardest working muscle you’ve got. What do you think: a) Heart? b) Abdominals? c) Quadriceps? Answer: Your heart. It may not do any heavy lifting, but your heart is a muscle your body uses constantly. That’s one reason most workouts start with cardiovascular exercise (let’s dance!). Yes, and heart health coupled with good eating equals calorie burn. Want to literally burn as many calories as possible? Keep intake less than expenditure in each 24 hour period. The workout accelerates burn from a weight loss diet so choose something you like to do 30 minutes a day, because you’re making this a habit, right? For some, it’s only conceivable with an upbeat tune, while many need a competitive ballgame, yet for others, more meditative like yoga, for instance. If you’re not sure, start with 30 min brisk walking and then, by bringing oxygen to your brain, your body will let you know what it likes. The next level of fat burn is accomplished through strengthening muscles surrounding each joint. These muscles need to break down before they can be rebuilt and aid in weight loss. Consider getting a trainer to understand this process and perform each move to get the best results. 0UV 6KDURQ *UHHQ LV D FHUWLÀHG SHUVRQDO WUDLQHU WKURXJK WKH 1DWLRQDO $FDGHP\ RI 6SRUWV 0HGLFLQH ZKR RIIHUV SULYDWH WUDLQLQJ WR DOO DJHV DQG DELOLW\ -RLQ KHU IXQ XSEHDW :HGQHVGD\ :RUNRXWV DW WKH 6SHUND KRPH ² 6 2DN 3DUN SP RYHU E\ FSU DHG ÀUVW DLG FHUWLÀHG LQVXUHG 38

The Key To Understanding the Significance of the Omer By: Rabbi Yissocher Frand
The Torah says that on the 16th of Nissan, on the second day of Pesach, the Jewish people were obligated to bring an Omer offering. The bringing of the Omer offering permitted all types of new wheat crops (Chadash) to be eaten. Then the Torah gives us an added command: “And you shall count unto yourselves from the morrow after this sabbath, from the day of your bringing the omer of the waving, seven sabbaths shall it be” [Vayikra 23:15]. There are many difficulties that we find in connection with the Omer offering. Number one: What does the word ‘omer’ mean? Omer was just a measure. It was the amount of grain that they had to bring. Is it not strange that the Korban should be called by the name omer? That is, in effect, like calling it the “Quart Offering” or the “Liter Offering.” Other offerings are called names: Pesach, Todah (Thanksgiving), Shelamim (Peace), Shtei HaLechem (Two Loaves). They have descriptive names. Omer is a measure. Why should that be the name of the Korban? Number two: What is so crucial about this offering, that we tie our entire counting between Pesach and Shavuos to this Offering: The first day of the Omer, the second day of the Omer, etc.? Number three: Why was the omer brought on the 16th day of Nissan? This is not one of the special days of Pesach — it is neither here nor there. What happened on the 16th of Nissan that this Korban should be brought specifically then? The Medrash elaborates on the great merit and significance of the Omer Offering: In its merit Avraham received the land of Canaan; in its merit the Jews were saved in the days of Gideon; in its merit they were saved in the days of Chizkiyahu; in its merit they were saved in the days of Haman; in its merit they were saved in the days of Yechezkel. The Medrash goes on and on an on about how this Omer offering saved the day. What is so meaningful about this Korban HaOmer? The Be’er Yosef says that the key to understanding the Omer is the following Medrash: “G-d said to Moshe ‘In the wilderness I provided a daily Omer of manna for every Jew. As payment, let the Jews now bring for Me an Omer offering every year on the 16th of Nissan.’” This Medrash is telling us that the purpose of the Korban Omer is to remind us of the Omer that we all received in the wilderness. That is why it is called by the name Omer — to remind us of the famous Omer of the manna. As we mentioned many times, the manna that we received in the wilderness is our reminder that it is G-d who provides us with bread from Heaven. Just as in the wilderness we clearly saw, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was G-d who gives us our livelihood, so too in all generations we must remember that as much as we work and as successful as we think we may be, it is G-d that gives us bread from Heaven. That is the lesson of the manna. That is what the Omer Offering is all about. When we are harvesting our new wheat crop and we might tend to think that “my might and the power of my hand, brought me all this wealth” we are commanded to bring a Korban HaOmer to remember the manna. That is why the omer is brought on the 16th on Nissan. We have it by tradition that the manna stopped falling on Adar 7 (the day of Moshe’s death) and they had left over in the vessels until the 16 of Nissan. On the day they ran out of manna they had to bring the Omer Offering. That too is why we count Sefirah for 7 complete weeks and tie it to the Omer Offering. If we brought an Omer Offering only one day of the year, perhaps the crucial lesson that it teaches us would be lost. The Halacha therefore requires that we review this lesson 49 times, over and over, until it becomes second nature. That is why the Medrash goes on and on and mentions how in the merit of the Omer the Jews were saved so many times. If we learn the lesson of livelihood — that it is only G-d who gives us the ability to make a living — this is indeed a lesson that can cause us to merit the acquisition of the Land and all the other salvations enumerated by the Medrash. 46

Programs like door-throughdoor transportation, care management, Holocaust Survivor services, wellness programs such as Mind University, and crisis support help seniors maintain independence and age in place. JFS also connects seniors to home care, Kosher Meals on Wheels, and other community resources, while offering vital aid to caregivers. No one should age alone. For compassionate, respectful assistance,
