MAKING NUMBERS COUNT

The Book of Numbers tells the story of the Jewish people’s journey throughout the desert for 40 years. It is ďŹ lled with the challenges and opportunities our nascent nation faced as it grappled with its newfound freedom and nationhood. But in each of its challenges, we can ďŹ nd dozens of lessons, as we are still contending with similar issues over 3,000 years later. Join us for this fast paced and exciting Lunch and Learn series as we move through the book of Numbers, gaining wisdom and strategies that will uplift and inspire!

A Perspective on Counseling Chezki (Jacob) Finkelstein, MTL, MSCC, LPC

As people we rely on each other for advice, support, knowledge, goods, and services. Even presidents rely on their support staff and kings on their advisors. It is comforting to know we do not have to “go it alone” in the world. When the need for mental health services arises, counselors are there to help. How does counseling work? One way to look at it is that there are two major parts of counseling – skill-building and person-building. Skill-building is like a science; counselors help clients learn and implement specific skills that are known to assist with specific problems. In a way it is like taking a client through a self-help book, but it can be far more effective because the counselor’s involvement allows for individualization of the program, and an increase in motivation and the feeling of accountability. Often, however, deeper work is needed to treat the issues at their source. Feelings, thoughts, and attitudes we maintain about ourselves and the world are often found to be underlying

sources. Changing these is the real hard work of therapy, and it’s what I refer to as “people-building”. The therapist creates an environment of sincere caring and acceptance where the client can feel safe enough to place his or her real self under a microscope. The therapist shares what he sees under its lens and helps the client accept this true self and choose change. This life-changing process can take many months, and as caring professionals we empathize with clients, parents and teachers who desperately await results while it may seem like sessions are spent simply talking or playing games. However, the true change taking place, even if not easily visible, can be monumental and may be all the client needs in order to finish the job on his or her own. Statistically, upwards of 75% of clients leave therapy saying “it didn’t help but the problem went away on its own”! Ironic, isn’t it? Reaching out for mental health treatment may not be an easy decision, but the results can be most rewarding. We are here to help.

METABOLIC BOOST by Sharon Green, CPT How fast your body burns calories depends on several factors. Some people inherit a speedy metabolism. Men tend to burn more calories than women. For most people, metabolism slows steadily after age 40. Although you can’t control your age, gender or genetics, there are other ways to increase your metabolism. Here are 4 of them: 1. Build Muscle Every bound of muscle uses about 6 calories a day just to sustain itself, while each pound of fat burns only 2 calories daily. After a session of strength training, muscles are activated all over your body, raising your average daily metabolic rate. 2. Increase Heart Rate Aerobic or anaerobic exercise may not build big muscles, but it can rev up your metabolism in the hours DIWHU D ZRUNRXW 7KH NH\ LV WR SXVK \RXUVHOI 7R JHW WKH EHQHÂżWV WU\ PRUH LQWHQVH ZRUNRXWV RU LQFOXGH short bursts of jogging during your regular walk. If you don’t want impact on your joints, you can achieve the same cardio intensity with simultaneous upper and lower body actions. 3. Fuel Up with Water Your body needs water to process calories. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism is likely to slow down. 4. Snack Smart Having a small meal or snack every 3 to 4 hours keeps your metabolism cranking, so you burn more calories over the course of a day. Your body burns calories constantly during downtime too, even when your sleeping! This resting metabolic rate is higher in people who follow a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise. Filling a need – one family at a time The Spot fills two concurrent needs. It provides a daily, after-school, three hour program, including dinner, for children with special needs. At the same time, it frees up parents to concentrate on the other children in their family.

A Project Of Detroit Chesed

TOMCHEI SHABBOS DETROIT

Utilizing a storefront setting in our Southfield location, we provide varied and brand new merchandise. Many people visit the home goods gemach each week, ensuring their families are provided with necessary and important goods.

Special programs

There are local families who know all too well what it means to struggle financially. Whether short or long term assistance is needed, complete meals are discreetly distributed to those who need Shabbos food each week. Detroit Chesed Project provides school lunches to children from families in crisis. Lunches are delivered to homes the evening before school, so children know in the morning that all their needs are being taken care of. Lunches are nutritious, filling, and fun.

Throughout the year we have been able to offer many forms of assistance. Backpacks and school supplies. Winter coats for Men, Women and children. Suits and clothing for Yom Tov or Simchas. School shoes for children of all ages. Moving help, furniture, and general assistance for single moms. Our mental health division provides support for those who desperately need guidance and healing. We provide kosher food to abused women and children from the community that need to be in a safe house for their protection.

Winter Preparedness Tips Make sure that your car is ready to take on the snow, ice, and cold 9 9

9

Tires Check the tire pressure and wear on your current tires, and your spare. Bald tires are dangerous in slippery conditions. Battery Batteries die more frequently in the winter. Older batteries are particularly susceptible. Be proactive, get your battery tested for free at local O'Reilly, AutoZone, and many tire stores. Antifreeze Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is essential for your engine in the winter. It works to keep it from freezing. Always make sure that your coolant levels are full and that there aren’t any leaks in your coolant system. Windshield Wipers In the winter your wipers need to be in tip-top shape in order to keep your windshield free of snow, ice, and other dirt that gets kicked up from the road. AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts will install wipers for free, even in the cold. Washer fluid Always keep wiper fluid topped off. Salt and sand from the roads can get kicked up onto your windshield making it hard to see. We recommend keeping an extra bottle of fluid in your car. Lights Make sure that all of your exterior lights are properly functioning. Remember to clear snow and ice off of your lights before hitting the road. Gasoline level Try to keep your tank at least half full. This helps keep accumulated water from freezing inside of your fuel pump and also allows you to keep your car on and the heat running if you get stuck. Defroster and Heat Make sure to check that both of these systems are properly working in your vehicle before weather conditions make them a necessity. Did you know that your AC system is used in the winter to remove moisture and fog from the windshield? Winter Supplies Make sure that you have in your vehicle: Scraper/Brush, Flashlight, Water bottle and a few nonperishable snacks, Cell phone charger, Gloves, and a Blanket. 9
