Long Distance Call RABBI M. KAMENETZKY
G
ood deeds deserve good dividends, but there is one deed mentioned in Parshas Lech Lecha that is veiled in anonymity. However, its dividends lasted so forcefully that the impact was realized almost 500 years later. The Torah tells us about a war that took place. Avram’s nephew Lot was captured. The Torah tells us “Then there came the fugitive and told Abram, the Ivri, who dwelt in the plains of Mamre…” (Genesis 14:13) It obscures the name of the refugee and does not even directly state his message. The next verse, in a seemingly disjointed manner, tells us, “and Abram heard that his kinsman was taken captive, he armed his disciples who had been born in his house -- three hundred and eighteen -- and he pursued them as far as Dan” (ibid v.14).The Medrash tells us that the refugee was Og, a giant of a man who escaped an attack on his fellow giants. He informed Avram that his nephew was alive, albeit taken prisoner with malevolent intent. He figured that Avram would try to liberate Lot and be killed in battle. Og would then marry Sora. (Perhaps that is the reason that the Torah seems to separate what Avram heard from what the refugee told.) For this piece of disguised information, Og receives a seemingly disproportionate reward. He is granted not only longevity, as he lived until the final days of the Jews’ sojourn through the desert, but also the impact of his deed was so potent that Moshe was afraid to attack him before entering the Land of Canaan! Imagine. Og lived for 470 years after the deed, and then Moshe had to be reassured that he need not fear his merits! Rabbi Berel Zisman, one of the few remaining from his illustrious family of prominent Lubavitch Chasidim spent a portion of World War II in a concentration camp in Munich. After the war, he was allowed entry to the United States, but had to wait in the town of Bremerhaven for six weeks. During that time he decided to travel to Bergen-Belsen the notorious concentration camp which was transformed to a displaced person camp to visit a cousin who was there. Dozens of inmates came over to him with names of loved ones scattered across the free plains of the USA. They wanted to get them messages. Berel took their messages. To Sam Finkel from Abraham Gorecki: “I am alive and recuperating. Please try to guarantee employment to allow me to enter the US.” And so on. One card was for Jacob Kamenecki from a niece from Minsk. “Please be aware that I survived the war and will be going back to Minsk.” Armed with lists of names and some addresses,
18
Berel arrived in the US where he became a student in the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Crown Heights. Knowing no English, upon his arrival he asked a cousin to address postcards. Each had a message written in Yiddish “My name is Berel Zisman. I have just arrived from Europe - and have regards from…”He filled in the blanks and ended the brief note on each card with, “for further information, I can be contacted at the Lubavitch Yeshiva, corner Bedford and Dean in Crown Heights.” Rabbi Zisman does not really now how many people received his cards, but one person who lived in a basement apartment on Hewes Street definitely did. When Rabbi Jacob Kamenecki, one of the United States’ leading sages, came to the Lubavitch yeshiva looking for Berel Zisman, a war refugee who had arrived at the yeshiva only a week ago, no one knew why. Berel was called out of the study hall and met the elderly man, filled him in on all the particulars about the status of his relative, and returned to his place. When the young man returned to his seat, he was shocked at the celebrity treatment he once again received. “You mean you don’t know who that Rabbi was? He is the Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Voda’ath!” Berel shuddered, feeling terrible that he made the revered scholar visit him. A while later, he met the Rosh Yeshiva and approached him. “Rebbe, please forgive me, I had no intention to make you come to me to get regards. Had I known who you were I would surely have gone to your home and given the information to you in person!” Reb Yaakov was astounded. He refused to accept the apology. “Heaven forbid! Do you realize what kind of solace I have hearing about the survival of my relative. I came to you, not only to hear the news, but to thank you, in person, for delivering it!” Imagine. Avram was nearly 80 years old, he had no descendants, and the only link to the house of his father’s family -- at least documented as a disciple of Avram’s philosophies -- was Lot. Now even the whereabouts and future of that man were unknown. And when Og delivered the news of his whereabouts, perhaps Avram’s hope for the future was rekindled. Perhaps his gratitude toward Og abounded. And though Og spoke one thing, and Avram heard another, the reward for the impact on Avram’s peace of mind was amazingly powerful. We often make light of actions and ramifications. The Torah tells us this week, in a saga that ends five books and some four hundred years later, that small tidings travel a very long distance. WONDER BREAD PRODUCTS are now OU certified in certain, but not all, regions of the USA. Wonder Bread products that are certified by the OU bear the OU symbol. Wonder Bread products that do not bear the OU symbol are not OU certified. CARAMEL TOOTSIE POPS are certified Kosher and dairy by the OU, even without the OU-D on the package. NEAR EAST RICE, COUSCOUS and other grain mixes bearing an OU come in three categories: pareve (plain OU), “OU MEAT “, and “OU DAIRY”. Those bearing ”OU Meat” contain actual meat ingredients, even if no obvious meat ingredients are listed, and those bearing “OU Dairy” contain dairy ingredients. Each package should be carefully checked to determine its correct status. – Near East Pasta mix products with Delicate Sauce are not Kosher, and do not bear an OU. HERSHEY’S SYRUPS: The OU has informed us that all Hershey’s Chocolate, Strawberry, Caramel and Sundae Syrups, that bear an OU-D, contain actual dairy. MOTT’S APPLE WHITE GRAPE JUICE was mistakenly labeled with an OK symbol. This product is not certified by OK Kosher. JACK DANIEL’S MUSTARD is available in several varieties that bear an OU. However, Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Mustard does not bear an OU and is not certified Kosher. It was mistakenly sold recently in a local Kosher section. M. SHATILA GOURMET MEDITERRANEAN SWEETS (baklava and pastry items) are no longer Star-D certified, even when bearing the Star-D symbol, due to Kashrus violations. HERO NUT COCOA SPREAD mistakenly bears an OU symbol. The OU does not certify this product. WEGMAN’S CHERRY MIXED FRUIT is not certified by the OU. Some packaging mistakenly bears the OU symbol. 26
GIA RUSSA GREEK SALAD sold in the U.S. was labeled with an unauthorized COR 77. This product is not Kosher. KEY FOOD BALSAMIC VINEGAR mistakenly bears an OU symbol on some labels. The OU does not certify this product. SOPHIA POMEGRANATE JUICE bears an unauthorized OU symbol. SALLY SHERMAN VEGGIE LOADED TUNA SALAD is not certified by the OU. A limited amount of this product was labeled with an unauthorized OU, and was primarily distributed in the Northeast. LAY’S STAX SOUR CREAM & ONION POTATO CRISPS contains dairy ingredients and is certified OU–D. Some packaging was mistakenly labeled without the D designation. GREAT VALUE ENRICHED INSTANT GRITS BUTTER FLAVOR sold at Wal-Mart is certified OU-D, but some packaging was mistakenly printed without the D. This product contains dairy ingredients. HONEY ROASTED CASHEWS, HONEY ROASTED ALMONDS, and HONEY ROASTED PEANUTS produced by TERRAFINA, LLC (Bronx, NY) are no longer certified pareve, and were mistakenly labeled with an OK symbol instead of the OK-D. The cashews and almonds are now dairy. The peanuts with the plain OK are not certified. CAMBRIDGE & THAMES (C&T) HONEY ROASTED PEANUTS mistakenly bears the Star-K symbol. In fact, it should bear the Star-D symbol and is dairy / non-Cholov Yisroel. THE OBSERVANT JEW
Are You a Proffesional? BY RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ
One day, I received an e-mail from an organization that said, “Business Proffesional available to…” It doesn’t matter what they were offering to do, because anyone who reads that e-mail would say, “It sure looks like they need a professional, they can’t even spell professional. How UN-professional!” I wrote the sender of the e-mail, who responded that he wasn’t responsible for sending out the e-mails, though his name was on them. He had already yelled at the person who sent it out, and told him how unprofessional it was to have that typo go out. I could tell from his e-mail that he was rather upset with his underling. As it was a Jewish company, I tried to appease the fellow by telling him that I was sure people would understand it was a typo and would not reflect poorly on him. I thought of the famous story of the Chofetz Chaim, when he ate at an inn and his traveling companion said the soup needed salt. The Chofetz Chaim was incensed that the other Rabbi could be so insensitive. When his companion didn’t understand what the big deal was, the Chofetz Chaim told him, “The hostess doesn’t cook the food herself; she likely has a cook in the kitchen. If a woman has to cook for someone else, she may be a widow, possibly supporting orphans. Now, the hostess will go and yell at her, causing her pain, and possibly firing her.” The other Rav thought the Chofetz Chaim was overreacting so they walked into the kitchen and saw exactly what the Chofetz Chaim had feared. The other Rav interrupted the hostess and assured her, “No, no, the food was delicious; there were no problems at all.”
I tried to convince the fellow whose name was on it not to be angry with his employee. It wasn’t easy, and he didn’t seem too happy. After all, it wasn’t really professional to misspell a word in the Subject of a blast e-mail, especially when that word was Professional. It also seemed that this wasn’t the first time a mistake had been made. I thought about it. Did the person really not know how to spell the word? Did he not know how to use spellcheck? I think not. I’m sure there were other forces at work here. Most people in business truly wish to be professional, and there are reasons why it might not come through. Problem number one is time. When we are rushed, we fail to take the time to doublecheck our work. When someone is yelling at us to hurry up, we go into defensive mode, and time becomes more of a priority than careful review, and we make mistakes. Perhaps if his boss had been less demanding regarding the time, the employee might have taken the time to review his work and there would have been no embarrassment. We all get that way sometimes. When our child seems to be dawdling or wasting time in the morning, aren’t we apt to yell, “Do you realize it’s 8:45 already?!” (They do now…) In the rush, the child invariably forgets something, like a test paper they had to bring back to school, or finishing breakfast, and afterwards we wish we hadn’t rushed them so much. Sometimes they don’t forget items, but the feeling of anxiety they felt when being rushed is something they’ll remember for a long time. It’s up to bosses and parents alike to keep this in mind when we push other
Rushing is dangerous. When we rush, we don’t take the time to think things through.

people to act. Now, of course, sometimes the few extra minutes WILL make a difference. But when they won’t; keep your cool. Problem number two is apathy. Sometimes people feel that even if something isn’t perfect, people won’t mind. Take spelling. In this day and age of text messages and tweets, “u cn b sure ppl don’t care,” they think. Even if people are writing things out completely, to them, spelling isn’t a priority, as they assume that most people are awful spellers. When our kids make mistakes and we correct them, they may say, “Whatever, it’s no big deal.” At that point, we need to step in and CALMLY explain why it does matter, and that it is a big deal. We need the employee to know that the e-mail will change the way people think about the organization. We need the child to know that if they don’t know how to solve the math problem, there will be more problems down the road. Of course, there is a flip side, as well. Many companies send out Holiday cards to remind their clients that their businesses exist. A team of people assigned to this task will agonize over whether the card should be flat or a fold-over flap, what picture should be on it, and what words they should use. Should they write “Happy Holidays” or “Season’s Greetings” or something else entirely? After hours and days of debate, they will settle on one thing, with some people still grumbling that it will be a complete failure because the customer will say this, that, or the other thing. When it finally gets to the client, do you know what his reaction will be? “Oh, so-andso sent me a card. Any chatchkes in it? No? Oh, well.” Then, “pop,” into the circular file it goes. All the effort was put into something that really wasn’t so important after all. Now let’s apply these ideas to our own journeys here on Earth.
1. Rushing is dangerous. When we rush, we don’t take the time to think things through. This is one of the Yetzer Hara’s key tools. Keep people busy enough and they’ll never think before they do things. It worked for Pharaoh, and it still works for the Evil Inclination. Now that you know he’ll try to rush you, ignore him, and make sure you come out looking professional. Rush others, and you can expect poor results. That’s why HaShem gives us a whole lifetime to get it right. 2. Don’t be apathetic. One of the most dangerous phrases I know is, “Do you think G-d really cares if…?” Short answer: Yes, I do. The Torah doesn’t put any extra words in. If it’s in there, there’s a reason. Don’t rationalize your way out of a job, especially when that job is to live properly. 3. Figure out what’s really important. Don’t agonize over things that don’t really matter. People are NOT thinking about how you look or what kind of car you drive. If they are, then those aren’t the people you need to be concerned about. Working is important, but only because G-d wants us to work. He knows it won’t make a difference in what He’ll give us, and we should too. Don’t stress about how others will perceive you if you’re doing what you should. If we take these guidelines to heart, we will one day be able to look proudly back on our careers on Earth and say, “Yup, I was a consummate professional.”
Don’t stress about how others will perceive you if you’re doing what you should.

WEIGHT BEARING EXERCISE
Benefits:
1 2 3
2/28/13 4:42 PM
by Sharon Green
INCREASE BONE DENSITY: Slow down or stop loss of bone mass and build strong bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. BURN FAT (even if you want to lose in a different area than in your arms!)
BUILD MUSCLE (known as Lean Body Mass): Makes joints, tendons & ligaments hardier and more capable of avoiding injury. Frighteningly, women tend to lose 5 to 7 pounds of muscle every decade if they’re not doing some sort of weight bearing exercise.
4
CHANGE METABOLISM: Metabolism will miraculously adjust itself, significantly speeding it up in most cases, however underweight individuals will find it slow down.*
5
BUILD STRENGTH: Boost coordination and improve overall balance.
*Additionally, there is some research that indicates that weight bearing exercise for several weeks will lower cholesterol levels which can greatly reduce the chance of heart attacks.
