The Shidduch Crisis

(Written & paid for by a concerned member of our community.)

M

uch has been written and discussed regarding the “shidduch crisis” and our hishtadlus . On a communal level, our askanim have expended heroic efforts that range from advocating an earlier dating age for our boys to commissioning out of town shadchanim for our girls. On a grassroots level, individuals have coordinated shidduch network meetings and various events to increase personal and communal zechuyos. The above suggestions are admirable and will certainly change and level the playing field in the long run, but most do not directly address the needs of our current older single girls. They also do not address the glaring problem of our out of town shadchanim not really knowing our daughters. Currently a girl either goes to Lakewood and meets several shadchanim or the shadchanim come to Detroit and 10’s of girls line up to meet them over the course of a few hours. Best case scenario, a girl has 5 minutes of face time with each shadchan and is then quickly replaced by the next hopeful, whose resume differs only by name and perhaps seminary. It is difficult to imagine that the shadchanim can actually remember all the girls they meet, let alone keep track of their individual personalities and needs. In contrast, they see the eligible boys on a daily basis, in yeshiva, at weddings or at Bagel Nosh. The boys remain a constant, while the girls are a moving target, with the most recent one getting set up. The girls have a “shelf life” that lasts only until the next crop of fresh faces comes around. Many girls are lucky and the shadchan picks a winner on the first go, but the others can sit around for months, long forgotten in the shadchan’s mind. Parents constantly straddle the fence between being an advocate and being a pest. That is where you and I come in. The solution is simple, the reverberations and impact immediate. The most common complaint among shadchanim is that they only get recognition or payment when they are successful in making a match but no remuneration or thanks for the unsuccessful ones. Many lay people try their COMMUNITY LINKS

|

OCTOBER 2014

hand at matchmaking, but throw in the towel after one or two attempts for the above reason. We can change that. You don’t have to be an askan to make a difference. We can actually get more people making Shidduchim-people who actually know our daughters, who would advocate for them and who are already in Lakewood or other yeshiva centers. My proposal is simple and all it requires is a check. If someone is successful in setting your daughter/son up on a date and it doesn’t work out, send them a check. Not a full shadchanus, but a check for $50 or $100 or $150 along with a Thank You card . We will call it “Hishtadlus Gelt” .They deserve it. They spent time and effort on your behalf. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts in a tangible way. These small checks if given regularly will make Shadchanus a true vocation. Young couples in Lakewood who know both boys and girls will be incentivized to redt more shidduchim. They can easily supplement their incomes to the tune of several hundred dollars a month by setting up their friends with former roomates, chavrusos or neighbors. Remember, the ultimate decision as to whether a suggestion is tzugepassed is still up to you. As a parent it is you who determines whether you child will actually meet with the suggested shidduch. Payment is only given if the two meet, regardless of how many times. If the net result of this is that your son/daughter finds their bashert sooner rather than later would you not agree that those dollars were well spent? Imagine the exponential impact if Detroit adopts this proposal as a community. One last thought: This past year Detroit was blessed with several in-town shidduchim. One of Detroit’s treasures is Mrs. Gendelman who (although she will not give me the real number) has made in the neighborhood of 50 shidduchim in her part time career as a shadchan. In conversation with her she indicated that she has the resumes of almost 200 girls but not enough resumes of boys. If you have a son, nephew , brother etc. who will be here over Yom Tov why not have him spend 20-30 minutes meeting with Mrs. Gendelman. Let us help her advocate for our girls. Perhaps your son, brother, nephew might luck out and end up with one of our very own. Best wishes for a Kseeva V’Chaseema Tova. 31

The Happiness Box By: Rabbi Label Lam

Every once in a while when reading a bed time story to the younger children I find myself in the end wiping a tear from the corner of my eye and wondering if any of the children are really capable of appreciating the depth of the seemingly simple story, if it is not meant more for the parents and if we get it either.

to do. The challenge is taken up by a friend who throws a stick a distance and commands the dog, “Fetch!” The dog looks up at him and begins his diatribe. “All day long people tell me what to do. Roll over! Jump! Go through the fiery hoop! Good dog. Bad dog. Sit! Heal. Eat this! Don’t eat that! I can’t take it anymore. It’s no fun being a dog. I hate it. I wish I were never born! The fellow interrupts the dog and tells him with a sense of outrage, “All I asked you to do was fetch.” The dog answers back with surprise, “Ohhhhhh! I thought you said “Kvetch”.

One such book reappeared on the bookshelf recently. It must have been with all the stuff for sukkos ‘cause it certainly belongs there. It’s called, “The Happiness Box”. The plot is something like this. There’s this kid that’s never happy with what he has. He finds things to complain about all day. Whatever he has is not enough or not just right and all he can find is Sukkos is referred to in our liturgy as “the time fault. of our happiness”. How do we celebrate? We leave our lovely homes and sit exposed to the One day after his family moves into a beautiful elements in little boxes. We are commanded by new house a giant package arrives. His clever father convinces him Maybe the story is not so simplistic and the that the box is the real item of desire and it’s just joke not so (as we say in yiddish) “farfetched”. for him. Hearing I like.” And other such affirming statements that clearly the commandment as it is pronounced is put him into a state of mind that makes him feel a critical point. No where does it say, “kvetch”! rich and full. After a while he’s complaining a lot less. There are over 169 different kinds of progressive lenses. How do you know which are best for you?

0RVW SHRSOH ZKHQ WKH\ ÂżUVW JHW SURJUHVVLYH OHQVHV NQRZ YHU\ OLWWOH DERXW WKH RSWLRQV DYDLODEOH There are many things you need to know before you buy progressive lenses. Done right they provide better sight, more comfort and no strain. Done poorly they can be a source of more stress, headaches and poor vision.

0DNH VXUH \RX JHW WKH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ WKH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV DQG WKH ULJKW IUDPHV 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ How lenses are made have changed very quickly as technology has improved our abilities to create better progressive lenses. Digital lenses provide for a wider field of vision, greater accuracy of progression and clear peripheral vision. 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV With progressive lenses especially, millimeters make a difference. Is the reading part of the lens sitting at the exact spot that it should? Does the distance area begin too high or too low? Besides the measurements in the lenses, your posture needs to be taken into account. If your optical professional is not measuring all of the

areas you will be getting a less that optimum visual experience. 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV Most people think frames are all about fashion - how they look. While finding frames that suit you is important, finding frames that will enhance your vision by how it accommodates your lenses is even more important.

6REHO (\HFDUH VSHFLDOL]HV LQ SURJUHVVLYH OHQVHV

Our state of the art facility has the latest technology for the best quality lenses available. We have digital lenses that can be tailored for a person’s work tasks and individual needs, and our measuring process is the most thorough anywhere. We have an extensive collection of frames ranging from beautiful designer frames to budget frames of time tested quality. We also carry a very large selection of quality children’s frames. 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV &RPH LQ IRU D IUHH FRQVXOWDWLRQ PHQWLRQ WKLV DG DQG UHFHLYH RII IUDPHV DQG OHQVHV RQ D FRPSOHWH SDLU ([FOXGHV DQWL UHÀHFWLYH FRDWLQJ DGGHG WR OHQV
