All in a Day’s Work RABBI M. KAMENETZKY

R

evenge. Though the Torah warns us against acting on our emotions, it’s hard to control the desire. In fact, a dogma of modern society preaches to us not to get mad, rather to get even. But Yoseph discloses his real identity in this week’s portion, and despite a 22-year backdrop filled with excuses for anger, revenge, and retribution, he stays calm and fulfilled. Surely, we should expect to find harsh words of criticism if not acts of payback. But we don’t. After Yoseph reveals his identity, and the brothers are shocked, rather than chastising his brothers, Yoseph appeases them! “Come close to me if you please, and they came close.” And he said, “I am Joseph your brother -- it is me whom you sold into Egypt. And now, be not distressed, nor reproach yourselves for having sold me here, for it was to be a provider that G-d sent me ahead of you“(Genesis 45:4-5). He explains to them that the entire scenario was not even their doing but part of a Divine plan to contend with the world-hunger. “Thus Hashem has sent me ahead of you to insure your survival in the land and to sustain you for a momentous deliverance. And now -- it was not you who sent me here, but G-d; He has made me father to Pharaoh, master of his entire household, and ruler throughout the entire land of Egypt” (ibid v6-7). What type of man has the capacity not only to ignore horrible injustice totally, but to revel in it, saying that it was all meant to be, without the slightest display of bitterness or animosity? It takes an unique attitude about life. Joel Mandel and Julius Rosenzweig have a large electrical supply house in Long Island City, NY. Their vast warehouse occupies over a million cubic feet of space containing thousands of different electrical components, from transformers as large as the average-size garage to tiny cathodes that could dance on the head of a pin. It was a couple of years ago when some electrical doo-dad, that seemed to be a vital organ of one of my children’s battery-operated what-nots, went on the blink. With zero electrical know-how, I decided to bring the component to my friends at Globe Electrical Supply and maybe they could find me a replacement. Weaving my way through a labyrinth of shelves, boxes, and drawers, I climbed some metal steps and made my way to the old office that appeared out of a 1950s Hollywood set. An old wooden desk was the pedestal for a dusty computer that probably strained 18

harder than their human principals to maintain the vast inventory. I showed the part to Joel, who looked at the tiny part and smiled. He called over one of the workers, “Warren,” he said, “please get the rabbi a…” I couldn’t make out the exact name, but it sounded like flux-capacitator, though I highly doubt that my kid’s toy was dying for lack of a lack of a flux-capacitator! Like a Tomahawk missile directed toward a predestined mark, Warren took the injured electrical component, weaved through the myriad rooms, the barrage of boxes, and an almost unlimited array of electrical paraphernalia. Homing in on the exact location, Warren scaled a ladder that looked as if it could have been used to wash the windows of a Manhattan skyscraper, and about 30 feet off the ground, with amazing agility and precise guidance, he reached for his target -- a small cardboard box. Its edges were yellowed with age, but I knew it had not been touched in five years. He placed his hand into the box and plucked out a component, which exactly matched my broken one. As if he had rehearsed this scene from the day he started working, he held the component between his thumb and forefinger, then smiled, opened the human vise, letting the piece drop into my palm. “Here’s the sucker!” Stunned at both the accuracy and speed of the retrieval, I reacted as if I had just seen a minor miracle. “Warren!” I exclaimed, “how’d you do that?” “Do what?” he asked with a shrug. “Do what?” I repeated with an air of incredulity. “You just found a microscopic part hidden like a needle in all the hay in Kansas! And you knew exactly where it was.” Warren just shrugged. “I didn’t do nothin’ special. That’s my job!” When a person understands his mission, no portion of its fulfillment merits undue emotion. In Pirkei Avos, 2:9 Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai tells us, “If you have learned much Torah, do not pride yourself in it, for this is the purpose for which you were created.” If a person thinks “that’s my job” about his every good deed, if his mission is clearly mapped in front of him, then all obstacles become insignificant pittances, easily overcome and able to be ignored because after all, they are in fact all in a day’s work. Chanukah:

A Little Background Information RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO

C

hanukah, which begins on the 25th day of the month of Kislev and lasts eight days, is known mainly for the ritual of lighting the Menorah, an eight branched candelabra. Before we discuss this and other rituals and observances associated with Chanukah, a little historical background about Chanukah is in order. Chanukah, unlike the other Rabbinically ordained observances (Purim, the Four Fasts), is not mentioned explicitly at all in Scripture. Even in the Talmud, there is little discussion about Chanukah. The Gemora in the tractate of Shabbos (21b) writes: “What is (the reason for) Chanukah? For our Rabbis have taught ‘On the 25th of Kislev, the days of Chanukah, which are eight (start), on which eulogies and fasting are not permitted.’ - For when the Greeks entered the sanctuary of the Temple, they made all of the oil there ritually impure (and therefore unfit for use in the Temple). When the Hashmonean dynasty gained the upper hand and defeated them, they searched and found only one flask of oil on which the seal of the High Priest remained (which indicated it was not defiled). There was only enough in this flask to light (the Menorah in the Temple) for one day. A miracle occurred and they were able to light (the Menorah) with it for eight days. The next year, they established and made (these days) a holiday, with Hallel (praises of G-d) and expressions of thanks (to G-d).” There are many commentators who elaborate on the Gemora. One of these is the Aruch HaShulchan. His words, which follow, add to the very general description that the Gemora offers. There are more detailed historical works which deal with the background of Chanukah. However, the general description of the Aruch HaShulchan 32

is a good starting place for the discussion of Chanukah which will follow in later issues. The Aruch HaShulchan (Orech Chayim 670) writes that: At the time of the Second Temple, during the reign of the wicked kings known as Antiochus, decrees were issued on the nation of Israel. These decrees had the effect of anulling the practice of the holy Jewish religion. The Jews were not permitted to study Torah or perform Mitzvos. The money of the Jews was confiscated, and the Jewish daughters were snatched. They went into the Temple where they performed improper acts and defiled the ritually pure. They pained the nation of Israel and pressured them immensely until the point where Hashem, the G-d of their forefathers, had mercy on them and saved them from the evil hands that were persecuting them. Hashem saved them through the hands of the holy and pure Hasmoneans, who were high priests, with Mattisyahu and his sons, who fought with Antiochus. The victory occurred in a way that went against the laws of nature, as the Hashmoneans, with their righteous troops, were very small in number, while Antiochus fell upon them with a great number of people, with many elephants, and with horsemen and chariots. continued from page 32

Hashem favored His nation of Israel and therefore let the strong fall into the hands of the weak, the wicked into the hands of the righteous, the impure into the hands of the pure. Furthermore, those traitors from the nation of Israel who sided with Antiochus fell into the hands of those who studied Torah. Then, the name of G-d was elevated and sanctified in the world, and the light of Torah with its purity shined, and the name of the nation of Israel reached a level of great stature amongst the nations of the world . This miracle came to a completion on the 25th day of Kislev. There was, however, another miracle. When the nation of Israel entered the Temple to purify it, all of the people were ritually impure because they came into contact with the dead during the course of

the battles. A person who is impure because of contact with the dead can only become pure through a process which takes seven days. It was only after these seven days that people were able to obtain a supply of pure oil. Furthermore, it took 8 days to make the round-trip needed to obtain pure oil. Only one flask of pure oil, which still bore the unbroken seal of the High Priest, was found in the Temple. Hashem performed a miracle, and this flask of oil which should only have lasted for one day was able to be used to light the Menorah in the Temple for eight days, until which time no additional pure oil was available. We therefore have eight days on which we praise and give thanks to Hashem. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org

LIGHTING THE MENORAH: HALACHAH AND CUSTOM

by Rabbi Doniel Neustadt

T

he method of performing the mitzvah chavivah (“precious mitzvah”) of kindling the Chanukah lights has generated countless halachic debates over the years. For many questions regarding the particulars of fulfilling this mitzvah there is no clear consensus and the practical halachah will depend on the traditions and customs of each family. The following Discussion highlights some of the unresolved disputes concerning the lighting of the menorah and makes recommendations for those who do not have a clear-cut family custom: Issue: The proper time to light Chanukah candles l’chatchillah is a subject of much halachic debate. Some are careful to light Chanukah lights right at sunset, others a little bit later, while others wait for nightfall. If you have a family custom, follow it. Otherwise, the preferred time to light is 20-25 minutes after sunset. Issue: Where to place the first light on the menorah—at the extreme right or the extreme left. In addition, there are various customs as to which direction the lighting takes on subsequent nights—from right to left or from left to right. One who does not have a specific family custom should place the first light at the extreme right side of the menorah (facing the person who is lighting). On subsequent nights, each additional light is placed to the left of the first one, and the lighting begins from the newest light, going from left to right. Issue: Whether or not married women should light a menorah in their home. If you have a family custom, follow it. Otherwise, married women should not light, and if they do, they should do so before their husband lights. Issue: Whether or not single girls living in their parents’ home light Chanukah lights themselves. If you have a family custom, follow it. Otherwise, it is better that they not light. All agree that a single woman or girl living alone is obligated to light Chanukah lights.

Issue: There is a three-way dispute as to the correct text for the conclusion of the first blessing over the lights. It is either lehadlik ner Chanukah, lehadlik ner shel Chanukah, or lehadlik ner shelachanukah (one word, patach underneath the lamed). If you have a family custom, follow it. If not, follow the third option. Issue: At the conclusion of the second blessing, some say bazman hazeh while others say bizman hazeh. Follow your family custom. If you don’t have one, either text may be used. Issue: At the conclusion of the blessing of shehechayanu, 48

some say lazman hazeh while others say lizman hazeh. Follow your family custom. If you don’t have one, say lazman hazeh. Issue: Some complete the recitation of all of the blessings and then begin to kindle the lights. Others begin to light after reciting the first blessing of lehadlik. Unless that is your family custom, recite all of the blessings and then begin the lighting. Issue: Reciting Haneiros halalu after lighting the first light or after all of the lights are kindled. If you have a family custom, follow it. If not, recite Haneiros halalu after all of the lights have been lit. All opinions agree that one may not begin reciting Haneiros halalu before lighting the first light, and if one did so, he must repeat the blessing of lehadlik, since it is considered as if he spoke between reciting the blessing and performing the mitzvah. Issue: In some families, the custom is not to eat a meal while the candles are lit. There is no halachic basis for this custom, so if that is not your custom, do not adopt it. Issue: Women refraining from doing certain household chores while the candles are burning. Some women refrain from doing these chores the entire Chanukah, while others refrain during the first and last day only. Some women refrain from sewing, doing laundry and heavy cleaning, while others refrain from cooking, baking and other light kitchen work as well. Some women refrain from work for half an hour after lighting candles while others refrain from work as long as candles are burning anywhere in the community, which may be as late as midnight. If you have a family custom follow it. Otherwise, refrain only from sewing, doing laundry and heavy cleaning throughout the eight days of Chanukah, but only for an half an hour after the menorah was lit. Issue: Whether or not Havdalah takes precedence over Chanukah lights on Motzaei Shabbos. If your family has a specific custom, follow it. Otherwise recite Havdalah first. Issue: Some say al ha-nissim during Shemoneh Esrei and v’al ha-nissim during Birkas ha-Mazon, while others say v’al ha-nissim both times. All agree that during Birkas ha-Mazon one must say v’al ha-nissim. Unless one has a family custom, he should say v’al hanissim both during Shemoneh Esrei and Birkas ha-Mazon. Issue: Reciting magdil or migdol during Birkas haMazon. If you have a family custom, follow it. Otherwise say magdil. COMMUNITY LINKS

Chanukah & Thanksgiving

Together

T

his year, we will be celebrating Chanukah on Thanksgiving, so expect turkey and latkes on the table!

earliest Chanukah can be is 11/29. The next time Chanukah falls on 11/28 is 2146, which is the Monday after thanksgiving.

This is the only time it will ever happen.

Therefore, 2013 is the only time Chanukah will ever overlap with Thanksgiving.

Why has it never happened before? Thanksgiving is set as the fourth Thursday in November, meaning the latest it can be is 11/28. 11/28 is also the earliest Chanukah can be. The Jewish calendar repeats on a 19 year cycle, and Thanksgiving repeats on a 7 year cycle. You would therefore expect them to coincide roughly every 19x7 = 133 years. Looking back, this is approximately correct the last time it would have happened is 1861. However, Thanksgiving was only formally established by President Lincoln in 1863. So, it has never happened before.

Of course, if the Jewish calendar is never modiďŹ ed in any way, then it will slowly move forward through the Gregorian calendar, until it loops all the way back to where it is now. So, Chanukah would again fall on Thursday, 11/28 in the year 79,811! So on November 28th, 2013, enjoy your turkey and your latkes! Happy Chanukah & Thanksgiving!

Why won’t it ever happen again? The reason is because the Jewish calendar is very slowly getting out of sync with the solar calendar, at a rate of 4 days per 1000 years. This means that while presently Chanukah can be as early as 11/28, over the years the calendar will drift forward, such that the 56

Linking our table to yours..... SWEET POTATO AND CHIVE LATKES 1 medium potato 1 large sweet potato 1 egg 1/2 cup of flour 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons chopped chives 3 teaspoons salt 3 teaspoons black pepper

Peel and shred the two potatoes, then stir them together in a bowl of water and strain. Whisk together the egg, flour, garlic, cayenne and cinnamon. Add the chives, salt, and pepper; whisk until smooth. Fold in the sweet potato and potato, making sure the batter is thoroughly combined. On a large skillet, heat up some oil and drop about 3 tablespoons of batter into the skillet just before the oil begins to smoke. Fry the latkes until browned, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Serve with a spoonful of sour cream. Send your favorite recipe to detroitlinks@gmail.com
