A Glimpse of Buddhist Psychology
Dear Reader, I don't know about you, but I've had a very busy summer, full of family gatherings, births and weddings. It has been great but the constant pace of activity over the last few weeks means that I am in need of some serious mental rest. So I am glad that classes at Jamyang are starting up again and that I will soon be able to spend some time there. Of course Jamyang has not been idle over the summer. Read the updates on the community programme and the work camp to see how much has actually been done. On the surface Jamyang seems so stable and to offer such a serene environment but, under the surface there is a lot of work that goes on to offer us all this wonderful place ( a bit like this duck). So make the most of it this coming academic year, there are some great classes and teachings, and stock up on wisdom, happiness and kindness to share with others

A Glimpse of Buddhist Psychology, by Lama Yeshe We consider Lord Buddha's teaching to be more akin to psychology and philosophy than to what you might usually imagine religion to be. Many people seem to think that religion is mostly a question of belief, but if your religious practice relies mainly on faith, sometimes one skeptical question from a friend - "What on earth are you doing?" - can shatter it completely: "Oh my god! Everything I've been doing is wrong." Therefore before you commit yourself to any spiritual path, make sure you know Image courtesy of Brita Mackay via Robina Courtin exactly what you are doing. Buddhist psychology teaches that emotional attachment to the sense world results from physical and mental feelings. Your five senses provide information to your mind, producing various feelings, all of which can be classified into three groups: pleasant, unpleasant and neutral. These feelings arise in response to either physical or mental stimuli. When we experience pleasant feelings, emotional attachments ensues, and when that pleasant feeling subsides, craving arises, the desire to experience it again. The nature of this mind is dissatisfaction; it disturbs our mental peace because its nature is agitation. When we experience unpleasant feelings, we automatically dislike and want to get rid of them; aversion arises, again disturbing our mental peace. When we feel neutral, we ignore what's going on and don't want to see reality. Thus whatever feelings arise in our daily lives pleasant, unpleasant or neutral - they disturb us emotionally and there's no balance or equanimity in our minds. So examining your own feelings in this way has nothing to do with belief, has it? This is not some Eastern, Himalayan mountain thing. This is you; this is your thing. You can't refute what I'm saying by claiming, "I have no feelings." It's so simple isn't it? Furthermore, many of our negative actions are reactions to feeling. See for yourself. When you feel pleasant as a result of contact with people or other sense objects, analyse exactly how you feel, why you feel pleasant. The pleasant feeling is not in the external object, is it? It's in your mind. I'm sure we can all agree that the pleasant feeling is not outside of you. So, why do you feel that way? If you experiment like this, you will discover that happiness and joy, discomfort and unhappiness, and neutral feelings are all within you. You will find that you yourself are mainly responsible for the feelings you experience and that you cannot blame others for the way you feel:"He makes me miserable; she makes me miserable; that stuff makes me miserable." You cannot blame society for your problems, although that's what we always do, isn't it? It's not realistic. Once you realise the true evolution of your mental problems, you'll never blame any other living being for how you feel. That realisation is the beginning of good communication with and respect for others. Normally, we're unconscious; we act

unconsciously and automatically disrespect and hurt others. We don't care; we just do it, that's all. Many people, even some psychologists, seem to think that you can stop the emotion of craving-desire by feeding it with some object or other: if you are suffering because your husband or wife has left you, getting another one will solve your problem. That's impossible. Without understanding the characteristic nature of your feelings of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral, you will never discover the nature of your mental attitudes, and without discovering that, you can never put an end to your emotional problems. Geshe Tashi's column Hello Everybody, I hope you have had a good summer and are feeling relaxed and happy. I am very pleased that we will be hosting a visit by Jangtse Choje Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin at Jamyang in September. We are very fortunate that this great teacher is coming to give us precious teachings. There are very few well qualified great masters and so this is a great opportunity for us. Jangtse Choje Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin has been coming to Jamyang for many years now and I hope you will all make an effort to attend some of his teachings. Jangtse Choje Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin will give both a White Tara long life initiation and a Green Tara Jenang. As well as these he will be teaching from the Special Insight sections of the middling Lamrim. He is also continuing with the series of teachings for the the Vajrayogini practitioners. Do make a special effort and join us at Jamyang for as many of these sessions as you are able to.

Director's Column Welcome back! Hope everyone has enjoyed a good break and made the most of the wonderful spell of warmer weather over the last couple of months. Many, many thanks indeed to all those who gave up some of their precious time over this period to make the Work Camp and the Jumble Sale the great successes that they both were. As the season is changing and the summer is coming to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the importance and benefits of retreat and what more we can do to assist the cultivation and growth of a deeper and more sustainable retreat culture here in the UK. Our precious teacher Lama Zopa Rinpoche's advice tells us that: "Students who are not interested in retreat and practice should realise if they want something for their heart, if they love themselves and want to do something to affect their heart, and fill their hearts with great satisfaction, deep joy, and meaning, then this comes from retreat and practice". Perhaps, most importantly, we should think about where it might be possible to find the most suitable environment to undertake retreat. The Land of Joy project is specifically dedicated to creating a community for retreat. Land of Joy's Buddhist retreat community will be located in the beautiful countryside of the UK. All of Land of Joy's services - retreat centre, community and hospice - will operate in the context of a peaceful environment which seeks to act as an example of sustainability and harmony. A diverse programme will be provided with facilities to serve the needs and interests of a wide range of people, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike. People from the UK and beyond, at all levels of experience, will thereby have the opportunity to retreat within a conducive, supported environment. Right now Land of Joy needs a breakthrough. A fantastic job has been done in fundraising so far but a really big push is required to overcome any remaining obstacles, deliver the next phase of the project and see it realised as quickly as possible. To make that happen, we need to create the positive potential for Land of Joy to actually come into being. What is really needed is 'merit', a spiritual energy that derives from activities performed by practitioners or by sponsored monasteries with ritual specialists. Many more things can and need be done to generate that merit for Land of Joy. At the moment Land of Joy are collecting one million Tara mantras. Rinpoche recommended those wishing to help Land of Joy generate the merit needed for the success of the project to recite 108 of each of two special mantras - and the more people undertake this daily practice for the project the better. You can also dedicate your Lam Rim and shamata meditation practices and retreats to generating the merit for the full realisation of Land of Joy's vision for a permanent retreat centre here in the UK. If sufficient merit is generated, the necessary money, resources and opportunities will manifest.

We will be seeing what more we can all do here at Jamyang, in collaboration with the wider FPMT UK community, to help focus everyone's attention on the huge benefits that can come from the dedication the merit of our practice to the Land of Joy. Take a fresh look at the Land of Joy's prospectus: http://www.landofjoy.co.uk /wp-content/uploads/2012/04/loJ-prospectus-2012.pdf and try keeping the wish for the fulfilment of its vision uppermost in your mind and remembering it regularly in your dedications. We have a great September to end of year Buddhist programme about to start check it out online! Geshe-la will be teaching on Tsongkhapa's final Lam Rim, the one he wrote for meditators. At the end of September, Jangtse Choje Rinpoche will be here, teaching on the Special Insight section of the same text, giving a Green Tara jenang and offering teachings on Vajrayogini for those who have previously had the initiation into the Naro Khacho form of the Vajrayogini and who have a sincere wish to complete the mantra retreat with fire puja. Other visiting teachers include Geshe Graham providing an opportunity to invigorate your debating skills, the Ven. Robina Courtin leading a weekend Tara retreat, the Ven.Amy Miller looking at what Dharma means in everyday life and the Ven. Antonio Satta will be giving a public talk and leading an Insight retreat. All this is in addition to the usual programme of classes and courses, annual Kalachakra, Guhyasamaja and Vajrayogini retreats, and the end of year Nyung Nay retreat. On the community side we have Geshe-la's Community Dharma days, the Autumn Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Courses and practice days, the Dying Well Group meeting, breadmaking days with Ali, Chi Kung, Tai Chi with William and a wide range of Yoga classes. Much look forward to seeing many of you again soon and enjoying the vibrant programme on offer here over the coming months. Roy

The Middle Length Lam Rim was written for meditators. Geshe Tashi, along with his close students, received the transmission last year from His Holiness the Dalai Lama during in South India. The text is very very useful for training in Mahayana motivation and in the key skills of Calm Abiding and Special Insight that give force the remaining four of the Six Perfections (generosity, morality, patience and effort). Do try to make an effort to attend as many sessions as you can. Drop in attendance is also fine, if you are unable to commit regularly. The main thing is to come and get a taste of this great master's work. We are also pleased to report that Roger Wright is now a recognised FPMT teacher at the Foundation level. Roger is a long time supporter of Jamyang and a Trustee of the centre. He shares his time between London and Cornwall so look out for some classes run by him at either location.
Jamyang Walk - 7th September INTERFAITH WALK The Jamyang Walk will combine with an interfaith walk organised by Faiths Together in Lambeth on Saturday, 7th September. The day will start at 10.30 am with walkers meeting at North Brixton Islamic Cultural Centre and then visiting a variety of faith centres, including Jamyang at 12.45. Do join in this rewarding and interesting day. Details from: www.ftil.org.

Jamyang work camp. A Success! WORK CAMP Saturday 17th - Friday 23rd August 2013 Thank you very much for all of the lovely people who came and helped this year during the Work Camp to maintain the main building of Jamyang. I think we all had a great time and the building looks pretty good as well. Work camp is not only about work, but a good opportunity to meet other people and learn from each others. People come from different countries and nations every year. For lots of them this is the very first time to meet Buddhism or a Buddhist Centre and its Community. This year two ladies (Marija Michaud and Olga Banik) came from Slovenia only to help out during the work camp Fantastic commitment. Alex Davidson very kindly offered to oversee the work camp again, after a very successful work camp last year . Ian Collins took overall responsibility for all of the carpenter works with Venerable Honu. They fixed the Café tables, prepared the kitchen, made the leaflet holder and did bits here and there. Gabriella Rondelli and Will helped with the café work by cleaning the café walls and making them ready for Ian to fix the work station for the always busy kitchen team. Irena Stupar, Marija, Olga, Jake Fisher and Gavin Lee painted the library and cleaned the walls throughout the building. Mike Fry used his climbing experience and painted all of the windows up on the roof. Robin Bath helped to clean the basement. Varun Sachdeva did a brilliant job with the paint in the staff bathroom and lots more.

A big thanks for the donation of paints and brushes by Natasha Taylor. The work camp was a great success this year again. Thank you so much for all of these amazing people`s endless generosity and for giving up their free time.
The Sera Je Food Fund The FPMT sent out this request earlier this month. We thought we would give you a chance to participate. For 22 years FPMT has had the incredible opportunity and privilege of offering food to all the monks of Sera Je Monastery in India. The Sera Je Food Fund offers three nutritious meals every day to over 2,500 monks. That is 3,029,500 meals each year, 8,300 every day and over 37,379,600 meals since the fund began. For nearly six centuries Sera Je Monastery has remained one of the most important learning institutions preserving the pure unbroken lineage of Buddha's teachings. By offering to the Sera Je Food Fund, not only are you making offerings to Sangha, who live in pure moralityand the three higher trainings, but you are also contributing directly to the preservation of the Mahayana tradition by providing sustenance to practitioners studying and actualizing the path to enlightenment. Extensive dedications are made by the Sangha of Sera Je Monastery for those who contribute to the fund. The great yogi Milarepa said: "The practitioner and benefactor offering food create the cause to achieve enlightenment together." You can participate by offering: Donate Here *US$10 - provides three vegetarian meals a day to one monk for one month *US$120 - provides three vegetarian meals a day to one monk for one year *US$780 - provides three vegetarian meals a day to all 2,500 monks for one day *US$5,460 - provides three vegetarian meals a day to all 2,500 monks for one week If you would like to offer ongoing support, you can also set up a monthly donation. Our Cafe - a source of nourishment in many ways After a year of incredible hard work, delicious food and wonderful support it is lovely to be able to share the news that the Café is now well re-established as a flourishing part of the Jamyang and local community. Last August the Café was set up as a Community Interest Company, which means that any money it makes over and above its costs can be donated to an affiliated charity - Jamyang. We have just had our accounts done and are pleased to say in the first 8 months the Café was able to gift Jamyang £15,500 and our aim is to continue gifting Jamyang on an annual basis. The café also pays a monthly rent for being hosted in the wonderful Jamyang space . Ali, Ilaria and their amazing band of dedicated volunteers have worked incredibly hard, the café is run on passion, goodwill and dedication. It's been a busy year ! Next year our aim is to continue to support and gently strengthen what we have keeping the great heart and feeling that the team have established. Our cafe serves to give many things to many people - it's a wonderful place for students and the community to relax, where friends meet up, where people can have some space and quiet reflection time or just sit in the sun and take in it's beautiful courtyard garden, or learn how to make mouth watering bread whilst have fun. Ali has also made a real effort to ensure we become not just a great part of our dharma community but also a strong part of the local community. For example the café is now a drop off point for veggie boxes from Sutton Community Farm and we are a regular lunch place for the some of the local residents. Thank you so much for continuing to supporting the café. Your taste buds, the Café and Jamyang thank you from the bottom of our well rounded stomachs.

Death Those who sit in the stye of contentment, meaning Death Those who suffer the ecstasy of the animals, meaning Death Are become unsubstantial, reduced by a wind, A breath of pine, and the woodsong fog By this grace dissolved in place What is this face, less clear and clearer The pulse in the arm, less strong and stronger Given or lent? more distant than stars and nearer than the eye Whispers and small laughter between leaves and hurrying feet Under sleep, where all the waters meet. Bowsprit cracked with ice and paint cracked with heat, I made this, I have forgotten And remember. The rigging weak and the canvas rotten Between one June and another September. Dharma Bites: Vanity Vanity For some reason I was contemplating vanity the other night. The reason is probably that I caught a glimpse of just how much vanity I have myself. So I set about researching what people have said about this and here you will find a collection of quotes on the subject. The truest characters of ignorance are vanity, and pride and arrogance. - Samuel Butler Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us. - Jane Austen We are so vain that we even care for the opinion of those we don't care for. - Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach Vanity keeps persons in favour with themselves who are out of favour with all
