HISTORIC CENTRE Kortrijk, one of the oldest cities in Belgium boasts a rich history. Starting with the Gallo-Roman settlement of Cortoriacum, through the key year of 1302, when Kortrijk was the scene of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, to a more recent time when the flax industry was the beating heart of the city. This rich past is also reflected in its street scene, where you can find some of the highligths that we would like to introduce to you. 1 - HISTORIC CITY HALL The historic City Hall is the eye-catcher of the Grote Markt.The Counts of Flanders adorn the façade. The 16th century Aldermen’s Hall and Council Chamber are definitely worth a visit. > Grote Markt 54

2 - THE BELFRY Kortrijk’s Belfry is the remains of the medieval cloth hall and is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Manten and Kalle, the famous figures that strike the hour, are featured on the east side of the spire. > Grote Markt
3 - GROTE MARKT The atmospheric Grote Markt near City Hall is the city’s beating heart. Surrounded by appealing terraces, it’s the perfect place to take a break. During summer months you will find a children’s sand playground here. On Monday the Grote Markt serves as the backdrop for the weekly market. Fresh, regional products are promoted by the traders that set up their stalls early in the morning. WAR MONUMENT At the foot of the Belfry is the war monument, which dates back from 1923. It is a tribute to the Kortrijk soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. It was created by the city architect Joseph Demeere.
4 - ST. MARTIN’S CHURCH This 12th century church has been rebuilt several times throughout the years. Inside you will find valuable artworks including church garments and silver dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. The church tower was rebuilt after the fire of 1862 and houses a fully-fledged 19th century carillon. Via the neo-Baroque rotunda chapel you enter the devotion chapel, God’s Vault ‘het Kelderke Gods’, an absolute must.
5 - SINT-MAARTENSKERKHOF Today, this former cemetery (until 1807) to the left of the church is a vibrant square offering some outstanding restaurants and bars. It’s the perfect place to spend a cosy summer evening. 6 - JOZEF VANDALEPLEIN This square is situated right beside St. Martin’s Church. Young catering establishments and shops provide some additional colour. During July and August this square and St. Martin’s Church is the venue for convivial summer markets. JOZEF VAN DALE (1716-1781) The priest founded a congregation of brothers in 1761 that was responsible for educating poor boys. He also pioneered the concept of urban poorhouses in 1774.
7 - BEGUINAGE Besides the lively city centre you will find the tranquil Saint Elisabeth Béguinage. The Béguinage was built in 1238 and features on the Unesco List of World Heritage Sites. You stroll past the little houses, the Gothic Saint Matthew Chapel and the charming house of the ‘Grand Dame’. 8 - THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk) The 13th century church was built after a lengthy construction period. The west facade, the nave and the transept remain from this early Gothic collegiate church. Don’t forget to view the Erection of the cross by Anthony Van Dyck in the side aisle of the church.Guido Gezelle, the priest and poet was a chaplain at this church from 1872 to 1889. In the famous Counts’ Chapel you can admire unique portraits of all the successive Counts of Flanders. > Deken Zegerplein ARTILLERY TOWER The Artillery Tower, dating back to the 14th century, is one of the few remains of the medieval city wall. It was once used as a storage depot for gunpowder.

9 - THE BROEL TOWERS & LOWERED LEIE BANKS These remains of the former city ramparts are the symbol of Kortrijk. They were constructed by the Dukes of Burgundy to defend the city. Note the embrasures for arrows and cannons. The corbels around them also have openings through which enemies were attacked. On the Broel Bridge stands Nepomucenus, patron saint of sailors and the drowned. The lowered Leie banks bring the city closer to the water. The attractive terraces with a view of the Broel Towers are a new attraction. > Broelkaai- Verzetskaai

10 - KORTRIJK 1302 & TOURISM The Middle Ages are brought back to life in Museum 1302. Learn all about the Battle of the Golden Spurs and the history of the city. You will also find a tourism counter at the same location. > Begijnhofpark BÉGUINAGE PARK This spacious, open park occupies a central location in the historic centre. It was once the garden of Groeninge Abbey. It is currently used as a venue for outdoor events.
11 - HOUTMARKT The renovated Houtmarkt is a car-free square with a modern, underground car park that can accommodate 170 vehicles. The square is also home to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Kortrijk. 12 - ‘T PLEIN This former 17th-century army training ground is now a modern park where you will find total peace. Striking elements are the wooden grandstands with the central stage, the refreshing fountains and a nice restaurant. 13 - GROENINGE GATE AND THE VIRGIN OF FLANDERS This park occupies the site of the 1302 Battle of the Golden Spurs.Both the gate and the statue were erected to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the Battle of the Golden Spurs.

SHOPPING AND WALKING DISTRICT Shopping in Kortrijk is more than just shopping, it’s also about pleasure. You will be tempted by numerous boutiques, shops and concept stores in and around the city centre. 15 - BAGGAERTSHOF This hidden gem, situated in the middle of the shopping and walking area, was founded by the Baggaert sisters in 1638 for poor widows and unmarried women. BANKS OF THE LEIE 16 - TEXTURE Texture is the successor of the former Flax Museum. It uses a new method for recounting the history of the flax industry in the Kortrijk region. 18- SKATEBOWL Covering no less than 850 m², skateboarders and roller skaters can have a ball in this unique skate bowl. It was constructed by the American Team Pain. > IJzerkaai
19 - KING ALBERT PARK The King Albert Park is the ultimate oasis of peace for cyclists and walkers along the Leie. The Leie monument occupies a central position in the park, where the soldiers who perished in the Battle of the Leie in 1940 are remembered each year. > Burgemeester Vercruysselaan
20 - BRIDGES IN KORTRIJK Over the past twenty years, the banks of the Leie have undergone a true metamorphosis. The Leie has been treated to no fewer than six new bridges that were all designed in a unique and original manner.The College Bridge is the eye-catcher (picture), a cycle and walker’s bridge, which meanders across the Leie. The 7th and last bridge, the Reepbrug, will be completed by 2022.

BUDA-ISLAND 21 - BROEIKAAI It buzzes with creative energy on and around the Buda Island. This is due to the fact that not only the most diverse up-andcoming institutions in the fields of culture, education, welfare and business have found their home here, but numerous inspiring initiatives by students and citizens are to be seen here as well. Broelkaai 6, the gateway to the island, is a showcase of Kortrijk’s creativity. Here you will find a restaurant, a beautifully landscaped indoor garden and an exhibition centre. > Broelkaai 6

23 - BUDA TOWER Today, the old Tack Brewery cooling tower is a space offering several rehearsal studios. The tower was completely modernised but its original silhouette is still visible. > Korte Kapucijnenstraat

25 - BUDA FACTORY The former De Smet-De Jaegere textile factory was converted into a creative location. Buda Factory is called the ‘factory of the future’ where designers, artists, students and entrepreneurs can create together. > Dam 2A
26 - HOSPITAL OF OUR LADY The Hospital of Our Lady is one of the oldest hospitals in the country (1211). As a former guesthouse for vagrants, poor sick people were treated for free. Two Gothic arches on columns of blue stone are all that remain of the original hospital. The convent garden is a haven of peace. (see photograph below) > Budastraat 37

MUSIC AND THEATRE DISTRICT The fact that Kortrijk is known for being the ultimate city of music in West Flanders is no coincidence. The former music site at Conservatoriumplein, which was divided into three separate blocks, was converted in 2017, into a single music centre - Track. This site accommodates Wilde Westen, Vlamo, Kortrijks Conservatorium, Respiro Dell’ Arte, Radio 2 West-Vlaanderen, Quindo, Chemisch Circus, Schouwburg Kortrijk, Muziekcafé Pand. A and VDAB (Flemish Service for Employment and Vocational Training) stage technician course and ATHENA audio production course. The theatre (Schouwburg) is a stone’s throw away. 27 - SCHOUWBURG The Kortrijk Schouwburg’s programme features more than just music. The building is conceived as a theatre à l’ italienne. More than 800 spectators look onto the stage from the ground floor and three balconies through an immense framework. 28 - CONCERTSTUDIO This atmospheric concert hall in music centre Track is a pioneer due to its exceptional acoustics, and offers space for 224 music lovers. > Conservatoriumplein

KORTRIJK WEIDE Kortrijk Weide is the new waterfront district of the city. There’s something here for everyone: a balanced mix of business, sports, education and relaxation. This new district of Kortrijk is an integral part of the city. It is seamlessly connected to the inner city and the train station area by landscaped pathways. Moreover, Kortrijk Weide, which enhances the city centre with a new multifunctional district, is a lively entertainment district where Kortrijk lives up to its reputation as a climate-friendly city. > Nelson Mandelaplein
30 - NELSON MANDELAPLEIN The car park for 310 cars can be transformed into a formidable events square. This square can host concerts for a maximum of 10,000 people. 31 - HANGAR K Most of the former depot of the Belgian State Railways NMBS/ SNCB located at Kortrijk Weide is now occupied by Hangar K. It is a co-creation hub for exponential growth where start-ups, entrepreneurs and local companies from three different sectors cooperate: manufacturing, industry 4.0 and game technology. Together they formulate relevant solutions to the growing demand for innovative applications. 32 - URBAN SPORTS PARK In this space, skaters, bladers and bmx enthusiasts can all enjoy themselves. Within the same space, there is also a freerun park where freerunners can negotiate challenging obstacles. 33 - TRANZIT Tranzit is a meeting place for young people and at the same time an organisation that supports youth associations.
The building consists of a multipurpose hall, rehearsal rooms, a creative room, a dance hall and a recording bus. 34 - DEPART This events venue is an architectural gem that takes over the broad lines of approach from the former warehouse and has dragged it into the 21st century. A lot of attention has been paid to acoustics and functionality. The venue is not only a party hall but is also open to corporate events. 35 - SWIMMING POOL This pool will be the province’s largest leisure and competition pool. Unique is the ‘all weather’ outdoor pool that is open all year round. Eye-catchers are the spectacular slides and the exciting white-water rapids. 36 - URBAN ECOLOGY PARK The urban ecology park with open fire is an oasis of peace. On a bench along the Leie, you can enjoy this new patch of nature in the city. A Finnish trail and water features make the park the ideal place to relax.

OUTSIDE THE CENTRE 37 - ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH/ BROTHER ISIDORE This stunning painted 19th century church is famous for its beautified Brother Isidore. It is a popular pilgrimage site. The adjacent Lourdes Cave is a haven of peace. > Wandelingstraat 33

39 - KORTRIJK XPO ’Kortrijk Xpo’ is one of the largest exhibition centres in Belgium, covering some 55,000 m². This is where exhibitions such as Velofollies, Matexpo and Interieur take place. > Doorniksesteenweg 216

CHILD-FRIENDLY CITY Since 2016, Kortrijk has been able to call itself a ‘child-friendly’ city. This makes Kortrijk an ideal destination for families with children. GIDSENPLUS and BOAT RENTAL DE KEPER have once again decided to join forces this year. Between 15 June and the end of September we sail on Sundays and public holidays. We leave at 10.30 am at the back of the southern Broel Tower and sail with the ‘Kalle’ all the way upstream to Bissegem. Easter Fun Fair 2020
The Easter Fun Fair, ‘Paasfoor’ offers something for everyone. Here you will find large and small merry-go-rounds as well as traditional food and confectionery stalls. The famous rides for daredevils, on which you are hurled around at a speed of 100 km/h at a height of 50 metres, are fixed attractions for family pleasure; but the Ghost Train, the Polyp, the Slide and the Wild Roller Coaster will also be there again.

During this very special city festival in Kortrijk, the city goes wild again for three days. Everywhere there are events, performances, celebrations etc.. Make sure you visit the largest flea market in Flanders during the Whitsun bank holiday.

One of the most important sights in Kortrijk is the historical City Hall. During the summer months it opens its doors to visitors. It is definitely worthwhile a visit and it will certainly give your visit to Kortrijk that extra touch. We also recommend you visit the lowered banks of the river Leie, where the Broel Towers can be visited at weekends.

Car-free Sunday has become a very popular event in Kortrijk. All kinds of activities and festivities literally conquer the streets. This year’s car-free Sunday takes place on 20 September. Don’t miss it!
Winter in Kortrijk 2020
The end of the year is the time for conviviality. An ice rink on the Grote Markt (‘Market Square’), a Christmas Market, a Christmas Fun Fair ... Various winter bars and terraces also create a magical Christmas atmosphere. Of course Kortrijk is also the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping.
PARKING IN THE CITY Underground parking is not expensive and the first hour is free. In addition, the parking guidance system shows you the shortest route to any available parking spaces. Park & Ride Xpo Hand in your parking ticket to the bus driver and receive free parking and a return ticket to the town centre. Park & Bike Wembley Here you can also use public transport. A bus stop of the bus company De Lijn is situated nearby. The ride to and from the station is free of charge. You don’t have to buy a ticket and a bicycle storage facility is there as well. KORTRIJK CYCLES Kortrijk is the ideal city for cyclists. Here you will find bicycle rentals, bicycle repair shops, bicycle sheds, bicycle sharing points and so much more. Bicycle rental: www.mobiel.be | deelfietsen: www.mobit.be Cycling zone
The entire inner city together with the existing pedestrian zone and the residential areas are one large cycling zone with no less than 74 inter-connected streets where cyclists have priority. Cars are allowed in the cycling zone, but they are not allowed to overtake the cyclists and are restricted to a maximum speed limit of 30 km per hour.
Cyclists are allowed to use the entire width of the road (in a oneway street) or the whole lane (in a two-way street).

A CLEAN CITY We are proud of our city and do everything we can to keep it clean. That’s why we are very strict with people who just drop their litter in the streets. The same applies to people who drop their cigarette ends on the ground. If you are caught, you risk a fine of up to € 55. There are special ‘DropPit’ ashtray tiles (the so-called ‘peukentegels’) set into the pavements as well as ashtrays installed around the city. Anyone who wants a free pocket ashtray can obtain one at the reception desk of the town hall or call the information hotline ‘1777’ free of charge.
