Welcome from the MCR President A warm welcome to all our new members! And to those returning for another year, I hope you have had an enjoyable summer. Whether you are a returning student or arriving in Durham for the first time I hope this will be the start of a fantastic year for you as a member of Hatfield MCR. Durham is a wonderful place to live and study, and being a member of Hatfield plays a big part in shaping that experience irrespective of whether you live in college or in and around Durham. The Middle Common Room (MCR) is the postgraduate student body of our college. It is a diverse community, with both Masters and PhD students from all over the world and studying a wide range of disciplines. We also have part-time and distance learners in our ranks. The MCR Executive Committee (‘Exec’ for short) seeks to offer activities for all members of this group of young researchers. The Exec is composed of annually elected volunteers from within our community. The President, Treasurer and Chair were elected in June, while elections for the other positions will be held this October. New students are particularly encouraged to be part of this enthusiastic committee! Activities range from formal dinners to research symposia, and include a wide range of social events. Through all of these, we hope to provide a forum for mutual inspiration, motivation, networking and friendship. The MCR takes its place in College life between the Junior Common Room (JCR) and the Senior Common Room (SCR). The JCR consists of all undergraduate students, many of whom live in college accommodation. Although undergraduate students run most College societies, such as sport, music and theatre, their activities are open to MCR members as well. The SCR is a group of established professionals and academics who are often voluntary college mentors as well. They are an interesting group of people, willing to share their experiences in life over a formal dinner or on other occasions. The programme of social events over the induction period will give you a flavour of what is to come during the next year. From the notorious traditional college formal dinners along with more informal gatherings, to academic symposiums and trips around the north-east, there will be many opportunities to meet and get to know all the other members of the MCR. 1
I wish you a successful year as a member of Hatfield College. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch, and I look forward to meeting you all as the year progresses. Abigail Steed Hatfield MCR President (hatfield.mcrpresident@durham.ac.uk)
__________ Important: 1. Have you sent back to the College all the documents that have been requested? They were sent to you in an email headed ‘Hatfield College Welcome’. In particular, if you want to be able to come to the MCR Welcome dinner on Friday 30th September you must have sent back the reply slip by the deadline: No reply by the due date … No dinner! 2. Please make every effort to collect your campus card / have your identity verified on Friday 30 September at 9.00 9.00am .00am in the College Dining Hall. It will be very difficult to give you your campus card at other times. 3. Please also note that if you are an international student and wish to have your visa verified before you collect your campus card (you collect your campus card on Friday 30 September at 9.00am) you may do so, as long as you take with you your student number. Your student number has 9 digits and begins 000.

MCR Representatives Our MCR Representatives, or MCR Reps for short, will guide you through our Induction Fortnight. As seasoned members of the MCR, they are open to questions and are happy to help you find your way around Durham. You can recognise them in their blue Hatfield shirts. Abigail Steed (President) Hi, I’m Abi. I’m this year’s President of Hatfield MCR, so if you have any questions or concerns I’ll hopefully be able to help. I’m just starting the second year of my PhD in Medieval History, and when I’ve not got my head stuck in some obscure book I like to cook, eat, watch films, go running, and explore new places, particularly if there are old ruins to look at. Looking forward to meeting you all!
Christina Mitoula I am a part time Msc in Criminology and Criminal Justice and I hope you will find Durham the same exciting and fantastic place to study. I studied my LLB in Italy and I would be more than willing to help new students since I have a very personal experience of being in a foreign country and unfamiliar environment. I speak fluently Italian, basic Spanish and almost basic Arabic. I love sports like martial arts (Karate Shotokan, fencing).
Andrew Robertson Hello everyone! I’m Andrew, and as well as being a former President of Hatfield’s MCR, I enjoy playing hockey, squash, tennis and cricket. I’m also starting my third year of a PhD in Astrophysics, but people tend to stop listening if I say that first… I’m really looking forward to meeting you all, so come say hi!
John Lawson I am starting my fourth year of a PhD in maths. When not in the office I enjoy climbing, play underwater hockey and love floating around underwater scuba diving.
3
Ruaridh Ellison I am from The Artists’ Town, Kirkcudbright (another Church to Saint Cuthbert but in Dumfries and Galloway as part of his deceased wanderings) and I have been enjoying archaeology at Durham University since 2010. Besides geophysics and biomolecular archaeology, my interests include art, bridge and music. The famous Hat-field College, in the Durham City Conservation area, gives fresh opportunities and shows the diverse Hatfield Spirit.
Linyue Huang Hello everyone. My name is Linyue Huang. You can also call me Jessica. I am studying for a PhD in Translation Studies. I am a quiet Beijing girl who loves reading, travelling, and listening to music. I am really glad to be a Frep because when I was new here, I got a lot of help from the lovely and warm-hearted Freps, and I would like to become one of them and do as much as I can to offer help.
Andrés Olivares del Campo (JBH Warden) Hi everyone! I am Andrés! I am a Spanish second year PhD in theoretical physics. I work on particle physics, specifically, trying to understand some tiny particles called neutrinos. I also love to practice sports and I am part of the Judo and Boxing clubs. This year I am also the warden of James Barber House so, if you live there, I will try my best to make sure you have a great year! Welcome to Durham!
Stefan Arridge Hi, I'm Stefan and I'm in the second year of a PhD in Astrophysics. I also play American football for the University team and occasionally do stand-up comedy at various student-run gigs around Durham. Otherwise, you may find me in one of the many fine pubs this city has to offer. If any of this interests you, or you just want to have a chat, then feel free to get in touch.
4
Akash Jain Hey, I am about to start third year of my PhD in high energy physics (string theory). When I am not scribbling horrendous equations on my notebook or typing all sort of strange symbols on LaTeX, I spend my time with programming, graphic and web designing. I also like travelling, chess, cycling and getting involved in administrative and outreach activities. I held the position of MCR IT Officer last year; it was fun working with the team and getting the opportunity to design the MCR website. I can assure you will love your time in Hatfield College.
Gilly Burn I am one of our young at heart but older-in-body students! I am doing an MA in Theology, Spirituality and Health. I started 2 years ago intending to be full time student but love the experience of being a student at Hatfield so much, I am taking the MA over 3 years Part-time! I was a nurse, have set up a cancer charity in India where I travel every year and by the time I meets you, I will just have returned from Peru where I was presenting at a conference. Welcome to the wonderful city of Durham! Enjoy!
Julia Raszewska Hi All! I’m Julia and I have just finished an MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies. It’s been an exciting year in Durham and Hatfield College. In fact I had so much fun organizing events and enjoying the city that I decided to stay on and get more involved in college life as the Sabbatical Development Officer. Apart from organizing events and watching drama I enjoy horse riding, travelling and cooking. Come and say hello if you share any of my interests or just want to know where to go for a nice coffee!

Research Symposia are much treasured events at Hatfield College as they combine the academic and social dimensions of College life. Undergraduates are often invited to attend such events, promoting a greater sense of camaraderie among the three Common Rooms of our College. Complimentary wine and light refreshments will be offered.

Map Walking from Hatfield College to James Barber House only takes about five minutes following the indicated pedestrian route. Leaving College through the main gate, turn left and take the first road left, this is Bow Lane. (Alternatively, you can leave the College site through a door on Bow Lane.) Kingsgate Bridge brings you across the River Wear and then turn right to follow Church Street southward. Turn right after the houses forming Anchorage Terrace (beyond the zebra crossing) to reach the main entrance to James Barber House. (Alternatively, you may pass over the graveyard of St. Oswald’s Church to enter through the backdoor by entering the code on the digital lock.)
