A WARM WELCOME TO DURHAM UNIVERSITY Congratulations on securing an offer from Durham University. You may now be facing a difficult decision about which offer to accept as your firm choice. I hope it will be your offer from Durham University, and that you can visit us if you are able, to help make that decision. Our Post-offer Visit Days offer a range of interactive activities to provide a memorable flavour of academic and social student life. We want you to have an experience of life as a Durham University student and to get to know the University in all its diversity. Your college will extend a warm welcome and offer a range of opportunities to explore the social and support sides of student life. Academic departments will run a programme of engaging activities designed to deepen your understanding of your course. The majority of college activities will be led by our current students, who are also involved in departmental activities and can answer questions on their personal experience of life at the University. Alongside college and departmental activities, Post-offer Visit Days will also provide opportunities for you to visit professional support services and facilities such as the Sports Centre, Students’ Union and Library. If there is a particular service you would like to visit, which is not listed in this guide, please contact the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office. If you have any general queries please contact the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office: T 0191 334 9191 or E student.recruitment@durham.ac.uk On behalf of the University, all the staff in departments and colleges, the Students’ Union and professional support services, may I wish you a very successful and enjoyable visit to Durham University.

Did you know? More than 75% of our students take part in sport on a regular basis. Durham’s philosophy is to provide opportunities in sport to enable exceptional people to do exceptional things.

Durham is proud to be home to one of the strongest student theatre scenes in the UK. With 27 different theatre companies putting on around 70 productions every year, there’s truly something for everyone. Music in Durham

Our student theatre is completely student-led, meaning that you can get involved not only with performing, but with directing, producing, lighting design, costuming, running the box office or any other aspect of theatre. We aim to support students who love performing arts to be able to take full advantage of all the opportunities university offers, whether it’s reviewing shows for the student newspaper, taking a play to the Edinburgh Fringe or trying out their talents at stand-up comedy. There are also opportunities for those who want to write to see their work performed in our annual Durham Drama Festival. The Assembly Rooms Theatre will be open from 9.00am-5.00pm on Tuesday 22nd March and Wednesday 23rd March. We’ll be doing informal tours throughout the day and lots of current students will be around who will be very happy to talk to you about anything and everything drama related. Location: Assembly Rooms Theatre (on the Bailey, directly opposite the entrance to Hatfield College). Map ref 46.

Music in Durham is thriving and music can be found everywhere – from the Music Department to University-level ensembles and music in colleges, we have around 100 groups to be part of. 95% of our ensembles are student-run, allowing a large number of undergraduates and postgraduates to get involved in a leadership position within these societies. These cover a wide breadth of ability standards, with both competitively auditioned and open groups across the list of ensembles. There are 26 university-level ensembles, comprising of large orchestras and choirs, to smaller groups, in addition to world music societies such as Gamelan, African singing and drumming and Korean drumming. There is also a contemporary music ensemble allowing opportunities for performance in many varied areas. Durham’s strong choral tradition is exemplified by 8 chapel choirs who together lead approximately 150 services per year. 6 of these groups allow students to learn the skills of music directorship and conducting, with the additional 2 being run by professional directors who can impart cathedra-level training. Moreover, our university’s collegiate system gives musicians further possibilities for performance. From orchestras to big bands, choirs to flute choirs, jazz bands to rock bands, there is something to cater for everyone’s taste. All of this is in addition to any ensembles that you may want to start yourself. The Assembly Rooms Theatre will be open from 9.00am-5.00pm on Tuesday 22nd March and Wednesday 23rd March, where you can find more information about Experience Durham: Music. Map ref 46.

Experience Durham: Drama, Music and Volunteering Many hundreds of our current students take part in extra-curricular activity either as part of their college community, via the Students’ Union or through Experience Durham. To find out more about Music, Drama and Volunteering opportunities offered by Experience Durham drop in to the Assembly Rooms between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Tuesday or Wednesday. You can also book a session in Drama and/or Music on the booking system: Venue: The Assembly Rooms; Map ref 46. Times: 10.30am – 11.30am Drama 11.30am – 12.30pm Music 12.30pm – 1.30pm Drama

HOPE GRANT “Having studied for a BA Criminology I thoroughly enjoyed engaging with academics at the forefront of their field. Modules such as Crime, Power and Social Inequalities and Drugs, Crime and Society and Issues in Criminal Justice were of a particular interest for me, largely due to the attention paid to the causes that were exposed and linked to certain offending behaviours. Many of the readings provided by the lecturers at Durham enriched my academic life further and I took great pleasure in engaging in critical academic debates during seminars.” GRADUATED 2014

JENNIFER

ALICIA

“I major in History and Spanish, although I have also taken modules in Philosophy, Sociology, and Business, and I’m writing my dissertation on the representation of the politics of aid in the Ethiopian famine of 1984-85. I spent my third year in Spain, working in Madrid and Barcelona, and I have completed several internships with major companies, in the UK and Hong Kong, in preparation for my future career in management consulting. Every person is unique, and so is the programme of study undertaken by each and every student who is taking this programme. The wide range of my interests is reflected in my programme of study, which shows everyone else, including employers, what makes me different, and how I stand out from the crowd.”

“I’m studying English Literature, Music, and Philosophy, and I’m writing a dissertation in which I explore how the postmodern fragmentation of language contributes to the representation of women’s identity, sexuality, and social status in feminist fiction of the 1980s. The programme is highly flexible, and offers both breadth and depth, in that it enables students to follow their interests across subject areas while providing the opportunity for greater specialisation within each subject. My programme of study reflects who I am, as an individual, and challenges me to think critically beyond traditional boundaries. Through the programme, I have acquired the knowledge and skills which have laid the foundation for my postgraduate studies, in modern and contemporary literature, and for a future career in education or arts management.”
