in training barns, primarily located in the Southeast part of the U.S., actually "sore" objects jammed into their tender flesh, among other gruesome techniques. Soring makes it painful for the horses to step down and forces them to perform an artificial, high-stepping gait known as the "Big Lick" that is rewarded at some horse shows.

A recently released video taken by an undercover investigator with The Humane

Society of the United States exposed numerous instances of illegal horse soring at one of the top Big Lick training barns in Tennessee. This is the second time in four years that The HSUS has documented trainers and grooms inflicting pain on Tennessee walking horses' legs and hooves to create an exaggerated and unnatural gait.

Although Congress tried to stop soring more than four decades ago with the

Horse Protection Act, the abuse is still widespread in the small Big Lick segment of the industry. Those who stand to profit from this illegal activity go to great lengths to cover their tracks and pressure their legislators to defend the status quo.

There's only one bill in Congress that will crack down on the crime of soring –

the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 3268/S. 1121. Only the PAST Act will do what's needed to strengthen the Horse Protection Act: eliminate a failed system of industry self-policing, ban the use of devices that are integral to the practice of soring Tennessee walking horses and related breeds, strengthen penalties and make other necessary reforms to restore the integrity of the walking horse industry. This bipartisan bill won’t impose a burden on taxpayers, it will simply enable the USDA to redirect its enforcement efforts and resources in a more efficient and effective way.

It's time to pass the PAST Act because no horse should be subjected to such misery

for a blue ribbon.

New Jersey’s two U.S. Senators are co-sponsors of the PAST Act, as are many

members of New Jersey’s delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives. Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative and to your two U.S. Senators to put an end to soring. You can say: "I'm a constituent, and I urge you to co-sponsor

R AI N E FOU N DATION

Delivers Gifts to Over 400 Families PHOTOS PETER DANT PHOTOGRAPHY

It is difficult for families to afford children's Christmas gifts when they are struggling with unemployment, medical issues, or the lingering damage from Superstorm Sandy. But for many needy families in the Bayshore, this year's Christmas was a little bit better, thanks to the RAINE Foundation and a legion of anonymous toy drive donors. "The need does not go away; it just gets bigger. But so does our volunteer base, and our commitment to make the holidays better for all of our local kids," said RAINE Foundation co-founder Patti Dickens. Working out of the Holy Family School gym in December, RAINE volunteers organized gifts donated by individuals who "adopted" a child's wish, or from toy drives at local schools, municipal buildings and businesses. The wishes and gifts were matched up and then wrapped in holiday paper for special delivery by Santa on December 17, 2015. Much of the work, including bike assembly, was done by the organization's youth, called "Drops of RAINE". Accompanied by local fire police and fire departments, Santa made rounds in Matawan, Aberdeen, Old Bridge, Hazlet, Keyport, Union Beach, Atlantic Highlands, Middletown, Belford, Holmdel, Keansburg and more throughout the night. A total of 330 families, 75 from DYFS, 600 children from Project Paul, 600 gifts to St. Anthony of Lakewood, and finally 150 gifts to the Puerto Rican Society were all dispersed to make the holidays a little brighter. "Thank you, RAINE Foundation, for giving my little girl a Christmas!" wrote one mom on the organization's Facebook page. "Without you guys, she wouldn't have had one." The RAINE Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. You can like them on Facebook - Raine Foundation OR visit their website at RAINEFoundation.com.

Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights I am not implying that Inkanto is like an eating establishment you might find in a Peruvian village.

The Food Spy seeks and finds hidden, and perhaps not so hidden epicurean gems in and around Monmouth County promoting the notion that good wine, good food in good company is one of life’s simplest and civilized pleasures. Sharing these gems, is the mission of the Food Spy. The Food Spy is an active contributor for both Zagat and TripAdvisor and accepts input, ideas and gem suggestions from Community Magazine readers and can be secretly contacted at foodspynj@ gmail.com.

10

BUT IF YOU STEP INTO INKANTO, you will step into a restaurant serving home spun recipes influenced by the Asian and Italian migrants who helped shape Peruvian cuisine. As such, the restaurant is an exemplar of true fusion cuisine, blending the cultural influences of the Italians and Asians.

Peru is a country that has held a variety of ethnic mixes since times ranging from the Inca Empire; it also is home to a climatic variety of 28 individual climates. The mixing of cultures and the variety of climates differ from city to city. So geography, climate, culture and ethnic mix determine the variety of local cuisine, which is vast. But Peru has the second largest population of Japanese people in Latin America after Brazil and the largest population of Chinese people in Latin America. In Chanchamayo, there is an Italian colony in the Province of La Merced, founded by Italian immigrants. It is these two cultures that the owner/chef has chosen to fuse into Peruvian staples. Inkanto is a spacious, simply decorated restaurant occupying the premises of the former Spirits Wine & Liquor store across from the new ShopRite in Hazlet. The charm is provided by the owner/chef. She has hired a wait staff of college age and college-bound individuals upon whom she has imparted the disciplines of friendly, courteous service. There are three large screen TV’s providing entertainment (I think distraction), which seems to be an attraction in eating establishments of all types at this time. This is a BYOB restaurant, but there is also a bar service area that is unique to Inkanto. The restaurant provides fresh ingredients for margaritas and sangria. The customer provides the tequila or wine. Of course, you can simply bring your favorite wine to complement the wonderful menu. We were there for lunch in the middle of the week and so enjoyed this twenty-table restaurant by ourselves. On weekends, although you don’t need a reservation, you will find the place to be more crowded. If you want, there is a private party room that will comfortably hold 16 to 20 people. The windows provide a

bright atmosphere, permitting the sun’s rays to permeate the premises. But it is not as bright as the wait staff, whose sole purpose it seems is to impart knowledge of the cuisine and to insure that the customer has a unique, pleasurable experience. You are presented with two sauces and a signature fried corn kernel mix. If you want bread, you must ask for it. True to Peruvian culture, the restaurant does not serve bread with the meal. Since it was lunch, we shared Ceviche de Mariscos, which we ordered medium spicy. It was served just as we ordered. But since we could not determine exactly what mild, medium and very spicy meant on the heat index, the wait person brought Rocoto pepper sauce on the side in case we wanted it to be a bit spicier. At $18, some might consider it pricey. There were three Prince Edward mussels, shrimp and fresh fish delicately seasoned with citrus, cilantro and red onion. I asked the wait person to choose my entrée. As one might predict, she favored the most expensive item ($22) on the menu. But I was not disappointed in the Bouillabaisse of a variety of seafood items served with seasoned white rice. It had a hint of cilantro and the broth was superb. My lunch guest had Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos priced at $19, which is seafood fried rice Peruvian style. The serving was plentiful. Neither of us finished our entrée and brought half of it home. Lest you think that Inkanto will be a drain on your pocketbook, let me tell you that you will be exceedingly happy with their whole chicken served with French fries and salad for $18. We did not have dessert, but can’t wait until we return and plan to leave room for at least one item from their tempting dessert menu. So, Haykuykuy! Allin mikuna! Come in! Have a nice meal! Inkanto is located at 3115 Route 35 North in Hazlet, NJ 07730. Visit http://www.inkanto-nj.com for more information.

Until next month - live well, eat well, The Food Spy

Annual Breakfast with Santa HOSTED BY HAZLET RECREATION

ON THE MORNING OF December 5, 2015, the holiday magic started even before the children and their parents entered the James J. Cullen Center in Hazlet. Outside of the entrance stood a life-sized Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer character who posed for pictures with the little ones. Once inside, a flurry of activity awaited everyone. About 150 adults and children attended the free annual two-hour “Breakfast with Santa” event, which was hosted by the Hazlet Recreation Advisory Council and Hazlet Recreation.

The children who visited with Santa received small presents while parents took pictures of the special moment. Six-year-old triplets

12

Connor, Brendan, and Aidan were ecstatic to sit with Santa and tell him what was on their lists. On the tables were holiday-themed pictures for the children to color. There was even a large screen on the wall showing Frosty the Snowman and Charlie Brown Christmas, which played continuously throughout the event. Everyone was welcomed to enjoy the buffet-style menu of bagels with cream cheese or butter, mini muffins, and munchkins. Orange juice, juice boxes, milk and water satisfied the children and parents savored the coffee and tea. Assisting Santa and the children throughout the morning were several students from Raritan High School and Hazlet Middle

School; as well as some students from Perna Dance Center, who wore festive holiday dance costumes. Recreation Director Kathy Viscardi said of the event, “It was very successful and I received a lot of positive feedback. The kids were well-behaved and respectful and grinning from ear to ear. It truly was a great kick-off to the Christmas season for Hazlet residents.” Hazlet Recreation was grateful for the food donations given by Old Time Bagels, Dunkin’ Donuts, ShopRite, Gems House of Bagels, and Brooklyn Bagels & Gourmet Deli, all from Hazlet.

KEYPORT AMERICAN LEGION HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL

Breakfast with Santa FOR NEEDY CHILDREN THE AMERICAN LEGION is the largest Veterans organization providing support for Veterans and their families, but what some of you might not know is that they have other missions; one of them being involvement and giving back to the community.

On December 19, 2015, Post #23, the oldest Post in Monmouth County, provided over 100 youngsters, including children in the Shelter Program and Manna House, with wrapped toys which were donated by Post 23 and Marines Toys for Tots. The gift wrapping and decorating was all done by Post members along with their spouses and family members, Boy Scout Troop #364 and

18

Troop Leader MaryAnn DeVarti, and Unit 23 Auxiliary members. If not for the generous donations from the Post and Marines Toys for Tots, these children would not have had any presents to open on Christmas Day. Hosting this event takes a lot of coordination and work, but Post 23 rolled up its sleeves and rose to the challenge once again like in previous years. Volunteers from the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry (KMFP) and Auxiliary Members were on hand to assist in the distribution of goodies to the children as they came in to enjoy the festivities. As everyone eagerly waited for Santa’s arrival, a

delicious pancake breakfast, cooked by Post members, was served to the children and parents. Finally, the moment that everyone had been waiting for – Santa’s arrival. Yes, it was a lot of work but everyone involved with this event agreed that their hard work paid off by seeing the children’s smiling faces, knowing that they were able to give back to the community and be able to make Christmas a little brighter for these children and their families. The Post hopes to do it again next year. Please visit the Post website at www.ALPost23.org for information and future events.

A NEW CHAPTER F OR M ATAWA N A BE R DE E N P U BL IC L I BR A RY THE MATAWAN ABERDEEN PUBLIC LIBRARY cordially invites you to visit its newly renovated space. With new flooring, additional seating, fresh paint, and a more open floor plan, the library now feels bigger and cozier at the same time. The Reference area has updated furniture, a better flow, and a new, sunny seating area that takes advantage of the beautiful bay window. Increased seating and cheerful carpet make the main floor more functional and inviting. Some of the most dramatic changes can be seen in the Children’s room where a clunky cubicle was removed to make room for fun new features like a train table, a puppet theater and a large play area. There is a generous seating area nearby, much to the relief of tired parents. The only spot that remains the same is the basement, which was fully renovated in 2013. While a few projects remain, the bulk of the work is now complete. Over 40 staff members, Board members and volunteers came together to assist with the renovation process. Their hard work and dedication helped to keep the project on time and on budget. Library Director Kimberly Paone said, “It is our goal to make the library a community gathering place. I think these renovations have gone a long way towards transforming the library into a contemporary, casual spot for people to meet their friends and take advantage of all of the great resources we have to offer.” Funding for this project came in part from the library’s capital projects budget, which is dedicated to these types of improvements. In addition, The Friends of the Library made a substantial donation that paid for painting of the library. The library is located at 165 Main Street in Matawan.

The lighting took place in the front of the James J. Cullen Center on the Union Avenue side. Hazlet Township Committee members Barbara Ronchetti and Jim DiNardo as well as members of the Hazlet Recreation Council attended the event. Holiday music filled the air while everyone enjoyed cookies, a holiday sheet cake and cocoa. Hazlet Recreation handed out little presents to the children. Hazlet Recreation Director Kathy Viscardi said, “I feel it is important to have events like this one and Breakfast with Santa that bring the community together. Although there are so many bad things being covered in the news, these two events are able to bring magic to the kids. It was a perfect day that ended with the Raritan football team becoming State Champs! Hazlet is a great place to raise a family.”

while celebrating the tenth anniversary of the transformational gift Emily and her late husband Kevork made to Meridian to name K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. The Hovnanians’ historic gift continues to have a profound impact on the community, ensuring access to advanced pediatric clinical care services for the youngest patients. “I will never forget the day Kevork came home, beaming with happiness, to tell me he wanted to name the children’s hospital,” explained event honoree, Emily Hovnanian. “I know that if he were here to join me at the Gala, he’d be so humbled by this incredible honor and overjoyed to see what an amazing place K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital has become.”

The event was co-chaired by the Hovnanian’s children and spouses, James and Esto Barry, Ara and Rachel Hovnanian, Mazin and Lucy Kalian, Dr. Tavit and Sossie Najarian, and Dr. Roberto and Nadia Rodriguez.
