Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights PORCINI IS LOCATED ACROSS FROM THE FIREHOUSE BECAUSE IT’S HOT! Porcini has been open for a little over seven months and is a BYOB bistro situated in a small brick storefront across from the Volunteer Firehouse on Bay Street in Highlands. It is a 44 seat restaurant that is tight, but not uncomfortable, with the wait staff moving from table to table without much effort. We are not sure how the name was chosen, but it certainly is appropriate. Italian folklore holds that porcini mushrooms sprout up at the time of the new moon, and it is said that a New Moon is the best time of the lunar cycle to begin all things “new.” It is owned by newly engaged Chris Atamian and Alexandria Mahon, who are not yet thirty years old. Chris, who recently served short stints at Nicholas of Red Bank and Fresh, is in charge of the kitchen; Alexandria manages the dining room with expert customer service skills. We wanted to treat a widow from our Church to dinner and were looking for an early reservation, specifically because we wanted to support the efforts and entrepreneurship of these young people. No tables were open until late at night, but they were able to squeeze us in at 6:45 p.m. on a Saturday night. Candlelit, bare wood tables sit on a wood floor, making for a neat and clean presentation. The room is painted in warm colors with subdued lighting, providing a warm, homey feeling. Alexandria greeted us and helped us settle in at a table she set for three. She definitely has firm control over the front and has trained her staff to fill in wherever and whenever necessary, resulting in excellent service. She manages turnover so that we never felt rushed, even though she had to make accommodation to meet our seating request. Although Alexandria went through a short list of appetizer specials, we decided to order from the menu. We were pleased to find out that Chris uses locally sourced ingredients and seafood. There were many interesting appetizers to choose from. We shared Littleneck Clams ($15) in a delicate white wine broth with a hint of garlic and bits of chorizo providing a little kick; Crab Cake ($15) with tangy Asian slaw spiced with a chili-garlic aioli; Beet Salad ($10) over mixed greens with goat cheese accented by candied hazlenuts and dried apricots in a sherry vinaigrette. The clams were fresh and tasty bathed in the broth while the crab cake, although not chunky was all crab and little filler. The beets atop the crisp and fresh greens were thinly sliced and the sweetness of the hazlenuts played nicely with the tang of the cheese. For entrées, we selected the NY strip steak ($33) and Duck ($30) from the specials. I asked Alexandria to serve what Chris was most proud of. She served me the Pork Osso Buco ($29) with sweet potato hash and garlic broccoli rabe in a maple whisky sauce. The pork was succulent and the blend of flavors excited the palate. The steak was cooked just as requested and was covered with what seemed to be charred eggplant; a different presentation and scrumptious experience. The duck was served room temperature and presented both sliced and on the bone over sweet potatoes. Tender and wonderfully seasoned, it competed with the marvelous Osso Buco. Dessert presented an impossible decision point. All of the selections which are $9 (except for the Gelato, which is less) cry out “choose me.” We chose the Chocolate Hazelnut Macaroon, which was soft and chewy with caramel in the center sprinkled with berries and drizzled with chocolate sauce. But they all sounded so good, we also had the Brown Butter Apple Pie with Cinnamon Gelato. This dessert was superb and the Gelato was as good, if not better than in Italy. But we voted the Macaroon the better between the two of them and decided that every time we come, we will order a different dessert. The restaurant also has a three-course Pre-Fixe Menu ($35) every Tuesday through Thursday. Over the archway between the dining room and the kitchen is a sign that says, “Kiss the Cook.” Alexandria, which in Greek means “defender of men,” doesn’t have to defend her man. In fact, she says she will let anyone give Chris a kiss! One thing is for sure, if Alexandria and Chris work as hard at their impending marriage as they do at making Porcini an inviting venue for a delightful epicurean evening, they will be married a long, long time. Porcini is located at 168 Bay Avenue in Highlands, New Jersey. For more information, call 732.291.3080 or visit www. RestaurantPorcini.com.

Historic Bayshore Borough Prepares for 2 nd Annual
ANTIQUES & ARTISAN FESTIVAL
A nt iques | Loca l A r t | L ive Ent er t a i n ment
Keyport gets crafty; prepares to celebrate local arts, artisans and antiques with Springtime jubilee Celebrate the work and wares of the Bayshore area’s finest antique dealers, artists and artisans at the 2nd Annual Keyport Antiques and Artisan Festival. The celebration, held by the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative (KBBC), takes place in the borough’s historic downtown district on West Front Street and Waterfront Park on Saturday, May 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Festival-goers can look forward to a day full of great food, fine art, handmade crafts and timeless antiques—all to the backdrop of the beautiful Raritan Bayshore waterfront. The arts, crafts and antiques of local artists, artisans and dealers will be showcased alongside those of crafters and traders from surrounding areas. “We have a lively art and antique scene here in Keyport,” said Stuart Z Koperweis, Executive Director of the KBBC. “Their talents give our community a unique character, and we loved the idea of highlighting their work with those of artists and dealers from around the area.” A lineup of live musical performances and poetry readings will keep crowds entertained while perusing through the variety of fine art, handmade merchandise and vintage goods displayed throughout Waterfront Park and a closed West Front Street. Visitors can also enjoy antique appraisals and the return of Art Around the Bay, a free event where guests can reserve a canvas from the Arts Society of Keyport, bring their own supplies and paint along the waterfront. A free trolley service will run between the Aberdeen-Matawan train station and Downtown Keyport from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additional parking is available at the train station and is free on weekends. The Arts Society of Keyport will hold its annual Silent Auction Fundraiser at the festival. Visitors are invited to browse and bid on locally created pieces following this year’s theme of “Return of the Butterflies”. Proceeds support the Arts Society of Keyport’s mission to promote the arts of Keyport and the surrounding areas. “There’s been a recent revival of interest in all things vintage,” remarked Charlie Merla, President of the KBBC. “The enthusiasm has been tremendous for our antique and consignment community. We’re very excited to invite art lovers and antique aficionados alike to celebrate with us in May.” For more information about the KBBC, visit www.visitkeyport.org/ and follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/KeyportHappenings and on Twitter @Keyport_NJ.

GRAVELLY BROOK PARK RESTORATION APPROVED Gravelly Brook Park, long neglected and allowed to fall into disrepair, will be upgraded and repaired thanks to an unanimous vote of the Matawan Council at the February 16, 2016 meeting. The improvements will be funded in part with a $250,000 County Municipal Open Space Grant. The plan includes the demolition of a deteriorating 2200 square foot building on the property, the construction of a new baseball field and a new soccer field, which will overlap with the outfield of the baseball field. The total costs will be $528,000, almost half of which will be covered by the grant. Mayor Joe Altomonte commented, “This is good first step in our goal to restore Matawan.” Altomonte took office in January 2016. One of the major issues in the campaign was his promise to repair neglected parks and renovate the Main Street corridor. Altomonte continued, “By aggressively pursuing grants like these, we can fix up our town and still be fiscally responsible. It’s a win win.” “We are in the concept phase right now and we are looking for feedback from the community before we move forward with the final design.” Altomonte commented. “We’ll be announcing the date of a community meeting to hear from the community and the sports leagues in the next few weeks.”
