North Centerville Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary

WENT COUNTRY FOR A NIGHT CLOSE TO 150 GUESTS ARRIVED IN FULL COUNTRY ATTIRE to the first Country Night held by North Centerville Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary on April 18, 2015. At the door, guests could purchase raffle tickets for the possibility of winning one of two baskets. They each held gift certificates for a local BBQ restaurant, a bottle of wine, and a cowboy hat planter. Coordinator and President of the Ladies Auxiliary Marie Wood, along with Vice President Alexis Bracken, Lois Marr, and Charlene Steiner made certain the banquet room had a real country feel to it. The 20 members of the Ladies Auxiliary all wore silver sheriff badges and were ready to handle any rowdy “cowpokes” they encountered! The highlight of the night was hearing the popular country band, “After the Reign” play their phenomenal

music. They have performed shows with Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Lee Brice and many more. Once they start playing they go non-stop. Ladies Auxiliary member Charlene Steiner said, “They played two and a half hours straight and kept the dance floor packed all night!” She added that the Ladies Auxiliary received positive feedback from the guests. North Centerville Volunteer Fire Company President Tom Horner commended the Ladies Auxiliary. “They did an outstanding job tonight!” Ladies Auxiliary President Wood noted that the funds raised will be used to help the firemen when they are at working fires, such as bringing them coffee or iced drinks. Please note that the firemen will hold their annual Comedy Night on May 9, 2015 at the North Centerville Firehouse.

Matawan/Aberdeen Tiger Den 6 of Pack 66 VISIT COMMUNITY MAGAZINE’S OFFICES On April 2, 2015, Tiger Den 6 of Pack 66 of Matawan/Aberdeen, along with their Den Leaders and parents, stopped by the offices of Community Magazine (CM) in Airport Plaza. CM’s Editor-in-Chief was onsite to give the boys a tour of the office, as well as a lesson on basic information gathering in journalism, where they learned about The Five W’s (Who, What, Where, When & Why) and the importance this formula is for a journalist to collect for a complete story. The boys also enjoyed pizza and juice, courtesy of CM. Den Leader Michelle Hintenach and her husband, Shannon, said, “The purpose of the Go See It was for the boys to learn how media sources pool together information to keep the community aware of happenings and events.” If you are interested in joining Tiger Den 6 of Pack 66 in Matawan/ Aberdeen, you can email recruitment@cubscoutpack66.com.

Keyport’s Annual Beach Bonfire

Story Lizz Dinnigan

Close to 200 people turned out for the Keyport Spring Beach Bonfire, held at Beach Park on the Keyport Waterfront in mid-April. Over the past several years, Keyport has been creating fun new events to bring the community together and attract visitors. (For example, the new Antiques & Artisan Festival will be held May 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) The bonfire was so successful for the second year in a row, that the Keyport Recreation Commission is interested in making it a permanent annual event. The free event included three pancake-eating contests for different age groups, music and refreshments. Local Boy Scout Troop 364 started and manned the fire, while Girl Scout Troop 863 oversaw the snack table and the pancake-eating contest. Special thanks goes out to Keyport Recreation Commission, Keyport Fire Department, Keyport Police Department, Borough Council, Keyport DPW, Keyport IHOP, Keyport 7-11 and Keyport Stop & Shop.

Help Find Pixie & Athena a Forever Home Meet Pixie!

Pixie is 2 to 3 years old and 7 lbs, She is spayed, heartworm negative, microchipped, and up to date on shots. She is in a foster home with other dogs and fits right in. She is cat friendly and kid friendly too! She loves to be on your lap. She is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. She is super sweet and human friendly. She’s fairly quiet and doesn’t really bark much at all. She is crate trained. Pixie would do well in a home with another dog to keep her company. She isn’t completely house-broken yet, but is pee-pad trained and doesn’t have any accidents in the crate. If you’re interested in adopting Pixie, visit www.castle-of-dreams.com.

Meet Athena!

She is a three-year-old Shepherd-Husky mix. Athena is very loyal to her foster family and will do well with an adopter with previous shepherd experience. Athena is well-trained and knows most commands. She is playful at times and loves to cuddle on the couch. She gets along with other dogs who are not too hyper. Athena is spayed, micro-chipped, up to date on all shots and is house trained. She loves to go on long walks and would make a great hiking buddy. She loves attention and especially the occasional belly rub. Athena would prefer a home with older or adult children and an owner who is not gone for long periods of time. If you’re interested in adopting Athena, please www.castle-of-dreams.com.

HAZLET SCHOOL AND HAZLET PBA Donate to POAC and New Special Needs Registry is Announced

PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS of Sycamore Drive Early Childhood Learning Center in Hazlet participated in a yearly walk-a-thon on April 16, 2015 to show their support for Parents of Autistic Children (POAC). As April is Autism Awareness Month, the students were involved in many different activities that promote autism awareness. The indoor activities included coloring a puzzle piece, which has become the symbol representing autism. These puzzle pieces were displayed throughout the school hallways. Each class also had a ten minute lesson connecting their participation in the walk-a-thon to autism awareness through the story, “My Friend with Autism,” by Beverly Bishop. Every student received a participation prize and sticker saying “Give me a hug, I participated in the Student Walk-a-Thon today.” “We are proud to celebrate student differences and honored to work with students with disabilities ensuring a compassionate and supportive school culture,” said Principal Ms. Susan Galbraith. The Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Bernard Bragen, Director of Special Services Mr. Thomas Tooley, and Principal Galbraith are committed to an inclusive learning environment for the students. Principal Galbraith added that many of the families enjoyed additional fun on the evening of the walk-a-thon at Chuck E. Cheese, who donated 15% of all purchases to POAC. Families of the students were also able to make donations through the use of a form or by going online. Principal Galbraith shared that Team Sycamore Drive raised $2,760 for POAC. Several members of the Hazlet PBA Police Benevolent Association were in attendance prior to the walk-athon and once again presented a donation of $1,000 to POAC Executive Director Gary Weitzen and Director of Program Development Autism Services Simone Tellini. This nonprofit organization provides training, services, outreach, and support for thousands of people throughout New Jersey and across the country. Ms. Tellini commended everyone involved. “It was very

inspiring to see kids helping kids, especially at that age. Hazlet School District has been very supportive of kids on the spectrum. It’s an example of what a town does when they pull together.” POAC trained the Hazlet Police Department, and continues to work with the paraprofessionals in the school district. Just after this event, POAC held assemblies for the fifth and sixth grades in the Hazlet School District. “We explained what autism is which helps them to imagine what it might be like to have autism; and we discuss how they can be a friend to anyone with special needs. Our ultimate goal is to work with the community to make it a safer place for those with autism and special needs,” said Ms. Tellini. In keeping with the importance of Autism Awareness Month, Hazlet Police Lt. Ted Wittke announced the institution of a new voluntary Special Needs Registry in April that will help police in their dealings with autistic persons. Lt. Wittke explained what the registry will mean for those who participate. “In 2014 our officers received training on Autism from POAC (Parents of Autistic Children). This training has since helped our officers on several occasions in their responding to calls with Autistic persons. The Hazlet Police Department has recently taken an even more proactive approach in helping our residents with Autism by starting a Special Needs Registry. This registry is completely voluntary as well as confidential and will only be used by law enforcement during an emergency. If you are living with someone who has Autism, Alzheimer’s disease, or any other problem communicating with police during an emergency situation, we encourage you to register. We feel that this can only better prepare our police department and better serve the residents of Hazlet. The police ask that you take a few minutes to do this for your loved one instead of waiting until something tragic happens and wishing you had.” If you have any questions about the registry or would like to receive the Special Needs registration form, please contact Detective Lieutenant Ted Wittke at twittke@hazlettwp.org.

Local Realtor is

Driven to Excellence CARISSA MARSHALL is more than just a real estate agent. She

comes from a position where she knows intimately about homes. She knows what sells, what doesn’t and what her clients need from their home. Organization, floor space, details, what it takes to keep a home and the kind of layout that parents may need from their living space isn’t lost to her. She is a newcomer to real estate, but her background prepared her well for her new career path. Carissa has been a stay-at-home mom for eight years. That experience, combined with her prior business experience makes her uniquely qualified to help her customers find their dream home. After a long and successful career in the fashion industry, Carissa decided it was time to move back into the workplace. The attention to detail that was necessary to keep a home and to excel in the fashion industry is reflected in her work as a real estate agent. Real estate is the perfect venue for her creative talents and her desire to be her own boss. Motivated and driven to enter the work world again, she needed something that allowed her to have it all. “The flexible schedule that I have as an agent allows me to be available for my clients and customers and still have the luxury of time for my family,” noted Carissa. Carissa enjoyed selling women’s fashions, but found that she wanted something that extended a greater challenge to her. The idea of helping someone find the perfect home, the perfect place to raise children or to spend quiet evenings appealed to her in several ways. While she enjoyed filling her customers’ closets with beautiful clothing, it was a greater challenge to help them to find the home that they desired. Ms. Marshall knows the competition out there in the work world today and she’s not the least intimidated. During her time in the retail fashion industry, she received sales achievement awards for exceeding store sales goals, and surpassing her own personal goals. She brings the same passion and drive to the field of real estate. More important to Carissa than the sales awards she received is the national recognition that she achieved for going above and beyond all requirements in customer service. In fact, you might say that customer service appears to be a family passion. Michael Marshall, Carissa’s husband is no stranger to excellence in customer service himself. Michael and his business partner Teddy Koczon own a local restaurant that has been consistently applauded for the level of customer service they offer to their customers. Their franchise restaurant, Perkins Family Restaurant in Hazlet (Airport Plaza) was recently awarded national recognition for their own customer service efforts. Carissa wants to be more than a real estate agent to her clients. She desires to be and in fact is seen as a trusted advisor in the search for a new home and more. Focusing on using the latest in real estate technology and ongoing training that allows her to provide more for her customers, Carissa makes it a point to be available to her clients. She takes the time to respond to their needs and concerns, and is her wish to establish long-term and lasting relationships with every client that she serves. Carissa is a member of the Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean Counties MLS and the National Association of Realtors and The New Jersey Association of Realtors. She may be reached directly at 908.601.8487, at Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate office at 732.264.3456 or by email at cmarshall@glorianilson.com.

SINCE SEPTEMBER 1999, Good News Christian Preschool in Keyport has had a very special tree growing in the preschool hallway. The “Giving Tree” was planted with seeds of Christian love, which allows our children to learn that by helping others they can make a difference in the world. Each month something new appears on the tree and gives the children and their families an opportunity to spread their love by caring for others. The children can take a leaf home and return with a donation of food or other items being collected for the specific month. There is a collection basket under the tree where the items “sprouted by the tree” are placed and distributed to different organizations. In January and February, the tree grew hearts for “Gifts of Love” for area Nursing Homes. Shamrocks sprouted in March and the children collected “Green Foods” for the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry. During the months of September and October the Giving Tree sprouted “Peanut Butter & Jelly Leaves” and “Breakfast Cereal Leaves” for the Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry. During the months of November and December the tree will be decorated with “Holly Leaves” with the names of Monmouth County children who have been stricken with cancer. Gifts will be collected for these children and will be distributed by the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) located in Neptune. ECF is part of state-wide organization which embraces the entire family devastated by childhood cancer. In the past, the Giving Tree has spread its love to many other community based services and those in need. We have collected school supplies for Manna House, the Women’s Shelter of Monmouth County, money for the International Red Cross, September 11 Victims Fund and the Marine Corps Operation Little Angels. The Giving Tree has also spread its love to those devastated by natural disasters such as the Tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina. The tree once grew “Lollipops for Lucas” with supplies for a benefit spaghetti dinner for Lucas Viscomi, a former Good News student who had been stricken with a terminal disease. We hope to keep our tree growing for many years to come and that our children will grow to make a difference in their world. Good News Christian Preschool is a ministry of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, located at 60 Maple Place in Keyport.

A.C.T.S. TENTH ANNUAL MUSIC RECITAL COMING IN JUNE ABSOLUTE COMMUNITY Talent Show

(A.C.T.S.) will hold their annual music recital on June 20, 2015 at New Monmouth Baptist Church in Middletown. The show is sponsored by Absolute Music located in Airport Plaza, Hazlet. About 140 students will be showcased while performing on guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, violins, cellos, woodwinds, brass, ukes,

and vocals. Absolute Music owner John Albino said, “The ages of the performers range from 7 to 70 years old including our own Absolute Music Choir. We also get performance help from some of my longtime music friends. This year, Mark Tornillo who is a singer for the Metal Band ACCEPT will be performing with the kids.” The A.C.T.S. recital is more like a concert, said Albino. “It’s truly amazing and a blessing. The event starts at noon and finishes up around 5:00 p.m. There will be a full sound system and lightshow. We will also have a gift auction. With help provided by our friends at Perkins, we will serve a wonderful hot buffet lunch.” Purchasable items include T-shirts and a DVD of the show. All proceeds will go to Precision Tuned to Musically Inspire Children (PTTMIC), a Foundation started in 2012 of which Albino is the CEO. “PTTMIC was started as we watched the effects of the economy, especially after the Market crashed. We watched normal working families fall apart financially and we saw the effects this had on the children. We wanted to be there for the families by helping them give their children a sense of normalcy through the difficult times. PTTMIC has helped hundreds of kids through the years and hopefully will continue to do so by giving lessons, instruments, and scholarships to kids who need it. We also work with other schools to pay for students who can’t come to our area. Students and their families qualify by income verification.” For more information, contact John Albino at Absolute Music at 732.888.4404 or email him at absolutemusicinc@hotmail.com.

WHOLETRITION IN 12 is a customized exercise and nutrition program that was designed to help clients transform their health, body and ultimately their life all in 12 weeks. The program is led by Certified Clinical Nutritionist Alesha Lazan, MS, CHHC. She has been working and educating clients since 2013. She teaches them how to care for their bodies by making healthy nutritional choices, exercising, and much more. Lazan shares details about Wholetrition and why her program stands out. “Wholetrition is unique in the sense that we don’t believe in the ‘one size fits all’ approach. Meal plans are customized to fit the needs of the client. I am also not just a nutritionist, but I am a coach. I help my clients throughout the whole process. I am not a quick fix program either. I teach my clients how to live a lifestyle and feel healthy. There is no need to obsess over calorie counting and the scale number how do you feel on the inside? How are your clothes fitting you? Weight does not indicate health, but when one is healthy they drop down to a healthy weight. I also exercise with my clients. I believe exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. My exercise classes are different because they incorporate a burst training/ interval training method. This type of exercise has proven to burn fat and build muscle. As long as the client is committed, then I am committed to their success. I think that is something that makes me stand out – because I genuinely care about my clients.” Ever since Lazan was a child she has had stomach issues. As she got older, especially during her college years, these issues worsened due to poor nutrition and an unhealthy lifestyle. Tiredness, headaches, and gastrointestinal problems were constant. After college she worked for a clinical nutritionist who found out through an elimination diet that Lazan had food allergies, leaky gut, and high cortisol levels. She began making better choices and totally changed her lifestyle around. Her personal journey has led her on a path to helping others. “Most people don’t know what it’s like to really feel good. My job is to help people figure out what works for their body and put them on a sustainable plan that can be followed for life,” said Lazan. There are different wellness programs from which a client can choose. In all of the programs, clients learn how to feed their cells the right nutrients; renew their metabolism; improve digestion; shed extra weight; and restore energy. Some of the specifics in Wholetrition in 12 are a low glycemic nutrition plan; healthy meal ideas; weekly interval training; and a weekly seminar that Lazan notes has become a type of support group. “We talk about different topics regarding food. We also are there just to support one another and understand we are not alone in this journey.” Lazan said she has a basic “diet” plan that she starts each client on. “From there we see what the progress is, are their symptoms improving, are they losing weight, etc. That determines where I go from there.” There are also three and six month programs that are available just for nutrition counseling. The three and six month programs do not include exercise. For full details of the Wholetrition in 12 program, visit www.wholetrition. com/wholetrition-in-12/.

Keyport First Responder

A PPRECI ATION DINNER

THE EXTRAORDINARY LEVEL OF SELFLESS DEDICATION, service and true camaraderie exhibited by Keyport’s first responders and First Aid Squad volunteers was recognized at the Keyport First Aid Squad Annual Dinner, held in late March at the town’s First Aid Building. The Keyport First Aid Squad Auxiliary presented the squad with a check totaling $21,000, earned from the Steal BINGO and Tricky Tray fundraisers held throughout the year. “Most people in volunteer organizations don’t want recognition or a thank you,” says Tom Gallo, President of the Keyport First Aid Squad. “We do what we do. No one does it for a trophy or plaque.” But regardless, awards were handed out to Captain Dan Neff (243 calls), Chief Ken Krohe (231 calls) and 2nd Lt. Dylan Borders (206 calls) for being the top three EMT Responders. Bob

“Pop” Poling (384 calls), Jeff Magill (276 calls) and Rich Lecomte (183 calls) were acknowledged for being the Top EMS Driver Responders. In all the acceptance speeches, the resonating theme was that they work well together as a large team and family. Other awards included; Exceptional Support, Browns Point Marine Services in Keyport, and Paul Gasior and George Jensen; Decade as Treasurer/Secretary, Bob “Pop” Poling; Betty-Anne Szaro Award, Cadet President Jessie Lowther; and Tocky Staeger Award, Cadet VicePresident Stephanie Goodrow. Established in 1927, the organization responded to 1,307 calls in 2014 alone. It also assists neighboring communities and offers CPR classes to the community. Last November, the squad was chosen as “2014 Outstanding Volunteer EMS Agency” statewide by the N.J. Department of Health.
