elcome to our September issue of Community Magazine! Autumn is just around the corner and the children are headed back to school. This time of year is my favorite, the weather is undoubtedly the most pleasurable, especially coming off one of the hottest summers on record, and we all can look forward to the fall festivals in our area. This season is the perfect back drop to shop, stroll and unwind with your friends and family, and we have compiled most of these events in and around your area on pages 20 and 21 of this issue. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor and remember children and families affected by these diseases. Go GOLD for the month of September, bring awareness and volunteer, it’s important.

American Pharoah at his morning workout on August 1, 2015 at Monmouth Park Racetrack.
Like most summers, Monmouth County had an exciting one. Most notably was the arrival of American Pharoah at Monmouth Park Racetrack in late July for the Haskell. As a horse enthusiast and one who enjoys the ponies, I didn’t miss the opportunity to head over to the Park to watch the Triple Crown winner in his morning workout. Waking up before 5:00 a.m. on a Saturday wasn’t ideal, but I got the chance to see this super horse up close, and who knows when there will be another Triple Crown winner (we only waited 37 years!). I wanted to share a photo I took of him (above) with CM’s readers, it definitely was a memorable experience. Thank you for always supporting Community Magazine,

“We are honored to work with an organization that makes such a powerful impact on the most helpless members in our local community – the homeless animals,” said Estephan. “In line with the Weichert culture, we are grateful to be able to make a difference for these animals and the people who care for them.” The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA) was founded in 1945 to care for the community’s homeless, neglected and abused animals. The exhibit running now until September 30, 2015 in the series, Capturing the Game, showcases fine artist Mike Kupka. whose work is inspired by music, movies and his love of sports. Kupka’s pieces appear 8

Their family and friends as well.” Kupka studied at duCret School of Art in Plainfield, NJ where he was introduced to the work of his greatest influences: Norman Rockwell, Robert McGinnis, and James Bama by his professor and mentor, Peter Caras. KEYPORT’S 49TH ANNUAL
FIREMAN’S FAIR Story Lizz Dinnigan
THE 49TH ANNUAL FIREMAN’S FAIR, the volunteer departments’ single biggest annual fundraiser, was held at Fireman’s Park on the town waterfront. The six-day celebration ran from August 10 through August 15 and culminated with a fireworks show. “After all expenses, approximately $6,000 will go to each fire company,” says David Olsen, fair chairman. “The money covers the bills, including electric, gas and water. The individual companies have smaller fundraisers that support their own firehouses, but the fair benefits us as a whole.” The companies are Hook and Ladder Co., Fire Patrol, Engine Co.
#1, Lincoln Hose #1, Raritan Hose #2, Liberty Hose #3 and Eagle Hose #4 - with a total of 136 volunteer firefighters. The fair drew close to 10,000 visitors. “We had a good year,” says Olsen. “It’s on track with or exceeded last year. The weather was great all week. Showers early on one day scared people away, although it did not rain at night. The fair is always at its best when the weather cooperates. Rain and excessive heat can be problems.” The fair features a selection of rides for all ages, live bands, DJ, face painting and fairytale characters. The firemen, along with help from
the Keyport Ladies Auxiliaries, Red Raider Parent Club and Keyport Recreation Commission, manned the game booths and cooked up a feast of snacks for sale under the big top, including seafood, pizza, burgers, sausages and hotdogs. Something special is in the works for the 50th anniversary of the fair next year, the dates for which have been already set for August 8 through August 13, 2016. “We are hashing out a lot of good ideas,” says Olsen. “We definitely want to do something big, like have paratrooper landing at the fair or have a tightrope walker. We’re not sure just yet.”
MATAWAN WOMAN’S CLUB TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS The Woman’s Club of Matawan will be celebrating 100 years since their founding in October of 1915 with a “birthday” party on October 4, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at their clubhouse at 199 Jackson Street in Matawan. Al Savolaine, Matawan Town Historian, will speak about what Matawan was like in 1915, what brought these women together to form this group, and some of the significant contributions the club has made in 100 years. In addition to Mr. Savolaine’s talk there will be period clothing on display from the 1915 time frame when the club was founded. This event is free and open to the public. Birthday cake and light refreshments will be served. All are welcome to come join in the celebration and commemoration of 100 years of community service and charitable contributions by this prominent local organization.

MATAWAN TEEN IS YOUTH AMBASSADOR FOR
JDRF
Story Susan Murphy LEFT TO RIGHT: The Kenny family is united in its fundraising efforts for JDRF. Stephanie Kenny, 15-year-old Rachel, Chuck Kenny, and 17-year-old Christine take a family picture at the start of an August 16, 2015 fundraiser in front of Starbucks in Shrewsbury.
CHRISTINE KENNY IS A 17-YEAR-OLD INCOMING SENIOR at Matawan Regional High School. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was just 22-months-old. She explained, “I do not remember life without T1D, so it never really was a negative thing to me, and I never considered it as a “disorder” as others would. Testing my blood sugar and taking insulin is as normal to me as brushing teeth is to you. When I was 11, I realized how others could view T1D, but I never let that change how I see it.” Early on, her parents Chuck and Stephanie, decided to be strong allies and work through the daily struggles as a family. They also enlisted the help of their younger daughter Rachel. Their support and encouragement has been constant and has helped Christine tremendously. She shared an example. “My family has definitely influenced how I view T1D and made it quite positive. I remember when I was really little having to go to the endocrinologist and how excited I was because my parents made it fun. I would put a dress on, go to the doctor, and then we would go out to dinner in New York, where the doctor’s office was located.” Now, as a teen, Christine faces the pressures of high school as well as the day-to-day monitoring of her T1D. She could easily become overwhelmed by it all, yet she stays positive. “T1D is so normal to me I don’t put my full focus on it like someone would think. I don’t label myself as a Type 1 Diabetic, and I don’t let it define me as a person,” she stated. Christine has a variety of interests in school that she pursues actively. “I am on the varsity tennis team – first singles, play the piano, and am in the competition chorus group. I am in the STEM Academy in my school, and I want to major in psychology and education in college.” The one challenge which she handles quite well is her time on the tennis team. “When I’m on the tennis court, it is crucial that my blood sugar does not go low, or else I have to stop for 15 minutes. To avoid this, I need to make
14
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
changes in my insulin dose. This will help me to not go low in a match, or at any time when I am active. I constantly change my insulin to adjust for numerous factors, and find it to be a true struggle when I adjust my insulin a certain way based on a plan for the day, and then have the activities unexpectedly changed. For example, if we are not as active at tennis practice as I had planned, my blood sugar for the whole day could change, but I have learned to become more flexible because of it.” Outside of school, Christine joins her family in supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in their dedication to funding research to find a cure for T1D. Her father Chuck said, “Once again, Christine’s Crusaders, our family fund-raising team will be walking to raise funds in Avon at the Walk for a Cure on Sunday, October 11, 2015. This year will be our 16th year walking and we are hoping to reach a cumulative fund raising goal of $300,000. It is an honor to fundraise for the JDRF and we are proud to be part of the effort made by them to find the cure. In the past, Christine was selected as the poster child for the JDRF’s national campaign, appearing in two commercials which have appeared on television nationwide and in movie previews. The print ads have also appeared in Time Magazine, Elle Girl, Entertainment Weekly, Family Circle, Country Living, Better Homes & Garden, Diabetes Management, and many others.” He noted that Christine is now and has been for several years, the team captain and serves as the spokesperson. She is also a JDRF youth ambassador. Through the JDRF, the family stays busy representing them at fundraising events, such as the one recently held on August 16, 2015 at the Grove in Shrewsbury. They had a table in front of Starbucks, and sold tickets for $100 for the raffle of a new car. Monies raised for the raffle of a car helped to raise more funds for research. Christine said, “It was fun representing the JDRF for the fundraiser! Even though some people would not donate, the next person would come up, donate some money, and talk
to us. I even met a person who works with the doctor that diagnosed me.” As team captain of Christine’s Crusaders and as JDRF youth ambassador, Christine would like to send a powerful message to young people who have T1D and are struggling to remain positive. “I want to tell anyone with T1D that you are not alone, singled-out, or an outcast because your pancreas decided to stop producing insulin. T1D has taught me to be strong even in conditions where you have been knocked down. You should not let T1D become your label or your personality. We did not ask for this, but we will fight and keep our T1D in control until the cure comes.” Christine recalled a special moment in school when she was able to better inform others about T1D. “Last year, I presented a slide show that talked about it to the STEM Academy. I did not know who would be there, or how it would go, and I will admit I was nervous to tell a lot of people what I have to deal with every second, and the history of T1D. It actually went really well, and I enjoyed answering questions from my peers and teacher. I’m happy that more people from my school now know what T1D actually is.” For those dealing with T1D, Christine would like to remind them that there are still fun things to do in your life. “I do not let it get in my way. I like educating others on what T1D actually is, and it puts a smile on my face when someone wants to know what I deal with. Besides dealing with T1D, I love tennis, playing the piano, and I enjoy singing in chorus. I also love the beach and skiing.” Christine continues to look ahead and remain positive. “The JDRF has helped me find a lot of hope that there will be a cure soon, and I can’t wait to see when there will be!” Her father shared some details about diabetes and the reason Christine must be diligent in monitoring her blood sugar levels. Type 1 Diabetes is an auto immune disorder in which the pancreas stops producing insulin. T1D should not be confused with Type 2 Diabetes which is a metabolic disorder in which a pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body does not use the insulin effectively. The only form of treatment for Type 1 Diabetes is insulin which is not a cure, but life support. Without daily injections of insulin, a person with Type 1 Diabetes, would not survive. Insulin is the key or bridge which permits the nutrients provided by food to be used by the cells to support the needs of the body. Type 1 carries constant and considerable short-term and long term health risks. Therefore, Christine must constantly monitor her blood sugar levels and adjust her insulin which she takes by injection four times per day to meet her schedule of activities. Chuck and Stephanie Kenny feel their daughter handles her life with Type 1 Diabetes with grace and maturity. “Christine is very positive and has never let T1D prevent her from accomplishing anything. She manages it very responsibly and has excellent judgment when adjusting her insulin based upon her activities. Christine monitors her food intake and is always prepared with her medical supplies. She never complains. She helps educate others about Type 1 Diabetes and encourages others who have difficulty handling Type 1. We are very proud of Christine.” For further information or to make a donation, visit www. jdrf.org.

Story Susan Murphy
Bayshore Senior Health, Education & Recreation Center To Celebrate 40 Years In October THE BAYSHORE SENIOR HEALTH, EDUCATION AND RECREATION CENTER (aka The Bayshore Senior Center) is a nonprofit, non-denominational facility that serves the seniors in the Bayshore communities of Keansburg, West Keansburg, Union Beach, Hazlet, and parts of Holmdel. On October 1, 2015, the Center will celebrate its 40-year anniversary. Today’s seniors are much more active, more involved with their health care, interested in new technology education, yet still have that need for social interaction. In an effort to continue to better serve the needs of the present and future seniors in the Bayshore area, the center expanded its original facilities to include a second floor, extensive renovations of the first floor, and increased parking. The design of the addition and renovated area is now totally handicapped accessible. Sr. Mary Simon explained in the August newsletter just how the Center got its start. “In 1975, Fr. Valentino, Pastor of St. Ann’s Church in Keansburg, having received a small grant, asked me to start a center for the seniors in the area. Sr. Mary Grace and I visited the seniors in the town, particularly in Middle Road Village (Hazlet) to assess the need. We began two days a week in the auditorium of St. Ann’s School with seven members and when I left, there were hundreds.” On September 1, 1976, the Center moved from the auditorium to what was then a parish building, Corrigan Hall. Fr. Strano continued the support of St. Ann’s Parish for the center as they sought funding from governmental as well as private sources for renovations and improvements. Sr. Simon shared what the center meant to her. “This has been an enriching experience. The people here are beautiful. When you think of all they have lived through – the Depression,
16
The Center is a Place Where There are No Strangers, Only New Friends wars, and illnesses – it was a renewal of faith to be with them.” The Center continues to be a reliable place to go for information, recreation, and health service needs. The Center serves an average of 200 seniors on a regular basis with a total enrollment of 490. The cost to join per year is $15 and you must be 60 years or older. Transportation is provided to and from the Center by the Monmouth County SCAT program. Coffee and tea are available in the morning, and thanks to the generous donations from Costco, seniors also enjoy muffins and Danish. Lunch is served daily through Meals on Wheels thanks to Interfaith Neighbors, at a fee of $2.50. Each week approximately 175 congregate and 200 homebound meals are prepared, packed and delivered from the kitchen. Creative expression is encouraged for the on-going development of each member. Seniors can participate in arts and crafts, exercise, knitting and crocheting classes, informative lectures, use of a Wii gaming system, book discussions, and once-a-week Bingo time. Activities Director Sr. Sharon Kelly plans trips and plays that the seniors can attend. Time shared together is one of the most important facets of the Center and it has become a “home base” for many of the members. They share conversations, share memories and laughter and especially find comfort in knowing that if they are not seen for a few days, they will receive a phone call or card because someone will miss them. Executive Director Patricia McCarthy took over the position held by Sr. Elizabeth for over 30 years. “This is such a necessary place. So many people live alone and don’t have family or friends to share the holidays or a birthday. Once they come here, they begin to form friendships. They are very appreciative and comfortable. They feel safe here. I firmly believe we fill the gap and fulfill
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
their basic need for social interaction.” She emphasized, “With the help of our Board, who is very generous with their time and their own money, we are able to have a place where seniors can go.” A much-needed service, the Visiting Nurses Association of New Jersey (VNANJ), came to the Center in 2005. This community health center is open to seniors as well as all members of the community. Those who have insurance are welcome and those without insurance pay based on their income. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They have become a valuable part of the community especially since it is in walking distance for so many people, noted Director McCarthy. Maintaining the funds needed to fulfill the seniors’ physical, social, educational and recreational needs continues to be a challenge. As with many non-profits, it is a struggle to meet financial needs. It was noted that for many years, the State of New Jersey has given monies to help subsidize the operation of the Center. Because of the fiscal constraints of the state, they have not been funded for the last several years. The Bayshore Senior Center receives very little outside funding to support the $175,000 yearly budget. Monies that keep the Center solvent come from the yearly membership dues, private donations, and fundraisers. The rental of the Center’s second floor banquet hall, Scudiery Reception Hall, is also helpful. It can be rented after hours for birthday or anniversary parties, wedding receptions, as well as baby or bridal showers. Bayshore Senior Health, Education and Recreation Center is located at 100 Main Street in Keansburg. It is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information, call 732.495.2454, email baysenday@aol.com or visit www. bayshoreseniorctr.org today!

WORK SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TO TRANSFORM FORMER ABERDEEN EMS FACILITY TO NEW HOME FOR H.A.M. THERAPEUTIC RECREATION PROGRAM Work is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks that will transform the former Aberdeen EMS facility at 651 Prospect Avenue in Cliffwood into the new home of the H.A.M. Therapeutic Recreation Program. The contract for the work, which includes general repairs and updates, a new parking lot, upgrades on the restrooms and doorways, and other improvements to make the building ADAcompliant, was awarded to Quality 1st Basement Systems of Cliffwood, N.J. said Township Manager Holly Reycraft. The project is expected to be completed on the 5,700-square-foot building by the end of the year. When the construction is complete, the H.A.M. Program, which provides a variety of educational and social activities for the developmentally disabled residents of Hazlet, Holmdel, Aberdeen and Matawan, will have a new, expanded home will be used for camp and other organized events, including its weekly Night Owls program of various social activities, as well as regularly scheduled cooking, arts and crafts, exercise and dance classes. Currently, the group operates out of a small classroom in Matawan which it has outgrown. H.A.M. programs including bowling, movies and a six-week traveling summer day camp will continue to be offered at offsite locations. The Prospect Avenue building became vacant with the privatization of EMS, and ownership was initially transferred to the Aberdeen Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association as facility for their meetings. Last fall, ownership was transferred to Aberdeen Township for H.A.M.’s headquarters and general community uses, including fundraisers and programs for seniors. The space will also include an office for the Aberdeen Township P.B.A., noted Reycraft.

Keyport offered its own spin on National Night Out, which is a community-awareness event that takes place in cities and towns across the country to educate the public on police, first-aid and safety programs offered in their town. Several emergencyresponse vehicles, including police cruisers, ambulances and various types of fire trucks were on hand for exploration. Held on August 4, 2015 along West Front Street, the event is “basically about crime prevention,” says Keyport Police Chief George “Butch” Casaletto. “It shows the community that we care and do everything we can, not only for our residents but the public in general.” Since only about 150 showed up this year, Casaletto has bigger plans in mind for 2016 to boost attendance numbers. “We are going to start advertising early, get our recreation department involved, and maybe get some kids rides and a nighttime outdoor movie.” Keyport started presenting this event about three years ago after a lapse. “Each year it keeps growing,” says Casaletto. “Having our mayor and council involved helps this event along with all our emergency-response teams. We include the Keyport Fire Department, Keyport First Aid, Keyport Office of Emergency Management, Keyport CERT, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office and the Keyport Police Explorers. It’s a team effort, and it shows during times of emergencies that we, as a team, do a tremendous job together.”

Keyport Sailing Center Hosts Junior Sailing Regatta at KYC Story Lizz Dinnigan
Everything was in place on July 24, 2015 for the Keyport Sailing Center’s Junior Sailing Regatta at the Keyport Yacht Club (KYC), everything except the wind. “The day was one of perfect weather, and the camaraderie of sailors was even better,” says Wayne Woerner, KYC junior sailing chairman and president of the Keyport Sailing Center. “The only thing that could have made it more enjoyable would have been a little more wind. Strong winds or not, everyone had a good time.” There were 54 children ages 8 to 17
24
competing in beginner and advanced level race classes who represented the KYC, Monmouth Boat Club (MBC) in Red Bank, Raritan Yacht Club (RYC) in Perth Amboy and the Richmond County Yacht Club (RCYC) on Staten Island. The KYC Regatta is the third in a series of junior sailing regattas this summer at clubs on Raritan Bay, and the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers. It began with a breakfast and skipper’s meeting, and ended with a post-race lunch party and awards presentation. The Junior Sailing Program is a sevenweek course that focuses on both on-water and on-shore lessons about boat handling and safety, sail trim and navigation, boat rigging, and racing tactics. Each Fridays, students can choose to compete in a Junior Sailing Regatta to put their skills to the test in a real competitive environment. Boats used are Opti Green (first year), Opti White (10 years and under), Opti Blue (11 to 12 years), Opti Red (13 to 15 years), and 420s, JYs and Lasers, based
on weight and experience. There were three race courses with three different starts, with seven races completed. Winners took home trophies. The top winners from each race, respectively, were: Marielle Abel and Caitlin Abel (KYC) in first; Kyle Simandy and Tomas Rios (RYC) in second; and Gabby Woerner and Abby Molman (KYC) in third place racing in 420s; Jack Murphy and Carolyn Ottesen (RCYC), Michael Fox, Padric Burke and Ben Leputu (RYC) and Misia Leo and Ben Huefner (RYC) in JYs; Andrew Milman (KYC), Topher Lucyk (MBC) and Alexandra Vought (MBC) in Lasers; Nadine Rouba (RYC), Haylie Payne (RCYC) and Justin Siracusa (RCYC) in Opti Blue; Elissa Grassia (RCYC), Jordan Moore (RCYC) and Brennan Magee (RYC) in Opti Green; Jennifer McDonald (KYC) and Daniella Campione (RCYC) in Opti Red; and Maurice Gittines (KYC), Cassie Van Meter (KYC) and Michaela Moore (RCYC) in Opti White.

Furry Friends
Looking for a Forever Home Shelter dogs aren't broken, they've simply experienced more life than other dogs. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tales to tell and stories to write, the ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage. Don't pity a shelter dog, adopt one. PLANS UNDERWAY FOR SPECTACULAR FALL CONCOURS! New Jersey’s Classic Motorcar Festival
Since 2008, the Monmouth County Concours d’Elegance has raised in excess of $500,000 for local charitable causes. All proceeds generated through the 2015 Concours will benefit 180 Turning Lives Around. For four decades, 180 has provided valuable assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The positive result for these women and families is an escape from the cycle of abuse and a return to productive lives. Organizers of the Monmouth County Concours d’Elegance are busy planning what promises to be their finest event ever. New Jersey’s Classic Motorcar Festival will showcase 135 premier collectible antique automobiles and motorcycles, ranging in years from 1900 to 1974. The event takes place on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Hop Brook Farm in Holmdel from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with an October 4, 2015 rain date. “The services and programs provided by 180 Turning Lives Around are invaluable to many women and families in Monmouth County”, says Jeff Cruz, Chairman and Founder of the Monmouth County Concours. “We support their good work and constructive efforts to eliminate domestic violence and sexual abuse in our community”. In an effort to steadily improve the event in every way possible, Concours organizers recently announced two unique partnerships. Tiffany and Co., the world’s premier high-end jeweler since 1837, and Rook Coffee, a visionary coffee company founded in Monmouth County NJ. A Tiffany crystal cup will be the Best of Show award, and Tiffany jewelry will adorn models at the Concours Fashion Show. Rook Coffee will be prominently located at the VIP and Show field entrance areas of the show, distributing samples of the finest coffee available. “We are proud of our association with Tiffany & Co. and Rook Coffee and salute their willingness to support this worthwhile charitable cause. The quality of these two companies is the perfect complement to the extraordinary automobiles we will have on display this October,” says Jeff. To submit an automobile application for consideration, find event information or become a sponsor, visit www. monmouthcountyconcours.com or call 732.946.3630. A Hair-Raising Good Time at Keyport Thursday’s Dawg’s Night Out
The dog days of summer came to West Front Street on August 6, 2015 for another hair-raising Keyport Thursday. West Front Street was closed off from Broad to Main Streets for the strolling pleasure of dog-lovers and their best four-legged buds. Dogs and their owners mingled on the lively downtown road, where vendors and restaurants participated with tables of merchandise geared for dogs. Special menus and “Guys Night” drink specials were made available. Pet grooming shops and barber/shave shops offered their services to dogs and dog-lovers alike. Among participating organizations was Fur Friends in Need, a Hazlet-based shelter, bringing with them adoptable dogs and dog-friendly cats. Also included among attendees was Keyport’s own Gardening Club, holding their Tomatopalooza home-grown tomato contest. Tomatoes were entered in one of three categories— heaviest, tastiest slicing tomato and tastiest cherry tomato. Best Tasting Slicing Tomato was won by Gia Calabrese-Roberts of Keyport, Best Tasting Cherry Tomato was won by Lisa Sessa of Keyport and Heaviest Tomato (1.31 lbs) was won by Arnulfo Toro of Roselle Park. As part of the weekly Keyport Thursday’s Summer Concert Series, the Gas House Gorillas played a rousing show at the Minipark overlooking the waterfront. The jump-swing band were lively indeed, playing a howling-good set that included punked-out 40’s-50’s style swing, jump blues, rockabilly and R&B classics. Keyport Thursdays and the Summer Concert Series are made possible by the efforts of the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative. The KBBC is the managing entity of the Keyport Business Improvement District, created by ordinance of the Borough of Keyport. It is run by an elected Board of Directors, comprised of business operators, property owners, representatives of the Borough of Keyport, including Mayor and Council members, Borough committee representative and resident representative - all working to make Keyport the true Pearl of the Bayshore.

Keyport Club Hosts
17th Annual Spanish American Festival
T
he Keyport Spanish American Club hosted its 17th annual Spanish American Festival at Beach Front Park in Keyport on August 8, 2015. Festival-goers enjoyed a full day of amusements - eating, dancing, shopping and playing games throughout the sunny Saturday. Founded in 1963, President Albert Degracia said that the club was started for the large Puerto Rican population in Keyport. However, through the years and changing demographics, the organization became better known as the Spanish American Club. “New immigrants have come in, and Puerto Ricans are almost the minority as far as Latinos go," said Degracia. Community engagement is a core philosophy of the organization. The Spanish American Club awarded several scholarships to exceptional Latino students. Stand-out Keyport middle and high school students were awarded scholarships ranging from $100 to $1,500. One scholarship, open to all Monmouth County, was worth $2,000. Latino high-school students in the county had their applications and essays reviewed by a special committee of club members. Local business owner Cliff Moore was also recognized by the club, receiving the Community Engagement Award for his involvement and contributions to the Bayfront borough. As former president of the Keyport Bayfront Business Cooperative, his service and consultation proved to be invaluable to the Keyport business community. “The Spanish American Club and the work they do have been tremendous for Keyport. They care so much about the community, and it’s always great when we get to come together and celebrate,” Moore said. Although the festival has been an annual occurrence for 17 years straight, the event had been held only periodically in the past. President Degracia said that turnout had been hit or miss. Now, however, crowds of thousands make their way through the Keyport Spanish American Festival every year.
