BAYSHORE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION hosted the 7th Annual Wine & Spirits Tasting fundraising event on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Addison Park in Aberdeen. This record-breaking event hosted by Fern and Peter Esposito featured more than 300 guests and raised nearly $70,000 in support of Bayshore’s growing cardiovascular program.

It was truly a special evening highlighted by guest speaker, Nila Luccarelli of Dearborn Market in Holmdel. Nila shared an extraordinary personal story about her recent sudden and unexpected cardiac event which resulted in a frantic rush to the hospital and life-saving treatment. “We are so lucky to have Bayshore in our backyard,” Nila shared. “It is a wonderful hospital and I will forever be grateful for everyone who works there.” This year’s event, co-chaired once again by Fern and Peter Esposito, who have so generously dedicated their time to the event’s success since its inception, featured premium wines from around the globe, as well as international beers and spirits, an extensive array of hors d’oeuvres and a very special silent auction.

“The mission of Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation and events like the Wine & Spirits Tasting is clear: support the best cardiovascular care in our community,” says Joseph Stampe, president of Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations. “The continued support of our friends and neighbors helps to make the great care Nila received possible. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” Part of the Meridian Cardiovascular Network, Bayshore is a qualified Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) hospital and is approved to provide primary angioplasty procedures to patients experiencing a heart attack, offering direct access to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the region’s leading provider of cardiac surgery. Additionally, team members and physicians have worked diligently to maintain a “door-to-balloon” time significantly better than the national average. “When time is of the essence, a fast door-to-balloon time is often the differentiator when it comes to positive patient outcomes,” explains Timothy J. Hogan, regional hospital president for Monmouth County at Meridian Health. “Bayshore’s highly-trained team of health care providers developed a system we’re

Hazlet DaY
Attended by Thousands! STORY SUSAN MURPHY
A
n amazing number of visitors arrived at Veterans Memorial Park to enjoy Hazlet Day on September 19, 2015. The annual event, which is sponsored by Hazlet Recreation Department, opened at 11:00 a.m. and ended at 5:00 p.m. Within that six-hour time frame, over 5,000 people arrived to enjoy the great day. Hazlet Recreation Event Coordinator Chris McManus, who coordinated Hazlet Day for the second year, said, “All nearby parking was full, all the side streets, as well as Brookdale College campus parking lot. This event is growing bigger every year. The day was beautiful and it was a great day for everyone. It was definitely a fun time for those who attended and there was something for all ages. He estimated that Hazlet Day has been an annual event for well over 50 years. In fact, possibly as long as Hazlet Recreation Department has been in existence! The Honor Guard for the Hazlet Police Department held an opening day ceremony at 11:00 a.m. to signify the start of Hazlet Day. Following the ceremony, visitors were welcome to roam the designated park area set up for the event.
REMINDER: Hazlet Recreation has moved to the second floor of the Hazlet Town Hall (on the grounds of Veteran Memorial Park). They can be reached at 732.217.8648. Visit the township website at www.hazlettwp.org and click Recreation. Upcoming events and township activities are listed.

Entertainment was provided by NJ 101.5 radio station, which kept the music going throughout the day. Also on hand was Spring Board Entertainment. Students from Amato’s Karate and Weapons Academy; United Taekwondo; The Perna Dance Center; Creative Inspiration Academy (CIA); and The Hazlet Thunderettes performed. Local community service groups were on hand, as well as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Hazlet Police Department provided fingerprinting for visitors. There were 106 local vendors and five local food vendors. Pony rides and numerous kiddie rides kept the little ones happy and smiling. Hazlet Day 2015 was an extraordinary event and one that could easily be dubbed “Memory Day 2015” as it allowed families, friends, and neighbors of the community to come together and share in a fun-filled family-oriented day.

Warrick Dunn Charities Partners With Aaron’s, Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity to Surprise Displaced Sandy Victim WARRICK DUNN CHARITIES (WDC) partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County and Aaron’s Inc. to surprise Hurricane Sandy victim and grandmother, Ana Henn with necessities for a new start in life. Ana lost her home to Hurricane Sandy in October 2012; it was deemed unsafe and unlivable. This was a tragic blow after losing her husband earlier in the year. Ana Henn received the ultimate surprise in September, as she walked into a re-established life with her grandchild in tow. Warrick Dunn Charities and volunteers spent days filling the Henn home, a Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County rebuild. The surprise was held in front of dozens of volunteers, friends and family. Program partner, Aaron’s, Inc provided furniture for the Henn family. In addition, Ana Henn also received $5,000 as home reconstruction assistance, a benefit of WDC’s Homes for the Holidays program. Fully stocking and furnishing the home was also made possible thanks to donor and friends of Warrick Dunn Charities. The Homes for the Holidays (HFTH) program founded in 1997 by Warrick Dunn, former National Football League (NFL) all-pro running back and philanthropist supports single parents that are first-time homebuyers. The program has served 144 single parents and over 380 dependents in 14 markets across the country. Homes for the Holidays was created in honor of Dunn’s late mother, Betty Smothers, a Baton Rouge police officer who was killed during an after-hours security shift, in pursuit of her dream of homeownership. “This is the moment that we have been hoping to celebrate for years...a Hurricane Sandy Survivor. That is what Ana Henn is to us. She has overcome extremely tough

situations and never gave up. We are privileged to assist her with this new beginning. Thanks to great partners like Aaron’s Inc. and our Habitat for Humanity family; together, we were able to provide a comfortable home, beyond tragedy, for the Henn family,” said Warrick Dunn, Founder of Warrick Dunn Charities. Despite her misfortunes, Ana generates enthusiasm and has been a wonderful partner for Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County.

ABERDEEN PBA LOCAL 163 2
ANNUAL WINE TASTING EVENT
ND
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Aberdeen Police Department PBA Local 163 held its second
annual Wine Tasting event on September 10, 2015 at Addison Park
in Aberdeen. The fundraiser sold out the second to last week before the actual event took place, noted organizer Ray Campbell, a police
officer in Aberdeen Township who is currently assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit.
“This is the second largest fundraiser that we do each year.
The first is our mailer where we rely on the Township residents
who give back to the Local generously each year,” he explained.
Officer Campbell, who is the Secretary for PBA Local 163, said that although he was the event organizer, he could not have done it all
without the support of his family and friends. “My family is gracious enough to let me take time away from them to help others and for
that I am grateful. Adam Saber has been my right hand with setting this up and simply put, I could not have done this without him. Adam
is a great supporter of our local and NJ Transit PBA Local. The guy truly cares about us and gives back anytime he is able. Jay Patel
from Buy-Rite organized all of the vendors and I cannot express how
thankful I am to him for all of the work he did. I’m surprised he did not have a breakdown. Thank you Gentlemen.” ABOVE - Some members of Aberdeen PBA Local 163 pause for a photo during their annual Wine Tasting Event.
All of the beer and wine distributors that participated in the event
were provided by Buy-Rite in Cliffwood, noted Officer Campbell.
There were 25 vendors in attendance, each with approximate five different samplings. All of the food for the event was donated by local businesses. Addison Park donated a one hour hot hors d’oeuvres serving time. DeMarco's Deli, D.A. Subs, Court Jester, Blue Rock, and V&F Pizza all donated trays of food for the event.
Officer Campbell added, “Flowers by Melanie always makes and
donates our wonderful flower arrangements that party goers were
lucky enough to take home at the end of the evening.” Major sponsors for this event included the Blue Rock Café; Hand & Stone Massage Facial Spa; Adam Saber Event Entertainment; Tony Santana’s Boulevard Cigars; Buy-Rite Liquors of Cliffwood; and Flowers by
Melanie. Officer Campbell commended the businesses who helped

grateful for all the assistance he had for this event. “This event could not have been done without the assistance of all of the members of the PBA, as well as PBA President Michael Plant. We were lucky enough to raise approximately $7,000 dollars
from this event. The money will be used where the local decides to best use it.”

cards a year can be given out. Officer Campbell shared why he received a silver card. “Carmine has been a great supporter of
our endeavors through the years, along with the township. This
year, he is running a free circus on Aberdeen Day. Mr. Visone offered his response to this honor. “I was humbled and honored to receive this recognition.

ABERDEEN’S SPECIAL LADY IS THE VOICE OF GENERATION Z
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
MORISSA SCHWARTZ, a unique young lady of 21, has chosen Aberdeen as her new residence. Having moved here a little over a year ago from Woodbridge, New Jersey where she was a sixth generation resident, Ms. Schwartz brings with her a love of community, a list of impressive talents, and a promise to make a difference in the place she calls home. Her love of community, volunteering, and helping others was instilled in Morissa as a young child by her parents Leon and Sherri. From the time she was a week old, Morissa spent time with her parents at their family business, The Carpet Maven. The Schwartz’s have always volunteered in their community and for 20 years have run the Woodbridge Downtown Cruise, a car show that raises money to help food pantries, families, charities, and gives scholarships to local high schools. “Morissa was raised with morals and values, and to give back to others because that is our belief. Since we have been involved in so many events in the County, it has shown and taught Morissa to volunteer her time at these events as well as at other places such as 4-H, nursing homes, and veterans homes,” said Mrs. Schwartz. Morissa has sung the National Anthem to kick off this event for 10 years, as well as singing for the opening ceremonies at the Middlesex County Fair. Writing, singing and performing captured Morissa’s heart at an early age. “My love of writing began when I was a toddler with my father reading books to me every night before bed. Singing and performing began when my parents enrolled me in my first dance class when I was only a year old. I started dancing competitively at age three and loved it. I always sang for fun, but didn’t start singing seriously until I won the Middlesex County Queen Pageant at age 11 with my talent being singing,” shared Morissa. Years later, Morissa sang at an audition for MTV’s show, “Copycat,” and was featured on the show. “It was such a blast. Jonathan Bennett (of Mean Girls) hosted, and I had so much fun performing in front of a studio audience.” Another accomplishment of Morissa’s is that at age 16 she broke the Guinness World Record for creating the World’s Longest Chain of Bracelets! She had already been making bracelets since she was 12. Morissa became ill at age 12, was sent to numerous doctors and was misdiagnosed with everything from growing pains to having excess cerebrospinal fluid. “After a year of this, I was finally diagnosed with Lymes Disease. I was so ill that I didn’t know if I would recover. Once I did recover, though, I wanted to accomplish everything that I had been dreaming of doing my whole life, because I appreciated it. That’s when I penned a ‘bucket list.’ And since I was 12, I didn’t have the same doubts as someone who might be older and question the ease of accomplishing seemingly difficult tasks like breaking a world record or being on a billboard. At the same time, I put silly and fun things on there like learning to knit, learning to play guitar, and learning all the periodic table elements. There were only about 20 goals on it originally, but it has grown to about 50. Being on a billboard, singing on national TV, breaking a Guinness World Record, learning to knit, publishing a book, volunteering for the veterans are all examples of original goals on my bucket list that I accomplished.” Morissa has been an inspiration to many people over the years. When asked why she thinks this is, she replied, “I strive to be my best self, to push myself to do more than what people would expect. When others see me follow my dreams, my
24
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
hope is that they will as well.” She also has a few things left to do on her bucket list. “Goals I still have to accomplish include saving a life, giving a TED Talk, penning a bestselling book, and being a mentor to someone.” Mrs. Schwartz said of her daughter, “While Morissa is a gogetter, with a multitude of accomplishments, she remains extremely humble and works as hard at helping others as she does working on her goals and aspirations. From a very early age, Morissa has been a leader who always believed in doing what is right. In kindergarten, there was a boy who was special and the other kids picked on him constantly. Morissa became friends with him sitting next to him at lunch, and talking to him as if there were nothing different about him. They remain friends to this day; and Morissa continues to befriend the underdog.” She added, “And when Morissa says she wants to go for something, you better listen, because it will be done. She works incredibly hard on whatever it is that she does from her education, graduating in the top 10% of her class from The Middlesex Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences, her writing and singing, breaking a world record, graduating from Drew University with Honors in three years, volunteering, and anything and everything that she does. It is amazing being her parent; and the pride that we feel about her and her accomplishments is like no other.” In fact, Mrs. Schwartz shared that from an early age, if Morissa was asked how she was, the answer would be “marvelous” (a word she really loved). “Now I think the word “marvelous” describes her perfectly!” Morissa continues to accomplish great things. One is being a community contributor for Entertainment Weekly and writing recaps on shows such as “South Park” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” She also does interviews and features on books and music. The other is being a podcast host – The GenZ Podcast. “It is about inspiring the upcoming generation to be great leaders and to make a difference in the world, and is available on iTunes,” said Morissa. One inspirational project that Morissa has completed is publishing a book. On September 29, 2015, “Notes Never Sent” will hit the bookstores. “The idea for the book came about from the idea that everyone you meet has an impact on you, no matter how seemingly insignificant that interaction is or how much you take that person for granted. For example, I have a letter to a cashier who compliments the narrator’s clothes and brightens her day after she had a tough time in school, so she writes telling her how that small act of kindness turned her day around. I wrote this book to inspire others. Really, it’s a book about appreciating the world around you and being thankful for what you have. It is about realizing how everyone makes a difference,” explained Morissa. With all of these things filling her time, being able to volunteer and put a smile on the face of others can be challenging, yet Morissa gets it done. “There is always time for others. You make it a priority, because what is more important than making someone else happy? Volunteering and helping others are two of the best ways I could spend my time.” What gets Morissa going every day - what energizes and motivates her? “Just knowing that my actions will make a difference; that they can help others and shape the future.” More details about Morissa can be found on her website at MorissaSchwartz.com.

Morro Castle Author Program & Sandy Benefit at Old First Church in October IMAGINE THE TERROR onboard the luxury cruise ship Morro Castle as flames engulfed it in the early morning hours of September 8, 1934. Passengers had to make a choice – burn alive or jump into raging nor’easter seas off the New Jersey coast. Many took that plunge and perished; bodies washed up on local beaches for days. It was a horrific experience for those who had booked a pleasure cruise from New York to Havana, Cuba to escape the grip of the Great Depression. In the aftermath, thousands of sightseers viewed the smoldering wreck of the great ship which drifted and grounded itself just off Convention Hall in Asbury Park. For over eighty years, mystery has surrounded the Morro Castle tragedy – the sudden death of its captain, the unknown cause of the fire and the loss of 137 lives. The Morro Castle program with Deborah Whitcraft and Gretchen Coyle, co-authors of Inferno at Sea, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Old First Church, located at 69 Kings Highway in Middletown, will relive one of the greatest NJ maritime disasters. There are stories of death and survival, with rescue efforts by Jersey Shore people standing as hallmarks to heroism. Extensive research by the authors presents a fresh perspective on the Morro Castle tragedy. The program will be followed by a reception brunch and book signing. Copies of the co-authors’ 2012 large folio book, Inferno at Sea, Stories of Death and Survival Aboard the Morro Castle, will be available. Deborah C. Whitcraft, twice mayor of Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ, is the founder and president of the NJ Maritime Museum in Beach Haven. Gretchen F. Coyle, a recognized authority on NJ maritime history, is a graduate of The Baldwin School and Hollins University, an author and magazine writer, and former president of the Long Beach Island Historical Association.

All proceeds from the program and brunch will benefit the purchase of building materials for Churches Accomplishing Long Term Recovery (CALTR), a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization of volunteer construction workers dedicated to home reconstruction for Jersey Shore victims of Superstorm Sandy. Your attendance at this event will help put Sandy victims back into their homes! Advance reservations for the Morro Castle program and brunch are encouraged. To make your reservation, please send a check payable to CALTR for
$20.00 to: Old First Church, 69 Kings Highway, Middletown, NJ, 07748. Please note: the deadline for advance reservations is Tuesday, October 20. Door admission on October 24, the day of the program, will be $25.00. Call 732.758.8144 for more information. About CALTR Churches Accomplishing Long-term Recovery (CALTR) is mobilizing a new sector of volunteers to assist in repairing storm-damaged houses at the Jersey shore. Unemployed people who want to learn construction skills are being paired with high-skilled volunteers who work beside and teach them on the job. In the past two months, eight more properties
COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM
have been improved, bringing to 114 the number of homes restored through the classis-wide efforts of CALTR. Unemployed volunteers who previously thought they were in no position to help are now enjoying teamwork and doing good to others, restoring homes for grateful families while adding skills to their resume. They completed a roofing job in Middletown, constructed a shed in Union Beach, removed a deck from a foundation in Clifton Beach to prepare for elevating the house ten feet, and did demolition of a house beyond repair in Keansburg so the homeowner could construct a new dwelling. When worksites are not too far away, CALTR utilizes Community Church of Keyport to warm up and eat lunch, thanks to the church’s lunchtime feeding program. Consistory is active in identifying houses for CALTR to repair and in offering CALTR’s help to homeowners. Middlebush Reformed Church recently provided a work team of pastor and congregants to construct the rafters for roofing a house in Union Beach, and has organized a drywall team to contribute their skills periodically. Metuchen Reformed Church is set to accommodate and provide meals to a weeklong team that will be arriving from an out-of-state church. Colts Neck Reformed Church sent seven volunteers to the Interfaith Day of Service CALTR held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, joined by two Muslim volunteers from a local Turkish community, five members of Reformed Church of Highland Park, and two volunteers through WorkFirst NJ. With teamwork among our churches, leadership by CALTR’s staff and steering committee, and administrative support from our CDC, CALTR takes our Classis of New Brunswick to new heights of giving neighborly love to those who can use it. Email caltr2015@gmail.com to participate.

Air Trampoline Sports Aberdeen and Breast Intentions NJ Partner in the Fight Against Breast Cancer Air Trampoline Sports and Breast Intentions are proud to partner for the first time in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The trampoline park’s Aberdeen location is pledging a portion of its October sales to Breast Intentions NJ, supporting their national mission to provide health education and crisis intervention for women facing breast cancer. “A big part of our philosophy at Air Trampoline Sports is promoting the health and well-being of our community,” said owner Ken Stone. “Breast Intentions does a tremendous amount of work fighting breast cancer. They make a huge difference in the lives of so many patients and families affected by the disease. We’re very proud to be a part of their campaign.” You can get involved and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer simply by jumping at Air Trampoline Sports in October. Along with the satisfaction of supporting a great cause, you’ll receive a pink Breast Cancer Awareness bracelet for any additional contribution of $1 or more. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast
cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the US, other than skin cancer. There are an estimated 231,840 new invasive cases in women in 2015 alone. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer. The ACS also reports that being overweight or obese is linked with an increased risk of cancers of the breast (among women after menopause). They also report that people who get moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity are at a lower risk of developing several cancers, including those of the breast. Along with diet, exercise and limited alcohol and tobacco consumption, regular screenings can often find breast cancer early when treatments are more likely to be successful. “Most people are already aware of breast cancer, but a lot forget the important step of having an early detection plan,” said Stone. “We hope this partnership will encourage our jumpers and community to be active and learn more about breast cancer and breast cancer prevention.”
ABOUT AIR TRAMPOLINE SPORTS Located on 111 State Route 35 in Cliffwood, Air Trampoline Sports has 18,000 square feet of trampolines, including four foam pit lanes, three slam dunk basketball lanes, three unique 3D dodgeball courts, a high jump platform and a gymnastics performance track. There are no specific age restrictions for jumpers and all sessions have a designated kid’s area. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the park. The park has concessions, plenty of seating areas and an arcade for all to enjoy. For more information visit www.airtrampolinesports.com/aberdeen ABOUT BREAST INTENTIONS Breast Intentions (formerly Breast Friends Forever) is a 501(c) (3) charitable fundraising organization based in NJ with chapters in NY and IL. Conceived by cancer survivors Erika Rech and Mike Ruane, they hope to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families who have been affected by breast cancer as well. Their goal is to raise money and distribute it to families fighting breast cancer, providing monetary support for things ranging from wigs and prosthetics to medication and transportation. The organization also provides advice and support for things like insurance issues, treatment experiences and support groups. For more information visit www.breastintentions.org

Students returned to Keyport Central School this September to two new administrative faces: Erik Mammano, promoted to principal, and Elijah Pereira, newly appointed assistant principal. They replace Anthony Rapolla and Kevin Flynn, respectively, both of whom accepted other positions within the Keyport school district. According to Keyport Board of Education Superintendent Lisa Savoia: “Their intentions are to help Keyport Public Schools in providing and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe learning environment that allows our students to flourish and excel. They are committed to working with the school community in order to ensure the success of all children in the classrooms.” Formerly, Mammano was assistant principal at Keyport High School for the past three years. His diverse 15-year career includes jobs as a social studies teacher, coach, advisor and mentor. He lives in Ocean Township with his wife, an elementary school teacher, and has three children under 8. Pereira was previously dean of students for the Ewing School District in N.J. Trilingual in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Elijah is married to a special-education teacher and has a three-year-old daughter. “[Both men] believe that input and collaboration within the community are essential,” says Savoia. “They have an open-door policy and welcome questions, concerns or ideas. Changes…will be demonstrated by increased student achievement.”

Tighten Your Laces for Holmdel First Aid Squad’s 2nd Annual “Run For The Rig 5K”
Animal Advocacy: Managing Community Cats PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN NJ STATE DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
Holmdel First Aid Squad (HFAS) will hold its second annual 5k race on the Bell Works Property, located at 101 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel on October 17, 2015 with a start time of 9:30 a.m. “Our goal this year is to duplicate last year’s event, but make it even better,” said Holmdel First Aid Squad’s President Michael Nikolis. “This year we were able to secure Bell Works as our venue, and excited for the local population to get a preview of what this landmark has the potential to be.” The 5k will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. and run until 11:00 a.m. Participants and supporters should arrive at least a half hour early to prep and find parking. Those interested are strongly urged to pre-register for the race. Registration information for the 5k can be found at www. holmdelfirstaidsquad.org. Onsite registration will be available as well. Runner’s registration fee is $25. Event timing will be conducted by Viper Timing. Any questions regarding this event or those wishing to be an event sponsor/vendor, contact HFAS Administration President Michael Nikolis or Secretary Kyle McCartney via e-mail at holmdelfas5k@gmail.com.
citizens or nonprofit organizations perform that service. • Decreasing municipal costs of housing and euthanizing community cats. • Decreasing public safety concerns because TNR programs vaccinate cats against rabies.
MANAGING COMMUNITY CATS (feral and stray) can be a complex issue that concerns many municipal leaders and agencies mandated to serve and protect the public. Decades of trapping and removing these cats, with an almost guaranteed lethal outcome, have failed to reduce their numbers or improve the quality of life for cats or citizens. In addition, these strategies are costly to sustain and enforce, and they are generally unpopular with citizens. Policies intended to regulate pet cats and their owners do not work to reduce community cat populations who already exist outdoors and do not have “owners” in the traditional sense. Likewise, reactive, punitive strategies such as feeding bans have proven ineffective at managing community cats time and time again because it is impractical to think we can eliminate other sources of food – dumpsters, garbage cans, and rodents – which may have originally attracted cats to the area; enforcement is costly, difficult, and unpopular with the majority of citizens; and nothing is harder than trying to stop caring people from feeding cats in need. Instead, the HSUS supports strategic, nonlethal management of community cats who already exist outdoors through sterilization and vaccination efforts such as Trap-NeuterReturn (TNR). The goal of TNR is to reduce and eventually eliminate the number of community cats, as well as the nuisance behaviors and public health concerns associated with them. When TNR is conducted strategically and supported by municipal leaders and organizations, caring individuals who feed hungry cats can be mobilized to go beyond feeding to providing intervention services such as sterilization and vaccination. TNR programs have many benefits, including: • Decreasing municipal costs incurred by trapping community cats because private

• Decreasing nuisance complaints because spayed and neutered cats are less likely to fight over mates, food, and territory. Neutering also eliminates the pungent odor of male cat urine and decreases cat roaming. • Reducing or eliminating continued reproduction, which decreases the population of unowned outdoor cats and the transmission of feline diseases, which are largely spread through mating behavior and mating-related fighting. • Reducing predation on wildlife. Our publication, “Managing Community Cats: A Guide for Municipal Leaders,” as well as the many other resources on community cat management, provide information to give communities a roadmap and tool set for achieving joint goals. In addition to managing community cats, it is important to share information with pet owners about: spaying and neutering pet cats before they can reproduce at five months of age; keeping pet cats indoors, safely confined to their property, or walked on a harness and leash; and providing visible identification, so if pet cats go missing they can be reunited with their owners. These actions will help stem the tide of community cat overpopulation at its source. There are many free resources online, including studies and data about the effectiveness of TNR, as well as model ordinance language and other information. We hope you will consider reaching out to your town administrators to ensure your community is a healthier and safer place for people, cats, and wildlife. Our organization would welcome the opportunity to help create an effective and fiscally-responsible strategy for a community cat management program in your neighborhood. Visit www.humanesociety.org/ outdoorcats or www.animalsheltering.org/ communitycatsguide for more information.

Keyport Historical Society Gets New Home STORY LIZZ DINNIGAN
After the devastating loss of its waterfront Steamboat Dock Museum – a casualty of Superstorm Sandy – the Keyport Historical Society (KHS) is poised to make a big comeback with a brand new home. The Victorian Old Tea Cottage at 34 Main Street in Keyport will soon be converted into a 1,939-square-foot historical museum, thanks to a significant grant received by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). KHS is the only nonmunicipality as an entity that applied for Sandy grants to benefit the boro. “The KHS is on the last leg of a long journey to establish a museum in Keyport,” says Tom Gallo, board member and three times past president of the KHS. “One of the key benchmarks was reached last week when the owners signed a contract to sell the property to us. That document was needed to qualify for the grant from the NJEDA. Now the Society needs to go through the process of purchasing the property formally, which can be tedious, especially with the restrictions that come with grants.” The future museum also has a heated support building (garage) that will be used for housing and restoring artifacts. The time table
Preserving, Displaying and Collecting “The main building is already a quaint, attractive Victorian two-story, wood-frame home, complete with decorative trim,” says Gallo. “It will become the centerpiece for displaying the town’s rich history, keeping with the flavor of Keyport. In addition to saved pieces and artifacts, technology will play a big part in both educational and display formats. We will not have the 90 feet of wall display space like we did at the Steamboat Dock Museum, so we will implement screens whereby a visitor can select a subject, such as the oyster industry, and view many images. Very likely, the Society will be gifted many items never seen before, helping to build a new collection of historical pieces from our town.” There will still be photographs adorning the walls, as well as a printing press from Keyport Weekly, the original deed of the town of Keyport from 1830, family-related documents, clothing, housewares and whatever else was salvaged from the Steamboat Dock Museum. The town owned the Steamboat Dock Museum for 40 years and leased it from the borough for $1, Gallo says. The society owned the artifacts but the borough owned the museum. Since Sandy, the duplicate and saved artifacts have been safely held at members’ homes, a purchased Pod, the Keyport Fire Museum and at the Monmouth County Historical Association storage facility. Most events, including the popular “Coffee and Dessert Show & Tell” – at which members and residents bring historical artifacts to share with the attendees – will now be held at the new museum. The major fundraisers will continue to take place at Keyport Yacht Club. “As soon as the property is purchased, KHS will be looking for new members who wish to assist in establishing Keyport’s second historical museum,” says Gallo.
