W NovemberFest Colts Neck Parents Toast Fall with NovemberFest Tasting Event

ith the school year in full swing, Colts Neck parents took some time out to relax and raise their glasses at the Colts Neck PTO’s Inaugural NovemberFest Tasting event on November 21, 2014. Over a hundred parents mixed and mingled at Bucks Mill Community Center while tasting wine, beer, and spirits and enjoying live music from The Itch. The tasting theme of the evening was the brainchild of NovemberFest Chair Tara Buss. “We wanted an event for parents to socialize and get to know one another better,” explained Buss. “A tasting event seemed like the perfect setting to bring people together to meet and sample some new spirits.” Buss reached out to Neil Patel, owner of Colts Neck Wine and Liquor, to help bring her idea to life. Patel and his staff were happy to participate, and partnered with Buss and the PTO to plan the evening. Patel sourced fifteen different vendors for the event, offering over 100 different beverages to sample. Each guest received a souvenir NovemberFest tasting glass to try the variety of beverages, which included craft beers, spirits and wines from around the world. The Itch, a popular local band, graciously donated their talents to entertain the crowd and rock the night away. The cover band features Colts Neck’s own Michael Pisani on guitar and vocals, joined by Greg Messina on vocals/keyboard, Scott Borbely on lead guitar, Jeff Mundy on bass and Jeff Amorosi on drums. “The Itch really made the event with their amazing talent – they rocked,” said Buss. In addition to the tasting, the evening featured appetizers and a buffet dinner by Aleo Italian Specialties of Lincroft and a dessert bar by Chef Steph of Colts Neck and Cake & Co. of Teaneck. Guests could also participate in a cork pull to win some spirits to take home, a gift basket raffle, and a 50/50. The Buck’s Mill Community Center was transformed into an elegant event space for the evening. Beautiful seasonal floral arrangements by The Colts Neck Greenhouse Florist adorned the tables and harvest décor from Slope Brook Farm provided a festive touch. Strategically placed lighting, courtesy of Raymond Raya, Esq. through “Lighting the Shows” created a soft ambiance for guests. Buss was assisted by a dedicated group of volunteers including: Carrie Benevento, Elizabeth Besculides, Christy Grant, Elyse Kakos, Eileen Kapp, Marci Klein, Nancy Loureiro, Jessica Mangold, Virginia Marshall, Sarah Pisani, Patricia Ronca, and Heather Tormey. Also contributing to the night’s success were Justine Buzzetta, Marian Castner, Danielle Gibson, Anthony Kapp, Courtney McCormick, Nancy Morin, Jennifer Mundy, Sheila Olt, Diane Pastor, Patricia Pecoraro, Colleen Procyk and Ellen Schauer. “Although the primary purpose of this event was to get our parents together and socialize, the evening raised over $2,000 to benefit the children of the Colts Neck Schools,” said

Justine Buzzetta, PTO President. “We are thrilled to be able to fund many exciting educational programs and learning initiatives for students.” The PTO recently donated 110 new Chromebook laptops to Cedar Drive Middle School and funded over $18,000 in educational programs and trips for the three Colts Neck schools this year. “The PTO is truly grateful to Neil Patel and the staff of

Colts Neck Wine & Liquor for sponsoring this event,” added Buzzetta. “We could not have done it without their help. We are so proud of the community support we continue to receive from Colts Neck businesses” The success of the evening has Buss already thinking of next year. “We are hoping to make this an annual event, with even more parents and vendors joining us for the next NovemberFest,” noted Buss, “It was a fantastic night!”

HOLMDEL RESIDENT JULIANNA DRAPKIN IS

STATE GYMNAST OF THE YEAR

S

ixteen-year-old Julianna Drapkin, a Junior at Holmdel High School, was awarded the title of State Gymnast of the Year at the 2014 NJSIAA individual state championships held at Montgomery High School on November 15. To qualify for all-around individual states, a 36.0/40.0 all-around score is needed; or placement in the Top 5. Vault, bars, beam, and floor must be completed in order to qualify. Drapkin’s all-around score was 38.0. “I started gymnastics when I was two-years-old and loved it,” said Drapkin. “When I was about three-yearsold, I ran away from my Mom during a Mommy and Me gymnastics class and just did a front flip into the foam pit. I have always been pretty daring and the type of person to just go for new skills.” A love of gymnastics combined with the determination to excel at this sport has allowed Drapkin to overcome some difficult setbacks. Though she injured her legs in March while on vault during the USAG Level 10 State championships, Drapkin was determined to return to the sport she loves. “I had to be home-schooled at first because I was in a wheelchair after breaking my tibia and ankle.” She was injured just before moving to Holmdel from Aberdeen last March. Drapkin attended Bishop Ahr High School in Edison during her freshman and most of her sophomore year. She was able to attend Holmdel High School in May

12

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

of last school year. Drapkin explained what she had to do in order to move forward for the NJSIAA finals. “To get healthy I first needed to completely rest my legs. Once cleared by my doctor, I needed to do daily physical therapy and conditioning to regain my strength and flexibility.” Liz Porter, who is Drapkin’s gymnastics coach, said, “Shortly after we learned Julianna was transferring to Holmdel, we heard she had broken one ankle and fractured the other. When Julianna first arrived, she was just coming back to the sport. She only did bars and a simple floor routine in the first few meets. By mid-season, Julianna was able to compete on beam and finally towards the end of the season she was strong enough to vault. She did well in the post season meets, (that would be the Shore Conference, Central 1 Sectionals and NJSIAA Team State Meet). But everything came together on the day of Individual States. Julianna

Congratulations Julianna! had a near perfect meet and threw out her hardest skills, including back handspring back layout on beam and double pike on floor. She was absolutely amazing that day despite painful shin splints.” Drapkin was the first freshman in over a decade to receive the NJSIAA all-around title as State Gymnast of the Year in 2012. She shared why winning the title again in 2014 was like a dream come true. “I was thrilled when I won in 2012, but this year was even more exciting because I never thought I would be able to come back from my injury this fast. It was an amazing feeling when I realized what I had accomplished.” She is grateful to her coach for the encouragement she provides. “I love my coach, Liz. She is the most compassionate and caring coach I have ever had. I

am able to relax and just perform at my best during competitions with her because she cares less about winning, and more about us having fun.” Family and friends continued to encourage Drapkin throughout this year. “My family didn’t expect this any more than I did, but they always believed that I could achieve it again if I set my mind on getting healthy and doing my best. My friends were also very proud and supportive of me.” Drapkin is honored to receive her title. “I feel very grateful to have been awarded State Gymnast of the Year, and this time it is even more special to me after all I went through to get to this point.”

he students of Village School Elementary in Holmdel demonstrated that even a Nor’easter would not keep them from ensuring the safe delivery of holiday gifts and toys for the “Operation Sleighbells” collection drive for Monmouth County’s Family and Children’s Services. For the past ten years, Jami Kenney, a second grade teacher at Village School, has organized the “Giving Tree” initiative, working with students at Village School. Each November, students who choose to participate pick a wish list to go shopping for a child in the Monmouth County area. On December 9, Mrs. Kenney, along with Maria Campillay, Jenn Reddy, Principal Brian Schillaci, Assistant Principal Jessica Vierschilling and the Parent School Association Executive Board stuffed the Family and Children’s Services “sleigh” with gifts, toys and clothes for more than 500 children! Mrs. Kenney was excited to report that the amount of gifts collected each year continues to grow, and that “all of the students who participated were excited to do so, and took their responsibility to fulfill the wishes of other children very seriously.” Mrs. Kenney also noted that initiatives like this provide teachable moments for her students. “The Giving Tree provides an opportunity

for my students to learn the importance of helping and caring for others, which is an essential component of Village School’s character education curriculum. The students learn the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants.’ This year was the largest collection yet!” Mr. Schillaci noted that the Giving Tree program demonstrates how “the Village School community -- staff, students and parents -- are tremendously generous with their time. What is special about this event is that the students are directly involved in the process, providing an opportunity for them to learn the value of being good citizens. I am very proud of all the students who were involved with this very worthy cause.” In addition to the Operation Sleighbells donations, students also donated more than $3,000 in gift cards for The Ashley Lauren Foundation, which assists families in New Jersey who are dealing with the battle of pediatric cancer. Finally, the Parent Student Association organized the collection of coats for children in the area in need of a winter coat. The Village School families rallied and donated more than 60 coats in a short period of time which will be given to the BRIDGES at the Shore program.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

Colts Neck Friends of the Library Held 15th Annual Fine Art Show

The 15th Annual Fine Art Show and Sale, sponsored by the Colts Neck Friends of the Library, got off to an exciting start on December 5 with a Wine Tasting Preview Party, which was made possible through the generous donations of wine by 4JG’s Winery in Colts Neck. This was enhanced by food pairings donated by local restaurants: Perkins, Han Jiang, Subway, Green Meadow Inn and Colts Neck Inn. An additional highlight was chocolate samplings paired to the wines created by Chocolate Legends Sherri Hiller, also a Colts Neck local. Beautiful holiday music was provided by Maggie Tripold, music director of The Colts Neck Reformed Church. Over 20 Colts Neck artists exhibited and the artists generously donate a percentage of sales to the Friends for library programs. A variety of media was displayed by Colts Neck professional artists. Local watercolor artist Carol O’Scanlon, donated a framed painting as a raffle prize, in addition to having other works of art on display. Others included long-time resident Muriel Rogers, watercolor and oil paintings; Tony and Carol Rustako, photography; Paul Lenz, photography; Marilyn Baldi, photography; Ellen O’Dwyer, watercolors and acrylics; Catherine Love, watercolors and pastels; John Rodeck, acrylics; Ariana

Vig, watercolors; Mary Beth Ober, oil paintings; Mary Ellen Griffin, oil painting; Richard Salls, photography; Carl Johnson, carvings; and newcomers Lin Fong-O’Neill, oil paintings; and Angie Morfogen, decorative pottery masks. Many thanks to the co-chairs for their time and efforts coordinating this event in addition to their artistic contributions: Mil Wexler-Kobrinski’s wheel thrown pottery and Eileen Petruch’s oil paintings. Visitors sampled wine and food in addition to feasting their eyes on a wide variety of media and styles of art work. This year, in addition to the usual weekend hours, gallery viewing times were extended to weekday evenings, to give a greater opportunity to view the show. A special thank you to Michele Batista, co-president of the Friends of the Library, who did a great deal behind the scenes, the other board members, and the Librarian, Stephanie Laurino, for their time and support. The Colts Neck Library was built on donations by towns people, and thanks to the support of these wonderful artists and you, we can keep it growing and thriving! Please consider joining the Friends of the Library by contacting The Colts Neck Library at 732.431.5656.

A cancer diagnosis is a life changing moment for both the patient and their family. Through Meridian Cancer Care’s free Patient Navigation Service, patients and families have access to an invaluable resource in their nurse navigator, who can help answer questions about tests and diagnostics, coordinate treatment and follow-up care, assist with making appointments, and provide information on everything from support groups to medical insurance. When Jill Generelli, RN started as a nurse navigator at Bayshore Community Hospital in the fall of 2014 she was fully prepared to support and guide her patients through their cancer diagnosis. However, even she didn’t know how much of a positive impact she would be to her patients in the coming months. Jill’s first patient was a Howell man by the name of Paul Allen suffering from stage four colon cancer. Due to complications with his insurance, Paul was unable to receive medication to help his nausea and stomach pain. By working with the pharmaceutical supplier, Jill was able to connect him to the help he needed. After Paul started chemotherapy, he had many questions for Jill about his care, all of which she was there to answer. But Jill’s commitment extended far beyond Paul’s clinical care when she learned Paul needed a new home. “Our apartment at the time had a serious mold and mildew problem,” says Paul. “That environment was not helping me recover. We needed to move.” Jill knew first hand just how difficult this time had been for Paul and his loved ones; she was determined to find a way to help.

Jill met with Paul and helped him through the process of applying for disability. However, Paul would need extra help if he was going to find a suitable place to live. According to Jill “I reached out to David’s Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation of Manahawkin and the RAINE foundation in Hazlet, two local organizations started by cancer survivors.” Both David’s Dream and RAINE understood Paul’s situation, and generously supplied enough money for his security deposit and first month’s rent. “I am so thankful we had Jill to help us through this time,” says Paul. “She was an absolute blessing.” Thanks to Jill’s dedication, Paul was able to receive the medical help he needed, as well as a livable home for the holidays. Additionally, with the help of Dr. Chen and Meridian Cancer Care, Paul has seen incredible progress with his cancer treatment. Holmdel Girl Scouts Collect Food for Lunch Break

Local Florist Held Workshop for Young Girl Scouts

Holmdel Girl Scouts Daisy Troop #120 held a neighborhood food collection in November for Lunch Break, pictured is: Ella Mae Buerkle, Isabella Buffa, Ella Burgess, Preeya Chen, Avery Dubin, Olivia Dubin, Sarah Eknoian, Kyla Kidorf, Julia McAulay, Ava Rizzuto, Isabella Spicer and Christina Xenakis.

Holmdel Girl Scouts Daisy Troop #120 held a Neighborhood Food Collection on November 17, 2014. The troop, consisting of first grade girls who attend Village Elementary School, cheerfully collected food in red wagons throughout Holmdel neighborhoods. In total, they collected from 15 houses in the Valley Point Drive/Morse Way area of Holmdel. The girls were able to donate 28 full bags of food for Thanksgiving to Lunch Break in Red Bank. Each girl created and delivered handmade thank you cards for each participant. This project helped the girls to earn their Sunny the Sunflower “friendly and helpful” Daisy Petal. The Food Collection was also part of the Troop’s larger Take Action Project for Girl Scouts to help combat hunger in our local community. The girls plan to make this an annual event and expand the collection to other neighborhoods in Holmdel next year.

LINCROFT FIRE COMPANY AND FIRST AID BENEFIT FROM PASTA NIGHT Lincroft Fire Company and Lincroft First Aid both benefited from the annual Pasta Night held at the Lincroft Inn on November 18, 2014. Thanks to the attendance of family, friends and members of the community, who generously supported the event, each organization received a little over $500 each.

Troop 928 from Colts Neck, whose leaders are Annemarie Zeni and Kelli Petino, visited local florist The Greenhouse Gallery where the girls created holiday arrangements for their families. The girl scouts received a wealth of information about, you guessed it, flowers! The workshop for the troop was tailored to the age and ability of the scouts, and started with a tour of the shop. While touring, the scouts learned about why the coolers in the shop are important, why they are maintained at a constant temperature of 42 degrees F, what types of flowers are kept in the coolers and more. Next was a short lesson on the types of flowers that are in the coolers and shop. They learned about the flowers that are most popular for Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. The designers then teach the girls about the origin of the flowers in the shop, how they arrive, what they look like when they come in, and finally how to process them to be ready for the customer and designing. The best part of the workshop follows the tour. The Girl Scouts got to hold and squeeze dry floral foam and then they are handed the wet fully soaked floral foam. The squeals always delight the designers and Girl Scout leaders alike as the wet floral foam is heavy and filled with water and squeezing it causes many puddles all around. Then there is a demonstration of how the tools of the trade are used - floral knives, clippers and guillotine-like stem chopper. The workshop then moves on to basic floral design – such as how to use greens to build an arrangement and then the placement of the flowers to create an appealing design. If you are interested in having your group schedule a workshop with The Greenhouse Gallery Florist, you can reach them at 732.866.6669.

olts Neck Township Education Association (CNTEA) held their first-ever Open House at Conover Road Primary Conference on December 10. The event, Snow Much Fun, was an amazing success. Well over 100 Colts Neck parents and their children arrived for the two-hour event. The CNTEA sponsored the event as a way to support The Valerie Fund, which provides health care services for children with cancer and blood disorders. Donations collected at the door included board games, new children’s DVDs, and gift cards up to $25. Once inside the cafeteria, the children were encouraged to visit the many stations that offered card designing, creating gift tags, making snow globes, and decorating cookies. The little ones were delighted as they played the Snowball Toss and Pin the Nose on the Snowman games. Sandwiches and hot chocolate were served, which both adults and children enjoyed. mary, Elementary, and Middle schools performed several holiday favorites, as well as leading the children and adults in many sing-a-longs. ESL teacher Karin Londono, who was the contact for this event, noted, “We are part of a very caring community. This was a great afternoon getting all members of our school community together and supporting The Valerie Fund as well.” She explained that the CNTEA plans to hold three big fundraisers this year. This one, a Dr. Seuss’ Read Across America event in March, and a Support Our Troops event in May. Conover Road Elementary School Guidance Counselor Lauren Hums added, “This was an awesome event. Teachers came to help set up before the event and the Art teachers decorated the room. We received so much help from everyone.” Colts Neck PBA members, who were on hand to greet everyone, made a generous donation to The Valerie Fund.

low calories. They simply offer astonishingly flavorful, mouth-watering and often decadent treats. Experience the delectable flavors that you might want to enhance with your favorite BYOB wines. Maybe the French crepe, a wonderful combination of ham, brie cheese and raspberry jam, or the Chicken Pesto crepe, with mozzarella cheese and roasted peppers. Or, for the more diet conscious, maybe the Veggie crepe, a combination of goat cheese, spinach, mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes. All of the Savory crepes are served with a side salad topped with vinaigrette dressing. And, then just as you are remarking about how delicious these or other choices are, you have to try at least one Sweet Crepe and bring your taste buds up to an even higher level. If you’re feeling very French by this time, you can, of course, choose a traditional French Crepes Suzette, made from Grand Marnier, sugar and orange marmalade. Or you may want to try one of the house favorites that include the Classic, with fresh strawberries, bananas and Nutella (or, if you prefer, the new taste sensation, cookie butter). You might think about the S’mores Crepes, filled with marshmallow, chocolate chips and graham cracker crumbs or, maybe the aromatic Apple Pie crepe with caramel sauce and cinnamon. And there are plenty more to choose from. Now, think of all of these temptations and what a fantastic addition they could be to your next party. What’s coming up? Birthdays, engagements, weddings, baby showers, communions, bar and bat mitzvahs, sweet 16s, corporate parties? Food is the key to every successful, memorable party. Think of how this might work for you.

A whole lot easier—and cheaper—than packing your guests off to Paris. Just talk to Erica and Nick and they’ll show up with everything you need. Except, of course, the Eiffel Tower! Whipped is located at 6 Monmouth Street in Red Bank, you can reach them at 732.747.0076, check them out online at www.whippedcreperie.com, “like” them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

IS WORTH A TRIP OF A LIFETIME Colts Neck Resident Wins Grand Prize in Instagram Photo Contest STORY MICHELLE TUCHOL

Mike Quinn, 29, of Colts Neck is not a professional photographer. Currently, he is a Courier Supervisor at TD Bank. But take a look at his prize-winning shot overlooking the Grand Canyon, and you’d think otherwise. ational Geographic’s online community “Your Shot” and Emirates Airlines sponsored an Instagram photo contest titled “ViewFromAboveContest” (#viewfromabove) that ran from the beginning of September 2014 to the end of October 2014. Submissions needed to be aerial in perspective, without being shot from buildings, mountains or rooftops.

“It had to be from an airplane, helicopter or hot air balloon,” Mike explained. Mike was notified that he won the contest on November 10, but it was not publicly advertised until November 20, 2014. Now he looks forward to the Grand Prize of a 13day excursion touring some of the most diverse areas of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. He plans to take his father, Vinny; the two hope to travel late 2015 or early 2016 to avoid monsoon season.

Mike Quinn, a Colts Neck resident, won the grand prize, which includes a trip of a lifetime, in National Geographic’s Instagram contest - #ViewFromAboveContest.

The photo that won Mike Quinn and his father, Vinny, a trip of a lifetime that includes a 13-day excursion touring some of the most diverse areas of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. Mike took this photo of the Grand Canyon on his flight to Las Vegas.

The itinerary of the expedition will take Mike and Vinny through the marketplaces and villages of Hanoi; biking through garden districts of Hue and ancient temples of Cambodia; exploring the caves and waterfalls while in Louangphrabang, Laos; and kayaking along Ha Long Bay. “There are a few things in particular that I am looking forward to seeing,” Mike said. “In Cambodia, there is a legendary temple called Angkor Wat, which is the largest religious monument in the world and its symbol is on the Cambodian flag. Another is a cruise on Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, which looks absolutely beautiful. In general, I am just excited to experience the cultural differences in Southeast Asia.” Initially, he thought the chances of winning were slim. “I only had one aerial photo in my collection of pictures, and submitting was unlimited for the duration of the contest.” Over 17,000 submissions were uploaded to #viewfromabove. Mike’s

photo of the Grand Canyon seemed to resonate with Dan Westergren, Director of Photography and one of the judges at National Geographic, as stated on the contest page’s website: “I’m an absolutely committed window seat flyer. Without the ever-changing view, I feel the claustrophobia settle down on me like a cloud. So, when I heard Mike Quinn’s story about his winning shot I had to smile. He was dozing off on a flight en route to Las Vegas when the captain came on the speaker, telling everyone to look out the window. He woke up and snapped a few photos of the Grand Canyon set off in perfect relief by the waning sunlight.” Mike has thought about a making a career using photography, but enjoys it as a hobby for now. His interests lie in natural landscape photography. He also added that before the contest, he didn’t use Instagram, but now sees it as a useful tool to showcase his photography. Locally, he helps Danny Sanchez, who has a studio in Red Bank where

he assists with fundraising events, weddings and studio photo shoots. As for the trip, Mike plans to take his Nikon D5000 and Kodak Easyshare super-zoom camera. Since some portions of the expedition will have Mike and Vinny actively traveling, they plan on buying a GoPro video camera so no footage will be missed. “I also would like to thank National Geographic and Emirate Airlines for sponsoring this contest.” Mike had some great advice for local photographers. For those who are looking to win contents or get published by National Geographic, Mike said to check regularly on the site. “Your Shot” can be found on National Geographic’s home page under “Photography.” “They have all kinds of contests, assignments, and may request your photos to be for sale on their stock website National Geographic Creative.” Congratulations, Mike!

ENTREPRENEURSHIP ALIVE & WELL IN COLTS NECK Colts Neck Residents Open New Bagel Shop

Owners of The Bagel Store Sean Polito (left) & Chris DeSaye welcome locals to come in, relax and enjoy great food!

Owners of the new bagel and deli shop in Colts Neck – The Bagel Store - truly have come full circle. What started as part time jobs for Chris DeSaye and Sean Polito as teenagers in the former bagel shop, has culminated in owning and running all aspects of the business. Their enthusiasm for this venture and their energy is noticeable immediately and The Bagel Store is sure to become a favorite destination for breakfast, lunch and of course, bagels! A LOST ART IS PRESERVED Even as teenagers, Chris and Sean had pride in their work. The former owner noticed this and Sean was instructed in the fading art of hand rolling bagels. (When a vendor recently asked to see the bagel machine, Chris had to laugh and pointed at Sean and explained, “He’s the machine.”) Sean then taught Chris to bake and the team was fortified. When Sean left for college and Chris entered an entirely different field, the two still found themselves teaming up for other jobs along the way. Sean mentioned that every time he found a job, he managed to bring Chris on board. They knew they worked well together and they both missed the kitchen and the customers. BAR NAPKIN BUSINESS PLAN When Sean finished college, it was Chris’s turn to bring Sean in on a plan. The two often met socially and found themselves toying with ideas about working together again. Inevitably, their conversations would turn to discussing ideas for a bagel shop and scribbling notes on bar napkins. Then, a serendipitous call came from one of the past regular clients, telling Chris the bagel shop in Colts Neck was for sale. Although they had considered other locations, they knew that opening in Colts Neck would be like coming home. In August, this impressive team negotiated all the terms on their own, redecorated, and got the shop up in running - all in 90 days! Chris DeSaye and Sean Polito are excited to meet new customers and reconnect with those returning. They welcome the chance to have you come in, relax and enjoy great food. The Bagel Store is located at 340 Highway 34 South (Orchards Plaza) in Colts Neck, they can be reached at 732.414.2330.

Daniela’s Wish Hosted Pajama & Toy Drive Benefitting Local Hospitals Local non-profit Daniela’s Wish brought smiles to families in our community this holiday season by hosting their 1st annual Pajama & Toy Drive on November 19, 2014. The event brought close to 100 attendees to Matisse in Belmar (who graciously donated their restaurant space). Daniela’s Wish, along with ABC Networking group, held the event to benefit local hospitals, including Jersey Shore Children’s Hospital, Monmouth Medical Center and CentraState Hospital, all of with whom Daniela’s Wish has a partnership with. The event was a huge success for Daniela’s Wish, resulting in 80 pairs of pajamas and over 100 new toys. In addition, Barnes & Noble of Paramus, made a huge donation to the event, which resulted in thousands of toys for Daniela to distribute this year. Daniela Olt, a twelve-year-old from Colts Neck, said that her mission is to grant wishes, helping create smiles and memories for kids that are ill or have suffered tragedy. Daniela visits each hospital three times a year, delivering new toys and pajamas to children. Daniela said it’s an

amazing feeling when you can truly make a difference in someone’s life, she said, “I feel really good about myself when I get hugs, thank you letters and get to see the smiles on the kids’ faces when they see Daniela’s Wish coming with things they wished for, or new toys for them to have while they are in the hospital.” To learn more about Daniela’s Wish, visit www. danielaswish.org and “Like” them on Facebook to follow all they are doing. Colts Neck Troop 290 Visits Annapolis In November, BSA Troop 290 of Colts Neck went on a camping trip to Maryland to see the Navy vs. Georgia Southern football game. They toured the campus of the Naval Academy, and got a closer look inside the school and saw how the midshipmen live, where they work and train. The guide, who is one of the students, showed the scouts how the campus runs from class timing to drills. Scouts had an entertaining and educational experience seeing how these soon-to-be officers live and learn. Although it was very cold outside, walking through the huge campus of the Naval Academy with its bronze statues and marble hallways was an amazing sight for the scouts. When the scouts arrived at the football stadium, they made their way through the crowd and got an awesome spot on a grass hill directly behind the goal post! Before the game started, the Naval Academy companies (groups of students

assigned to a certain task such as firing the cannon every morning to wake up the students) marched out on the field in rectangular formations. In total about 20 companies, each with 20-50 students marched on the field, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and walked into the stands to find seats. Once the game started, the scouts learned that after each Navy touchdown the leaders of the companies run behind the goal post and do one push-up for every point that Navy scored. This was an interesting sight. After a fun night the game ended with Navy defeating Georgia Southern, 52-19. The company leaders did a lot of push-ups! Overall it was a really fun and exciting trip, another of the many great trips that Troop 290 has been on. The Troop has more exciting trips planned for coming months such as, a day trip to Philadelphia to see Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, Winterburg at Forestburg, ski trip to Camelback, canoeing on the Delaware and many more. On each trip, the scouts learn leadership and other life skills in a fun and responsible way. Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. You can join at any time. Please send an email to Join@Troop290.com and the troop will respond back. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, check out their website, www.Pack90NJ.com, or send an email to Join@pack90nj.com. For information on Venture Crew 290, for young men and women from ninth grade through age 20, please contact Vicki Sherman at 732.308.9820 or Sherman_05@yahoo.com.

Oak Hill Academy’s Student Council annually collects donations of hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to decorate their tree and give to needy organizations over the holidays.

Another holiday season marks another opportunity for the Student Council at Oak Hill Academy to help those who are less fortunate. It is extremely important and beneficial for students to be given opportunities where they help individuals who come from difficult walks of life. The Student Council has recently held a holiday food and gift drive in which students donate thoughtful items to brighten the lives of others. Each grade or grades were each given a specific charity to focus on for the holiday drive. Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade have donated to Toys for Tots while the second and third grade classes have given to Operation Sleigh Bells. The fourth graders were allocated to help 180 Turning Lives Around, and the Oak Hill Academy’s fifth graders helped out Bridges at the Shore. Oak Hill sixth and seventh grades donated to Holiday Express; while the eighth graders all focused on Operation Shoebox. These donated items ranged from toys, books and blankets to coats and cooking sets. In addition to these groups, the Annual Mitten Tree was up in the Upper School hallway growing new sets of mittens, gloves and hats for the less fortunate as well. These experiences have allowed the students at Oak Hill Academy to grow into thoughtful individuals who are not only aware of the difficulties families go through, but how to help them find holiday cheer. Thank you to Mrs. Linda Vacca and Mr. Matt Goldfarb, Student Council Moderators, and their executive board as well as all of the students and their families at Oak Hill Academy who helped to make this act of community service a success.

Pasta Feast Fundraiser for Holmdel Resident Timmy McDonnell ABOVE: Friends and teammates of Matthew McDonnell, Timmy’s brother, arrived to support him and his parents during the Pasta Feast fundraiser (Matthew is fourth from the left.)

F

riends of the McDonnell Family held a Good Old Fashioned Pasta Feast on November 23, 2014 at Holmdel High School Commons to benefit the Fight Timmy Fight Foundation. Clare and Tim McDonnell’s son Timmy, a Holmdel High School graduate and current Rutgers student was hit by a car on October 4, 2014 resulting in severe brain damage. After 25 days at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, he transferred to the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute. Though he survived his injuries, Timmy now faces costly and extensive rehabilitation. The funds raised from the Pasta Feast will go directly toward helping Timmy on his road to recovery. Over many years, the McDonnell family has given to the Holmdel Community

40

as well as local communities whether through sports, children’s needs, or specific charities. Now that the McDonnell's needs the help, the Holmdel community has shown an overwhelming response to come together and rally behind this amazing family. As Clare looked around at all who attended, especially the young people, she said, “It’s all about the kids. They will learn from this and how important it is to give to others.” After always being on the giving side, she said, “For my family, being on the receiving end of this is the most humbling experience. We are so grateful for everyone and all that they are doing.” Alana Russo, a friend of the McDonnell family, shared, “The Holmdel community, including the schools, has been very generous

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

over the years to those in need. Once again, our town is faced with a tragedy and members of the community are coming out to help. Timmy is such a ray of sunshine; a sweet, friendly young man. And this is the most philanthropic family. The father is the founder of “My Three Sons” that has helped countless children and families in need. Their everyday life is about giving to others. They have continued to fulfill charitable commitments they made even though their own lives have been turned upside down with this tragedy. They are always looking outward and being the first to say ‘how can we help?’ They are incredible people and now the community wants to reach out to them.” Numerous volunteers helped to serve the pasta meal, donated by

Puglia of New York and DeMarco’s of Aberdeen. Max’s Men’s Shop and Uniforms in Brooklyn, New York donated the blue shirts worn by the volunteers. T-shirt sales, 50/50s, and assisting with donations were also handled by the volunteers. The organizers of this event want to send out special thanks to the Holmdel School System for use of the Commons area and for help in setting it up; the entire Holmdel School District; the HYAA; as well as St. Catherine’s and St. Benedict’s churches. Donations can be made to the Fight Timmy Fight Foundation in several ways. Personal checks should be made out to Timmy McDonnell and sent to PO Box 326, Holmdel, NJ 07733. Corporate checks should be made out to Hope for Children Foundation and referenced to

“Timmy McDonnell” then sent to PO Box 4325, Middletown, NJ 07748. Credit card donation information can be found at http://fightfortimmy. mydagsite.com. Future events and updates on Timmy can be found at www.facebook.com/ PrayersforTimmyMcDonnell. At press time for Community Magazine’s January 2015 edition, Mr. Tim McDonnell shared this update about his son. Timmy underwent surgery at Robert Wood Johnson on December 11, which was successful, and then returned to Kessler Institute. He is now recuperating and working on getting stronger after the operation. He will have about five to six weeks of rehabilitation and then be revaluated. “He still has a really long way to go but he

can talk a little now, sometimes in sentences and his right side is getting stronger. At this time, we just have to wait and see. From where we were to where we are now, this is definitely a miracle. If it hadn’t been for all those who stayed with us and prayed those first four days, I am convinced we wouldn’t be where we are. The town and so many other people have been unbelievable. And Kessler has been fantastic; they have done a phenomenal job.” Despite their personal tragedy, the McDonnell family still has found time to collect and donate toys to the Pediatric hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The McDonnell’s will also continue their partnership with the McLaughlin Pentecostal Church in Long Branch to distribute toys and food.

DIVORCE TALK

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.

GETTING FROM THE STARTING LINE TO THE FINISH LINE

T

he question I am often asked is: “How long will my divorce take?” The short answer is: “It depends.” However, that seemingly simple question really requires a fairly complicated answer.

Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. For more information please see the firm’s website at www. par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

Divorce cases can only end two ways: an agreement of the parties (as the overwhelming majority of them do) or a decision by a judge after a trial. Agreements result from a series of compromises as the spouses give and take in an effort to reach common ground. Trials take place when one or both spouses conclude that compromise is no longer (if it ever was) a viable option. Settlements (i.e., agreements) can occur at any stage in the process. Some agreements are reached before a Complaint for Divorce is filed. Others are reached after days of trial. Most are reached

at some point in between. The earlier in the process the parties can reach common ground, the sooner an agreement, and shortly thereafter a divorce, can be obtained. However, the more litigation that is required, the more complex the facts and/or the more complicated the legal issues involved in a particular case, the longer it will take to reach the end. The initial stage of almost every divorce is the discovery phase – the process by which each side gathers the information needed to intelligently discuss a settlement or, failing settlement, to prepare his/her case for trial. Brenna Remick – Cross Country and Track – Cornell University Ashley Ventura – Softball – St. Joseph’s University Breanna Keelan – Softball – Georgian Court University SJVHS Athletic Director, Mr. Rich Lamberson, “I am very proud of our student-athletes here at SJVHS. Their ability to play at the next level is a testament to their hard work both in the classroom and on their respective playing field. It was truly a privilege seeing them grow and mature over the last four years, and I wish them nothing but the best of luck as they move forward in their academic and athletic careers.”

Lincroft Elementary School PTA held their third annual Winter Wonderland fundraiser on December 6 at Colonial Nursery. Parents baked and donated homemade goodies, and hot pretzels were available. Visitors also enjoyed hot chocolate and S’mores. A new addition this year was a station where children could have their picture taken with Santa. Parent volunteers assisted at all of the stations. Setting the mood for the coming holidays as well as this event in particular was the performance by the Lincroft School Chorus under the direction of Mr. Jupinka. Also new this year was the performance by the school band under the direction of Mrs. Domashinski. Chairs of the event were Lori Cowell and Kristin Trezza. “It was a perfect start to the Holiday Season, and Kristin and I enjoyed chairing this event. It was amazing to see the outpouring support from our school families as well as our community,” said Cowell. “A special thanks to Colonial Nursery, all of our volunteers, and everyone that came out despite the cold and rainy day in order to make this event a success,” she noted. Colonial Nursery generously donated 15% of their sales during the event.

BREATHE WHITE 1ST ANNUAL BREATHE WHITE FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS RAISED OVER 35,000! Over a hundred friends and family attended the 1st annual BREATHE White For CYSTIC FIBROSIS benefit held at the Raven and the Peach on December 6, 2014, for Stanley Zolek, a Holmdel boy with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The event was the first local benefit the family held for CF, which raised awareness and generated over $35,000 in donations for the much needed scientific research for the disease. The theme of the night was ‘Breathe White’, symbolizing clean lungs. Guests attended in their winter white cocktail attire and enjoyed live music, wine tastings, fabulous food and white martinis in a space filled with white trees, lights and snowflakes. Renaissance Pilates of Red Bank and Ashford & Grace Fine Jewelers were the two main sponsors for the event. Cystic Fibrosis is a devastating disease that effects the lungs, pancreas and leads to life threatening lung infections. There is no cure. The Zolek’s have been fighting CF and working very closely with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since Stanley’s birth 11 years ago. Stanley is the poster child for the Foundation and has played a key role in the annual Great Strides event in NYC since he

Local School Provides

“Hope for Children” Children helping children is an invaluable lesson that is taught at Home Away From Home Academy in Aberdeen. Each year, the school participates in a Toy Drive to benefit a local organization. For the second year in a row, their efforts were geared toward the “Hope for Children Foundation” based in Middletown. Owner of the Academy Phyllis Visone says, “Having a child go out to purchase a toy for another child in need is one of the best ways to embrace the holiday season, in our eyes.” This year, the school also participated in a monetary collection for Timmy McDonnell, a Holmdel resident and alumni of Home Away From Home Academy. On October 4, a car struck Timmy, 20, while he crossed Easton Avenue in New Brunswick. Timmy was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma with severe brain damage. After 25 days at Robert Wood Johnson, Timmy was transferred to the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute. Timmy has survived, but is now facing an extensive & costly rehabilitation. “Fight for Timmy” fundraisers have been held throughout Holmdel for him, and the school was honored to help this family with assistance from the Hope for Children Foundation. In past toy drives, the school was recognized for its plentiful

collection of items, collecting over 600 toys each year. Carmine S. Visone, co-owner, says “the most important thing here is teaching the children that it is just as important to give as it is to receive.” Some of the items they collected include: stuffed animals, coloring books, arts and crafts supplies, puzzles, and more. The Toy Drive lasted from November 24 through December 15 when the elves of “Hope for Children” picked up what they collected. The effort put forth by the Academy to help others is truly inspiring and their work will continue to assist a charity during the holiday season every year. Hope for Children Foundation began in 2002 with a group of young professionals, entrepreneurs and parents in Monmouth County working together to raise funds with the end result of making a significant positive difference in the lives of children. On an annual basis, Hope for Children Foundation identifies charitable organizations and individuals that will benefit from their fundraising efforts. Past beneficiaries have included K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Arc of Monmouth County, Prevention 1st, YMCA, Monmouth Medical Center and more.

NAVIGATING PARENTHOOD The World’s Hardest Job

The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present The Art of Parenting, the institute’s new six-session winter 2015 course. Rabbi Shmaya Galperin of The Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel will conduct the six course sessions at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21 at The Jewish Federation Office located at 960 Holmdel Road, Building #2 in Holmdel. “As parents we are constantly being bombarded with various educational approaches and methods,” explains Rabbi Shmaya Galperin. “How do you strike the correct balance between discipline and freedom? This course answers these great questions by looking to timeless Jewish wisdom.” The course was designed by JLI in order to help parents navigate the stormy waters of child-rearing. From questions of how children and parents should relate to each other, to how to help a child cultivate a healthy self-esteem, The Art of Parenting provides a solid foundation anchored in the eternal wisdom of Jewish thought and practice for parents 54

to explore and develop their own parenting philosophies and techniques. “Empires and civilizations have come and gone, but the Jewish people have survived,” says Rabbi Galperin, “This course taps into the great Jewish parenting success story that is our people’s survival, against all odds, over the course of thousands of years.” Like all previous JLI programs, The Art of Parenting is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. 20 YEARS OF ANSWERING AN EMERGENCY CALLING

TEAM LIFE, Inc. Marks Milestone

2000 began offering advanced training classes. In order to meet the growing demand for TEAM LIFE’S services, he settled into his main headquarters in Colts Neck in 2008 and began hiring office support staff. Over the past 20 years, TEAM LIFE has trained over 10,000 people in CPR and AED and has distributed AED devices to over 2,000 customers nationally and internationally.

Team Life, Inc. opened its doors to its customers, constituents and friends on December 4, 2014 to celebrate 20 years of providing AED & CPR training and sales of AEDs to everyone from the lay person to medical professionals. From his experiences as a medic and CPR instructor, Team Life Founder and President Jim Schatzle recognized the need for readily accessible automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). “When a person goes into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), the heart stops beating in an effective, organized manner, and can’t adequately pump blood. If it’s not treated within minutes, it quickly leads to death. The heart must be “defibrillated” quickly, because a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat isn’t restored. That statistic is absolutely staggering to me. That’s why I started TEAM LIFE. SCA can happen at any time, anywhere and everyone should be equipped to help save a life,” Jim stated. Starting out in his home office in 1994, Jim quickly expanded the facets of his business becoming a Cardiac Science AED distributor in 1997, using his garage as a warehouse and in

In attendance to congratulate Jim’s success was Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande and Freeholder Lillian Burry. Assemblywoman Casagrande presented a Joint Legislative Resolution honoring Jim and Team Life’s “outstanding service and exemplary dedication” to training the lay persons and health care providers in CPR, AED and Advanced classes. Freeholder Burry, along with the support of the entire Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, commended Team Life’s 20 year journey of “empowering people to increase the chance of survival in times of emergencies” and proclaimed the day as TEAM LIFE DAY. With the help of his two sons, Jimmy and Jack, Jim performed a ceremonial ribbon cutting representing the opening of the newly expanded offices.

RBC’S 1ST ANNUAL CASEY 5K RUN Dedicated to the Memory of Legendary RBC Coach Jack Rafter LEFT TO RIGHT: Race winners Will Alston and Shannon Gillespie

Runners, alumni and students gather for a photo at RBC’s 1st Annual Casey 5k Run

On November 16, 2014, in true Red Bank Catholic running tradition, Caseys of all ages were not deterred by the chilly weather. The First Annual Casey 5K Run, welcomed a crowd of over 200 runners and even more supporters at Thompson Park in Lincroft for a day of running, walking, cheering and sharing memories with friends, both old and new. Alumni from RBC classes spanning from 1955 to 2003 participated along with their families, friends, current students and runners of all levels. The event raised funds to support RBC athletics and was held in honor of the memory of Jack Rafter, who dedicated 45 years at Red Bank Catholic as a teacher, a coach and eventually as Athletic Director. Rafter, considered to be the “Father of Girls Track” was according the current RBC Athletic Director Joe Montano, “one of the first people to promote girls sports.” He helped establish RBC’s great tradition in both cross country and track and field, and spearheaded the campaign to admit Catholic schools into the Shore Conference. At the starting line, race committee member and RBC alumni runner Joe Freeman (RBC ’69) shared one of Coach Rafter’s mantras that he “fondly” remembers with all the shivering runners: “There is no such thing as cold, or rain, or snow or anything. Get out there and run!” So with a laugh, they were off. With a time of 16:09, Will Alston was first to cross

the finish line. RBC assistant cross country and track coach Shannon Gillespie took first place in the women’s division with a time of 18:39.29. As the first men’s and women’s division finishers, they each won beach cruisers generously donated by the Leys and Rogers families. RBC assistant cross country coach Joe Berardi came in second overall with a time of 16:38.54. Joe, RBC Class of 2005, and Shannon, RBC Class of 2004, each took first place in the men’s and women’s RBC alumni divisions, respectively. All were invited to relax with food, drinks and live music at the post-race gathering at Val’s Tavern in Rumson, donated by Val’s owners and RBC parents Linda and Chris Smith. Vocalist and musician John Rafferty volunteered to perform lively Irish music. Overall, the inaugural event was a wonderful success. Race Director Michaela Ferrigine shared her appreciation for all the time, effort, supplies and services donated by the many volunteers who helped make the day a reality. She added, “With the help of our good friends at the Jersey Shore Running Club, Phil and Penny Hinck, who volunteer to help runs get going, we were able to put together what we hoped would be a ‘feel good’ RBC event that will grow over time.” Judging from the faces of all who attended, they did just that. The committee has secured the morning of Thanksgiving Day 2015 as the date for next year’s Casey 5K Run.

Operation Provide Comfort Union Beach Spread Holiday Cheer

More than two years later and the needs still abound! “This year many have reached out to us asking what they can do for our neighbors in Union Beach,” said Glen Dalakian, one of the first members of Operation Provide Comfort Union Beach (OPC). “We received calls from residents as well as organizations like the Colts Neck Business Association, Colts Neck Women’s Club, Colts Neck PBA, the Colts Neck Reformed Church and others.” The call for a Merry Christmas came and OPC Union Beach responded with a team effort from members and their key sponsors. At the last OPC meeting, it was agreed that they would assist those in need with free Christmas Trees, and as usual, the team took it to the next level. “Trees were delivered by Tommy Orgo of Slope Brook Farm in Colts Neck, along with ornaments from the Colts Neck Business Association, and an anonymous donor purchased stands,” stated OPC’s founder Jim Sfayer. Gateway Church of Union Beach, along with Geri Ryan were also instrumental (once again) in coordinating the effort and distributing the gifts throughout their town. The Colts Neck Women’s club has also been a continued supporter of Union Beach often working in conjunction with OPC. “The Colts Neck Women’s Club collected over

100 toys for distribution to children in Union Beach,” said Diana Perkowski one of the first members of OPC Union Beach. Once again, Colts Neck Reformed Church’s ND4K youth program took the time to make Christmas ornaments for the kids in Union Beach. A festive party in December was held at the Church and was a great success. Dozens of decorations were presented to OPC. ND4K’s provides opportunities for growth and the development of leadership skills in a structured, safe and fun-filled environment for children of incarcerated parents. Sandra Anderson and Michelle Perkinson founded ND4K and are currently co-Presidents, this prison ministry program is a recognized 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Operation Provide Comfort Union Beach has ambitious plans for after the New Year as there are still almost 400 families not yet back in their homes. The OPC Union Beach mandate was to be a long-term sponsor to the residents impacted by the storm 2+ years ago and they continue to do so. Your support and ideas are welcome as we formulate plans and raise funds to fill the gaps left since the storms. Operation Provide Comfort was formed by concerned citizens of Colts Neck. It is a totally volunteer organization and 100% all funds raised go directly to the people who need it most. For more information visit www. OPCUnionBeach.org. We continue to endeavor to see all of our Union Beach neighbors restored from the damage done by Sandy in 2012. Join us as a volunteer, make a financial contribution or step-up with needed resources. All are welcome to participate in this on-going effort. Donations can also be made payable to CNCC (Memo: Union Beach) and mailed to CNCC, 25 Merchants Way, Colts Neck, NJ 07722.

A Special Marriage Proposal AT MONMOUTH COUNTY POLICE ACADEMY GRADUATION On December 11, 2014, Melissa Fleming of Hazlet thought she was just attending her boyfriend’s graduation of the 87th class of the Monmouth County Police Academy at the Neptune Performing Arts Center. Unbeknownst to her, she was about to have a very special marriage proposal from her boyfriend, now fiancé Chris DeGroat of Keyport in front of 58 recruits, family and friends. Chris DeGroat made a special thank you speech and at the end, he proposed. Melissa Fleming said, “It was a complete surprise to me, both our families and friends that were in attendance, the entire graduating class and police academy knew before me. It was just amazing!”

Congratulations Melissa Fleming and Chris DeGroat! 60
