THE DELIGHTS OF SPRINGTIME are just around the corner, the winter hibernation will finally be over. Monmouth County is a very exciting place, especially in the spring and summer. As always, our upcoming issues will highlight all the local things to do with friends and family. You can also find us on Facebook (CommunityMagNJ) and follow us on Twitter (Community Mag NJ) as we keep you updated about happenings all year long.

THINK SPRING! ...What a warm thought We will custom design with flowering shrubs and evergreens a landscape design that will suit your needs.

In keeping with our goal of bringing you inspiring, uplifting stories about your neighbors and friends, we would like to offer you, our community, an opportunity to join us in taking this magazine on an ever more exciting adventure in 2016.

Make your property a place of beauty and seclusion and a daily place of tranquility.

Do you know a student, teacher, parent, grandparent, retiree, or otherwise impressive person who when thought of immediately brings the word “awesome” to mind? Is there anyone you know personally or within the community who has impacted the lives of others through their self less acts of kindness? Someone who has a unique hobby or interest? Anyone who has fulfilled their vision of that dream job? Have you heard of anyone who has invented or recreated a way to tackle a mundane task and make it eco-friendly, as well as fun?

FROM THE DESK OF... HOLMDEL MAYOR ERIC HINDS I hope you are all enjoying our winter season because if the groundhog is right, it won’t be here for much longer! Last month I announced at our reorganization meeting our goal of moving Holmdel from good to GREAT and we are well on our way. As you will read, there is a lot of positive news going on in our town. I would like to recognize the outstanding job our Department of Public Works (DPW) did on our roadways the last couple of months. Our schools were the only schools able to open in our area largely in part due to the safety of our roads; which were treated and plowed through the night.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE HIGHLIGHT The Township Committee and I would like to recognize the above and beyond duty call made by Patrolmen William Bernard and Daniel Bowden in January. Police Chief Mioduszewski received an email from a grateful resident who spoke of the passing of her beloved golden retriever, Tallulah, and the extraordinary assistance she received from our officers. This is yet another great example of the great town we live in. Chief Mioduszewski shared, “making a little extra effort can go a long way. And your actions in this incident, reflect positively on all of us. Thanks for another great job. Keep up the good work!”

ongoing projects including painting, gardening, litter collection, cemetery cleanup and more. Our first project will be a Community Litter Cleanup on April 9, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., please meet at the Community Center. More details coming!

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATE Effective February 1, 2016, township firefighters have again begun responding from Station 1, which is located on Main Street in Holmdel. Additionally, the Township Committee has authorized the appointment of a Training Officer that will oversee the training, education and compliance of both companies. Members of both Fire Co #1 & #2 will participate in cooperative training exercises, drills and educational sessions designed to ensure all standards are met and continuity exists throughout the department. Volunteers are the cornerstone of our society. They provide invaluable services that would otherwise cost tax payers much more. Volunteering builds bonds throughout the community and save lives. Your fire department is always looking for willing candidates to join the ranks.

THANK YOU GREEN TEAM! At the January 19th Township Committee meeting, the Green Team presented the Township with a plaque they received for becoming Bronze Sustainable Jersey Certified for 2015-2018. The Holmdel Green Team was established in 2005. Their goal for 2015 was to become certified through Sustainable Jersey, an environmental incentive program that helps municipalities address quality-of-life-issues such as conservation, biodiversity and sustainability through community resources.

If you have what it takes to fill the boots of a firefighter and want to join the team, please call 732.946.2820, ext. 1820.

MAYOR’S INITIATIVE VOLUNTEER PROJECTS I am very proud to announce a huge opportunity for all residents to get involved in improving our community. There will be many ways to volunteer and opportunities for the students to receive service hours as well. Look for communication coming shortly announcing special

DEARBORN MARKET hosted the seventh annual “Evening to Benefit the Frances Foundation” on February 13, 2016. About 150 guests socialized as they sampled wine, a variety of gourmet cheeses, and hors d’ oeuvres, as well as enjoying the talents of acoustic guitar player Jerry Topinka. This event coincided with the 19th Annual Deep Cut Orchid Society Orchid Show held each year at Dearborn Market. During the evening, guests were also able to tour the expansive orchid displays on hand in the greenhouse. A portion of the ticket sales for this event went to the Frances Foundation as well as 100% of the proceeds from an orchid raffle held through the evening. Nine vendors from the Orchid Show along with Dearborn Market donated orchids for this raffle.

the grandmother of warrior Logan Parker from Ocean Township attended and spoke about how her grandson Logan was diagnosed with leukemia when he was four-years-old. Now, at nine-yearsold, he just started his fifth fight following his fourth relapse. This courageous fun-loving boy has been fighting cancer for more than half his life. Logan’s grandma, Pattie Tucker, spoke of how the Frances Foundation has been in Logan’s corner for the last five years; sending him to see his favorite sports team The Mets, as well as bringing him other smiles and assistance to his family. The Mya Lin Terry Foundation and the Frances Foundation are partnering up to do something special to bring some smiles and comfort and encouragement to Logan and his brothers and family.”

On behalf of the Frances Foundation, Bob Heugle, who is founder and president, extended sincere “It was a great night for a gratitude to the entire great cause and we are happy Luccarelli family and and proud that Dearborn the Dearborn team for a wonderful evening. continues this tradition with “We are extremely the Frances Foundation." fortunate to have such loyal and generous partners committed to our mission,” he shared. The Frances Foundation is a local group that works tirelessly to put smiles on the faces of children fighting cancer in this area. They also provide financial assistance to their families. Dearborn Market has worked with the Frances Foundation since it was first established by the Heugle family of Holmdel, and they have had the pleasure of producing several fundraising events together in the past.

DJ Luccarelli said of the evening, “It was a great night for a great cause and we are happy and proud that Dearborn continues this tradition with the Frances Foundation. Dearborn is committed to helping organizations that are close to our community.” Joining the Luccarelli families at this event were Monmouth County Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds and his wife Karen, Holmdel Deputy Mayor Greg Buontempo, Hometown Heroes President Michael Schwartz, Kick Cancer Overboard Vice President Donna Lyn Zatcic, Officers Jon Martin and Christopher Cherney from the Holmdel PBA, Holmdel Kiwanis Officer Frank Allocco, and Mya Lin Terry Foundation President Kelly Terry.

Heugle shared, “A number of parents and guests of our pediatric cancer warriors and angels attended this event. In particular,

Heugle offered the last comment of the evening. “As always, the friendly hospitality extended by our hosts the Luccarelli Family was the best! The wind chill outside was below zero, but the entire 11,000 square footage of Dearborn Greenhouse glowed from the warmth of the generous Frances Foundations supporters who attended this event!”

Holmdel Community Church Youth Group in NYC

THE HCUCC YOUTH GROUP took a weekend retreat on February 5 and 6, 2016 for an overnight called NIGHTWATCH at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City. They spent all night in the largest Gothic cathedral in the world with other youth groups from around the region. (The church is as long as two football fields and has a seven-second echo inside!) The group sang, had a drumming circle, a scavenger hunt, and a midnight worship service.

WIZARDS GAME A Slam Dunk FOR COLTS NECK SCHOOLS PHOTOS SARAH STEPIC

The sold-out event raised over $12,000 for PTO-funded programs for students. BASKETBALL FANS CAME OUT in force in late January to watch the Harlem Wizards take on Team Kobe Wan Kenobi, the teachers and staff of the Colts Neck Schools. Playing to a packed house at Colts Neck High School, the Wizards delighted fans young and old alike with basketball skills, thrills, and comedy on the court.

The evening was all about entertainment. Game action took a back seat to the antics on and off the court, as players paused to take photos with the crowd, dance the Nae Nae with fans, and perform comic stunts and gags. The Wizards team, led by fan favorites David “DP” Paul and “King Arthur” Lewis, had fans laughing and engaged throughout the night. Prior to the game, children had the opportunity to warm up with the Wizards on the court as “Wiz Kids.” One lucky young fan, Justin Enriques, won the drawing to play with the Wizards in the fourth quarter. Fans were also treated to a post-game autograph signing session with the team. The Colts Neck team put up a good fight, with Jim Osmond, Principal of Conover Road Elementary School, scoring first for the Kobe Wan Kenobis. It was an uphill battle against the amazing hoop talent of the Wizards, who dominated throughout the game. Recent Cedar Drive Middle School graduates, Brandon Andreyko, Catherine Gibson, Eva Gibson, and Izzy Pecoraro joined Principal Colin Rigby on the court for an exciting third quarter of competitive basketball.

Rounding out the team for Colts Neck was Tricia Barr, Sara Campbell, Jennabeth Curran, Hope Delia, Vincent Dellanno, Lauren Hums, Melissa Jones, Merri Milano, Jeffrey Pringle, Debra Tarby, Ryan White, B.Jay Willis, and Thomas Wonaszek. Although the final score was an unsurprising 82-69, the game winners were clearly the children of the Colts Neck schools, who enjoyed an evening of basketball entertainment while earning money for their schools. The sold-out event raised over $12,000 for PTO-funded programs for students. The game was organized by the Colts Neck PTO. Fundraising Director and event chair Patricia Pecoraro thanked players and fans for supporting the sold-out event. "Many thanks to all the fans who came out to cheer on our team and join in on the fun,” said Pecoraro. “We are truly grateful to our talented teachers, staff and recent graduates for proudly representing the Colts Neck Schools as Team Kobe Wan Kenobi. They were good sports and put on a great show.” Pecoraro also recognized the students of the Colts Neck High School National Honor Society for volunteering at the event and The Music Man Singing Ice Cream Shoppe for its generous donation of popcorn to the concession stand.

DEARBORN MARKET HOSTED CHILI COOKING CHALLENGE TO BENEFIT BRIDGES STORY SUSAN MURPHY | PHOTO CREDIT ROBERT CATALANO

ABOVE Left to right: Chili Challenge Judges Frank Luccarelli of Dearborn Market, Kathy Logan of BRIDGES, first place winner Mimi Chang Turbitt of Middletown, and Judge Drew Araneo of Drew’s Bayshore Bistro gather for a photo at the annual Chili Cook-off held on January 31, 2016. LEFT Michael is joined by his family after winning the Customer Choice Award. DEARBORN MARKET held its second Chili Cooking Challenge on January 31, 2106. It was their fifth annual cook-off and one of their best. All proceeds from this event went to BRIDGES at the Shore, an Outreach Program that helps Bayshore families in need. Twenty-one entries were sampled by a steady flow of customers throughout the two-hour event. Each batch of chili was unique and many included the use of secret ingredients, use of a cherished family recipe, and putting a new spin on a tried-and-true recipe. Toppings of shredded cheese, sour cream, jalepeno corn bread chunks, corn chips, and much more were available for customers to try on the various styles of chili.

Twelve-year-old Tinaz Kotval of Aberdeen made her very own receipe called “Super hero Chilly.” She loves to cook and said, “Entering cooks-offs is a fun way to embrace the things you like to do. It’s good experience. Her eleven-year-old sister Mehr also entered with her “Quinoa and Corn Chili.” She loves to cook soup and stew with her Dad, and said, “It’s good to get involved in the community. Doing this helps you get out and try new things.” Nine-year-old Sydney Fair of Aberdeen said this was her first time here. She likes to cook and hopes to enter other chili contests. Fifteen-year-old Nicholas Giunta of Middletown made a smoked short rib chili. Although this was his first time here, he said, “I have been cooking with my Dad since I was six.” He would like to attend culinary school in the future. Following the sampling of each chili, customers were asked to vote for the one chili they felt should win the Customer Choice 18

Award. The final say for first, second, and third winners of the Chili Cooking Challenge was in the hands – or spoons! – of the panel of three judges which included Frank Luccarelli of Dearborn Market, Kathy Logan of BRIDGES, and Drew Araneo of Drew’s Bayshore Bistro. “It was a tough competition. And it was great seeing young people in the challenge,” said Mr. Luccarelli. “BRIDGES at the Shore appreciates the support from Dearborn Market each year. It was especially great to have several young people in the competition this year. I look forward to this continuing to be an annual event,” said Mrs. Logan. “This was awesome. There was a good variety of chili dishes. It’s getting tougher each year to choose the winners!” said Mr. Araneo. First place went to Mimi Chang Turbitt of Middletown with her “Asian Short Rib Chili.” Mimi said she likes to cook competitively. “I cook American food and put a novel twist to it like using aromatic Asian spices which make it stand out.” Second place winner was Victoria Arlia and third place winner was Lori Davidson. The winner of the Customer Choice Award was fourteen-year-old Michael Campanella of Holmdel with his “Chili con Miguel.” This was his first competition. “I was so shocked and excited that I won!” he said and noted that one of his secret ingredients was maple syrup. Mimi Chang Turbitt received a $100 Dearborn Market gift card, an official trophy, and her winning recipe will be featured in Dearborn Market’s March Almanac.

FEMALE FENCERS AT RANNEY TAKE TWO FIRST-PLACE STATE FINISHES

Left to right: Ranney Athletic Director Bobby Malone, freshman Ariana Mangano, senior Nicole Vaiani and Coach Mohammed Shafaie hold their first-place medals after the February 2016 Prep State Championship. LEFT: Ariana Mangano of Colts Neck, Ranney freshman, at the February 2016 Prep State Championship where she earned first place in epee. RIGHT: Nicole Vaiani of Wall, Ranney senior, at the February 2016 Prep State Championship where she earned first place in foil. Nicole earned early acceptance to the University of Pennsylvania where she will attend the Wharton School of Business and compete on the Ivy League’s Fencing Team.

TWO FEMALE RANNEY SCHOOL STUDENTS took 1st place at the Prep State

Championship on February 17, 2016. Ariana Mangano of Colts Neck, Class of 2019, took 1st place in Women’s Epee and Nicole Vaiani of Wall, Class of 2016, took 1st place in Women’s Foil. Both girls placed at the recent district championship as well, taking 1st and 2nd in their individual events, respectively. The Prep tournament, hosted on Ranney School’s Tinton Falls campus, featured 12 teams from schools across New Jersey. Senior Nicole Vaiani has earned early acceptance to the University of Pennsylvania’s Ivy League Fencing Team for her athletic achievements as well as admission to its Wharton School of Business; she will matriculate there after graduation from Ranney this spring. “Although I am excited to begin a new life at Penn, I could not have achieved this goal without the support from my classmates and teachers at Ranney,” said Nicole. “With their support, I was able to not only maintain my academic status, but also I excelled in my fencing career, thus earning my recruitment slot for Penn.” Nicole began fencing at the age of 9 and has participated on Ranney’s fencing team through her Upper

20

School career. She helped the squads win their way to the Prep States Championships two years in a row. Outside of Ranney, Nicole trains with personal coaches and has built an impressive list of accomplishments, including a third-place finish at the 2014 Cadet World Cup Fencing Competition held in Italy. Ariana Mangano, a Ranney freshman, started fencing at age 10 and is currently coached at Atlantic Fencing Academy by Jim Carpenter, an Olympian, and Donna Stone, a World Cup Champion. “I enjoyed representing Ranney on the strip, and I really appreciate all of the support from the people who came out to watch,” said Ariana after the Prep State tournament. Ariana is ranked #1 on the National Y-14 points list, which serves as her division. Her achievements this season have been particularly amazing because she dislocated her right shoulder last summer while battling to the top 16 in Women’s Epee Cadet (U17). Despite the injury, she continued to fence to the semi-finals and captured the Bronze Medal. After learning of the severity of the injury, Ariana spent the summer months seeing medical specialists and began to train to fence with her left arm in order to stay in the game.

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

When it came time for the October 2015 North America Cup (NAC), Ariana picked up her right epee at the last minute and gave it a shot. She managed to fence to the top 24 and received national points, moving onto the November NAC where she placed in the top 16 for Cadets and captured the Gold in Y14. Most recently, she placed in the top 18 of Juniors at the Junior Olympics and won the Bronze medal in Cadets. Ariana will compete in the Division I National Championship this coming April. Also placing in the 2016 Ranney-hosted Prep States were Ranney students: Rebekah Lo of Ocean, Class of 2017, who took 7th place in Women’s Sabre; Olivia Eaddy of Wall, Class of 2017, who took 8th place in Women’s Foil; and Eric Wu of Morganville, Class of 2017, who placed in the top 8 in Men’s Epee. In addition to personal trainers, Ranney fencers are coached by Mohammed Shafaie, known as Coach Mo, and the full Ranney Fencing roster also includes: Ava Atanacio ‘18, Sofia Cioffi ‘17, Jasmin Davé ‘18, Kangqing He (Connie Hall) ‘18 - an international student, Jonathan Park ‘17, Timothy (TJ) Spicer ‘16 and Alec Taffin ‘18.

DO THESE TRIGGER AN IRS AUDIT? P R OV I D E D BY | Chris Whalen, CPA

I get this question often, especially this time of year. Many of us are very generous, but hesitate to claim all of that charitable generosity as an itemized deduction on our tax returns for fear of it triggering an IRS Audit.

I compiled the following table which shows you average charitable deductions based on income levels. Simply find your income range in the left column. Any money or property you donate to qualified charitable organizations is eligible for a tax deduction.

So, are your charitable contributions higher than average? Lower than average?

Please visit my website, chriswhalencpa.com, to learn more about my firm & to read more informative memos like this one.

Based on this, it's safe to say that if you earned $75,000 last year and claimed a $3,000 charitable deduction, this may not raise any IRS flags. One important note. The lower the income, the lower the percentage of taxpayers taking charitable deductions. This is a good time to review the basic rules for Charitable Contributions, both cash and non-cash. Charitable contributions are only deductible if you itemize deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions. To be deductible, you must make charitable contributions to qualified organizations. Payments to individuals are never deductible. To determine if the organization that you have contributed to qualifies as a charitable organization for income tax deduction purposes, ask them for proof of their qualifying status. You can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received if your contribution entitles you to merchandise, goods or services, including admission to a charity ball, banquet, theatrical performance, or sporting event. gift (regardless of amount), you must maintain as a record of the contribution a bank record or a written communication from the qualified organization containing the name of the organization, the amount, and the date of the contribution. It is not always possible to get a receipt for cash contributions: Think of Salvation Army buckets, local sports teams collecting outside supermarkets, etc. Simply keep a log of those types of contributions and provide that to me at year end with your other tax papers. In addition to deducting your cash contributions, you generally can deduct the fair market value of any other property you donate to qualified organizations. For any contribution of $250 or more (including contributions of cash or property), you must obtain and keep in your records a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization indicating the amount of the cash and a description of any property contributed. The acknowledgment must say whether the organization provided any goods or services in exchange for the gift and, if so, must provide a description and a good faith estimate of the value of those goods or services. One document from the qualified organization may satisfy both the written communication requirement for monetary gifts and the contemporaneous written acknowledgment requirement for all contributions of $250 or more.

LOCAL RESIDENT CREATES NEW WAY TO GIVE BACK

T W ENT Y-ONE-Y E A R-OLD C OLT S NECK R E SIDENT A DA M S CH AT ZM A NN is familiar with the concept of giving back to one’s community and has created a new way to do so. In December, 2014, Schatzmann established a startup company he named NationalGiving LLC. The idea for the company came to him while standing in a long line waiting to check out his purchases. He thought that if each person gave a small amount of change it could create a significant revenue stream for a small charity. “NationalGiving was created with this vision of generating a new revenue source for local charities to increase their bottom line and assist with the good work they do in our communities. Our ‘Round-UP’ program can be a life-changing opportunity for thousands of charities that lack the time and personnel to dedicate to fundraising,” explained Schatzmann. He said the simple concept allows each person to make a decision at check out to ‘Round-UP’, that is, to round up purchases to the nearest dollar with the extra amount designated for charity. NationalGiving uses an innovative approach to this process as opposed to the standard can collection or change collection. Schatzmann noted, “Our stream-lined program makes the process of donating easier in small amounts with a substantial long-term impact. NationalGiving also allows the retail store to choose the local non-profit charity to support. We then bring consumer awareness to all participating NationalGiving locations via our robust marketing programs and campaigns,” Schatzmann explained. He added that current market trends show the majority of consumers have a philanthropic mindset and the NationalGiving “Round-UP” program targets this market. “Consumers will have the ability to give to the local charity in small amounts during each checkout thus increasing revenue through volume. Our preliminary data has shown that with our innovative marketing, we can capture a large percentage of the target market,” said Schatzmann. He shared that NationalGiving can work with any local non-profits and not just charities. Some examples he gave included police and fire departments, EMS, and public libraries. Schatzmann’s involvement in the community started early. During his time at Colts Neck High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society and captain of both the football and lacrosse teams. Schatzmann, who graduated high school in 2012, believes strongly in animal welfare, the environment, politics, science and technology. He has done community service at the Monmouth County SPCA from September 2012 to April 2014, and worked as an intern for the New York State Director at The Humane Society of the United States from January 2014 through June 2014. Schatzmann attended the University of Albany for two years and is currently attending Monmouth University where he is majoring in Finance with a minor in Marketing. He is also presently working as an M&A Analyst intern at Calder Associates. “I was raised in a family that gave back to the Colts Neck community – from my father who coached, to my mother who was PTO president and a Board of Education member. My exposure to giving back and personal volunteer experience combined with my current business classes helped shape the mission of NationalGiving. It has always been my intention to give back to the community as I gain success. Creating NationalGiving is a way for me to do that now,” said Schatzmann. He is currently working with the Colts Neck Pharmacy regarding the use of his NationalGiving “Round-UP” program. NationalGiving is also close to finalizing a partnership with notable charities in Monmouth County. “I am actively looking for new stores to join the change! I would like to connect more businesses with local charities. There is absolutely no cost to the retailers to have the RoundUP program in their store and this is a completely NEW revenue source for local non-profits. Remember that NationalGiving means making change with change.” Adam Schatzmann can be reached at NationalGiving@gmail.com.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY

Rabbits PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN NJ STATE DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES

The Humane Society of the United States is asking people to make the humane choice and refrain from acquiring live animals as Easter gifts this holiday season. Rabbits and chickens can make wonderful companions, but those adorable babies grow up quickly into adults that will need proper socialization, care and companionship for many years. After cats and dogs, rabbits are the animals most frequently surrendered to animal shelters, largely because people acquire them as youngsters but aren’t prepared for the long-term commitment involved. The majority of rabbits lose their homes because of “people reasons,” such as a move or the owner’s inability or unwillingness to care for the animal, and not because the rabbit has behavioral or health problems. Others are simply released into backyards by people who mistakenly believe they will be able to fend for themselves. Unlike wild rabbits, domestic pet rabbits cannot survive on their own outdoors. The decision to add any new pet to your household, whether it be a baby rabbit, a puppy or kitten should be considered carefully to ensure you have the time and resources to devote to the animal’s longterm care. The HSUS’s resources on rabbit care and adoption can help you decide whether a rabbit is the right pet for you. When the time is right and you have decided to get a rabbit because you have learned what it takes to provide great care and an appropriate diet, you have bunny-proofed your house, you have found a great rabbit veterinarian, and you are ready to give a special bunny the attention and exercise he/she needs every day. You don’t want to buy a bunny from a pet store because most of those rabbits come from mass-breeding facilities that can be like puppy mills. So what are your options? Animal shelters and rescue groups When you are ready to adopt, please be sure to visit your local shelter first. Many New Jersey shelters have adoptable rabbits already in their care that are just waiting for a wonderful new home like yours.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club

Enjoys Many Winter Activities and Events

On February 11, 2016, the Newcomers And Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas held a general meeting at Colts Neck Firehouse #2. Vice President Vicki Mazza, demonstrated the many ways to use scarves and accessories to enhance a winter wardrobe! Members brought their own scarves and learned at least 30 new ways to tie them. The next general meeting of the club will be the annual “Treasure Auction” held on March 10, 2016 at the Colts Neck Firehouse. Members are asked to bring only gently used items to be sold at the auction. Unsold items will be donated to a local charity. Members and guests will be treated to a full course catered lunch after the auction. The Newcomers and Neighbors club is open to all new and long-time residents of the Monmouth County Area and surrounding areas. The club sponsors social events and activities throughout each month. For more information, call 732.530.9543 or 732.446.9682.

In addition to shelters, there are numerous private rabbit adoption agencies that are run by people with in-depth knowledge of rabbits. Most groups depend on volunteers who provide foster care for homeless rabbits until they can find them a home. Many rabbit rescue groups partner with local animal shelters, helping to place bunnies through their foster care networks. To locate a rescue group that specializes in rabbits, contact your local animal shelter or search online through the House Rabbit Society. Two additional online resources are www.TheShelterPetProject.org or www.PetFinder.com should be your first stop. Consider giving children a plush toy or a chocolate rabbit.

Lincroft School Students Enjoy Family Ice Skating STORY DINA QUINTANO

Lincroft Elementary School held its first Ice Skating Event on February 10, 2016 at Middletown Ice World. The event was organized to raise funds for the upcoming 5th grade event at Lincroft Elementary School. It was a fun afternoon of skating for the Lincroft students, friends and some parents. It was a perfect afternoon to skate since Middletown schools had early dismissal for staff professional development day. The fundraiser was organized by Kathy Koske. She said, “It was a great success with over 120 students and parents attending. The students had two hours of open skate with members of the Middletown HS South Hockey Team in attendance to help beginner skaters. All proceeds went toward Lincroft School's Fifth Grade Event. Kathy plans to make this an annual event.

Puppy Mill Ordinance Set for Monmouth County A RESOLUTION, sponsored by Monmouth County Freeholder John Curley, that will encourage municipalities to adopt ordinances restricting the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores unless they obtain such dogs or cats from animal shelters or rescue organizations, was passed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on January 21, 2016. Monmouth County is the third county to pass such a resolution following Camden and Mercer Counties. Ocean County just passed a similar Resolution on February 3, 2016. Puppy mills continue to breed pets with health and/or behavioral issues which are then sold by pet stores to customers. These puppy mills are usually large-scale, inhumane,

32

commercial breeding facilities that emphasize profit over the welfare of the animal. Consumers often, unwittingly, purchase a sick pet resulting in heartache and financial hardship. Pets may be obtained from reputable hobby breeders or from local shelters or rescue organizations. "The Humane Society of the United States applauds the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders for passing this important resolution," said Kathleen Schatzmann, New Jersey State Director for the Humane Society of the United States. "In doing so, Monmouth County took a strong stand against the cruel puppy mill industry, while promoting responsible breeders and pet adoption."

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

"On behalf of Friends of Animals United New Jersey (FAUN-NJ), I would like to thank the freeholders for their dedication to making Monmouth County an animal friendly community. We would especially like to thank Freeholder Curley for his unwavering support of this resolution" said Janice Fisher, Puppy Mill Awareness Campaign Coordinator for FAUN-NJ. The Monmouth County SPCA is so honored to have the support of John Curley and other Monmouth County Freeholders. This resolution is a huge step for animal welfare in Monmouth County.

trip of a lifetime

Co-travelers with Mike Quinn and his father Vinny in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam with National Geographic Society flag.

COLTS NECK RESIDENT RETURNS FROM HIS GRAND PRIZE WIN STORY SUSAN MURPHY

COLTS NECK RESIDENT MIKE QUINN, who won the Grand Prize to Southeast Asia through National Geographic’s Instagram contest in late 2014, has returned a changed man. “This truly was an experience of a lifetime. The friendly people, the beautiful sights and the amazing culture made this National Geographic Adventure not only fun and exciting but gave me a better knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asia.” The story surrounding Quinn’s winning shot was first reported in Community Magazine in January 2015. His photo of the Grand Canyon taken on his f light to Las Vegas was chosen out of over 17,000 submissions uploaded to Instagram’s photo contest titled “ViewFromAboveContest.” Submissions had to be aerial in perspective and could not be shot from buildings, mountains, or rooftops. Quinn, who was 29 when he won the contest, planned to take his father Vinny in early 2016 so they would avoid the monsoon season in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. On January 21, 2016, soon after his thirty-first birthday, Quinn and his

36

father left. “The total travel time with layovers was 21 hours going and 30 hours coming back.” Despite the travel time, Quinn was able to visit two important sites he had hoped to see. “Angkor Wat was an amazing place to visit. It is a place of great pride for the Cambodian people as it is on their country's f lag. We went pre-dawn to see it in the sunrise and hundreds of tourists f locked to the largest religious monument in the world. The incredible size, architecture and detail of this temple made it stand out from all others.” Quinn also visited Ha Long Bay, which he described as having a natural beauty that made it a spectacular place. “It has a unique landscape of karst formations made from limestone that shoot out of the water hundreds of feet into the sky. There are thousands of these formations and they are all draped with green foliage. We went on a cruise for two days and the highlight was kayaking through this beautiful area and into natural cave tunnels where it was pitch black. Pictures and words do not do justice. This place is other worldly and would

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

need to be seen in person.” “The cultural differences were very evident as soon as we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Millions of motorbikes are used in daily life here and throughout these countries. It makes crossing the road hazardous and scary as you have no choice but to trust that the drivers will weave around you. Whole families of four would be on a bike as well as anything from small trees to refrigerators. An interesting experience was the variety of different food choices. “I have never had Vietnamese or Thai type foods before. Things I have never heard of and yet tried are now things I will seek out here in the United States. Fish is always a main staple of any menu in these three countries, but some foods that I had and will not forget were pumpkin soup, lotus seed soup, and sticky rice.” Quinn quickly realized that in these countries many things have to do with water. “Even in the dry season which is October through March, in which we went, it was still very rainy. The locals take advantage of this weather as they have endless amounts

shared, “Photography is a very big part of my life. Documenting nature, people and travel is really an amazing thing. It also has given me opportunities such as this trip to explore the world. I would love to take it to the next level and I think about it often. If I do, it would have to be the right time in my life to do so. Right now it is still a hobby!”

Temple of Ta Phrom, where the forest grows on top of the structure.

of rice fields that are filled with water. They use Water Buffalo for excavating their lands for farming purposes and the buffalo are considered part of the family. We attended a traditional water puppet show in Hanoi, Vietnam, which can only be found in these parts of the world.” One place that stands out in Quinn’s mind was hiking to a Laotian hill tribe in Luang Prabang, Laos. “It was a sad yet humbling experience to be part of. National Geographic Society provides food and supplies to the village and it was an honor to view this site. The local school was given supplies and toys as well and we watched the children receive these items.” Quinn said by using his Nikon D5000, “I was able to take panning photos of the motorbikes, landscapes, and portraits of people who lived on Ha Long Bay and document some of the great temples in Cambodia. His GoPro camera was used primarily for “biking through the villages of Hue in Vietnam and kayaking on Ha Long Bay so as not to miss any important moments.” One of the memorable parts of this trip for Quinn was sharing it with his father, Vinny. “It was nice to get him to a place he had never been before. We both have not traveled far out of the country so this was a cultural shock to him as well. He loved the country of Laos because of its very calm atmosphere and very friendly people. All in all he enjoyed the entire trip and it was a great experience for both of us.” Quinn, who is a Courier Supervisor for TD Bank,

When asked why he felt this was “a trip of a lifetime,” Quinn answered, “I am a huge fan of the National Geographic Society and what they do for our planet. So it was an honor to be on this trip and seeing how they give back to the communities that we visited. I never imagined traveling to the three countries of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The fact that I was able to go made this ‘a trip of a lifetime’ because it is so different from where I would normally go. Seeing and experiencing firsthand the cultural difference, beautiful landscapes, and ancient temples also made this an incredible trip.” Quinn added this as his final comment, which summarizes the impact this trip had on him. “I would just like to say that this trip was very comfortable and the people in these countries were very welcoming. Prior to going on this trip, I had a few people say to me, ‘isn’t this area dangerous’ or ‘why would you go on this trip?’ I feel the need to say that it felt completely safe the entire duration. I believe that many people feel negatively about this area because of the Vietnam War. Though the scars of that remain, the countries I visited are also filled with incredible history, amazing landscapes and friendly people. If you are ever planning a trip to Southeast Asia and are having doubts, please just go and see for yourself. You will have a TRIP OF A LIFETIME.”

DI VORCE TA LK : THE NEW CHILD SUPPORT LAW PR OV I DE D BY P E T E R C . PA R A S , E S Q.

ON JANUARY 19, 2016 a new child support bill was signed into law. It becomes effective February 1, 2017. Many family lawyers have said that the new statute doesn’t make substantive changes to the law, it only shifts the burden of proof. I don’t share that view. I regard the new act as a minefield that should be negotiated with extreme caution. Peter C. Paras

is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. Selected as "Super Lawyer" by NJ Monthly 2006 – 2016. Included in Best Lawyers in America 2015 - 2016 For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice. For legal advice you should consult your attorney.

Under the new law child support will end when a child reaches age nineteen, unless (1) a court order specifies otherwise or (2) the custodial parent successfully petitions a court to extend child support beyond age nineteen because the child is still in high school, the child is a full time student in a post-secondary school educational program, or the child was determined to be disabled by a federal or state agency. A custodial parent may also ask the court to extend child support

due to “exceptional circumstances” which are not defined in the statute. Courts will address this on a case by case basis. Child support cannot be required beyond the child’s twenty third birthday, although the statute gives a child over ago twenty three the right to sue a parent for other forms of financial maintenance or reimbursement, so long as it is not enforceable as child support. The statute does not define “other forms of financial maintenance or reimbursement”, nor does it indicate how to enforce these obligations or why they are not child support or enforceable as child support. Nothing in the new law prohibits a parent from asking a court to terminate child support prior to age nineteen or age twenty three, as the case may be, if the circumstances warrant.

And nothing in the act prohibits parents from agreeing that child support will be paid beyond age nineteen. It does, however, prohibit parents from agreeing that child support will be paid beyond age twenty three. The old law, in effect until February 1, 2017, requires child support until a child is emancipated, which involves a case by case analysis, and placed the burden on the parent paying support to convince the court that the child is emancipated. The new law shifts the burden to the parent receiving child support to convince the court that support should continue beyond age nineteen. As with most new statutes, it will take a while for the ambiguities to be worked out as it is applied to cases, each with its unique characteristics. But don’t be fooled. This is much more than a mere shift in the burden of proof.

TEENS AGAINST INTOLERANCE GROUP BRING MESSAGE TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STORY SUSAN MURPHY able to bring this impactful presentation to middle schools all over the county.” Six students from Teens Against Intolerance performed at Colts Neck Cedar Drive Middle School on February 19, 2016 before the student body. Cedar Drive Middle School Principal Colin Rigby shared, “The students impressed everyone with their poise, confidence, and powerful message. They encouraged all in attendance to breakdown stereotypes and celebrate one another’s differences. The presenters incorporated different scenarios, video clips, and personal stories to engage the audience and foster a deeper understanding of acceptance and tolerance. With pride, we watched Lily and Jackie, who are former Cedar Drive students, shine as they (alongside four of their peers) shared their important message with our student body.” COLTS NECK HIGH SCHOOL Student Lily Kreitzberg, who is 17, has

found a way to teach the youth of her generation about being tolerant and accepting of one another. She founded Teens Against Intolerance with a group of teens as a community service project. “Teens Against Intolerance is a way to help fix our relationships with each other so that we can effectively solve society’s other problems. As someone who was always passionate about serving the community and making a difference, it was difficult for me to decide which cause to support each time I started a new project. It is so difficult to prioritize between these issues, like helping the environment or feeding the hungry, but if we first fix how we treat each other, we can go into the world and make positive changes together. We hope to show students that the stereotypes they have been exposed to aren’t true, and that it’s beautiful to be unique, all while inspiring them to be more tolerant and accepting in their everyday lives,” explained Lily. She added, “The program was founded by and is run by teens, and the presentation is made up of original material. We are ready and avail-

The group is made up of students that represent the Jewish faith, Catholic Faith, Muslim faith, and Agnostic believers. The group was founded over a year ago, and the presentation given at Cedar Drive Middle School was also conducted at the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education at Brookdale, the United We Sing event, and at Martin Luther King Day celebrations. This was the first time the presentation was conducted in a school setting. Drawing from direct connection with nature, Permaculture gives us a set of principles and patterns for designing homes, businesses, landscapes, farms, and gardens that increase the health of the local ecosystem and move us beyond sustainability toward regeneration. Humans can be key players in ecosystem dynamics. Our goal should not be to reduce our ecological footprint to zero, but to create a positive impact for all through good design and management.

Mr. Walsh is a permaculture designer, ecological landscaper, and teacher based in north-coastal New Jersey. He holds a M.A. in Sustainable Landscape Design & Planning from The Conway School, with additional training in ecology, community food systems, agroforestry, permaculture design, and carbon farming. Sean offers consulting, design, and project actualization for clients within the greater New Jersey area who are interested in creating patterns of ecologically and socially sustainable land-use. Uncovering Hidden Epicurean Delights The Bronx and Red Bank Combine to Create … PATRICIA’S OF HOLMDEL IN THE COMMONS is a five-month-old, BYOB restaurant that appeared to be a stark and uninviting storefront until I entered and was impressed with the warmth and genuine friendliness of the staff. As you look beyond the hostess station to the sign “Patricia’s Est 2015” on the wall above the Wood Fired Pizza kitchen, you get a sense of the owners’ confidence that people will be enjoying exquisite home-style Italian cooking here for many years to come. Patricia’s is spacious with seating for 200 diners and sporting two large screen TV’s. The wood floors (or some wood-like composite) make a cleaner presentation than carpeting, in my opinion. The tables are elegantly set with full place settings on white tablecloths. The service is white-gloved without formality a very attentive service with a casual attitude. As waiters other than ours or bussers passed our table, they would make sure our glasses and bread basket were filled and eating utensils replaced. Everyone could answer questions about the menu. The banter among wait staff, bussers and owners is refreshing and reflects a team that likes coming to work. Being there for lunch in the middle of the week, there were only a few tables occupied and so we enjoyed the full attention of our waiter who was very willing to talk about the menu and the restaurant when he was not serving. My associate and I shared Nonna’s Meatballs ($9.95), Stuffed Artichoke ($10.95) and Uncle Sal’s Pizza ($14.95). Meatballs are one of the most unassuming foods, yet, when Patricia’s prepares them with three meats, savory seasoning and a scoop of Ricotta, they become Italian soul food. The homemade stuffing and lemon garlic dressing made the artichoke superb. We got some kick from Uncle Sal’s Pizza topped with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and long hots. At our request, they sat us at one of the many tables set for eight people and we were able to spread out our papers and accomplish much business in a pleasant atmosphere with great food. I vowed

My wife was in the mood for pasta with from the Lasseter Family Winery in Sonoma. What better place to enjoy that excellent wine sausage and without tomato gravy which, and a bottle of Pinot Grigio than at Patricia’s! unfortunately, is not on the menu. No We made reservations for three and found the problem. The waiter suggested an adaptahostess very accommodating even after we had tion of an item with broccoli rabe and garlic to change the time twice, finally arriving at “Alla Salvatore style” ($18.95). It is notewor7:15 on a Sunday night. The place was packed thy that at Patricia’s the pasta is served molto but we were seated immediately. Water glasses al dente (firm to the bite) and, unlike some were filled, wine poured and bread (the stuffed Italian cuisine, garlic does not overpower any bread is to die for) were brought to the table dish but adds a savory, spicy flavor. My son very quickly. The waiter went through a short had the Seafood Fra Diablo ($29.95) served in list of specials, giving the price of each item a kettle. It was tasty but not spiced enough (without us having to ask) and then gave us for his taste. I ordered the Baby Lamb Chops some time to decide. When the restaurant is ($29.95) but panicked when I saw Lenny busy, the entire order must be placed at the leaving before my order would have been same time but the kitchen managed it perfect- started. Well, Lenny has a superb staff because ly with every course unrushed and entrées the color and temperature of the meat was perfect and the gamey, slightly sweet taste of served hot. All the owners are present on weekends, the lamb fared well with the slightly bitter so we were able to meet Sal, who is part of taste of the broccoli rabe. You must end the family that owns Patricia’s in the Bronx; with coffee and consider desserts. We took Lenny, who was formerly the chef at Pazzo in advantage of the best dessert buy. Three small Red Bank; and Frank, who, as best as I can canola, with cream imported from Sicily ($4). The restaurant also has two family style tell, owns a commercial printing business but wanted to get involved in a quality restaurant menus, one at $45 per person and one at $55 business in this area. He certainly picked the per person with some interesting selections. Some Sunday we will return for Nonna’s right two partners to make that happen. There were many interesting appetizers to Sunday Sauce with homemade Bracciole, choose from. With difficulty we settled on Italian Sausage, Veal, Beef and Pork Meatballs the Seafood Salad with octopus, calamari and in D.O.P San Marzano Tomato Sauce served baby shrimp and Patricia’s Pizza with figs, baby over Rigatoni ($29.99). So, you can’t tell a book by its cover. Patriarugula, goat cheese and sprinkled with truffle oil. Each was $15.95. The lemon parsley cia’s of Holmdel may look stark and uninviting dressing on the salad was wonderfully delicate, from the outside but it’s warm and friendly on but the seductive aroma from the truffle oil the inside where the patrons join in singing sent us to heaven. We shared the Beet Salad “happy birthday” while they continue to enjoy ($12.95) served with baby arugula and goat their exquisite Italian cuisine selections. It is cheese that had a generous portion of baked located at 2132 Route 35, Holmdel, New Vermont Goat Cheese on top. We also shared Jersey 07733. STORY SUSAN MURPHY

FORMER COLT S NECK RESIDENT DIVES INTO

GENETIC TESTING Alexander Bisignano Named Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2015 Recombine is a clinical genomic testing company that was co-founded by former Colts Neck resident Alexander Bisignano. A 2005 graduate of Colts Neck High School and a 2009 graduate of Princeton University, Bisignano has a degree in Molecular Biology. “I became interested in biology in my freshman year at Colts Neck High School when I took AP Biology. It was incredible to learn about our understanding of biology, genetics, and the many unknowns that still exist. Biology is fundamentally the study of how organisms work, and as human beings we are still in the process of truly understanding our own biology,” shared Bisignano, who now lives in New York City. His professional background includes being the founder and CEO of Chromosoft, a consulting company, from January 2010 through March 2011. “I founded Chromosoft when I first started writing software in the fertility and genetics world. It definitely was a stepping stone on my way to Recombine. Many of the projects I worked on afforded me with opportunities to learn more about the various genetic technologies, laboratory processes, and genomic applications that ultimately were incorporated into Recombine. This is an interesting company because of the diversity of fields of study that must be properly combined to achieve our goal of expanding the scope and impact of genomics in medicine. We have experts in clinical genetics, infertility, genomics, computer science, not to mention commercialization, operations, logistics, and medical billing. My personal exposure in many different positions prior to Recombine was very helpful in planning our path forward.” Recombine was started in 2011. Joining Bisignano as cofounders are Dr. Santiago Munne and Kelly Kettesron. “Dr. Munne is one of the most well-known names in Reproductive Medicine; and Ms. Kettesron is one of the most talented embryologists in the world. Both have been immensely helpful mentors and co-founders,” said Bisignano. Beginning in 2012, Recombine was able to raise $3.3 million needed for its startup. “FirstMark Capital is our major investor and an excellent partner. They have been very big believers in our business and in our mission,” noted Bisignano. He added, “We launched our first test at the end of 2012.” Recombine offers CarrierMap for clinical ‘Carrier Screening.’ Bisignano explained, “CarrierMap is our

proprietary genetic test for over 300 monogenic recessive disorders. We generally offer our test through physician referrals, such as IVF Clinics, Ob/Gyn offices and most of our customers are couples thinking about having a child. The test will let them know if they are at any increased risk of passing on one of these severe genetic illnesses.” Some examples are Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Tay Sachs, and Canavan Disease. “These are diseases that have a highly negative impact on quality of life and can significantly shorten a child’s lifespan,” he noted, and added, “Prior to our technology, the majority of testing for these diseases were performed by LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics utilizing much older technology. Each disease would cost as much as $1,000 to $3,000. On CarrierMap, we can test for all 300 diseases at once, and as we’re generally covered by private insurance, patients pay as little as $95 out of pocket.” Bisignano emphasized that Laboratory Developed Tests are regulated under the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendment (CLIA). “Our laboratory is a CLIA certified lab located in Livingston, New Jersey. Beyond CLIA, many states have licensure requirements, New York State being the most restrictive. We’ve obtained licensure in all required states as well as the State of New York on our CarrierMap test.” Bisignano explained that Recombine provides genetic consultations across the globe in over 10 languages. “We find that the correct communication of information is extremely important in ensuring patients fully understand, and can make the most informed decisions about their health.” In fact, they regularly present clinical and scientific findings at academic and medical conferences. “The Fertility 2015 conference in the United Kingdom was where we presented data on couples that were identified to carry mutations in the same disease (i.e. these couples had exceptionally high risk of having children with genetic disease). We looked at the impact of this information on decision-making (whether or not the couple used donor egg/sperm, elected for diagnostic procedures, etc.). It’s important to ensure that the information we provide is being utilized properly by couples and healthcare providers.” The future holds much for Recombine. “Carrier Screening is just the beginning of how we are applying our technology,” said Bisignano. “We will soon be launching testing to help predict sudden cardiac events, predisposition for high cholesterol, as well as a test to help individuals understand if they are at risk for infertility (as well as how best to treat their infertility). We believe that ultimately every area of medicine can use genomics to help personalize treatments and improve outcomes.” Twenty-eight-year-old Alexander Bisignano made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015. He shared, “This was a very wonderful recognition for me, and it certainly was great PR for Recombine as well. Honestly, it’s not one person who builds a company, and I’m thankful to be working with an incredible team of scientists, engineers, genetic counselors and all around wonderful individuals who are committed to our mission.” For more about screening and Recombine, visit www. recombine.com.

They displayed skills like fire starting, tying knots and lashings and first aid skills which was a lot of fun and a great way to practice skills. Next up for the Troop will be going on a trip to “The Sterling Mines” in New Jersey, where the scouts will be able to tour a cave where the walls are lined with shining, flourescent and sparkling minerals. The scouts in the troop love diverse camping trips which are fun and provides avenues for further learning. Other upcoming camping trips include Rifle &

Shotgun Shooting in Southern NJ, zip lines at Ockanickon and canoeing on the Delaware River. In summer, the troop will be going to two camps. The first one is the Summit in Virginia for high adventure activities such as: zip lining, swimming, Troop 290 Scouts at Klondike Derby at Quail Hill shooting, mountain biking, white water rafting and much more. The second summer camp the troop will be attending is Forestberg, where the scouts have fun and earn merit badges. There are scouts from other troops who attend same classes and camps, which gives the scouts the opportunity to make new friends, while learning new skills. Boy Scouts is for boys 11-17 years old. For more information, email Join@Troop290.com. If you’re looking for information on Cub Scouts, for boys in first through fifth grades, visit www. Pack90NJ.com.

Time is Running Out… The time is near for CNBA’s biggest event of the year – a networking luncheon held at Trump National Golf Club. It will be held on March 15, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at coltsneckbusiness.org. The event is open to all; be sure to get your tickets soon, they usually sell out! CNBA members can also advertise their businesses at this event in three different ways: purchasing a vendor table, providing a small item with your logo (e.g. pen, flashlight) to be put in a “swag bag” that will be given to each attendee, or donating a gift basket to be raffled off. Don’t miss this great opportunity to grow your business in 2016.

The CNBA voted to sponsor and support the initiative to bring back the Independence Day Fireworks to Colts Neck! Tom Hennessey, Director of Colts Neck Department of Parks and Recreation has offered his services to work with the CNBA. This wonderful community event has been sorely missed the past few years, and we are delighted to say that the fireworks display will be on July 3, 2016, which will be a great celebration of our country’s 240th Anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Library. All are welcome. Coffee and muffins are graciously provided by Perkins Restaurant. Support: Let’s support our communities. There are so many ways.

You can go to Danny’s Steakhouse and Sushi on Bridge Street in Red Bank in the month of March and order their community cocktail (with or without alcohol any time, any day) which is the Margarita and support Project Write Now! Project Write Now is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people of all ages become better writers as they gain the confidence, skills, and insight needed to reach their personal, academic, and professional goals. We are committed to building a vibrant writing community that supports, inspires, and motivates. Every drink ordered gives Project Write Now $5.00. We can also support all our communities by going to their St. Patrick Day parades and their Easter egg hunts. You can support the award winning Tower Players and go see Bonnie and Clyde the musical on Friday or Saturday, March 18 and 19, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., or Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional HS.

Lincroft Presbyterian Church Raises $1,500 for 180 Turning Lives Around & Family Promise of Monmouth County

W

hile some people celebrated Valentine’s Day with a card, a romantic dinner, gold-foiled chocolates in a heart-shaped box or a bouquet of beautiful red roses, members of Lincroft Presbyterian Church took the matters of love straight to the heart, and hosted a Chili Cook-off and a Unity in Diversity Jazz Service to benefit two neighbors, 180 Turning Lives Around and Family Promise of Monmouth County immediately prior to the day of love. The two events raised more than $1,500 for these two organizations, which offer the only places of sanctuary in Monmouth County for families facing domestic violence or homelessness.

Jack Fowler and Chef Joe Musa sampled each of the 13 entries and chose winners for first and second place: Holmdel’s Jenna Sheldon won a $100 MasterCard gift card donated by Two River Community Bank/Middletown branch for her venison chili, while Middletown’s Marianne Ziegler and her “Hawt Stuff” chili won both second prize ($50 gift certificate to Luigi’s Famous Pizza & Queso’s/ Lincroft) and the praise of the people as the People’s Choice award winner (two free entrees courtesy of The Turning Point Restaurants). Guests also won door prizes donated by family and friends and local businesses: Acme/Lincroft, Zoni’s Coal Fired Pizza, and AutoZone.

Way to the Heart Travels through the Stomach

Funds raised from the evening will help 180 furnish the new safe house that opens in early spring 2016.

More than 60 people came hungry and left nourished in body, mind and soul, and raised more than $500 for 180 Turning Lives Around on February 6, 2016. Beautiful décor from colorful sombreros to the bright red and gingham tablecloths, votive candles and “chill” tunes transformed the room as cowboy boot-clad guests “taste tested” their favorite chili and voted for the People’s Choice Award. director at Belmar Presbyterian Church; Guitarist Doug Clarke, an in-demand jazz sideman, and a prodigy of Tal Farlow; Drummer John Gronert who has performed with The Drifters and Darius Brubeck, and was a student of Joe Morello and Sonny Igoe; String Bass and Guitarist Robert Marriner who has played with the Platters, Little Anthony, the Duprees and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. “Unity in Diversity, the theme for the third annual jazz vespers service, is our response to the ugliness that we see in the media these days. With this service we celebrate our differences as well as what we have in common. Our aim is to build bridges and relationships among people who don't necessarily share the same faith traditions,” says Diane R. Ford. The evening, which raised $1,000, was dedicated to the work of Family Promise of Monmouth County, the only organization providing shelter to homeless families in the county. The organization relies on a network of 22 congregations, including LPC to host and support families during their time of transition.

Ranney School Students 

Enter Unique Partnership with United Nations & Monmouth University to Educate the Community about Global Sustainability THROUGH THIS FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND PARTNERSHIP, Ranney School is working with Monmouth University, in collaboration with the United Nations Division of Sustainable Development (UN-DESA), and with the UN Department of Public Information (UN-DPI), to educate students and the broader community, about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopted unanimously by the UN member states in September 2015, these 17 goals aim to ensure a life of dignity and fulfillment for everyone worldwide by the year 2030. The SDGs build upon the Millennium Goals, the UN’s 2000-2015 universal agenda. Guided by expert professors at Monmouth University, Ranney high school students are spending this school year researching and proposing implementable solutions to selected targets of the SDGs, such as reducing global poverty, achieving equality and universal access to education, and environmental and economical targets. Ranney School and Monmouth University are among the first schools worldwide to have this unique partnership role with the UN-DESA. Named the “Youth Involvement in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the initiative was approved as an official Partnerships for SDGs, and is being funded by UN-DESA. Monmouth University Assistant Professor Dr. Patrizia Bonaventura is leading the partnership and works directly with Ranney School’s History Department Chair Dr. Noel Delgado and the students. Seven Monmouth University professors—all experts in key topics associated with the SDGs—are working with the students during their research phase this winter by providing lectures and hands-on learning opportunities

at both schools’ campuses. For example, the professors are addressing subjects such as climate change, clean water, partnerships for establishing peace, economic growth, marine biology, global health, and women in education. In addition, a UN representative is expected to address the group and the students are participating in key youth forums at UN Headquarters in New York City. Students will work in small groups or individually throughout the spring to create project-based solutions for selected SDG targets that they plan to present at UN Headquarters in New York City in June 2016. “Ranney School’s partnership with Monmouth University and the United Nations on the new Sustainable Development Goals will be instrumental in preparing our students and community on becoming active participants of a global community,” added Ranney’s Dr. Delgado. “This program will aid our students in understanding their emerging roles as global citizens - to recognize that each of us must play a part in contributing and shaping our global community, how we live together and share or limited resources.” Dr. Delgado also serves as the advisor of Ranney School’s Global Citizens Signature Program, which provides students an opportunity to examine global issues in a classroom setting and then discuss them globally through virtual exchange tools.

THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SPCA Hosts Official Grand Opening of New Pet Pantry

THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SPCA hosted its official Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of their new Pet Pantry Building on January 29, 2016. Attendees of the event included State Senator Jennifer Beck, Freeholders Serena DiMaso, John P. Curley and Tom Arnone, Sherriff Shaun Golden, County Clerk Christine Hanlon, Eatontown Mayor Dennis Connelly, as well as Wayne Pacelle, CEO of HSUS, Patrick McDonnell, creator of the comic strip MUTTS, MCSPCA CEO Chief Ross Licitra, Medical Director Dr. Nicole Feddersen, and many board members, supporters and staff. The Pet Pantry was established during Superstorm Sandy, when it became clear that people were being put in the position of having to choose between paying for their own necessities, and those of their beloved pets. Through generous donations and an outpouring of support from the community, the Pet Pantry started providing low-cost or free supplies to pet owners, resulting in fewer pets being surrendered to local shelters. For the last three years, the Pet Pantry was housed within the Maureen O’Brien Thrift Store, located at the Eatontown Shelter, but due to the overwhelming need, plans for a larger space were established. The pantry currently services over 1,100 families and with the opening of the new building it will be able to serve more.

Paul, Prince and Presley’s dad is an international superstar: the greatest tight rope walker of all time. But his fame has kept him a mystery to his family, leaving each son searching for his own way to soar to new heights. Written by one of Latin America’s leading contemporary playwrights, this moving new play reunites three brothers who try their best to walk the Ropes of life one step at a time.

The Pet Pantry accepts donations of dry dog food, wet dog and cat food, dry cat food, cat litter and some other supplies like leashes and cat toys. Funds raised through the Pet Pantry go towards purchasing food to stock the shelves and towards spay and neuter surgeries for pets receiving support through the program. To qualify for the MCSPCA Pet Pantry, you must have proof of spay/ neuter of your pet (or willing to spay/neuter), show proof of income, and provide a valid photo ID. The Pet Pantry is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

RED BANK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES Sign National Letters of Intent

OAK HILL ACADEMY MATH COUNTS TEAM Earns a New Honor!

Mrs. Rita Cotterell, an upper school math teacher at Oak Hill Academy, took a group of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to Union County College for the Math Counts competition for Middlesex, Union, and Monmouth Counties on Saturday, January 30, 2016. The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests. The program exists in all 50 states plus U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools. The team from Oak Hill competed against public, private, and parochial schools from those three counties in a multiround competition. The competition begins with a 30 question test covering every strand of mathematics in word problem format. The students then move on to the target round where they are given two high level word problems that need to be completed in six minutes. This is repeated four times for a total of eight questions. Subsequently, the top team from each school takes a test of 10 questions requiring teamwork and leadership. Oak Hill finished 1st out of all of the independent and parochial schools and 6th place overall! This is the second highest place that Oak Hill has ever finished after last year’s 2nd place, but on the individual side, it was the first time Oak Hill or any private school placed a student in the Top 10 individuals (200+ competed); and, the school placed two eighth graders - Thomas Wang and Michael Zhang. The Top 10 individuals compete head to head in the Countdown Round of fast paced math problems in front of the entire room of competitors, coaches and family members. It was bittersweet as Thomas and Michael had to go head to head at one point with Thomas emerging victorious and ultimately finishing 2nd overall while Michael was an impressive 6th. Thomas will now advance to the State rounds representing both Oak Hill and the three counties (Monmouth, Union and Middlesex) in our region. The team was made up of Thomas Wang, Michael Zhang, Jake Fradkin, Nicholas Geissler, Mason Garber, Grant D’Orsi and Alex Mitchell. They meet biweekly on Friday afternoons. Congratulations to Mrs. Cotterell and her team for such an outstanding accomplishment!
