ith spring in full swing and the weather just right, we finally are in a season that allows for outdoor events. We are happy to have our Local Events section back in our pages of Community Magazine (CM) – from festivals to outdoor concerts, flea markets and garden walks – our events section has it all on page 60. Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence will be hosting their inaugural 5K Walk/Run and Kids’ Fun Run fundraiser on May 31, 2015. This year’s 5K will be held in memory of beloved Satz teacher Señor Eric Hausser and will raise money for needs within the schools, CM is happy to be a sponsor of this event, and you can find more information on page 27. May is synonymous for Memorial Day, we all look forward to it, it has become our unofficial kick-off to the summer. To many folks, this is a three-day weekend of relaxation and barbecues with family and friends, but let’s not forget the true meaning of this federal holiday. We tend to overlook the fact this day is to commemorate our U.S. soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and we need to be reminded that our freedom, is in fact, not free. I would like to thank all our military service members, who have dedicated their lives for our freedom and who have kept us safe at home. We truly are in debt for your selfless service to us and our great nation.

NOW MORE THAN EVER, it is extremely important that we protect our personally identifiable information. With this in mind, the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Holmdel/Colts Neck office held their annual shredding event of confidential information for the members of our community. A steady stream of residents showed up throughout the day, ranging from one bag of papers to truckloads of business files which needed to be shredded- and all for FREE! Jonathan Keates, Branch Vice President said, “This is an annual event we offer as a service to our community. This year we tied the event to our collection for The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties hoping that the generous nature of our residents will help pay it forward to those who rely on the FoodBank. I would like to recognize Katie Kelliher from our office for her hard work of putting this event together and to Judy Daniels from The FoodBank who does such great work.” The Holmdel/Colts Neck office is still accepting donations for the FoodBank and is already planning for next year’s event!

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

Story Susan Murphy
Colts Neck Parent Raises Funds For Girls Softball Dugout COLTS NECK parent John Relay is on a mission. He recently started a GoFundMe account to raise money for much–needed upgrades to the girls’ softball dugout. His fundraising goal was $6,000 and within one week, he exceeded that amount! Relay and his wife Michele are the parents of Cassidy and Samantha, who are very active in the sports programs in Colts Neck. He has coached both girls’ basketball and softball over the past few years. After the realization that the teams needed revamping, a new program was put together by Relay and many other parents. Their joined efforts combined with the support of the Colts Neck Sports Foundation (CNSF) turned girls’ softball into a championship level program. The Colts Neck softball teams include girls who are age seven to twelve. “Our program has grown from 22 to 50 at the 9/10 level in just a few years and over 100 overall. The girls are learning and loving the game. We are excited about this coming season and are expecting great things for our girls,” said Coach Relay. Relay has been working closely with the CNSF to upgrade the Cedar Drive Middle School fields that are utilized as the Colts Neck softball teams’ home base. “With the help of John Satter, John Cifelli, the Colts Neck Sports Foundation’s president, Jeff Sponder, and donations from the softball players’ family and friends, we have already added a snack shed to the fields. The money collected from the GoFundMe fundraiser will also be used to put roofs on the dugout of each of the two the Cedar Drive softball fields. In addition, we will fix backstops and benches on the fields as well as add additional bathroom facilities. Other additions include a new base-lining machine, new bases, improved uniforms, and other equipment for the players,” explained Relay. He added that the Cedar Drive Middle School softball teams will benefit from the fields’ improvements; and the football program will have access to the snack shed during their playing season. The residents of Colts Neck have been extremely generous and supportive of the upgrades, said Relay. “For the past couple of years, our softball program has been growing and the desire to improve our program has led to this effort. Jeff Sponder has been working with the Colts Neck High School coach, Julie Saporito-Acuna which has led to Colts Neck High School softball players mentoring our softball players and assisting the coaches. These girls donate their time to help

our softball players develop their skills and provide motivation, encouragement and expertise. This mentorship is mutually beneficial and very much appreciated.” Relay explained what the support and funding will mean to the players and the program. “Both of my daughters have been a part of the softball program for the past several years. As both a parent and coach, I have wanted to make some positive changes to the program. With the help of the CNSF and other parent volunteer coaches such as Thomas Aquinas, John Satter, Jim Mager, Brian Post, Frank Vento, Jim Jordan, Philip Duddy, Mark McSorley, Don Johnson, Gary Klein, Steven Mondella, Keith Medvin and Robert Burns, we will continue to improve the program. We want our daughters to know that they have a place to call their own. We are very appreciative of the many donations that have led to us exceeding our goal. It goes to show how a community can come together to get a job done!” More information can be found at www.gofundme.com/ rg72jks.

Lincrof t Li t t le League’s
Special Opening Pitch
ON APRIL 18, 2015, Lincroft Little League (LLL) held their Opening Day ceremony and parade.
This year was special as Jack Esposito - a 5th grader at Lincroft Elementary School and Lincroft Little League/Lightning player, who was diagnosed August 2014 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - threw the ceremonial opening pitch to start off the much-anticipated season. The Lincroft Little League goal for the day was to raise funds to support Team Jack, which was created by the family centered care team of doctors, nurses and social workers at the Monmouth Medical Center’s Valerie Fund to support Jack throughout his treatment. He is the captain and in charge. Team Jack is also the name of their team walking the 10th annual Valerie Fund Walk in June. Opening Day patrons could buy a combo food item at the Snack Bar called Team Jack, with the profits donated to the cause; friendship bracelets were also for sale; and a raffle of baseball & softball themed gift baskets were raffled off throughout the day. Lincroft Little League chose Jack to throw the ceremonial first pitch because despite this incredibly massive challenge he faces, he stays positive, focused and determined to persevere - all qualities that make great people, and also make great athletes, which he is. Jack has been with LLL for five years, last year he played on the Rockies with Coach Krall, who were division champions. He also plays on their travel league, the Lincroft Lighting with Coach Felice. But that’s not all. In addition to baseball, Jack plays a variety of other sports including basketball and golf, as well as a swimmer on the Red Bank YMCA swim team.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I WANTED TO THANK those who came out to listen to a topic that has dominated many conversations as well as social media these past few weeks. For those of you who could not attend, I wanted to provide an overview of what transpired. We understand the topic of the Capelli Project is controversial and I would appreciate your time in explaining where we stand. First and foremost, I want to make it clear that my number one priority as Mayor is to protect the interests of Holmdel and its residents. In order to do so, we need to keep an open-mind while listening to options for the use of our land. Change can be intimidating, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is wrong. We have a significant challenge that Holmdel faces over the next decade. We have farmland and other parcels that property owners want to sell. Although houses can be beautiful, if we allow more residential development, it can bring a huge expense to our infrastructure. Farmland Preservation is another option. This essentially means that we buy the land. It is a nice theory to think that we can preserve the rural character and increase the value of current homes by limiting development. However, the problem here is twofold. Our open space tax currently does not cover the debt services of the land that we have already purchased. Every year hundreds of thousands of dollars are needed from our general budget just to cover these past purchases. In addition, we have no playbook to cover the maintenance and landscaping costs of what is not township land. Our last option is Commercial Use. This can provide a ratable, jobs and desired services for residents. Commercial use can also bring traffic, pollution and the risk of not fitting the character of that neighborhood. Each of these solutions has its pros and cons. These choices are inevitable for our future, which means it is imperative to make the proper choices for Holmdel’s future. With the facts now on the table, I would like to tell you why we even entertained the idea of these fields. For the record, for every negative comment we have heard, we have had one in support. Even residents in South Holmdel expressed opinions that these fields would fit the character of Holmdel more so than housing developments. With that said, we were merely listening to options, we never committed to any plan. You will not see this in the papers because they have become incredibly biased. The truth is that this project, regardless of its potential benefits, has divided our community. The outcome is the opposite of what I was trying to accomplish. Our main concern, my main objective as Mayor is to represent your voices. Therefore, we will NOT proceed 20

with supporting the Capelli Project. I would like to publicly thank George Altirs and The Capelli Group for wanting to be a part of our great community. During all the chaos, no one was able to see the man who really wanted to give back and invest in our town. In addition, three weeks ago we introduced a new ordinance in the R4 Zone that would have replaced the ordinance from back in August allowing for recreation in this space. We have formally rescinded that introduction. I truly appreciate resident feedback, but I would like to request that you also listen with an open-mind and try not to get caught up in the hype or gossip. We need to work together as a team with the same goal in mind, protecting Holmdel. Our jobs are easier with active residents. We want your continued intellectual content, but we also need to disengage with the outlandish speculations. To comment that, “A sports complex will bring heroin dealers” is ridiculous, alarming and helpful to no one. Secondly, accusing this Committee of not being transparent is simply false. I cannot help that the media does not cover us like they did pre-internet days. Communicating to the public is one of our main goals. As proof, Committeeman Critelli has led a charge to get each and every resident signed-up for our website so that everyone can be aware of what’s happening within our town. We had less than 100 names at the start of the year and I’m proud to say that now we have over 2,700 residents signed up for communications. It takes time to do our research and homework. However, even through this time, the public has always had online access to our weekly agendas. I am extremely proud of how hard we work to communicate openly with the public. I heard your voices, now please hear mine. I was saddened when my character was called into question and I wasn’t given the benefit of the doubt regarding my agenda for Holmdel. Through it all, my integrity and commitment remains strong. I took this job to serve Holmdel and protect it. This is a role that I have grown to love and will continue to do throughout my tenure. I am a resident, a parent and a coach who walks the same streets and hallways as the rest of you. We are a collective team and should not be divided. I hope in the future, differing opinions expressed at Township Committee meetings can be treated with dignity and respect with the same end result in mind, Holmdel’s prosperous future. Thank you for your time and I look forward to a continued team effort while navigating the future of Holmdel.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT FISHERMEN KILL between 26 and 73 million sharks every year for their fins, which are the central ingredient in shark fin soup. This staggeringly large toll has been amassed, for the most part, in regions of the world where shark finning is unchecked and the trade in fins largely unregulated. In sum, it’s been a race to the bottom to kill as many sharks as possible, mainly to procure a tasteless ingredient in an appetizer. New Jersey’s market for shark fins fuels the demand for the product with close to a dozen restaurants in New Jersey selling shark fins. For more than 400 million years, sharks have inhabited the oceans and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the ocean’s ecosystem, yet many shark species today are being pushed to population collapse and possibly extinction by this trade. Shark finning as is customarily done, involves a fisherman hauling a shark from the water, cutting its fins off, and then throwing the rest of the shark – often still alive – back into the ocean. This leaves the shark not only with gaping, mortal wounds, but also with no ability to swim. The creature is doomed, and the death a lingering one. Fortunately, S.2057/A.4093 has been introduced to stop the trade in shark fins and shark fin products in New Jersey. The bipartisan Senate bill passed though the full Senate in March and now awaits posting in the Assembly. California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Washington, and all three Pacific territories have enacted laws to restrict the sale and possession of fins. There is also good news from China. There, demand for the fins has fallen dramatically following a compelling public awareness campaign. All of these measures have overwhelming support from a range of stakeholders, including marine ecologists, animal welfare and ocean conservation organizations. And finning is banned in U.S. waters, too, under federal law. But, without state prohibitions, it’s next to impossible to ensure that fins traded in the U.S. do not come from finned sharks or endangered shark species. That’s why The HSUS and Humane Society International are continuing to work in state legislatures to close markets for shark fins by banning their sale and trade. As a major coastal state, New Jersey has demonstrated leadership in ocean conservation in the past. We can continue that proud tradition by passing S.2057/A.4093 to protect sharks from massive slaughters and ensure that New Jersey breaks its connection to shark finning. Please contact your two state Assembly members and urge them to support A.4093. You can find their contact information at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us and for more information on the shark fin trade, please visit our website at http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/sharks/

Holmdel Cub Scout Packs Hold Annual Blue and Gold Ceremony
ON FEBRUARY 20, 2015, Holmdel Cub Scout Packs 131 and 331 held their annual Blue and Gold Ceremony at Satz School. The Blue and Gold ceremony signifies the end of a boy’s Cub Scout journey and the beginning of their tenure as a Boy Scout, and is an evening of celebration honoring the scouts’ achievements. The Blue and Gold ceremony is held every February during Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) anniversary month and draws its name from the Cub Scout colors - blue and gold. At this year’s ceremony, a record 22 boys from four dens advanced to Boy Scouts by crossing over a wooden bridge to be met on the other side by their new BSA troop. Troops 131, 331 and 454 received them, with each scout having chosen their troop based on their shared interests. They received from their troop their new neckerchief to kick
off their Boy Scout adventures. These outstanding youth were active in Cub Scouts for over four years, and each had completed numerous civic and charitable service activities. They had fun at campouts and camp-ins on the carrier USS Intrepid, battleship USS New Jersey, Franklin Institute, Lakewood Blue Claws Stadium, American Museum of Natural History, and each local national, state and county park, as well as hikes, skating, skiing, and more throughout the five state area. Each scout had a wealth of experiences from earning their awards. Many of the boys were also presented an award called The Arrow of Light. This is the highest possible rank earned in Cub Scouts and is a significant honor. To earn it, each scout completed at least seven required activity badges (many earned quite a few more than that!) and participated in an overnight campout and visit with their Troop. The evening included a welcome message from Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds, the flag ceremony by a scout-led color guard, award presentations, warm send-offs for the advancing scouts’ parents, and a musical skit performed by the scouts. The event concluded with desserts and refreshments for everyone. It was a wonderful evening full of laughter, proud parents, and very happy “newlyminted” Boy Scouts. Best wishes to all!

Over 790 essays were submitted from both public and private schools in Monmouth County. Additionally, he came in third place on the New Jersey State level. He was presented with a certificate and Daughters of the American Revolution medal. In honor of the 125th Anniversary of Ellis Island, the theme for 2014-15 was: “Imagine you are a
child traveling through Ellis Island in 1892. How would you describe your experience to a cousin who has never heard of Ellis Island?” Students were required to create a fictional character and write about what it would be like to be processed through Ellis Island. This is the second time Reece Horneck has won the DAR essay and he was just thrilled this time as the last. The DAR society presented a warm and welcoming ceremony at Shrewsbury Borough Hall on April 13, 2015. Ladies Auxiliary Hi-Lo Game Members of the Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary held their annual Spring Hi-Lo Game on March 27, 2015. Over 80 people attended, which helped to make the fundraiser a very successful evening. Auxiliary President Bridget Matthews said, “The money raised will be used to provide equipment, social functions for the Firemen and their families and also any items needed for the Ladies Auxiliary to help the men when they are on standbys.” The evening is geared towards fun and socializing with friends. Guests bring their own beverages and their snacks range from veggie and cheese platters to homemade desserts. Longtime Auxiliary member Lucy Kennelly said, “The ladies look forward to this, especially the silly prizes when they win. It’s great fun and there is always laughter, joking, and munching!” Many of the 20 gift baskets that were raffled off during the evening were donated by local businesses. The baskets included a bouquet of fresh flowers; numerous scratch-offs; a childthemed basket; golf-themed basket; gift cards; and many more great items. The winner of the 50/50 was thrilled to receive $205. Linda Scheurer, who was one of the first winners,

opened her prize to find a box of chocolate crunch candy. The prize for Christine Nolan was a set of grilling plates; and Mary Mahoney opened a striped plastic cup with attached curly straw. Many more prizes were given throughout the night and the guests enjoyed each one of them. “We are very thankful to the community for coming out to support us twice a year at our Hi-Lo. It is wonderful to hear all of the laughter and see everyone have such a good time. And at the same time they are benefiting the Fire Company,” said President Matthews. She added, “Many people are not aware that Middletown Fire Fighters are volunteer and each fire company gets only a small budget from the town and the rest of their needs are met by contributions from the community. On behalf of the Station 10 Ladies Auxiliary and Fire Company, I would like to personally thank all of our members who help out, our vendors who contribute to our events, Community Magazine and Susan Murphy for always covering our events and most important, the people that attend our events and for all they do to support us."

BOTTOM LEFT: Annabelle Zasowski of Colts Neck played Katie (the daughter) in Hello Flo’s First Moon Party video, which went viral and has had over 30 million views! If you haven’t seen it, check it out at www.youtube. com/watch?v=NEcZmT0fiNM.
Colts Neck Teen On Her Way to
S U CC E S S F U L C A R E E R WITH JUST ONE YEAR OF AUDITIONS UNDER HER BELT, thirteen-year-old Annabelle Zasowski is eager to try it all – commercials, Nickelodeon, ESPN, MTV web series, and now a movie! The Colts Neck resident attends Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) in Manhattan and is in the eighth grade. She loves to cook and play Lacrosse, and when not auditioning, she loves to hang out with her friends, especially the ones in New Jersey. “Acting and singing have gotten in the way of these things but it’s all worth it because they are the only things that make me feel the most like myself,” shared Annabelle. Acting was always her passion but she never tried it. Annabelle said her sister was the one into singing and acting, while she focused on sports. She explained how all that changed. “One day my grandfather passed away and I didn’t feel like sports was my thing anymore. He came to every single game and he was a big part of that for me so at the time it was too painful to play. Then I accidentally fell into singing and then acting and here we are today!” Although Annabelle began auditions when she was 12, her first job was at age 10 when she did a voice over for YMCA of Greater New York with Dutch Productions. Her first audition was for a Red Lobster commercial. She wasn’t nervous and was surprised to get a call back. “Even though I didn’t get it, I was not, and never will be deterred,” said Annabelle. Another great opportunity was playing Katie, the daughter, in Hello Flo’s First Moon Party video, which went viral. According to Annabelle, as of mid-April, the video has had close to 31 million views. “This was actually surreal for me because I had no clue it was going to go viral! I think I expected no more than 100,000 and it completely exceeded my expectations!” She added that another “really cool” thing to happen was when she did a video for a popular YouTube channel run by The Fine Brothers. The video was of the elders reacting to the First Moon Party, and as of mid-April there were close to three million views, said Annabelle. Annabelle recently played Emily, a teenage daughter, in AT&T’s newest commercial. “This was an amazing experience not only because it is a national commercial that plays constantly on every channel, but I was flown to Los Angeles for three days to film it with all expenses paid. I loved working with everyone on set, both cast and crew members; and was really excited to be working with “Lilly” from AT&T.” Some of Annabelle’s other credits include a Nickelodeon short called Hall Stars in which she played a tough, popular hall monitor named Jo Kale. A Monster High commercial in which she played Katie, a werewolf, promoting Nickelodeon’s new “BOOvie” Frights, Camera, Action! Four Denny’s commercials in which she played a girl in four different school settings that explains many different educational ways to enjoy Denny’s combination meals. “That was really fun considering I had four different wardrobe changes in the four separate commercials.” Add to these a short comedy skit for ESPN that has not yet
Story Susan Murphy
aired but was “really fun to work on!” Annabelle said she just recently finished filming an MTV web series SMS. “I play Lyla Green, a young girl who is actually the boss of a social media crime stopping department. The funny part about the whole concept is that I am the boss of a group of adults! This was released in April.” Two current projects are filming a commercial for a new Despicable Me toy by the end of April and filming a new movie, Five Doctors. “I play a teenage student named Amber. I was fortunate enough to film this movie with a great cast and crew including the amazing Bobby Moyniham from Saturday Night Live. The three co-writers/co-directors of the film are Matt Porter, Phil Primason, and Max Azulay. It was absolutely great working with them!” Annabelle believes going on all of the auditions is well worth it. “I think working in movies, shows and TV commercials has made me a more mature person. I am now treated like an adult and I can completely handle it. I work very long hours and travel often, but I have to act mature and responsible. It’s nothing I can’t handle, though. I love working long hours, and traveling and meeting new people. It’s really not a big struggle like some would think because this is something that I absolutely love doing. Of course sometimes I get tired, but it is the price I have to pay if someday I want to be a famous singer and actress. I have always been a confident, outgoing and fun girl, now acting and singing has just let me show that to the world!” Her advice to anyone who would like to do what she does is given with strong conviction. “If it’s something you really want to do, you can never give up. You are not going to get every job you go out for or even a call back for everything. I didn’t, of course. But then I just shake it off and keep going and don’t stop until I get another job, and another and another. You also just have to be yourself and not be afraid of anything. That’s what people will love the most about you, and they can tell whether or not you’re confident and being yourself. Because at the end of the day, if you don’t get that job, you can just keep trying until you get another one.” Annabelle’s parents are her strongest supporters and assist her in following her dream. Her mother Nancy said, “I think the greatest part of this experience is that it hasn’t changed her in the slightest. Annabelle was always a free spirit and very confident but more so compassionate and caring and she has remained so in spite of her success.” Annabelle said of her father, “My Dad is my voice and acting coach and all of the credit for what I achieve is thanks to him.” Annabelle thanked Community Magazine (CM) for giving her this wonderful opportunity to share her passion and the success she is achieving with her singing and acting career. If you know someone doing something extraordinary in your community, please email us at info@communitymagazinenj.com today. Community Magazine (CM) would love to feature them in one of our upcoming issues.

FOR 20 YEARS NOW, Mike Marshall and Ted Koczon have owned and operated the Perkins restaurant on Route 36 in Hazlet. Combined with their 60 years restaurant experience, it’s no surprise that they have learned a few things along their journey. “It starts with the staff,” said Marshall, “without them, we would not have achieved this goal.” That goal was being ranked #1 overall with guest satisfaction within the entire company for 2014. “We have been fortunate to have an awesome community to serve,” said Koczon. “I didn’t thing that much about the achievement until we were presented the award in front of the entire company at our brand conference in Minnesota this past February,” said Marshall. The two owners have a distinct advantage over most of their competition since Koczon is a certified chef and Marshall is out in the front of the house to greet the guests. “Our guests have a lot of choices out there today than ever before,” added Marshall. Koczon expressed, “We are grateful for our wonderful staff (some who have been with us for 20 years) and our guests, definitely looking forward to another 20 years!”

DIVORCE TALK
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ.
Peter C. Paras is a shareholder in the Family Law Firm of Paras, Apy & Reiss, P.C. Selected as "Super Lawyer" by NJ Monthly 2006 – 2015 Included in Best Lawyers in America 2015 For more information please see the firm’s website at www.par-law.com. The information in this article is not intended as legal advice.
I HAVE TWO exceedingly good people and terrific lawyers as partners. When Patricia E. Apy and Bonnie M.S. Reiss joined with me to form our firm more than nineteen years ago, I could hardly have imagined what a wonderful personal and legal odyssey we would share. Last month we all traveled to the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C. to share another adventure. Trish deservedly received the 2015 American Bar Association Grassroots Advocacy Award for her work in getting the Sean and David Goldman International Child Abduction Prevention and Return Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama and for her support for legal protection for members of the military. Bonnie and I proudly attended the ceremony. David Goldman drove his five year old son, Sean, and his wife, Bruna, to Newark airport in June 2004 for their flight to Brazil to visit her family. He expected them to return three weeks
later. A few days after arriving in Brazil, Bruna telephoned David to tell him that she wanted a divorce and that she intended to remain in Brazil (where she was a citizen) with Sean. Shortly thereafter, litigation began in New Jersey and Brazil. As the custody battle raged on two continents for several years, Bruna got a divorce in Brazil, remarried, and became pregnant. Four years after leaving New Jersey she died in childbirth in Brazil. Thinking that he would then be allowed to bring his son, who he had not seen in four years, home to New Jersey, David travelled to Brazil only to find that Bruna’s second husband had been awarded custody of Sean by a Brazilian judge. David’s heartache was vividly captured in numerous newspaper and television accounts, as were his frustrating and largely fruitless travels to Brazil. However, through his love for Sean and his determination to get him back, the hard work of Trish and his Brazilian attorneys, and the intervention of the Supreme Court
Partners of Brazil and the United States Congress, Sean returned with David to New Jersey on Christmas Eve 2009. By all accounts, Sean is happy and flourishing. David, as you can imagine, is a very proud and devoted father. Trish was at her finest in the Goldman case. Her legal analysis and advocacy ultimately won the day in this very specialized area of international custody litigation. She has also litigated in Europe, the Middle East and Australia, just to name a few of the other foreign jurisdictions to which she has been called. However, her experiences in the Goldman case motivated her to push for federal legislation that would help other similarly situated American parents (there are thousands) retrieve their wrongfully abducted children more quickly and with less expense. The American Bar Association could not have made a better choice than to recognize her work on behalf of these parents. Bonnie and I are, indeed, proud partners.

Local Doctors Provide Relief to Syrian Refugees Story Susan Murphy
TOP LEFT PHOTO Dr. Salem Samra with his patient Reem. She had sustained a shotgun injury to her arm that had caused a paralysis in her right hand. Dr. Salem and Dr. Said Samra performed a tendon transfer surgery to help restore function in her hand and removed 16 pieces of metal shot from her arm. DR. SAID SAMRA AND DR. SALEM SAMRA of the Samra Group in Holmdel recently returned from a humanitarian mission in Amman, Jordan where they provided surgical treatment to Syrian refugees in need. The week-long trip, from March 6 to March 14, 2015 was the second mission for Dr. Salem Samra and the first out-of-country mission for Dr. Said Samra. Also traveling with the doctors was retired general surgeon, Dr. Bassam Kashlan of Ocean, New Jersey. “Salem, along with Dr. Kashlan and I responded to a request from the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) to help in providing reconstructive and plastic surgical procedures, as well as hand surgery helping numerous Syrian civilians, victims of the war in my birth country,” explained Dr. Said Samra. They were assisted there by local Syrian expatriate surgeons working in Jordan, noted Dr. Salem Samra. While Drs. Said and Salem Samra and Dr. Kashlan formed the surgical team, there were also thirty doctors and nurses from around the United States who shared their specialties to help those in need. In coordination with SAMS, Dr. Said and Dr. Salem hand-delivered approximately $100,000 in medical aid and equipment to a local charity hospital treating Syrian refugees in Jordan. “This was a gift to the hospital from the Syrian American Medical Society – Tri-State Chapter (NY/NJ/CT). The chapter raised funds towards the purchase of medical equipment including a brand new Zim-

mer Electric Dermatome and Mesher. These are instruments used for skin grafting procedures which are critically important to burn victims and others with war wounds,” said Dr. Salem Samra. Bayshore Community Hospital and the Wound Care Center at Jersey Shore University Medical Center donated much-needed supplies. The Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) donated a much-needed Acellular dermal matrix that was used in the management of complex extremity and abdominal wounds. “Our individual surgeons contributed personal donations including contributions from our surgical practice (The Samra Group). In total, we carried in excess of 500 pounds of supplies in suitcases, which including the state-of-the-art dermatome, mesher and needed accessories to perform skin grafting. These supplies were not available there previously and were delivered to the Hospital where we worked,” said Dr. Said Samra. The doctors noted that non-surgical care was provided at the Zaatari refugee camp in trailer-like facilities and tents, while surgical procedures were done at the Makased Hospital, a not-for-profit entity. The youngest person treated was five and the oldest was 56. They had war wounds consisting of burns, as well as hand and facial injuries. After the initial screening of patients, the doctors operated every day, performing 34 procedures on 15 patients, noted Dr. Salem Samra. CONTINUED ON PAGE 47 >>

“The charity hospital had modern anesthesia equipment and x-ray capability. We were given two operating rooms to work in simultaneously. Many of the modern amenities in an American operating room were missing such as microvascular surgery instruments and an operating microscope. We made due with the instruments we were given and performed microsurgical cases while there using our own surgical loupes,” explained Dr. Salem Samra. He added that the surgeries included lower extremity reconstruction, reconstruction of facial deformities, complex flap closure of pressure ulceration, tendon transfer, contracture release with skin grafting, nerve reconstruction with nerve grafting, and much more. “This type of work is rewarding for both patient and surgeon. These people are civilians: men, women, and children caught in a war zone. They are honest people, friendly and hospitable yet they are facing a desperate situation. They are not terrorists. They are families living in a refugee camp or slum with little to no resources. Providing them health care to give them some measure of relief in their daily life is a privilege and an obligation for us as doctors. We were as grateful for the opportunity to serve as they were for our help,” shared Dr. Salem Samra. “This experience has been the most exhilarating and fulfilling experience I ever had. The feedback from the patients and their loved ones
was unforgettable,” said Dr. Said Samra of his first out-of-country humanitarian mission. The doctors were grateful to SAMS and the Jordanian authorities for allowing them to offer the medical assistance so desperately needed. “Seeing severe disabilities and deformities inflicted on peaceful civilians to subdue the proud people of Syria and especially victims of Barrel bombs and torture is hard to imagine or forget,” said Dr. Said Samra. Given the magnitude of the crisis, the doctors’ efforts have only scratched the surface with regard to the need for medical assistance in all forms. Dr. Salem Samra noted, “From the basics of primary care and pediatrics, to the subspecialties such as plastic and orthopedic surgery, to the ancillary services such as physical therapy and nursing. Everything that is easily accessible here is hard to find or missing completely for these people. There are over 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, a small country with limited resources itself to support its native population, let alone guests that are approaching now 20% of its population.” Drs. Said and Salem Samra noted that any medical services that can be provided at no cost to the Syrian people is welcomed and desperately needed. SAMS (the Syrian American Medical Society) has an excellent organization on the ground in Jordan that can help coordinate medical mission trips and anyone with medical expertise interested in helping can participate.

Citizens Enjoy Hunterdon Hills Playhouse
“ABIE’S IRISH ROSE” was a hilarious play that the Colts Neck Seniors went to see at the beautiful Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in Hunterdon County. Fifty-five members boarded the bus at Town Hall on March 18, 2015 and arrived at the Playhouse in time for a lovely luncheon. There were several delicious choices and everyone enjoyed their selection, along with baskets of homemade breads. Then came the “piece de resistance” – a sumptuous dessert buffet – a room full of bite size desserts, which gave them the opportunity to sample many different kinds. Remember, if you are a Colts Neck resident, age 55 or older, you are welcome to call President John Walsh at 732.946.0591 to receive an application to join this fun and active group.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL (SJVHS) senior Nina Casola, of Holmdel, has been awarded the 2015 Caring Award. This award is given out by the Monmouth County Guidance Director Association (MCGDA) to one senior from each high school in Monmouth County who has exhibited exceptional care and compassion to a cause, group, or program during his/her high school career. Nina has been a volunteer in the SPUR Program (Special People United to Ride) since she was fourteen years old. The SPUR program is located at Sunnyside Equestrian Center in Middletown and is a non-profit organization that provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to achieve personal goals through therapeutic horseback riding. Nina regularly assists with lessons and various special activities for SPUR. She also helps with the Youth Horseback Riding programs and with the Summer Camp program. “I love working in the lessons for the therapeutic riding program for special needs children who are learning to ride.” Nina’s two favorite things are horses and children. She says, “I can’t put into words how I feel watching them work together. I love children and the fact that horses know how to help the children who need it the most is amazing and makes me happy.” Nina credits her Catholic education on teaching her the importance of helping others. She is in the French Club and is a member of the French Honor Society at SJVHS. Nina will be attending Wilson College in Pennsylvania, and is going to major in Equine Science and Therapeutic Riding. Nina attended the awards ceremony on March 19, 2015 at Brookdale Community College with her Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Margaret Burns and the Director of Guidance, Mr. Bill Bulman.

DINNER CHURCH May 26, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. This is a new venture in our church, but one that was started by the early church 2000 years ago. People are welcome to arrive at the church’s new Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m., and light a candle as they enter. Then each person will help prepare a simple meal. With songs, prayers, and discussion the meal is shared, ending with communion. We will plan to hold this on the 4th Sunday of each month. Come and see if it feeds your soul. Holmdel Community Church is located at 40 Main Street in Holmdel, you can also find them online at www.holmdelcommunityucc.com.

MANY OF TODAY’S small business owners will tell you they were businesssavvy from a young age. Some kids ran lemonade stands, others shoveled neighbors’ snowy driveways. One of the most successful women I know started out selling homemade milkshakes at age 8. She calculated costs ($.75 a shake), created a company name (Susie’s Sweet Shakes), and developed a sales strategy (door-to-door, delivered with a smile). Driven to Excellence CARISSA MARSHALL is more than just a real estate agent. She
comes from a position where she knows intimately about homes. She knows what sells, what doesn’t and what her clients need from their home. Organization, floor space, details, what it takes to keep a home and the kind of layout that parents may need from their living space isn’t lost to her. She is a newcomer to real estate, but her background prepared her well for her new career path. Carissa has been a stay-at-home mom for eight years. That experience, combined with her prior business experience makes her uniquely qualified to help her customers find their dream home. After a long and successful career in the fashion industry, Carissa decided it was time to move back into the workplace. The attention to detail that was necessary to keep a home and to excel in the fashion industry is reflected in her work as a real estate agent. Real estate is the perfect venue for her creative talents and her desire to be her own boss. Motivated and driven to enter the work world again, she needed something that allowed her to have it all. “The flexible schedule that I have as an agent allows me to be available for my clients and customers and still have the luxury of time for my family,” noted Carissa. Carissa enjoyed selling women’s fashions, but found that she wanted something that extended a greater challenge to her. The idea of helping someone find the perfect home, the perfect place to raise children or to spend quiet evenings appealed to her in several ways. While she enjoyed filling her customers’ closets with beautiful clothing, it was a greater challenge to help them to find the home that they desired. Ms. Marshall knows the competition out there in the work world today and she’s not the least intimidated. During her time in the retail fashion industry, she received sales achievement awards for exceeding store sales goals, and surpassing her own personal goals. She brings the same passion and drive to the field of real estate. More important to Carissa than the sales awards she received is the national recognition that she achieved for going above and beyond all requirements in customer service. In fact, you might say that customer service appears to be a family passion. Michael Marshall, Carissa’s husband is no stranger to excellence in customer service himself. Michael and his business partner Teddy Koczon own a local restaurant that has been consistently applauded for the level of customer service they offer to their customers. Their franchise restaurant, Perkins Family Restaurant in Hazlet (Airport Plaza) was recently awarded national recognition for their own customer service efforts. Carissa wants to be more than a real estate agent to her clients. She desires to be and in fact is seen as a trusted advisor in the search for a new home and more. Focusing on using the latest in real estate technology and ongoing training that allows her to provide more for her customers, Carissa makes it a point to be available to her clients. She takes the time to respond to their needs and concerns, and is her wish to establish long-term and lasting relationships with every client that she serves. Carissa is a member of the Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean Counties MLS and the National Association of Realtors and The New Jersey Association of Realtors. She may be reached directly at 908.601.8487, at Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate office at 732.264.3456 or by email at cmarshall@glorianilson.com.
