2015 Marks the 25th Anniversary of the
colts neck country fair!
FROM THE FIREMEN’S fair at Colts Neck Fire House #1 to today, locals have celebrated summer and the town of Colts Neck in a wonderful way. This year marks 25 years at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck with a host of things to see and do in the beautiful park that many will enjoy on August 20 through August 23.
RIDES, GAMES AND GREAT FOOD Once again we are welcoming back Majestic Midways, the premier ride provider in the tri-state area along with Games of Chance, Inflatables from Seashore Amusements and a great selection of food from Mom’s, Dellano’s, Dave’s French Fries from Englishtown Auction, Try Vegan, Johnny Boy’s Kitchen, Ralph’s Italian Ices and more!
NEW AND FAMILIAR ATTRACTIONS In addition to a host of non-food vendors, the fair welcomes the New Jersey Hall of Fame mobile museum and an antique fire truck on Thursday and Friday, the 4H 24 Carrot Rabbit club, Bayshore Dog Companion Club, the Lions Club Hole-in-One, Chris Clark Bicycle Stunts, and your favorite animated characters. Fireworks will be on opening night.
ENTERTAINMENT GALORE! The fair committee is very excited to welcome the Rock of Ages band featuring Constantine Maroulis from American Idol as the feature act on Saturday night. The Matt O’Ree Band kicks things off on Friday and Moroccan Sheepherders and Slim Chance and the Gamblers round out the headliners – as well as Alex English returning this year along with Chuck Schaeffer, Jo Wymer, Colts Neck Dance and a number of local music school bands. Another town favorite, Vappo the Clown will be back and the fair will have all of the kid’s favorite characters roaming the grounds as well. DIVORCE TALK
MORE EXPECTATIONS
PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ. Many years ago I represented a very nice woman. She made a nice appearance, spoke well and was polite. As mightily as we tried, we just couldn’t settle her case and wound up going to trial. I prepared her for her testimony, counselled her about how to act, and told her what to expect when we got to court. We agreed that she would wear a skirt and blouse or a dress.
First, expect the person you are divorcing to be the same person to whom you were married. Don’t expect your spouse to be someone (or something) he wasn’t during the marriage. All the behaviors he exhibits in the divorce are, no doubt, the behaviors that led you to want to divorce him. He is what he is and that’s all that he is. Change is probably not in the cards.
We were ready, I thought. She arrived at court wearing a very nice knee length dress and a cardigan sweater. Perfect, I thought. She was called to the witness stand and was sworn in. That’s when things went downhill. She removed her sweater which revealed a four inch diameter button she pinned to her dress that proclaimed in bold capital letters, “I WANT IT ALL!”
Second, you will experience more stress while going through a divorce than you can imagine. Even when you think you’re handling things well, you’re probably not doing as well as you think. Many people look back and realize this. It’s normal (as if anything about getting divorced is normal). We can divorce you from your spouse, but I haven’t found a way to eliminate stress from divorce. Expect it and try to develop strategies for coping with it. Eat regularly, pick a bedtime and stick to it (all nighters don’t help), and get physical activity (the gym, jogging, kick boxing, etc).
The judge was not amused. All our preparation and hard work was in vain. In one “unforced error” she gave away her credibility. Despite efforts at rehabilitation, we only regained a portion of her credibility. Whether she believed what her button said or simply thought it was funny, it illustrates how divorce litigants must be realistic about what they can expect from divorce. No one gets “it all”. Here are some things you can reasonably expect.
Third, you most assuredly will not get everything you want. Expect to compromise. Your spouse will want things, too. Sometimes they will be the same things you want. Settling a case requires compromise. If you are un-

fortunate enough to go to trial, expect the judge to see some issues your way and some your spouse’s way. I’ve tried several hundred cases over the years and no husband or wife has ever gotten everything he or she wanted. Make a list of your priorities so you can talk with your attorney about what is most important to you and what you would be willing to give up if you had to. That’s how settlements are made. Finally, expect to flourish after your divorce. There is life after divorce. Most clients report that, although the divorce was stressful and adjustments may be necessary in the immediate aftermath, a new sense of freedom and the release from the stress of a bad marriage and divorce provide a feeling of independence and, yes, happiness.

Colts Neck Rockfest 2015 is back again, and packed with talented local musicians! Plan to head over to Bucks Mill Park, located on Bucks Mill Road in Colts Neck on September 19, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. and September 20, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to this two-day event, the entry cost is $10 per car, with all proceeds benefitting the Colts Neck Fire Departments #1 & #2 and other various charities. Founder of the event Steve Warendorf started Colts Neck Rockfest in late August of 2008. “I had the idea to have a little free concert with a few musical acts at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. My point was always to utilize the beautiful spaces we have available in town,” said Warendorf. In 2008, the musical acts were the Moroccan Sheepherders, Bullet Bob and the Colts, as well as a few acoustic artists. “It was basically a backyard barbecue held at the park. There were probably 30 people in attendance. It’s interesting to note that this was the Moroccan Sheepherders’ very first NJ cover music gig, as we were an original act from 1996 until then,” added Warendorf, who is a member of this band. Warendorf said he enjoys putting together a couple of events throughout the year, sometimes raising money for charities. “With Rockfest, just being able to break even and be able to put smiles on people’s faces, musicians and event goers alike, while utilizing the great park that we have available as residents is great. The young bands have a great place to bring their friends and families to see them play, while also getting new exposure. As a musician and the event founder, I also get a chance to play during the concert in a couple of the acts I am involved with.” Warendorf is currently the guitarist for the Moroccan Sheepherders, Carnival Dogs, Snow Dog, Prog Legs and the SMA Project. Several of these are playing at Rockfest this year. Steve Warendorf and his wife Michelle grew up in Colts Neck and have lived there for more than 40 years. Other than a few years in Red Bank and a short FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT COLTS NECK ROCKFEST 2015, stint in Jersey City, he professes to definitely VISIT THE WEBSITE AS WELL AS THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE – COLTS be a “townie.” The Warendorfs have two NECK ROCKFEST, OR EMAIL COLTSNECKROCKFEST@GMAIL.COM. children, Robbie, 19, and Madeleine, 16. Colts Neck Rockfest has changed quite a bit since its first concert in 2008. The start and end times have increased to allow more bands to perform, and because of the success of the Rockfest 2014 – the concert is now spanning two days, instead of one! There are varied musical acts ranging from Reggae to Latin to Classic Rock to Original music. Many vendors selling hand crafted goods and services, as well as a few food vendors will also be on hand. “Throughout its seven-year existence, the event has always pleased both the young and old,” said Warendorf. In addition to the seasoned musical acts, every year young bands and acoustic acts are welcomed to play. Since Rockfest 2009, this has always been an important part of the day, said Warendorf. “Young people seldom get places to play so this is a good way for them to be seen and heard. In addition to more musical acts and vendors over the years, in 2012 we had our first bonfire at the event! And one thing that we will always try to keep constant is the notion of this still staying a community event. Most of the bands help out in some way, from helping with parking to set up to clean up.” Today, there is a team of people who help out with different aspects of Rockfest - from vendor management to bonfire setup and cleanup to parking to general setup and cleanup. They include Michelle Warendorf, Martha Leonhart, Glenn Taglieri, Joe Bongiovi, Jack Lind, Larry Duffy, Rob DeCarolis, Ralph Somma, Alan Manzo and many more. Steve added that for the past four years, Sakoutis Brothers Disposal has donated a flatbed truck to use as the main stage. “It’s a no-brainer having Rockfest in Colts Neck. It’s a beautiful park with grills and a perfect space for the bands to play. And once again, the Colts Neck Business Association is supporting the event. We also sell Rockfest t-shirts and sweatshirts, which you will soon be able to view and buy on our website at www.sheepherders.com/cnrf,” said Warendorf.

If they do... They might have sleep apnea, a condition which affects breathing while they sleep. This may be why they are tired most of the day or may doze off while at work or driving. Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. In most cases, your medical insurance will pay for the appliance. For those currently under CPAP therapy, these oral appliances can be just as effective in controlling your apnea. They are much more comfortable, and can be used in combination with your CPAP.

STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Holmdel Local Adds CEO to Resumé… at Seventeen!
ELINA IS A REMARKABLE YOUNG BUSINESS WOMAN. She was also a busy, well-rounded high school student. Her school activities included being a member of the high school band, the Key Club, being on the tennis team, and several other honor societies. Other accomplishments include being first flute in the school band for a few years and holding the position of Lieutenant Governor of her division in the Key Club, which is a very special honor. Elina’s company, Beauteque, is an ecommerce site that brings popular and reliable Asian beauty products to the Western world. The online retail store offers a wide variety of natural cosmetics, skin care and much more. The website for Elina’s one-stop shop haven can be visited at www.beauteque.com. The business is based in Hazlet. This young female entrepreneur currently has a staff of about 15 people, some of them college students. She already has a plan in place to balance college with the demands of her business. “I have already scheduled classes at Babson for only Monday through Wednesday so I can come back to New Jersey to work Thursday and Friday. The rest of the week, I will be communicating through email, phone calls, and video conferences with my staff. I believe the key to everything is time management.” Staying grounded and focused are also necessary and Elina shared who has helped her with these challenges. “My mother, an entrepreneur herself, is definitely the person who has kept me grounded and focused. With running a business, there are always difficulties, but whenever I face an obstacle, she is always the first person I will go to for advice.” << Elina Hsueh, 17, started her own company, Beauteque, one year ago while still attending Holmdel High School.
<<
Elina Hsueh, a determined and successful entrepreneur at the age of 17, will be embarking on a “first” for her business. “My favorite thing to do is to travel around the world. This is another reason I love my job because it gives me the excuse to visit different places. This September, I will be going to Korea for my first business trip.” Seventeen-year-old Elina Hsueh graduated from Holmdel High School just two months ago and will be attending Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts in the fall. Her major will be “Bachelor of Science in Business Management,” and she will concentrate on Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Although this may sound like the path of many other graduates throughout the area, there is one huge difference. One year ago, while she was still in high school, Elina started and has successfully maintained her own business! Starting up a business at the age of 16 is a daring undertaking, yet Elina feels it simply fulfilled a dream she always knew would become a reality. “Since I was a young girl, I have always known I wanted to be a business woman. With that goal in mind, I knew I had to work hard and learn a lot in order to become the person I wanted to be,” she explained. Having a huge passion for business has been with her since she was very young, mainly because of her mother’s influence. “Before Beauteque, my mother had her own garment manufacturing company. I wanted to start this particular business because I wanted to further introduce these products to more people. These beauty products were the only ones that could heal my acne quickly and reduce the wrinkle lines on my mother’s face; so with these benefits, I knew they could do very well in the Western market.”

6TH ANNUAL WALK THE WALK WITH KEVIN KRET The 6th annual Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Christian Brothers Academy, located at 850 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Event organizers noted that this event is rain or shine – in the event of rain – the Walk will take place in the CBA gymnasium, as it did for the 2014 Walk.
Come out and support the Kret Family, along with many of Kevin’s friends!
Kevin Kret of Middletown, who was a 2008 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and had a year under his belt at Villanova University, was home for the summer when he had a riding accident. While on his skateboard, Kret hit a pile of debris left from a recent storm and fell, he hit his head and suffered a traumatic brain injury which left him in an unconscious state. Kevin was not wearing a helmet.
Circle BMW Raises $750 for Zilinski Memorial Fund Memorial Day Event Helps Wounded Warriors The founders of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund were all smiles at Circle BMW in Eatontown as owner Thomas DeFelice, Jr., presented the organization with a check for $750 resulting from the dealership’s Memorial Day fundraiser. The fund was created and founded in 2006 in order to honor local resident 1st Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II, United States Army, who was killed in action while deployed in Iraq on November 19, 2005. Zilinski was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, which is also DeFelice’s alma mater. “I graduated from CBA in 1970,” said DeFelice. “That’s where I heard about the Zilinski Fund and all the wonderful things it does for our wounded warriors.”
Left to right: Circle BMW President Thomas DeFelice, Jr., Marion & Dennis Zilinski and Board Member Annie Stattel, The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund.
He noted that Circle BMW honors a different veteran’s charity each year during Memorial Day, but his shared connection with the late Lt. Zilinski made this year’s effort very special.
“We were very honored to be the chosen recipients of this year’s Memorial Day fundraiser,” said the fund’s Co-Founder Marion Zilinski, mother of Lt. Zilinski. “We also salute Circle BMW as being one of the few dealerships to close on Memorial Day…they put honoring our military ahead of profits, and that’s a rare thing these days." “We wish more dealerships would follow their example and focus on the men and women who serve our country.” The Fund is all volunteer, so 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward helping veterans. Begins Open Registration on August 15th The Colts Neck Parent Teacher Organization would like to invite all parents of students enrolled in the Colts
Neck PreK-8 School District to join the PTO and be a part of our caring school community. The PTO will launch its annual Open Registration period on August 15, which will continue through September. To register, visit the PTO website at www.coltsneckpto. org. Membership in the PTO provides parents many opportunities to share in their children’s school day. Members may volunteer for any number of in-school activities - from working in the library, assisting in the computer and science labs, to participating in the classroom. The PTO keeps its members informed of volunteer opportunities, school issues and activities on a regular basis via meetings, newsletters, e-mails and website. The PTO partners with the schools to extend and enrich learning opportunities for children through school-wide, grade-wide and classroom events, trips, assemblies and parties. Members are instrumental in planning and implementing many of these programs for students. PTO volunteers also raise funds to support student programs through various events such as the 5K and Spring Gala. This past year, the PTO funded over $124,000 in programs, which included $58,000 for the district's one to one technology initiative. The success of the PTO depends on the dedicated volunteerism and support of parents and caregivers like you. Become a part of this close-knit community and make a difference in your children’s education. To register, visit www.coltsneckpto.org. Local businesses can show their support for the PTO and school community through various advertising and sponsorship opportunities throughout the year. CHARLES LAFITTE FOUNDATION RAISES $1 MILLION FOR COUNT BASIE THEATRE ENDOWMENT 12th Annual Charity Golf Classic Raises Record Proceeds
AT ITS 12TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC on June 29, 2015 at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ, the Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) raised a record $1 million for Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, this year’s beneficiary. Count Basie Theatre is a world-class arts and entertainment venue in Red Bank, that fosters understanding and appreciation for the power of the performing arts and creates opportunity for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels. The funds raised at this year’s Charity Golf Classic will create an endowment for arts and educational outreach programs at Count Basie Theatre, making the arts available to students of all backgrounds. "We are incredibly grateful to the Charles Lafitte Foundation and all of the other supporters of the Golf Classic,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees. “The money raised will have a tremendously positive impact on our education programs, which are the soul of the Count Basie Theatre." Suzanne and Jeffrey Citron, CLF’s co-founders, matched each Golf Classic donation, dollar for dollar. Over the past 12 years, CLF’s Charity Golf Classic has raised nearly $6.5 million to improve the lives of countless individuals. “Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we are proud to support Count Basie Theatre with the largest amount raised at this event in our foundation’s history,” said Jeffrey Citron, cofounder of CLF. “These funds will help provide access to the arts for students of all socioeconomic levels for many years to come. We are extremely grateful to our Golf Classic partners, many who have supported this event for more than a decade, for their

CLF unveiled and presented a $1 million donation to Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank. Suzanne and Jeffrey Citron, CLF co-founders, matched each donation from the event contributions in making this the most successful year.” The Count Basie Theatre’s educational mission is to provide a foundation of cultural enrichment to students of all ages and economic levels. These efforts include arts instruction and coursework, plus unique programs like teacher’s professional development and bus-in programs for students in underprivileged school districts. “Whether onsite at the historic Basie’s Performing Arts Academy, or offsite in the schools, the Citrons and supporters of the Charles Lafitte Foundation helped us raise one million dollars to advance the Count Basie Theatre’s mission,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Theatre. “The endowment created from this year’s Golf Classic will provide thousands of arts education and outreach opportunities for generations to come.” Each year, CLF selects a different nonprofit organization as the beneficiary of its signature event. Since the first event in 2003, CLF has devoted the Golf Classic’s proceeds to a single organization that works to improve and enhance communities.

This special event is hosted yearly by The Frances Foundation
for Kids Fighting Cancer. The Foundation’s namesake Frances Jean
Nolan Heugle was taken by cancer in March 2000. Her special love for children prompted 50 good-hearted and generous members of
the Foundation’s Board of Trustees to unite and commit to bringing smiles to kids fighting cancer.
This all day event began around 7:30 a.m. and ended with a
championship trophy presentation at about 8:00 p.m. “This entire day was dedicated to bringing fun, joy, smiles, laughter, comfort and a great time to the pediatric cancer warriors, their families, and the
families of our Frances Foundation angels,” said Heugle. A massive
spread that included bagels, fresh fruit, donuts, munchkins, juices,
coffee, soft drinks, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, salads, popcorn, snow cones, cake, popsicles, cupcakes, watermelon, as well as a
barbecue, was enjoyed by everyone. In the park and pavilion was a
DJ who kept the music rocking and face painting for the kids. Other
kid-friendly fun games included a water balloon toss, limbo, wiffleball, soccer shout-out, and arts and crafts.
All team names were listed on the back of purple t-shirts, which
represented the 13 teams that played in the tournament, each in honor
of the pediatric cancer warriors. Heugle explained that one team was

angels was held mid-day and included a beautiful balloon release ceremony. NOTE: Just shortly before this event, Antonio, one of the
Frances Foundation’s teenage cancer warriors passed away. Our condolences go out to the family.
In organizing this event, Heugle noted that there has never been
as many volunteers arrive to help out. “We are so grateful to ALL of you. Extra special thanks goes out to Softball Tournament Director of
Operations Trustee Chris Heugle and Grand Slam Sponsors Trustees Bob and Kathy Gluck. And special thanks to Frances Foundation
Super Supporters Steve and Doris Monteforte and the Monteforte Family for their extremely generous donations of 500 hamburgers,
500 hot dogs, 600 pieces of cheese, buckets and buckets and buckets of macaroni salad, potato salad, and cole slaw; AND 10 watermelons.”
The Frances Foundation is 100% volunteer and every dollar goes
to the kids and their families. With the amount of people who attended this event, the Foundation raised approximately $13,000 for kids with cancer and their families, noted Heugle.
Next up for The Frances Foundation for Kids Fighting Cancer
is their eleventh annual Gala being held on October 17, 2015 at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. Anyone interested in this event

ON JUNE 30, 2015 at Dearborn Market in Holmdel, Stacey Pacheco of Middletown was awarded a trip to Europe. Stacey, who is Director of Operations and Finance at the March of Dimes, was selected from thousands who entered the “Ticket to Beechwood Flavor Sweepstakes" held in May by Boar’s Head Brand®. Boar’s Head Brand®, which was founded in 1905, is a well-known name and its products are available at select supermarkets, gourmet stores and fine delicatessens throughout the nation. Although it needs no introduction to its products, the company offered an interesting and exciting “trip” for its loyal customers. Throughout the month of May, fans of the company could take part in a digital journey to discover the inspiration behind Boar’s Head® Black Forest Beechwood Smoked Ham. Through the “Ticket to Beechwood Flavor Sweepstakes,” those who participated registered for a boarding pass, made three stops on
their virtual tour of Germany, and at their final fourth stop, and shared what deli or store they bought Boar’s Head® products from. Following this, they were entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Germany. Stacey shared a comment about winning the Sweepstakes. “It’s been a dream of mine to take a trip to Europe and I am incredibly grateful to have been given the chance to do so thanks to Boars Head®. I never would have thought that food shopping for my family at Dearborn Market would turn into a free trip to Germany. I will now be ever more mindful and appreciative during my frequent shopping trips to Dearborn as I peruse the Boars Head® deli counter and the wide array of healthful items throughout the store.”

IN A SLOW economy, one of the first things people cut back on is dining and entertainment. Restaurateurs know that half-empty dining rooms can mean lost revenue for their eateries. So how do restaurants keep bars buzzing and dining rooms full? Savvy restaurant owners look to local barter exchanges, like BarterPays! in Howell, as a way to attract new customers, turning empty seats into profits without discounting prices. Restaurant owners can earn full menu pricing through network bartering without accepting coupons or half-price deals. One BarterPays! member, a Japanese restaurant in Hudson County, hosted a communion party for a member magazine publisher on a recent Saturday morning. The restaurant, which doesn’t usually bring in a large brunch crowd, was happy to host a sizeable party at this time. The party introduced the restaurant to many potential new customers, kept the staff busy, and earned the restaurant owner barter dollars. Restaurants can use their newfound earnings to reduce their cash expenses, turning to barter members for advertising, marketing, accounting, pest control and carpet cleaning. If you don’t own a restaurant, but like dining out, belonging to a barter exchange is still a win. Small business owners that are members of networks like BarterPays! can enjoy a night out without breaking the bank. Everyone from dentists to salon owners like being able to treat their families to sushi, steak, martinis and sandwiches, all on barter. If you’re a restaurant owner hungry for more customers, network bartering can be extremely beneficial. It allows business owners to reach new customers, reduce cash spending, and stay busy even in a slow economy. For more information about BarterPays! or to apply for membership, please call 732.364.4614 or visit www.barterpays.com.

NYC’S ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL HOLDS SPECIAL CEREMONY Every two years, St. Patrick’s Cathedral holds confirmation for children with disabilities and special needs. One fortunate teen from Colts Neck received the sacrament on Mother’s Day, with thirty-two friends and family in attendance. Ethan Lenza and forty-six other teens from the metropolitan area were greeted by Cardinal Dolan for the special event. Anyone who knows Ethan will not be surprised to learn that Cardinal Dolan picked him out of the crowd, remarking, “So you’re the guy who sent me that great letter? Keep writing to me!” Ethan was thrilled that his heartfelt letter, written entirely by him without assistance, had been remembered. In it, Ethan had expressed his excitement to officially enter the spiritual life and
recognized that his world views have evolved. As to God, Ethan wrote, “Most importantly, He has helped me understand what makes me special…” Ethan also has the love and support of many friends and relatives who joined for a brunch afterwards and is especially close to his mother and father, Liz and Andrew, and siblings, Cassie and Luke. In fact, Ethan honored his father by taking “Andrew” as his confirmation name.

OAK HILL ACADEMY CLASS OF 2015 GRADUATES ONTO MANY TOP SCHOOLS On June 12, 2015 - the Class of 2015 graduated from Oak Hill Academy at the annual graduation ceremony held in the Scire Student Activities Center. Their guest speaker, Brother Frank Byrne, is the President of Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft. He spoke about all of the fine preparation the Oak Hill students have and the positive journeys they have in front of them. This was certainly true based on the number of acceptances and choices the Class of 2015 had after a very productive and fulfilling school year. The OHA Class of 2015 had many things to be proud of during this past year. The math team won their 6th consecutive title at the Brother Christian Jones CBA Math Contest in October including a record six students in the top 10! They helped the school achieve its highest finish ever in the nationally recognized Math Counts competition finishing 1st in Private/Parochial schools and 2nd overall at their regional competition at Union County College. The Boys Soccer Team finished 1st place in their division of the Jim Carrigan-Ferris Antoon Monmouth County Intermediate School Soccer League. Oak Hill teams placed 1st and 2nd at the Marine Academy of Science and
Technology (M.A.S.T.) jeopardy style academic competition in March. Hannah Gazdus received a Perfect paper in the National Latin Exam Level 1 test. These are just a few of the highlights that the Class of 2015 brought to the table this year. It was due to their strength that they had so many options to continue their academic careers. With a graduating class of 40, Oak Hill Academy graduates will be going to 16 different high schools! This class was accepted to many different high schools; so there were some choices to be made. Oak Hill had 9 acceptances into the very prestigious County Vocational Programs such as BioTech; High Tech, Allied Health, Communications and M.A.S.T., 2 into Red Bank Regional's Specialized Arts Program, and another 4 into the Freehold Regional Specialized Programs. The school’s largest acceptances were to the parochial schools in the area and that totaled 38! Finally, in addition to their public school districts, students earned the right to attend the following private schools: Peddie; Hun; Blair, Kent, and Ranney School. Congratulations to all these fine graduates!
RED BANK CATHOLIC ESTABLISHES ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME To celebrate those who have distinguished themselves and brought honor to Red Bank Catholic through their athletic accomplishments, RBC is establishing an Athletic Hall of Fame. The Athletic Hall of Fame will recognize those Caseys who excelled in their sport, who were critical in important athletic milestones and/or made exemplary, long-term contributions to the legacy of Red Bank Catholic High School. As RBC Athletic Director Joe Montano notes, “We know the rich history that has helped develop the Casey brand and has furthered our reach and reputation. We are grateful for those people and those moments that showed the world what it means to be a Casey.” The 2014/15 athletic teams have continued to add to the Casey athletic tradition, celebrating several State, Conference and Division Championships. Mr. Montano shares his thoughts saying, “We are always proud of our Casey athletes, and are continually inspired by their dedication, hard work, sportsmanship and importantly, their Casey spirit. We are looking forward to an exciting year as we make plans to honor
and celebrate our inaugural class of inductees into the Red Bank Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame.” Induction into the Red Bank Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame is an extraordinary honor and will be reserved to commemorate the very best in the school’s long and storied history. The Hall of Fame Selection Committee, comprised of members who represent every Red Bank Catholic era, is asking for help in identifying those Caseys who are deserving of the distinction. The committee is requesting nominations of extraordinary RBC competitors, beloved coaches and legendary teams. The deadline to submit nominations is September 30, 2015. The committee will review and give serious consideration to all nominations and will announce the first class of inductees in the fall with the induction ceremony taking place at an event in the spring. For more information about the RBC Athletic Hall of Fame, and how to submit nominations, visit the school website at www. redbankcatholic.org.

LINCROFT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - A Welcoming, Affirming, No Barrier Community Welcomes New Pastor Diane Ford
Lincroft Presbyterian Church (LPC), a member of Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), welcomes Reverend Diane R. Ford as its new pastor. LPC congregants formally adopted the PCUSA’s vote to welcome and ordain all gender orientations and expressions. More recently the PCUSA authorized their clergy to marry same-gendered couples, and the kiosk on LPC’s front lawn reads, “We Celebrate All Marriages.” Additionally, the congregation works to make their church welcoming and accessible to those of all ages who have physical challenges. This June they installed a new amplification system for the hearing-impaired to complement the large type bibles and handicapped accessible facilities. The hearing loop system works with digital hearing aids, as well as with available headsets to ensure clear communication throughout the sanctuary. “I am thrilled to have been called to serve in a church that focuses their ministries outside the church walls,” says Pastor Ford. “This is more in line with the ministry of Jesus, and allows the relevance of Christianity to be seen in the surrounding community. As a congregation we have the opportunity to be a place for people from all walks of life to congregate, celebrate and work together to build an even better community on the Jersey Shore.” Reverend Diane Ford comes to Lincroft from Sacramento, California. She ministered at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sacramento for the past six years. Diane began as their

The vibrant community at LPC began as Red Bank Baptist Church in 1846 in what was called "Leedsville," now Lincroft. As Monmouth County evolved, the church has grown and relocated to various locations, finding its current home on the corner of West Front Street and Everett Road. Today, visitors will find a recently expanded entrance to the church, and a worship space that is decorated to reflect the theme of the worship service. Talented musicians, relevant preaching and a relaxed atmosphere help shape the experience on Sundays. LPC’s congregants are as varied as the mosaic of the USA with long-standing residents of Monmouth County, as well as newcomers to the Jersey Shore. Interests and occupations are as varied as our geographic origins with programs geared to our children and youth, a women’s retreat, a book club, a fiber of faith knit & crochet group, as well as bible study groups. KEEP LEG HOLD TRAPS BANNED IN NJ PROVIDED BY KATHLEEN SCHATZMANN
NJ STATE DIRECTOR | THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
Leg hold traps have been banned in New Jersey since 1985 because the legislature found them inhumane, but now the New Jersey Divi-
sion of Fish and Wildlife’s Game Council wants to reinstate them for the first time in 30 years.
The consequences could be catastrophic. Opening up the ban on these inhumane traps will bring massive suffering to wildlife and unin-
tended targets like family cats who can become unintended victims.
No matter what trapping proponents say, these modified devices are still cruel and dangerous leg hold traps. Trappers and their allies
want you to think that these traps are humane but nothing could be further from the truth. As with all leg hold traps, they are powered by incredibly strong springs that slam shut on an animal and exert excruciating force until the trapper shows up to kill the animal, often resorting to drowning, chest compression and strangulation— to avoid damaging the pelt. Animals endure distress, extreme pain and suffering and exposure to the elements for hours or even days.
While the modified leg hold traps are intended to be more selective and catch only raccoons and opossums, non-target captures of fam-
ily cats, dogs, minks, otters and other animals will occur. When these devices are used by both recreational trappers and “nuisance” urban wildlife control operators, the risk of exposing pets to modified traps only increase.
New Jersey has about 1,200 trappers who generate $576,000 per year in fur sales and deplete the state’s wildlife for their private gain. In
comparison, there are 1.9 million wildlife watchers in New Jersey, who spend nearly one billion dollars annually on their recreation. Whose interests are being violated by this attempt to lift the ban?
Leg hold traps were cruel in 1985, and they are cruel now. Please urge your Senator and two Assembly Members to keep New Jersey’s
ban in place by opposing the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife Game Council’s proposed use of such traps. You can find your legislator’s contact information here: www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp

Jersey Shore Workcamp held its seventh workcamp June 28 to July 4, 2015 during
which time over 400 Christian youth from all over the United States and Canada came together to work on 75 homes in the Bayshore area. The youth and leaders were housed in Keansburg High School for their weeks’ stay. This service work is done free of cost for the homeowners; and the only qualifications are that the person cannot do the needed work or afford the materials. Coordinators Bill and Gail Bechtoldt noted that Jersey Shore Workcamp (JSW) is co-sponsored by their church, St. John’s United Methodist Church in Hazlet. They explained that each workcamper pays for their mission opportunity; and that locally, funds are raised to supply the paint and materials needed to work on the homes. Building wheelchair ramps, scraping, painting, new steps or porch replacement are some of the work done. In the end, these workcampers and their leaders have helped those in need to live safely with dignity and respect. Homes in Aberdeen, Hazlet, Keansburg, Keyport, Middletown, and Union Beach received muchneeded attention. “Our church had 10 workcampers. Overall we had 70 crews and each crew consisted of five youth and one adult,” explained Gail. Over 60 volunteers assisted with this workcamp. Locally, the volunteers were St. John’s members, extended family and friends. Holmdel Kiwanis and Keyport Kiwanis, as well as the Middletown Lions were also supportive. On June 28, when the youth began to arrive at Keansburg High School, members of the Holmdel and Keyport Kiwanis welcomed them with a barbecue and slices of watermelon. “We are fortunate to have the support of generous businesses who supplied fruit snacks, cookies, and treats every afternoon when the youth returned to the school, as well as in the evening after the evening program,” said Gail. She added that this was the JSW’s sixth workcamp at Keansburg High School. She sent thanks to Keansburg Superintendent of Schools Gerald North. “The school was immaculate and the custodial and kitchen staff were fantastic!” Some of the local leaders who have stopped by to offer thanks and positive energy to the youth and volunteers were the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism Executive Director Rowena Madden; Keansburg Mayor George Hoff; Hazlet Deputy Mayor Scott Aagre; Union Beach Mayor Paul Smith; and Pastor of St. John’s United Methodist Church Reverend Clark Callender. Whether this is the first or last workcamp the youth attend, the same thing is true for everyone – they go home different than when they arrived. As first time attendee Ashleigh Kried, 15, of Indianapolis explained, “It was fun to see new faces and learn other people’s stories. It has opened me up in ways I didn’t know could happen. This is the best thing I have ever experienced.” Four-time attendee Marilla Marks, 17, of Michigan said, “You know it’s the same schedule each time but every workcamp brings something different and unique. We all had a blast helping the people whose homes we worked at.”

Workcamp Leader Dana Wood of Connecticut has attended four workcamps. “Some of the youth don’t realize what is needed to maintain a house, or about the struggles people in need have to face. Before long they each develop skills and their accomplishments build self-esteem. They get to know the residents and get attached to them. It’s absolutely beautiful to watch. These youth represent our churches and our communities, and they do a wonderful job. Many of them continue helping others throughout college and they know that this experience has helped in making them who they are.” Hazlet resident Stephanie Daniels shared, “Bill and Gail Bechtoldt and the Jersey Shore Workcamp are wonderful! A true God-send. My two crews of teens and adults were the sweetest, best bunch I’ve ever met. We couldn’t have done it without them.” Owen Driskoll of Connecticut was a first time workcamper at the Daniels’ home. “This is the greatest summer I have ever had because of this work camp. This experience is memorable. Our resident has seen hard times which I can relate to. My crew members are from all over the United States and we have built strong bonds and are developing lasting friendships.” Keyport resident Linda Melendez shared, “This week has been extremely uplifting for me. Not only does this work camp paint and repair my home but they also repair me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The Jersey Shore Workcamp restored my faith in

humanity and shows there are wonderful people out there who are willing to help strangers. I appreciate all the hard work, dedication and determination the Jersey Shore Workcamp volunteers and my crew put in to help me.” Returning workcamper Doris McDermott of Connecticut who worked at this Keyport home said, “I love it! Workcamp regenerates my spiritual energy. This is my third time at Jersey Shore Workcamp and my twentieth year workcamping.” First time workcamper Maggie Thomson of Massachusetts who also worked at this site said, “My resident is a great inspiration!” One teary-eyed Union Beach gentleman said this about the youth working on his home. “My heart will be changed by the teens working here this week.” Gail shared the following statement that summarizes what she and her husband Bill would like the public to know about the impact the youth, leaders, and residents have on one another. “We care if the painting is applied and the wheelchair ramp is built, but the most important thing is that the resident knows the youth cares about them and wants to keep them safe. We hope the youth understand they may be the only face of Jesus the resident may see and their arms the only ones who hug them. They are our ambassadors for Christ. Bill and I are so blessed to have the opportunity to partner our church with Group Workcamps to bring the home repair project to the Bayshore area.” Interest in the Jersey Shore Workcamp Project can be directed to Bill Bechtoldt at dokbill44@ verizon.net or Gail at mrsb105@verizon.net.

The Fred Baxter Golf Classic A DAY TO GIVE BACK AT BELLA VISTA COUNTRY CLUB STORY RYAN LOUGHLIN
Fred Baxter refers to his childhood growing up in Brundidge, Alabama as “humble beginnings.” A fitting start for a man who has achieved goals on the football field that most people only dream of, yet as a person, has somehow remained noticeably grounded, down to earth, and yes - humble. The fame, fortune and glory that comes tacked on to a career in the National Football League has been known to bring forth a variety of behaviors off the field- some beautifully inspiring, and others heartbreakingly disgraceful. Much of the focus from the media tends to be on the fallen stars- the crashing and burning of former idols such as Michael Vick, Aaron Hernandez or Plaxico Burress- men whose own self perceived invincibility ultimately led to their downfall. There are the stories of those who blew all their earnings on drugs and fancy cars, tales even involving some of the sport’s true greats - Lawrence Taylor casually selling his super bowl ring for some quick cash comes to mind. While the negative stories may at times dominate the headlines, quietly, many former NFL stars are not shooting themselves in the foot (figuratively or literally), nor have they spent a life fueled by drug use or excess in general. Instead, some choose to use their former glory to give back, and to shift the focus on positively inspiring the youth of today. That is what The Fred Baxter Foundation is all about. After 11 seasons in the NFL (including a successful trip to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots) Fred Baxter began mentoring at his local church. This desire to help those who may have needed guidance was the initial seed that was to eventually grow into the Fred Baxter Foundation. Baxter describes his own youth as being ripe with mentors, adults who steered him on the right path. “I’m just trying to make a difference,” says Baxter, “I want to give [to kids] the same opportunities that someone gave me.” And Baxter is doing just that - working with kids as young as 8 years old - guiding them and using sports as a metaphor for success in life. That said, trying to get a third grader to appreciate the fundamentals of a game like golf can be a bit challenging, “You gotta trick em’. It’s very difficult, but I use it as a change-up, to get them outside of the box. Once they see the challenge of trying to hit that golf ball- I got them.” With the game of golf key to his mentoring, it seemed a natural
fit for the Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro to host The Fred Baxter Celebrity Golf Classic on July 20, 2015. A variety of former NFL greats were on hand to play a few rounds while lending their support to the charity - names like Wayne Chrebet, Mike Rozier, and Mike Quick, just to name a few. After the scorching heat of the day finally cooled down a bit, participants headed inside for a cocktail hour and reception which included a silent auction of some incredible sports memorabilia (think jerseys, boxing gloves and footballs signed by everyone from Jerry Cooney to Doc Gooden). All proceeds from the event, including the silent auction went to the Fred Baxter Foundation. Anthony Beshara of Bella Vista Country Club served as the unofficial host for the evening, making various announcements throughout the night and ensuring the whole event ran smoothly. Sponsors included Siemens, Trinity Financial and Jersey 101.5, among others.
