CONNOR JAEGER is Off to RIO! Fair Haven Native Places First at US Olympic Trials, Heads Back to Olympics CONNOR JAEGER, formerly of Fair Haven, secured a spot on the 2016 U.S. Men’s Olympic Swim Team when he placed first in the 400-meter Freestyle on June 26 at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. During the last of the Trials on July 3, 2016 - Jaeger and Jordan Wilimovsky soon became the ones to follow, making the 1,500-meter freestyle race seem like a two-man race. Their amazing speed and ability to focus kept the race intense and they remained close to the end. Jaeger once again won the gold by finishing in 14:47.61 minutes; Wilimovsky in 14:49.19 minutes. When asked what he was thinking during that race and if he was aware of how close Wilimovsky was, Jaeger replied, “That was a tough race with Jordan. Absolutely, I saw him there the whole time. I was just trying to stay ahead of him for as long as I could and just push the legs hard coming home.”
Jaeger shared his reaction to winning gold medals in both the 400-meter
freestyle and the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. “I was so shocked that I had won the 400. I could tell that I was well behind for a majority of the race. At the 200-meter wall, I started to think to myself, ‘you’re going to get
NOTE: A public viewing of Connor Jaeger’s 1,500-meter freestyle swim event will be held in the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School auditorium on August 13, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and there is no need to pre-register. The RFH Swim Team will be selling “Team Jaeger” t-shirts for $10 each in the lobby on that evening.

Jaeger finished sixth in the
1,500-meter freestyle event at the 2012 London Olympics. At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, Jaeger finished second in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 14:52.51. There was
just 0.32 one-hundredths of a second between him and Andrew Gemmell. It was considered one of the closest 1,500-meter finishes in Trials history. That swim was also the fifth fastest time in the world during 2012 heading into the Olympics, as well as being only the fifth time Jaeger ever swam the 1,500-meter freestyle in competition. “That race was so exciting for us because for the first half of the race Andrew and I were actually in second and third and we were battling for that second place spot. There was another swimmer who took the race out hard and I think neither of us thought we were capable of beating him. With about 500 to go, Andrew and I took over the lead and then the race became for that winning spot. It was mind blowing! I never thought I would go to the Olympics. To be completely honest, having the fifth fastest time in the world at that time made me feel a little overwhelmed, but also excited”, Connor shared.
Some of the highlights of Jaeger’s career include 2012 U.S.
Olympian (sixth-1,500m freestyle); 2013 World Championship bronze medalist (400m freestyle); 2014 Pan Pacific Gold Medalist; 2015 World Championships Silver Medalist (1,500m freestyle); American Record Holder (1,500m freestyle and 1,650 freestyle); three-time NCAA Champion; ten-time NCAA All-American; and Detroit Athletic Club “Michigan Male Athlete of the Year” 2012/2013 and 2013/2014. With this amazing record of wins between 2012 and 2016, Jaeger was asked if there was any one win that he personally felt was the best. He answered, “That 500-yard freestyle in 2013 at NCAA. That was my first major win and I did it with my whole team and alumni in the stands. I will never forget that!”
Jaeger is 25 years old and lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His
parents still live in Fair Haven. “I love coming back to visit them,” he shared. He also has a sister Dana. “I’m lucky to have her as an older sister,” said Jaeger. When they were growing up in Fair Haven, their parents Eric and Bernadette sent them to Central Jersey Aquatic Club (CJAC) where they practiced regularly at Monmouth University’s pool. Jaeger became serious about swimming when he was eight, and excelled at it. Before he was 13, Jaeger made the NJ All-Star squad and the Junior Olympics. “My memory of this is a bit shady, but I qualified for a “zones” meet for the first time when I was 11 years old. I went to the meet and added about 10 seconds in my 200 IM and cried. Guess I couldn’t handle the pressure,” he laughed.
While at CJAC, he practiced six times a week for two hours
each. CJAC Head Coach Corrina Weinkofsky and Assistant Coach Cathy Corcione worked with Jaeger during his time there. “Corrina was my main coach up until I left for college,” he noted. Today,
week. Heavy days can be up to 16km between two separate twohour practices.
Prior to swimming, Jaeger played baseball and soccer, and
lacrosse for a short time. Outside of the pool, he enjoys surfing and lifeguarding. As a teenager, he was a lifeguard for five summers, mostly with the Long Branch Beach Patrol. Jaeger also continued working with the coaches at CJAC during his teen years and in high school was named All-State in the 200-yard freestyle, as well as setting five conference swimming records. “I’m fortunate I was able to have this success while in high school because it really helped me in the recruiting process while trying to find the right college to attend,” he explained.
As a young student, Jaeger attended Middletown Village
School and Knollwood School in Fair Haven. He recalled when Olympian Tom Wilkens visited his school. (Wilkens grew up in Middletown.) “He came and spoke to us after receiving his bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics. I definitely remember thinking how cool it was, and how cool I thought swimming was. But it’s not as if at that moment I knew I wanted to become an Olympian. It probably wasn’t until June of 2012 that I even thought of it being in my stars at all, and even then I thought it was a really long shot. I was never in swimming because I wanted to be an Olympian. I just liked swimming and I loved swimming for my team which was the University of Michigan.”
Jaeger graduated in 2010 from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional
High School and went on to the University of Michigan where he majored in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2014; as well as graduating in 2016 with a Masters of Management. While at college, he became a member of the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving team and worked with Head Coach Mike Bottom. Jaeger was quoted as saying, “Trusting your coaches and teammates and being open to new experiences are two huge keys to hitting your full potential.”
What does the future hold for Connor Jaeger? He explained,
“Since graduating with my undergraduate degree, I have remained living and training in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It gave me an opportunity to get my Masters in Management at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. I want to go into real estate development in the New York City area and plan to move back to the East coast in the future.”
When asked if he would like to share anything else with our
readers, Jaeger promptly answered, “I am really proud to be from New Jersey, and you should be too!”
The 2016 U. S. Summer Olympics will be held August 5 through August 21, 2016 at Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Congratulations Connor! We wish you the best in Rio!

Highlights Research, Offers Solutions and Calls for Action It was standing room only at the Rally for the Navesink meeting as citizens packed Bingham Hall in Rumson on June 28. 2016, to discuss the downgraded state of the Navesink River. Zach Lees, Coastal Policy Attorney for Clean Ocean Action (COA) presented nearly a year of research in a report entitled, “Pathogen Pollution in the Navesink River: Addressing Fecal Contamination in the Navesink River Watershed”. COA has been investigating issues, researching the problems, compiling data, interviewing officials, identifying solutions, and organizing community leaders. “There have been nearly 40 years of efforts to address fecal contamination in the Navesink, including victories and setbacks. Unfortunately, the last decade has seen a trend in deteriorating water quality in the Navesink due to high levels of fecal contamination indicating bacteria,” Lees stated of the issue. “We believe that this report will help everyone from citizens to elected officials understand the problem, learn from the past and move forward with an idea of what an effective response to the water quality problem should be. We are incredibly grateful that brilliant representatives from environmental and academic organizations, elected and appointed officials, the NJDEP, and more have taken time out of their night to support the Navesink by attending this public meeting, presenting on this topic and answering questions. This is truly the first step toward improving the water quality in the Navesink.” Additionally, COA’s meeting included the NJDEP’s Source Tracking Plan for the Navesink and the Environmental Canine Service’s utilization of scent-trained canines to detect and track human waste in lakes, rivers, stormwater systems, streams and oceans. “We are so pleased to support the efforts to make the Navesink River a healthier place for the fishing, boating, swimming and other activities that are so important to all of us,” said Karen Reynolds, President and Owner of Environmental Canine Services, LLC. “Our human waste water tracking canines are an additional tool to help locate sources of human pathogen pollution entering the river so it can be removed.” This call to action is an opportunity for the citizens and communities of the Navesink River to establish new a paradigm of local action to improve water quality and re-open the beds for clamming, and to make waters safe for families and fish-rain or shine.
“Unfortunately, decades of regulatory approaches have not worked. Now is the time for us to Rally for the Navesink. Together we can find the pollution and fix it, a no blamegame strategy that brings new and innovative techniques and solutions. Most essential, is this new paradigm of a grassroots campaign where everyone in the watershed unites to get the job done,” said Cindy Zipf, COA Executive Director. The general theme of collaboration was expressed by Robert Schuster, Interim Bureau Chief at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring when he stated, “We [collectively] want to battle the issue, not each other or each of our organizations. We should all work together.” To date, Rally for the Navesink includes: American Littoral Society, Bayshore Regional Watershed Council, Clean Ocean Action, Monmouth Conservation Foundation, Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, Navesink Shrewsbury River Fishing Club, NY/NJ Baykeeper, and The New Jersey Chapter of the Recreational Fishing Alliance. Animal Advocacy: Puppy Mill Progress Provided by Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Council Director | The Humane Society of the United States June was a great month for puppy mill protection. Hollywood, Florida, became the 150th locale in the country to enact a pet shop ordinance banning the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet stores, as a tool to dry up the markets for puppy mill operators. There are now over 160 cities and towns across the country with these bans, including Boston, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia. Remarkably, 60 New Jersey municipalities have enacted pet shop bans. Several states have also passed pet store regulations, including Louisiana and Maryland –both signed into law in June. So much of this critical, life-saving work is due to dedicated advocates who want to drive social reform. With such incredible public support and momentum, it is no wonder our New Jersey state legislators are moving a state-wide ban. In June, New Jersey proved to be triumphant as the Senate passed S.63, a bill which will protect New Jersey consumers by prohibiting the sale of puppies from the worst puppy mills, by a 27 – 8 vote. For those that have not heard of this term, a puppy “New Jersey’s lawmakers are mill is an inhustanding up against animal cruelty mane, commercial dog-breeding faby regulating puppy mill sales, cility in which the and we couldn’t be more proud.” health and wellbeing of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits. The state bill would require pet dealers selling to New Jersey consumers to be licensed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and free of certain Animal Welfare Act violations. The bill would also prohibit any pet dealer who violates these provisions three times from selling in the state. Additionally, S.63 addresses a number of the primary means through which puppy mills sell to unsuspecting consumers and will not harm current businesses following the law. The measure has been crafted so

S.63 was championed by Senator Raymond Lesniak and sponsored by Senators James Beach, Nicholas Scutari, Loretta Weinberg, Brian Stack, and Sandra Cunningham. The bill now awaits a hearing in the Assembly. We applaud the sponsors of A.2338, the Assembly version sponsored by Assemblyman Daniel Benson, and Assembly Members Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Tim Eustace, Reed Gusciora, Raj Mukherji, Wayne DeAngelo, Troy Singleton, and Patrick Diegnan. We urge anyone looking to add a pet to their family to consider adoption first, and if that is not an option, to seek out a responsible breeder who will gladly show a potential purchaser where and how the puppies were raised and how the mother of the puppy will continue to live after the sale. The HSUS also publishes a Puppy Buyer’s Guide for consumers. We also strongly encourage New Jersey pet stores selling puppy mill puppies to transition to the humane model, followed by the largest and most successful chains in the country, where shelter and rescue pets are offered for adoption. If our movement is to succeed, we need thousands of volunteers pressing the case for animal protection – passing local animal protection ordinances, advocating for state and federal legislation, and networking with other animal protection groups. For New Jersey, the passage in the Senate gets us one step closer to the day when cruel puppy mills have nowhere left to sell. We must now work together to urge the Assembly to do the same. New Jersey’s lawmakers are standing up against animal cruelty by regulating puppy mill sales, and we couldn’t be more proud. For more information, visit www.humanesociety.org.

FAIR HAVEN FIREMEN’S FAIR
STORY SUSAN MURPHY
Fair Haven Fire Company has the distinction of operating New Jersey’s largest Firemen’s Fair each year. It is also the second largest fair of any kind in the state. The fair is located at 645 River Road and will be held August 26 through September 3, 2016. Fridays and Saturdays the fair will be open from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Monday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.; the fair will be closed on Sunday. Approximately 15 rides will be located on the property during the fair with seven to eight of these geared toward the little ones or families. A firetruck ride will satisfy those little future firefighters as well as their parents! There will be approximately 15 game booths and a Super 50/50. And what is a fair without delicious food?! In the main dining room located within the facility and under the tent patrons can choose from a variety of seafood dishes, sausage, meatball and roast beef sandwiches, chicken nuggets, eggplant, and more. The “Out-Back” kitchen offers hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cake, ice cream, cotton candy, and other fare. The food is fresh every day and prepared each morning so it is ready to serve that night. Both of these food areas are operated and run by the members, families, friends and community who volunteer during the week of the fair. The entire Fire Company consists of approximately 220 members. First Aid Squad members are members of the Fire Company and volunteer as much as anyone else at this event. (While the fair is the Fire Company’s main fundraising event, the First Aid Squad holds a raffle each year to help support its squad). The fair is a large undertaking and approximately 150-180 volunteers are needed per night! Co-chair Jim Butler noted that he has been working on the Firemen’s Fair since he was 10 or 11-years old. “Both my grandfather and my father were and are members of this fire company so it was kind of in me to be working the fair at a young age. I started on the morning crew prepping food, cleaning the grounds running errands, etc., just like many of the kids and volunteers still do today. As I got older, and before I was a member, I started working in the skills game booths in the evenings of the fair. I have been a member of the Fire Company for 27-years, and have probably worked the fair to

some capacity for 37 years.” For about five years he has been co-chairperson of the fair and said the operations and expectations of the fair haven’t changed all that much. “We still rely on the volunteers to help out in the morning crew; some of those volunteers in the mornings work the evening shifts as well. Our membership still runs all the operations of the fair, and we can still always depend on the community for their support and help during the week of the fair.” Jim explained that the fair takes approximately 2-1/2 to 3 months for set up and take down, and it is all completed by the members. “The days and nights get to be long leading up to this event, but once the fair opens, it goes very smooth. The membership, with the help of the volunteers, really pull together to make this a great event for the community and for the fire company.” Fire Chief Michael Wiehl shared his memories of the Fair and explained the preparations necessary to always keep residents safe. “I started working the fair busing tables in the dining room at the age of 12. I moved to the stock room for a few years and am now in the Out-back cooking French fries for the entire fair. This is my 20th year as a member of the department and I have the honor of being chief.” One of his biggest responsibilities is making sure that all apparatus is available to respond the week of the fair including during the fair itself. He noted that with the influx of people to the town during the fair, staging of the trucks is a big concern. He must assign duty crews for each night of the fair so the Fire Company can continue to operate if there is a call. They also have the help of the Red Bank and Rumson Fire Departments who will help with manpower if needed at a call. “Our main concern is the safety of the residents of Fair Haven at all times.” The Chief shared some personal thoughts. “From riding my bike to the fair as a young child to now being in charge of the Fire Department is something I am very proud of and have worked many years to be able to do. It is truly a special week in Fair Haven that all the members and residents look forward to each year as an end of summer tradition. It is only with the support of our members and residents that we are able to put on such a wonderful fair.”

Inaugural Little Silver Day, A True Community Event Story Susan Murphy | Photos Kim Levin Photography
Little Silver Day had all the makings of a perfect community celebration. Held just five days into the summer season on June 25, 2016, this inaugural event offered great live music from a variety of talented musicians, fresh food worthy of a fivestar rating, several beverage options, and everyone’s favorite dessert choices – ice cream and Italian ice. Add to these the fact that there was something for every age group - such as face painting, clowns, a sports arena inflatable bouncy house, carnival games, miniature golf, a chance to get a tattoo (removable of course), stilt walker, Bubble-Zone, a magician, obstacle course activities, and corn hole. Popcorn and cotton candy was served all day, and tours of the town’s historical museum were available throughout the event. And who could forget the great opportunity to sink Little Silver Mayor Bob Neff in the Dunk Tank! Or, the magnificent fireworks display that closed out the evening?! The event was held at the Borough’s fields near Markham Public School and attended by over 2,000 Little Silver residents, their families and friends. Little Sil-

ver Day was hosted by The Little Silver Charitable Foundation (LSCF), which is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 and dedicated to helping support and improve the well-being of the Little Silver community. Chairperson of the LSCF Rick Brandt shared some background on Little Silver Day. “For six months leading up to the event, the organizing committee worked tirelessly to create this free, one-day, fun-filled event. The Little Silver Mayor, Council, Borough employees, Fire and First Aid volunteers, and Policemen were incredible to work with and made this extensive planning process very enjoyable. Little Silver Day would not have been possible without the amazingly generous businesses and families who sponsored and donated toward the event. The festivities at Little Silver Day were perfect and the event went off without a hitch.” With everyone working together as a team, it truly demonstrated why Little Silver is such an amazing place. “Reflecting on the six-month planning process, the 100plus volunteers we had at Little Silver Day helping to facilitate such an amazing event, and the dozens of volunteers who came in waves the morning after to help clean up, really proved why the huge hearts of the people in this small town make our community what it is.” The Little Silver Charitable Foundation extends their sincere thanks to all the sponsors for their generous support in helping to make the first inaugural Little Silver Day a reality! Planning for future Little Silver Charitable Foundation events is already underway. For more information on LSCF, visit www. littlesilvercharitablefoundation.com.

HI, MY NAME IS OTIS and I was rescued from the South Korean meat trade. In case you didn’t know, South Korea is the only country in the world known to solely raise dogs on intensive dog farming facilities to supply the demand for dog meat and associated products. The meat trade dogs live in small barren cages, are exposed to all of the elements and are given just enough food to survive. They are kept in crowded cages and routinely suffer from disease, injury and malnutrition. As if that weren't bad enough, they are also the subject of terrible, daily neglect and at times direct cruelty. The dog meat traders purchase dogs only from these type of farms to sell to dog meat markets or restaurants. I am so grateful that the Humane Society International shut down the farm I lived on and rescued me and all of my friends! I was given a new lease on life and a chance to learn to be a dog. The emergency Placement Partner Program was able to get me safely to the Monmouth County SPCA where I have met some wonderful people who are teaching me how to be a dog. They have taught me that human interaction can be a good thing and I am learning to trust my new human friends more and more every day.
Epping Payne | Fair Haven
My shelter buddies think I am about 2 years old and I appear to maybe some sort of a Lab type of mix. I am very shy when meeting new people but I am getting better each and every day. I have learned that humans often come with good treats and I like that! Some of my friends will even share their lunch with me! I am still learning all about being a dog, as I have no idea what these things they call “toys” are that they keep putting in front of me. I do however like walks and have been told that I walk very nicely when my friends take me out. And I just learned to sit! It took me a little while but the treats they kept giving me guided me to master the “sit”! So what’s next? Maybe a home to call my own? I hear that is can be a wonderful thing too!

Colts Neck Jeweler Selected as a Member of the Forevermark Leadership Council, Awarded Carat Club Winners J. Vincent Jewelers in Colts Neck was awarded the first Forevermark Carat Club Winners. It is a tremendous accomplishment that has not only earned them accolades from their peers and colleagues, but has also rewarded Joseph Brando with an exciting opportunity to visit the De Beers Victor Mine, Ontario’s first and only diamond mine from August 16 through August 18, 2016. Officially opened in July 2007, the Victor Mine is a fly-in/fly-out remote mine approximately 700 miles north of Toronto in the James Bay Lowlands of northern Ontario. The nearest road is approximately 250 miles away, the nearest year round railway is approximately 180 miles away and the nearest community is a remote fly-in First Nation Aboriginal Reserve approximately 60 miles away. The trip will include a visit to the HRA-Crossworks cutting and polishing facility in Sudbury, Ontario, which is approximately 430 miles south of the Victor Mine. Forevermark President Charles Stanley stated, “We are delighted to partner with Joe and his company J Vincent Jewelers. Forevermark prides itself in the selection of our diamonds and we are equally selective in choosing our partners. 7th Annual Touch-A-Truck Day. Fire Engines, Ambulances, Construction Rigs and More Hosted by Monmouth Day Care Center of Red Bank. Monmouth Day Care Center (MDCC) will host its seventh annual Touch-a-Truck “fun-raiser” September 24, 2016 from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Red Bank Middle School, located at 101 Harding Road in Red Bank. Tickets are $15 for a family of up to four if purchased in advance to include five activity tickets - $20 at the door. MDCC is partnering with Lunch Break, a Red Bank non-profit that provides food and clothing for those in need. Bringing a non-perishable food item for Lunch Break gets you an extra activity ticket. Advance tickets and additional information can be found at www.monmouthdaycarecenter1969.org, or by calling 732.741.4313. Ambulances, fire engines, military vehicles, limousines, dump trucks and other construction equipment will be displayed in the Middle School parking lot, where kids will get a closer look at the vehicles they love to see every day! Children are encouraged to explore the vehicles in a safe environment while the owners and operators are on hand to describe how the vehicles work and what kind of jobs they do.
“Every kid stops and watches when a police car or fire engine races by. This event gives them a chance to get to know these vehicles and the men and women who work with them, while contributing to a good cause,” said Heidi Zaentz, MDCC’s Executive Director. In addition to the vehicles on display, the event includes crafts, games (activity tickets required) and music. Food vendors will be available, and a 50-50 raffle will be held. All proceeds from the event will benefit Monmouth Day Care Center, a non-profit serving families seeking quality childcare without regard to race, religion, ethnicity or economic status. MDCC has been providing an excellent early childhood program to the children of the greater Red Bank community for 47 years. Monmouth Day Care Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and provides a safe, stimulating environment in which children are nurtured and challenged intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.

Liz is an incredible real estate agent. She worked tirelessly to meet my needs - juggling the many details of both the sale of my old home and the purchase of my new home. Always kind, courteous, respectful and professional, Liz patiently addressed my endless questions and concerns. Most importantly, Liz was honest in regard to all aspects of my sale and purchase. She took what could’ve been an overwhelming experience and made it a happy, seamless transaction from start to finish! -Lorraine M., Fair Haven/Red Bank Liz exhibited the highest level of professionalism and creativity to broker the deal between the buyer and us, reaching an agreement that equitably addressed the concerns of both parties. Liz’s tenacity did not end with the selling of our house. Her insight made our transition out of our home of 25 years as stress free as one could hope. We were especially pleased with Liz’s ability to adjust to the changing needs of the sellers and the buyers, her resolve to find an answer to conditions that interfere with the completion of the deal, as well as her capacity to allay our fears among circumstances that formant consternation. Heritage House should be proud to have Liz on their staff, she represents your office in an exceedingly professional and compassionate manner. Her ability to go the extra mile sets a great example. -Bill & Pat A., Rumson/Monmouth Beach Liz was simply fantastic! I loved the way she worked – very low key and low pressure, but she never missed a beat! She never stopped trying to find me good houses to consider and once “THE ONE” was found, she kept me on track with all the many details that needed to be completed. She was quietly intuitive, thoughtful and quickly sensed the type of home I was seeking then did an excellent job of identifying properties that met my criteria. I loved working with Liz and would 100% recommend her to anyone looking for a new residence. High standards integrity, hardworking, kindness – Liz Lubin had them all! -Brenda W., Long Branch
