By now, I’m sure you have heard of ‘The Iceman’ that is Wim Hof and his famed three-pillars – better known as the Wim Hof Method - but what exactly is this ‘method’ and how can it benefit you?

For those who might be lost, Wim Hof is a Dutch motivational speaker and extreme athlete noted for his ability to withstand freezing temperatures. He has set world records for swimming under ice and has since become a focus of scientists, whilst pioneering his very own Wim Hof Method. According to his own website, the method - developed over decades of experience - can be defined by ‘its simple, easy-to-apply approach and its strong scientific foundation. It’s a practical way to become happier, healthier, and stronger.’ The idea revolves around three ‘powerful’ pillars – Breathing, Cold Therapy and Commitment – all combined with frequent cold exposure, breathing techniques, yoga and meditation. Breathing The method claims to focus on breathing’s missed potential through controlled deep breathing, with heightened oxygen levels ‘holding a treasure trove of benefits’, such as more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response that swiftly deals with pathogens; all unlocked by Wim’s specialised breathing technique. Cold Therapy According to the Wim Hof website, proper exposure to cold starts a cascade of health benefits, including the buildup of brown adipose tissue and resultant fat loss, reduced inflammation that facilitates a fortified immune system, balanced hormone levels, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins. Commitment The third pillar of the Wim Hof Method is the basis of both cold exposure and conscious breathing. The method states that both require patience and dedication in order to be fully mastered. Wim Hof has amassed millions of followers and there are those who claim this method has helped transform their lives, and Wim himself has been the subject to scientific experiments to determine the benefits of his way of life. Now, whilst cold-water therapy has been proven to have multiple benefits on athletes such as reducing muscle soreness and injuries, some of the benefits are lacking in scientific evidence. However, there has been evidence of: a voluntary influence of the nervous system and immune system, anti-inflammatory effects, decreases in flu-like symptoms, increased levels of nervous system neurotransmitters, reductions in altitude sickness, and improved oxygen delivery during exercise.
