GHFs rescues and finds homes for greyhounds, hound crosses, beagles…
BUSINESS DESCRIPTION:
BACKGROUND: GHFs is a non-profit animal shelter in Hopkinton. In addition to finding homes for dogs we educate the public about what greyhounds and hounds are like as pets and about the plight these dogs face. BUSINESS HISTORY: GHFs began on Mothers’ Day, 1983 in Cambridge when founder Louise Coleman and her son brought home Boston Boy…….a retired racer who ended his career at Wonderland. Subsequently, many greyhounds were placed in good homes. The organization has placed thousands of dogs over the years. COMMENTS: GHFs aims to place as many dogs as possible and also to continually educate the public about animal welfare. GOALS: There are currently 13 tracks in Florida. Hundreds of greyhounds
there have to be brought North in order that they find homes. A major goal is to educate the public about this greyhound problem. Thousands of hound crosses, beagles, etc. are continually vulnerable in shelters in the Mid-West where there is little spay/neuter and the shelters have to put down a high percentage of dogs. Especially now with a struggling economy many dogs are owner surrendered. GHFs brings some of these dogs to our shelter as representatives of all the other dogs not fortunate enough to be rescued. AWARDS: Courage of Conscience Award, Peace Abbey, Reverence For Life Award, N.E. Anti-Vivesection Society, Commendations from both the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Senate, Greyhound Project’s Award for Twenty Years of Greyhound Welfare and Adoption.
The town of Northborough, originally part of the “town” of Marlborough, then Westborough, was incorporated in 1766 and became a full-fledged town with the right of representation at the Great and General Court of Boston in 1775. The early churches of Massachusetts, called “meeting houses,” were the center of all town activity. Built on land given by Capt. James Eager, Northborough’s first Meeting House stood about where the First Congregational Unitarian Church is today, on Church Street. Scattered along the tributaries of the Assabet River, numerous mills serve as markers of another kind, commemorating the places where textile manufacturing and other early industry boomed. Today, in addition to providing the setting for several working farms, Northborough Continued on following page

Law Office of Carolyn R. Spring Westborough attorney stresses advance planning for families, the elderly WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIALTIES? “My specialties are estate planning for all ages and elder law,” said Carolyn R. Spring, who graduated from Boston College Law School in 1983 and earned a certified financial planner degree in 1993. She offers a monthly free legal clinic at the Westborough Senior Center and the Grafton Senior Center. “I also do financial planning in conjunction with estate and retirement planning. I can give an objective opinion because I don’t sell any products. I help people make a financial game plan then refer them to other professionals.” WHAT LEGAL DOCUMENTS DO PEOPLE NEED? “At a minimum, everyone needs a will, a power of attorney and a health proxy. If you’re older, you need those documents so your kids don’t have to go into court to get permission to deal with your finances or assist with your medical care. “There’s nothing worse than dying without a will, no trust, no power of attorney. It’s a mess. Power of attorney is even more important than a will because it names someone to manage your finances if you cannot do so. “If you have young children, the only way to name a guardian is through a will. If you don’t have a will, the court will decide on the guardian, and your children could end up in foster care if relatives are fighting. You also have to have some type of trust because minor children can’t manage their own money. “I am happy to meet with parents of young children at their homes, because I know how difficult it can be to find a babysitter.”
YOU ARE WORKING ON THE LEGAL NEEDS OF OLDER WOMEN? “I’m interested in helping older women, whether they are widowed or divorced or never married, navigate the legal and financial minefield. So often many of them have no idea what to do. This interest is based on my personal experience when my mom was widowed in her 60s and had no financial knowledge. My financial planning background combined with my legal background enables me to guide and teach women about their individual situation.”
Carolyn R. Spring
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON? “I am adding a blog to my website, www.cspringlaw. com, which I am very excited about. In September, my television show started its second season on Westborough Cable TV. Its called ‘Law For Your Life’ and each month features a different topic with an expert guest. Among the topics will be estate planning, preservation of the family home, insurance, year-end tax tips, and topics of concern to the older members of our community. All shows can viewed online at www.westboroughtv.org/law_life.html. “In addition to the legal clinics, I also offer a free 1/2 hour consultation and a discount for senior citizens. Its my way of giving back to the community.”

What makes Marlborough Savings Bank (MSB) a Mutual Savings Bank?
What is your view of Community Banking?
Because our bank operates under a mutual savings charter, we answer to our depositors – not to shareholders. We are governed by a Board which is elected by Corporators who are members of the communities we serve. This allows us to make decisions in the best interests of our customers and the future of the Bank.
At MSB, we believe it’s our duty to support our community. Each year we donate thousands of dollars to local charities. Additionally, our employees are connected to these organizations through volunteering and active participation. We live and work here too!
What are the ¿nancial bene¿ts of banking with MSB?
What do you say to people who think it’s hard to change banks?
MSB is known for great, no hassle customer service. Our goal is to serve our customers with the highest Our employees make it a breeze to help customers switch to MSB. Our personal bankers will assist with value banking solutions such as: everything from direct deposit to setting up all of a customer’s bills in bill pay. • Free checking
• Free debit card • Free online banking and bill pay • Free unlimited ATM transactions at MSB & SUM terminals • Free E-Statements or paper statements
What do you do to stay accessible to customers? At MSB, we believe that ease of communication is key. In fact, we have direct phone numbers and emails right on our website… right on up to our CEO. You won’t ¿nd that at other ¿nancial institutions. And if someone chooses to call our main number during normal business hours, they get a live person, not an automated voice maze. This is very unique these days.

Marlborough is a great city at the crossroads of New England. Centrally located near the intersection of Routes 495, 290, 20 and the Massachusetts Turnpike, Marlborough is a busy commercial and political center. It is a thriving community that still retains the tree-covered ridges and idyllic ponds from its early days as a Native American and Colonial settlement. Marlborough celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2010 - its long history and commitment to the future makes this city an ideal location to live, work and play. General business description‌ Joy-Den opened as a small store in 1986 and has grown to become a high end retail jewelry store specializing in ďŹ ne jewelry and on site jewelry repair. In addition to me, we have a skilled sta who have extensive experience in the industry, including former Joy-Den owner Joyce Marino (27 years), Christine Cuthbert (27 years), Bonnie Sannacandro (20 years) and Mike Sannacandro (17 years). Background‌ Since I was a young child I have always had a passion for jewelry. Growing up in my family’s business, next to Joy-Den Jewelers, I spent a great deal of time watching Joyce’s business grow and knew I wanted to be part of it. After graduating Hudson High, I attended North Bennet Street School and earned a degree in jewelry making, repairs and gemstones. I started working as an apprentice at Joy-Den at the age of 14 and became manager after graduating college. A major turning point for me came when I had the opportunity to purchase the business a little over six years ago.

Most people would be surprised to know‌ That a downtown, individuallyy ha owned jewelry store oers such wide variety of cutting edge designs and one-ofa kind pieces. Our customers range from longtime Marlborough residents to our expanding clientele of professional hockey players.
I learned the most about running a business ‌ from former owner Joyce Marino and my parents who have run a successful business for over forty years. What makes your business unique or outstanding? The ability to have a customer bring in a sentimental piece of jewelry to be repaired or re-designed without the worry of their heirloom piece leaving our sight. With the original sta of employees, we have maintained a very trustworthy, friendly and honest atmosphere and our ďŹ ve jewelers are all well equipped to satisfy the needs of our customers.

What is your most popular product or service? There is not any one particular product. Our inventory is constantly growing and changing to keep up with the latest styles, yet we also maintain a great supply of timeless pieces. As for services, customers really appreciate our ability to repair jewelry on site. It could be as simple as ďŹ xing broken rosary beads at no charge to setting a $100,000 diamond. What is your specialty? We oer personalized attention and care of everyone that comes into the store. The best advice I ever got was ‌ To put out an excellent product at a fair and honest price and have the customer leave with a smile on their face.

Transforming interiors into works of art Décor Custom Interiors offers something no other home decorating showroom has: interior designer and proprietor Usha. “I have customers that I’m doing their third home,” Usha said. “When I go to a home consultation, I am totally into it: [the clients’] psychology, how they’ve decorated. Then I’m committed for the rest of their life... It’s a lifetime commitment.” That dedication to her customers clearly pays off. Usha credits Décor’s success to her own love of interior design. Although she has a degree in chemistry, she has worked in interior design for more than 30 years. “I am so passionate about it,” she said. The showroom reflects that passion, with artwork, furniture and draperies displayed as they would be in a home. In fact, Usha considers Décor both a destination for customers and a version of home for her. “When I come to work, I have come home in the most serene, relaxed place,” she said. “I want a very relaxed atmosphere here. “People will ask me what’s in style. I tell them, ‘You are the style’,” she said. “If it’s your home, if you’re putting your feelings into it, you’re going to collect things over time. You’re collecting the memories of your life. That’s your home.”

Décor Custom Interiors offers the services of experienced staff, including (l to r) owner Usha and Paula Hero.
That knowledge comes not only from years of experience, but also from her feelings about her customers, whether they are in Décor for the first time or have been back again and again. “It’s a matter of respect. I love my customers,” Usha said. “It’s a matter of respect both ways.” Usha can assist with color, fabric selection and overall design. “We have a range of price points,” she said. “I don’t care if you are spending $200 or $2,000.” Décor offers soft window treatments that range from ready-made to custom. Usha also does in-home consultations that can include color coordination, advice about windows, furniture placement, arrangement of artwork on walls and even staging. Also available in the showroom are decorating accents, artwork, blinds, furniture and beauty products. Usha admitted that she alone is not responsible for Décor’s success. Her employees are talented in their own right, she said. “They are wonderful with colors and design,” she said. “My employees, they are the body of my store, and I am the soul.” For the hours of Décor Custom Interiors at 26 South St., call 508-898-3169. Guided Step Fitness has helped people make drastic changes in their health and overall quality of life by blending advanced life coaching strategies with fitness, corrective exercise and nutrition. BACKGROUND: Chris Chaves started Guided Step Fitness while working his way up the corporate ladder of a large local corporation. He coached people before and after his “day job” and realized the satisfaction he got from completely transforming people’s lives was far greater that the satisfaction he got from his corporate paycheck thus deciding to follow his passion and made coaching his full time career.
BUSINESS HISTORY: Guided Step Fitness offers Professional Life Coaching, Personal Training (both private and semi-private) exercise program design, meal plans created by Registered Dietitians, Workshops and Corporate Fitness Programs. COMMENTS: Recent quote from Chris, “We all know people who have a gym membership that goes unused. We also know people who go to the gym but don’t get results because they don’t know the principles behind designing and effective exercise program or they don’t have anyone focused on holding them accountable. Guided Step Fitness and Life Coaching solves this problem by creating effective exercise programs tailored specifically to each person’s goals and needs. The workouts can be done independently, or with a Guided Step Fitness Trainer. With a little instruction, anyone can achieve and maintain their fitness goals.”

This area, lying along two heavily traveled thoroughfares containing routes 85 and 62, is now protected by the Silas Felton District Commission. The architectural significance of the Silas Felton District stems largely from the cohesiveness of the whole - it contains many fine examples of Colonial, Federal, Romanesque Revival and Victorian architecture along with newer harmonious structures built around the same time. The consistent style gives the center of town its distinctive character and makes it particularly interesting from an architectural standpoint. The dominant style of architecture in this area is Victorian (brick and stone) and includes homes of former leading citizens of the community, as well as churches and meeting halls. The Silas Felton District encompasses an area containing over 65 homes and businesses, but there are many other notable and carefully-restored homes in Hudson that reflect the character and charm of a bygone era. This year Hudson received a grant to restore the downtown business area with brick-lined sidewalks, tree plantings, reproduction gaslight streetlights and other improvements. This project, now completed, has had a major aesthetic impact on the downtown district. his past summer was one of the best for the Karen A. Scopetski Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage compared to the past three years. We were able to place several families and individuals in new homes and allow others to easily sell their properties much quicker than in years past. There are many reasons why the housing market is beginning to turn around for the positive; however according Freddie Mac, they are convinced the bottom had already dropped and housing sales and purchases will continue to rise. When we compare housing statistics, the best and most accurate comparison is to compare year-to-year in the same fiscal quarter. According to the MLS Property Information Network, the average amount of homes that were listed for sale in the MLS for Q-2 for fiscal year 2011 was 31 total properties. And according to this report, the average length of time each home was listed on the MLS prior to be sold was 185 days. However, for Q-2 in 2012, the average homes listed for sale increased to 49 in the Northborough MA area while time on MLS decreased significantly to an average of 129 days. This represents an increase of 37% of houses and townhomes for sale in the Northborough MA area. Most of the properties which are showing significant improvements in listings and time on market are those who are priced in the $250,000 - $299,999 and $300,000 - $349,999 pricing category. So it is apparent that the market is improving. And we are ready to help you either sell your current property or help find that perfect home to meet your needs and fulfill your dreams. The fall season is also a great time to get your home ready for winter.
