For deaths in 2012, up to $5.12 million in assets is exempt from Federal estate taxes and up to $1 million in assets is exempt from Massachusetts estate taxes. In 2013, the Federal estate tax exemption is scheduled to be reduced to $1 million with an increased 55% top tax rate.
