A Case for Doing Business Locally
oday the phrase “Shop Local” has almost become cliché. It’s on bumper stickers, newspaper ads and is even the subject of an ad campaign for one of the nation’s largest credit card companies… but does it really matter? The answer is a resounding YES! If you are feeling frustrated that the national economy is beyond your control, you can actually make an impact in your own backyard by spending your dollars right here in town. We’ve heard the statistics: When you spend $100 locally… $62 remains in the local economy. When you shop at a national chain, that same $100 will David Bagdon Publisher keep $42 in town, and when you buy online….$0 from that $100 will benefit the local economy… think about that for a moment. When you do business locally you are helping to support your neighbors and your community. You’re helping a neighbor provide for their family, you’re helping them sponsor a local team, and you’re helping them succeed so they in turn can reinvest here in town. When was the last time you saw Amazon sponsor a local sports team? But, like all good deeds, buying locally does take a little effort. You’ll need to step away from the computer and drive a couple of miles… you may even have to wait a few moments in line, but you’ll be doing your part to strengthen your hometown economy. The Community Advocate is celebrating our 40th year as a local business and we congratulate the local businesses that are succeeding in our communities. This holiday season and throughout the year ahead, we urge you keep your dollars in town where they will have a direct impact on the local economy.

WE CHANGE A Digital GymLIVES
A Digital Gym
An open letter to our community, Fitness is a very personal choice. We all want to be fit and healthy, but how we choose to do it, or not, becomes very individual for every person. We started Koko FitClub in Hudson, Marlborough, Natick and Shrewsbury because we believe there was something missing for people (us included) for whom big, mainstream gyms simply don’t work. A Digital Gym Traditional gyms have never provided us with the support and guidance that we needed to get the results we hoped for. We’ve always had the motivation, but we have never had a program that kept us engaged for very long, either mentally or physically. And as our lives got busier, gyms became less and less a part of our lives -- other than when it was time to pay the monthly bill. We believe being healthy is one of the most important responsibilities we have to ourselves and our families. Plus, we like how we feel when we are in better shape. So, giving up wasn’t an option for us. We also knew a lot of people were struggling just like we were, so we decided to do something about it. We became determined to be part of a gym that would provide everything a typical person in the real world needed to get on -- and stay on -- a healthy path.

Jennifer Juliano, Keller Williams Realty I’ll Make It Happen. You’ll Make It Home I have been enjoying specializing in the residential real estate market assisting both home buyers and sellers throughout the Greater MetroWest region since 2000, from as far east as Boston and of course, locally here in my hometown of Southborough. My clientele has ranged from rst-time sellers / buyers, “move-up / downsizers,” relocation clients, and new construction sales. I also assist clients with matching them to the other industry professionals such as lenders, attorneys, inspectors, home improvement contractors, etc. who are best suited for their budget, style and needs. As one of the original agents in the rst Keller Williams offices to open in the New England Region in 2000 and a brand-new agent at the time, I was very fortunate to have the personal mentorship and guidance of several well-known and experienced agents early on in my career. Teaching and mentoring is a passion of mine whether it is by explaining to a client how the process works and what to expect next to help ease their transaction, or to give the same assistance to a new or even other experienced agents. I have also spent extensive time in various KW offices teaching classes, one:one mentorship, and providing guidance to other agents to help them launch or re-launch. I also offer advice on how to handle a transaction…sometimes regardless of company affiliation as we truly all do work together in this industry and we can all learn from each other. I was also taught very early on that forging good and pleasant working relationships with our fellow agent community is very important for long-term success, and it has proved time and again to make transactions much easier for all involved.
What makes your company a good choice to do business with? Keller Williams Realty as a franchise has grown exponentially throughout the years because of its focus on agent-branding versus companybranding, career development, how to run our real estate businesses as businesses, and prot-sharing. It has been ranked as the #2 Training Company in the world across all industries and has offices in all of North America as well as numerous offices overseas. It has reported record agent count, productivity and protability gains. Over the past year, the company has extended its lead as the largest real estate franchise by agent count in North America, growing at approximately four times the rate of membership in the National Association of REALTORS®. Since January 2014, Keller Williams has added 12,000 net associates, bringing its overall associate count above 107,000. For agents who enjoy having their freedom in how to run their business without a corporate feel and both short- and long-term wealth building options, KW has been found to be the company of choice to work for and with even from a consumer’s perspective as each agent has a vested interest in the success of each transaction their office closes.
Several Production Awards Through The Years, ranging from “Rookie of the Year” for the Board of Realtors and KW Westborough in 2001 up to Top Commissions Earned (2013), “KW New England Cultural Icon, and Top Agent Recruiter among others.

BUSINESS DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: We offer total estate cleanouts, the whole house, one room or one item. We are more than happy to help people move. We will also do small demolition jobs too. All metal will be taken for free on every cleanout to be recycled. We take tires, paint cans and air conditioners. We reclaim air conditioners and refrigerators. We break them down and take out the motors and copper to get the best price for scrap. We serve all of Metrowest and Worcester County.
WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY A GOOD CHOICE TO DO BUSINESS WITH? We try to recycle most of what we get; clothing, toys, books, etc. or donate much of it to charities in the area, such as clothes to the Salvation Army. We would rather give somebody a bureau than throw it in the trash. There’s no sense throwing everything in the landfill. We do a better job for our customers than if they were to rent a dumpster. If a mattress or a tire is thrown in there, the dumpster staff goes through the load and will back-charge for those items. The bill may end up being considerably more than the expected rental fee.

Westborough attorney stresses advance planning for families, the elderly WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIALTIES? “My specialties are estate planning for all ages and elder law,” said Carolyn R. Spring, who graduated from Boston College Law School in 1983 and earned a certified financial planner degree in 1993. She offers a monthly free legal clinic at the Westborough Senior Center and the Grafton Senior Center. WHAT LEGAL DOCUMENTS DO PEOPLE NEED? “At a minimum, everyone needs a will, a power of attorney and a health proxy. If you’re older, you need those documents so your children don’t have to go into court to get permission to deal with your finances or assist with your medical care. “There’s nothing worse than dying without a will, no trust, no power of attorney. It’s a mess. Power of attorney is even more important than a will because it names someone to manage your finances if you cannot do so. “If you have young children, the only way to name a guardian is through a will. If you don’t have a will, the court will decide on the guardian, and your children could end up in foster care if relatives are fighting. You also have to have some type of trust because minor children can’t manage their own money. “I am happy to meet with parents of young children at their homes, because I know how difficult it can be to find a babysitter.” YOU ARE WORKING ON THE LEGAL NEEDS OF OLDER WOMEN? “I’m interested in helping older women, whether they are widowed or divorced or never married, navigate the legal and financial minefield. So often many of them have no idea what to do. This interest is based on my personal experience
when my mom was widowed in her 60s and had no financial knowledge. My financial planning background combined with my legal background enables me to guide and teach women about their individual situation. I also teach a course on financial, estate and retirement planning for women at Assabet After Dark located at Assabet Valley Technical High School in Marlborough.”

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON? “In September, my television show started its fourth season on Westborough Cable TV. It is called ‘Law For Your Life’ and each month features a different topic with an expert guest. Past topics have included estate planning, protection of the family home, insurance, year-end tax tips, and topics of concern to the older members of our community. Currently, the show is going through the process to follow when moving a family member to an assisted living residence. I recently did this and thought this would help others going through the same thing. It can be overwhelming for a family even if you know what to do. All of the TV shows can be viewed on Westborough Television’s public channel or online at www.westboroughtv.org/law_life.html. “In addition to the legal clinics, I also offer a free 1/2 hour consultation and a discount for senior citizens. It is my way of giving back to the community.”

Stephanie G Jewelers
Hopkinton jeweler can create custom designed gifts for holidays Hopkinton - Stephanie G Jewelers can help you create a unique piece of jewelry as the perfect holiday gift for someone special. Stephanie Goldberg, owner of the downtown Hopkinton retailer and the fourth generation of jewelers in her family, specializes in custom designs in wedding jewelry and fashion pieces. “Custom jewelry doesn’t have to be expensive. I do a lot of designing in sterling silver and a lot of chunky fashion jewelry. Not everything in the jewelry box has to be a million dollars,” she said with a laugh. Stephanie also suggests looking through that jewelry box for pieces no longer worn and using the materials in a new, updated piece. “People’s tastes change over the years, and you may want to redesign rather than repair some older pieces. “We do a lot of designs for travel, including making copies of expensive pieces in materials like silver and cubic zirconia,” she added. The stones in heirloom jewelry might be used to create pieces for several members of a family as a special, memorial gift. “I’ve been working with a customer who is using the stones from an antique bracelet to create a separate pendant and earrings set for four different family members. Each set will be different, tailored to the taste of the woman who will receive it,” she said. Custom designs do take time, and Stephanie recommends starting now to have the gift ready for the holiday season. “If you start now, you can be a significant part of the design process and make changes as we go. Come in and we can talk
about the possibilities.” Stephanie uses a 3-D CAD design system so customers can see and alter possible designs. Stephanie G Jewelers has many other options for your gift-giving needs. “We let people create wish lists at the store, with several options and prices,” she noted. “Wish lists make the givers feel good because they are giving something wanted. They feel like a hero.” The store offers a special price on items purchased from a wish list. Every Wednesday in December, the store hosts a men’s night, with refreshments and the chance for men to check out those wish lists or get some expert advice on what the special people in their lives might like to receive. The store carries an extensive collection of fashion jewelry starting at $50 for sterling silver pieces and including the latest bangle-style bracelets from Pandora. Stephanie is expanding the selection of pearl jewelry this year. “Pearls never go out of style. And if you have an older pearl necklace, we can redesign it, perhaps adding black and gray freshwater pearls.” She also brings in a broad selection of gift items from $10 to $25 for the holidays, perfect for teachers, as thank-you gifts and as stocking stuffers. “The parking here is easier than at the mall, and we will gift wrap a purchase,” she pointed out. For the men on your gift list, Stephanie G stocks a wide array of watches, as well as accessories such as money clips, watch boxes, and valet boxes for the dresser top. The store has watch winders for the very expensive watches not powered by batteries. Men’s fashion jewelry choices include trendy
Stephaaniie Go G ldberg, owner of Stephanie G Jewelers bracelets made from black rubber or carbon fiber. The retailer is also expanding its selection of bridal jewelry and jewelry for younger girls. Stephanie fills an unusual design niche as well. “I make cool medic alert bracelets that are interesting, durable and contemporary,” she said. The bracelets, often in sterling silver, can be designed in a style to complement a wearer’s wardrobe while still filling the necessary function of warning of allergies, illnesses and other serious medical conditions. Stephanie G Jewelers is adding an online ordering capability to its website, www.stephaniegjewelers.com, in time for the holidays so customers will be able to buy diamonds and other jewelry online. Stephanie G Jewelers is located at 77 Main St., Hopkinton. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday; and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday The store is closed on Sunday and Monday. Additional information is available on the website, www.stephaniegjewelers.com. For more information or to schedule an appointment to discuss custom design work, call 508-435-4444.

GHF rescues and finds homes for greyhounds, hound crosses, beagles… Business History/ Background: Greyhound Friends is a nonprofit animal shelter in Hopkinton. In addition to finding homes for dogs we educate the public about what greyhounds and hounds are like as pets and about the plight these dogs face. GHF began on Mothers’ Day, 1983 in Cambridge, MA when founder Louise Coleman and her son brought home “Boston Boy,” a retired racer who ended his career at Wonderland. Subsequently, many greyhounds were placed in good homes. The organization has placed thousands of dogs over the years. Our goal is to place as many dogs as possible and also to continually educate the public about animal welfare.

There are currently 12 tracks in Florida. Hundreds of greyhounds from there have to be brought north in order to find homes. We are also working with protection groups in Argentina because many greyhounds from Florida are being sent to Argentina for racing and hunting. There is no animal welfare legislation there so we are trying to protect them. Thousands of hound crosses, beagles, etc. are continually vulnerable in shelters in the Mid-West where there is little spay/neuter and the shelters have to put down a high percentage of dogs. GHF brings some of these dogs to our shelter as representatives of all the other dogs not fortunate enough to be rescued. We have received many awards in recognition of our adoption services.

Meacham was founded in 1986 by Mark and Sue Meacham. They have worked together as a team to provide a high level of service for many of you and your neighbors in central Mass. and Metrowest. Their concern has always been to make sure that you are comfortable while optimizing your energy dollars for efficiency, safety and good health. Mark is a graduate of Northeast Institute of Industrial Technology with a degree in HVAC/R design, installation and service. Mark holds all of the industry related licenses and has a multitude of industry certifications. Sue is a graduate of Green Mountain College with a degree in office management and likewise holds many industry licenses and certifications. Together with their highly qualified staff they have over 200 years of combined industry experience.
All the knowledge and skill does not cut it if they are not providing you with WOW customer service. They want you to experience the difference because they care and are willing to go the extra mile for your comfort, safety, good health and energy efficiency. Not only do they design, engineer and install systems, they have a dedicated service department to take care of all your comfort needs 24/7. Don’t take their word for it, here’s what Mike from Auburn has to say: “Superior experience from first call to final installation. Salesperson went above and beyond for all of our needs including HEAT Loan facilitation. Installation was excellent. A/C is functioning perfectly since installation. It was the best possible experience. Thank you!”
The company became a WBE (Woman Business Enterprise), in 2009 in order to take advantage of state and federal opportunities. With Massachusetts being a leader in the nation for energy efficiency programs, many doors and opportunities have opened for residential as well as commercial work. Recently the company completed a project at Autumn Woods apartment complex in Worcester with Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD). ABCD approves projects based on qualifying energy measures and savings. Meacham makes a conscious effort to stay current with industry changes by being involved with local and national organizations, such as Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), Plumbing Heating and Cooling Contractors (PHCC), the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce. They are also members of National Comfort Institute (NCI) for business development and technical training.
