CREEPING INTO THE EYE
W
hile we usually associate herpes simplex virus with cold sores, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can also affect the eyes. Usually, only one eye is affected, and the infection involves the cornea (the transparent dome at the front of the eye). How does this happen? It may help to know that the name “herpes” comes from the Greek word meaning “to creep.” In the majority of cases, exposure to herpes occurs during childhood. Then, after remaining dormant for many years, it may be reactivated and spread down the nerves to the face and/or eye due to reasons not completely understood. In order to treat superficial corneal infections, antiviral drops and antiviral ointments may be all that are needed. P.S. Deeper, more severe corneal infections involving HSV-1 will likely require steroid drops to reduce inflammation and prevent corneal scarring.
