HHS hockey caps recordsetting regular season
The HHS hockey team set a school record when it finished the regular season at 19-1 following a 9-0 rout of host Norton on Feb. 17. A day earlier, senior Sean Walsh became the all-time leading scorer in team history when he scored in the Hillers’ 8-1 victory over host Martha’s Vineyard in the championship game of the Fairleigh Dickinson Tournament.
The Hillers were set to be the top seed in the Division 3 South sectional tournament. …
T h e H H S girls basketball team clinched a spot in the state tournament in its penultimate regularseason game, a 59-40 victory over Algonquin at the Westborough Tournament on Feb. 16. Sophomore Kiki Fossbender scored 21 points to lead the Hillers. Sophomore Lauren Cho added 13 points and senior Cami McDonald added nine via three 3-pointers. The Hillers rallied to win six of eight games down the stretch in order to earn a postseason invitation, finishing with a 10-10 record. …
The boys basketball team struggled to the finish line of the regular season, losing seven of its final eight games to drop to 10-10. However, the lone win in that stretch, an 80-51 rout of visiting Medfield on Feb. 7, clinched a postseason bid.

Dionne, Zaidi win wrestling titles
At the Division 2 Central sectional wrestling meet on Feb. 16 at Marlborough High School, Hopkinton finished seventh in the team competition. Luke Dionne (113 pounds) and Mo Zaidi (126) won individual titles. Jake Sokol took second at 170 pounds. Also performing well for the Hillers were John Carlson, who took fourth at 106 pounds, Will Tedstone, fifth at 138, Sebastian Losada, fifth at 145, and Hayes Pearson-Woodruff, sixth at 220. …
At the Feb. 13 Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League slalom meet, senior brothers Max and Jack Rodgers finished first and second to lead the boys to a second-place team finish. Jackson Schlussel (fifth), Will Hutchinson (16th) and Cameron Hannah (21st) also qualified for the state championship, which is March 4 at Berkshire East in Charlemont. On the girls side, Cate Barry finished third in the Feb. 13 league race to lead her team to a seventh-place finish and qualify for the state championship. …
Hopkinton High School sophomore Tess Weatherhead finished sixth in the 1-meter diving competition at the Division 2 girls swimming and diving state championship meet on Feb. 15. In the boys meet the following day, Alex Matsoukas finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
The previous week at the South sectional meet, the HHS girls finished eighth (better than any other Tri-Valley League team), led by Weatherhead and Grace Cavanaugh, who was ninth in the 50 free. The boys finished 21st as a team. Matsoukas was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
Calkins wins rookie awards
Hopkinton’s Natalie Calkins, a freshman lacrosse player at Merrimack College, got her collegiate career off to a strong start, being named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week twice, for the first two weeks of the season. She scored three goals off the bench in her collegiate debut, a 19-11 loss to Vermont on Feb. 8. In her next game, she earned the start at attacker and scored two goals in a 15-9 loss to New Hampshire on Feb. 11. Then on Feb. 16, Calkins scored three second-half goals in a six-minute span as Merrimack earned its first victory as a Division 1 program, a 10-9 win at Canisius.
HHS girls race to D3 indoor track title
finished second, the 4x200 relay team (Delaney Mick, Hailey Tolson, Caroline Estella and Maggie Allen) took third, and Mick was sixth in the 55-meter dash. All of the aforementioned athletes advanced to the All-State meet.
Also for Hopkinton, Mick took seventh in the 300, Allen was seventh in the hurdles, Catherine Dacey was eighth in the 600, DeLuca took eighth in the 1,000, and the 4x400 relay team (Dacey, Sinead Herr, Sowmya Karthikeyan and Estella) finished eighth.
“Our relays really helped,” Cann said. “We were only predicted to get fifth in the 4x200 and not score in either the 4x400 or 4x800, but we scored in all three. Caroline Estella was sick with a bad head cold for most of the week, so we talked to her and decided to pull her from her individual event [300] to maximize her potential in the relays. She was on both the 4x200 and 4x400.

year, with scoring potential in every event,” Cann added. “Kate Powers has been an awesome addition to the team and she exceeded her seed with a second place in shot put. Every little thing like the relays and Hope DeLuca and Catherine Dacey running personal bests to score points contributed, as we only won by four points [over Milford].”
On the boys side, the Hillers finished sixth as a team. Top individual performances came from brothers Alex Brown and Nick Brown, who were second and fourth, respectively. in the 2-mile. Ian Cann was fifth in the 1,000 and Harrison Prucher was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles. Hopkinton piled up points in the relays, as the 4x200 squad (Chris Benham, Devin Kelly, Aidan Rowell and Prucher) took third, the 4x400 team (Patrick Barnes, Benham, Kelly and Julien Fernandez) finished fourth, and the 4x800 team (Cann, Alex Brown, Cody Ottinger and Anthony Zeissig) came in seventh.
