Barber Baz recognised for giving to our community
THIS year marks a significant milestone for Tapered the Barbershop, as owner Burak “Baz” Tastan and his team celebrate eight years of serving the Quakers Hill community.
And it’s not just with top-tier cuts, but also with a profound dedication to giving back.
Since opening its doors, Tapered the Barbershop has become more than just a place for fresh fades and sharp trims. Under Baz’s leadership, it has transformed into a hub for community support, offering free haircuts to the homeless, supporting local charities, and raising funds for vital causes.
Baz has been a strong advocate for mental health, championing initiatives like It’s Okay Not to Be Okay, RUOK Day, and many other organizations aimed at breaking the stigma around mental well-being. His barbershop has become a safe space where conversations go beyond just hair—offering support, understanding, and connection.
In recognition of his unwavering commitment, Tapered the Barbershop has been nominated once again for the Local Business Awards—an honor they have proudly won twice before.
This latest nomination reaffirms the
impact that Baz and his team have had on the community and their continued pursuit of excellence, both in their craft and in their community contributions.
“As barbers, we don’t just cut hair—we listen, we connect, and we support,” says Baz Tastan. “This shop has always been about more than just business. It’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable, where they can talk, and where we can give back to those who need it most.”
As Tapered the Barbershop celebrates its 8th anniversary, the Local community stands behind their community support.
Parklea Correctional Centre back in public hands
THE NSW Government will bring the management of Parklea Correctional Centre back into public hands in one of the largest de-privatisation moves in NSW history.
The decision to return the management of this vital service to the public sector will secure over 400 well-paid public sector jobs for workers in Western Sydney.
The 1,576-bed facility at Parklea is Sydney’s second-largest remand centre and has been managed by MTC Australia (previously MTC Broadspectrum) since 2018, with its existing contract expiring in March 2026.
The contract will be extended by six months, to allow sufficient time for the transition to occur in October 2026.
Parklea will become the second
NSW prison to return to public ownership after Corrective Services NSW takes over the management of Junee Correctional Centre on 1 April 2025, following a 16-month transition.
The NSW public sector is currently responsible for around 10,000 inmates across 31 prisons.
Corrective Services NSW and Justice Health will work with MTC, current employees, the Public Service Association of NSW, as well as the local community, as part of the transition.
A Corrective Services NSW transition team will be established to provide
timely updates and additional support to current staff throughout the transition period.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the government began bringing Junee Correctional Centre back into public hands in 2023, and today, the first step has been taken in making Parklea public again.
"Frontline staff who work at Parklea Correctional Centre today will have a job at Parklea – regardless of the changes,” Mr Minns said.
"This is a win for hundreds of essential workers in Western Sydney as we rebuild essential services for

Men’s behaviour program at Blacktown
RELATIONSHIPS Aus-
tralia NSW (RANSW) is expanding its Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) to Blacktown thanks to an additional $1.6M investment from the NSW Government.
RANSW CEO Elisabeth Shaw said RANSW will be bringing its extensive experience in delivering MBCPs to the Blacktown community from February 2025.
“Relationship Australia NSW’s program supports men in taking responsibility for their abusive behaviour, while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of victim survivors,” Ms Shaw said.
“Our MBCP provides men with a unique opportunity, outside of the criminal justice system, to interrupt destructive patterns of behaviour
Tthrough intensive casework and an 18-week group program.
“For those who engage and commit to the process, considerable change is possible, especially when they continue addressing their issues
through our counselling and group work programs.”
“Through the program, women and children also separately receive vital education and support to strengthen their capacity to manage safety and wellbeing, ensur-
ing a more holistic approach to addressing domestic and family violence.”
The funding will provide support to approximately 280 people per year.
“On behalf of RANSW, I’d like to thank the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Jodie Harrison and the NSW Government for this investment in the safety of women and children across our state,” Ms Shaw said.
Steven* joined RANSW’s Taking Responsibility Men’s Behaviour Change Program after his children stopped living with him due to safety concerns.
“I see how my partner’s face has changed and when she looks at me, I see love instead of fear,” Steven said.
“My children can now express themselves and I
can help them with their big emotions instead of screaming at them and scaring them. I appreciate these relationships so much, and I was so close to losing all of them.”
Steven’s participation in the program brought significant changes. His children were reunited with him and his partner, and both Steven and his partner joined parenting support programs.
Steven’s partner also attended RANSW’s Women’s Choice and Change workshop.
RANSW’s MBCP is also available in the Sydney CBD, Illawarra, Hunter and online, with more than 400 people taking part in the program in 2024.

Car buyers warned over tampering
USED-car buyers in Blacktown are being urged to check a vehicle’s history before purchase after NSW Fair Trading issued 28 fines in a month and a man was sentenced to a nine-month intensive corrections order for unlicenced motor dealing and odometer tampering.
During the crackdown, NSW Fair Trading issued 54 penalty notices in relation to car sales and repairs valued at more than $100,000. While more than half were for odometer interference, other offences included the non-supply of goods and services, and unlicensed vehicles and sales.
Additionally, Andrew Rodney Leech pled guilty to operating without a motor dealer’s licence and odometer tampering. Between 2020 and 2022 Leech sold 16 vehicles while unlicensed, online with one car having an odometer that had been wound back by more than
200,000 kilometres.
Buyers of used vehicles are being urged to research the car’s history to ensure it has no outstand-
Ting finance, has not been written off in a crash, and has accurate odometer readings.
The NSW Government offers a free vehicle registration check where prospective buyers have access to a NSW-registered vehicle’s previous three annual odometer readings, as well as basic details like vehicle make, registration and insurance history.
Across the motor vehicle industry in 2024, NSW Fair Trading took disciplinary action against 21 licensed motor vehicle dealers and repairers, resulting in 10 licence cancellations, 13 disqualifications including three permanent, and one suspension.
For more information on consumer protections relating to purchasing a used vehicle visit the NSW Fair Trading website here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/buyingand-selling-vehicles/buying-a-used-vehicle

FUTURE PROOF YOUR CHILD’S CAREER
Careers of Today special event
AS we enter 2025, the landscape of work continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Transformational breakthroughs, particularly generative AI, are shaping industries, tasks, and the way business is done across all sectors.
The Blacktown News is supporting a unique event on March 18 at Penrith Panthers that will present an expert panel discussing Careers of Today plus 10 exhibitor stalls to visit and engage with. The event will be moderated by Lee Ussher, digital media expert and trainer at Buzz Web Media.
Places are still available for this event, which is designed for parents and senior students.
Technological advances are converging with a broader array of challenges, including economic volatility (cost of living crisis, inflation), environmental challenges, and evolving societal expectations.
Did you know that AI will displace 92 million jobs but create 170 million new ones?
Did you know that your child will likely have 17 different jobs across five different careers over their working life?
At the Careers of Today event on March 18 at Penrith Panthers, you will hear from industry experts within fields where demand is high – including construction, technology, and the care economy (childcare, counsellors, and
collective industries within the Western Sydney International Airport).
Employers today are shifting their focus from traditional qualifications to capabilities and skills. In 2025, the top skills will be analytical thinking, resilience/agility, leadership, creative thinking, technological literacy, motivation, empathy, and curiosity. By 2030, the core skills will evolve to include AI proficiency, networks and cybersecurity, creative thinking, resilience, and leadership.
Understanding future career trends is essential for parents. The jobs that exist today may look very different—or
may not exist at all—by the time your child enters the workforce.
Parents play a critical role in guiding children towards future-ready skills and career pathways that align with the rapidly evolving job market.
Whether it’s encouraging problem-solving, digital literacy, or entrepreneurial thinking, staying informed about the opportunities ahead will help your child thrive in an unpredictable world.
So, how can you ensure your child is ready for these changes?
Encourage them to develop in-demand skills while at school through part-time work, team sports, leadership opportunities, entrepreneurship, and short courses.
The Careers of Today event is proudly sponsored by CathWest Innovation College, with campuses in Mount Druitt and Emu Plains. These schools are proactive in developing skills that will set students apart in the future workforce.
Don’t miss this opportunity to future-proof your child’s career. Book your place today.

Melissa’s call to action for our youth
MELISSSA Wu is a name synonymous with strength, resilience, and excellence.
A five-time Olympian diver, she’s competed at the highest levels, managing immense pressure from a young age. But behind the many medals and accolades, Melissa has faced her own mental health struggles—a challenge she now works hard to help others overcome.
This April 12th-13th, 2025, Melissa will take on a new role as Ambassador for the Walk Festival, a cause close to her heart. The event raises funds for Breed Australia and focuses on building mental health resilience in young people, particularly those in Blacktown and in Western Sydney.
But the festival isn’t just about fundraising; it’s about uniting the community to support the mental health of our youth.
“I’m excited to be part of this event,” Melissa says. “I’ll be walking the 100km challenge around Blacktown International Sports Park, and I’d love to see you there walking alongside me. If 100km feels too much, don’t worry! There are also the 50km Team Walk and a 10km community walk, with casual walker's welcome. No matter your fitness level, it’s about coming together for a cause that truly matters.”
And it’s not just about the walk.
The festival will feature something for everyone, including live dances, food trucks, jumping castles, and a range of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. It’s an opportunity to have fun, make a difference, and support a cause that’s close to home.
Melissa’s journey hasn’t been easy.
“Growing up, I often felt isolated and struggled with my mental health around the age of 16 or 17,” she said.
“Despite my early success, I didn’t know
how to cope with the pressures I was facing. I was lucky to have a supportive family, but it took me years to learn how to manage my mental health.”
Sadly, many young people don’t have that support. In Western Sydney, nearly 1 in 5 youth face mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress. Many, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, lack the tools or knowledge to manage these issues. This is where Breed Australia steps in.
For over 30 years, Breed Australia
has been empowering young people in Western Sydney, offering programs that build resilience, improve mental health, and teach valuable life, career and business skills. The Walk Festival aims to raise funds so even more young people can access these critical services.
As a proud Western Sydney local, Melissa is passionate about giving back to the community that shaped her. “I want young people to know they’re not alone,” she said.
This festival is more than just an event—it’s a movement. A movement to unite our community and raise awareness for mental health initiatives for young people. The event has already gained strong backing from Blacktown Council, including Mayor Brad Bunting, a dedicated advocate for youth mental health and personal patron for the cause.
By taking part in the Walk Festival, you’re not just walking—you’re supporting local youth facing mental health challenges. Your participation will directly help fund programs that provide young people with the resilience and coping skills they need.

Celebrating Unity and Diversity: Blacktown’s Harmony Day 2025
In a time when social cohesion in Australia has been tested, it is more important than ever to come together and reaffirm the values that make our society strong: inclusivity, respect, and belonging. Sponsored by Blacktown City Council, SydWest’s Harmony Day celebration will take place on the 21st March. This year, the Day Against Racial Discrimination should be a powerful reminder that “everyone belongs” and that diversity is not a challenge, but a source of strength and resilience for our community.
Art without Limits
Celebrating Creativity and Inclusion
We recently hosted our first-ever Art Without Limits event at the Croydon Hub, thanks to funding from the Inner West Council. This event celebrated the amazing talents of artists with disabilities in our community.
Highlights:
101 attendees, with nearly a quarter being people with disabilities.
• 10 artists (8 with disabilities and 2 collaborators) showcased their work.
• 38 artworks including textiles, drawings, paintings, photography, jewelry, and mixed media.
Over $3000 worth of art sold, with all proceeds going directly to the artists.
Our event will showcase the rich cultural fabric of Blacktown, bringing people together to celebrate, learn, and reflect on the importance of unity. Through engaging speakers, cultural performances, and meaningful discussions, we will highlight how our differences and shared experiences enrich our society, making Australia a better place for all.
Now more than ever, we must stand against division and ensure that everyone - regardless of background - feels valued and included. This event is not just a celebration; it is a call to action to support our new comers, embrace our diversity, and strengthen the bonds that unite us. Only together, we can build a more inclusive and harmonious future for all.
We invite the community to join us, celebrate with us, and be part of the conversation on how we can continue to foster a society where every individual feels safe, respected, and at home.
Unsold artworks are now available on our Instagram page. Check them out!
A huge thank you to everyone who made this event a success and to all who attended. Your support means the world to us!
This was just the beginning. Here’s to many more celebrations of creativity and inclusion!

Success Story: Job Readiness in Construction
The importance of collaboration between the sector and NFP
For the past three years, SydWest has teamed up with John Holland and TAFE NSW to help newly arrived migrants and refugees kickstart careers in construction. The latest 9-week program, completed in late 2024, saw 15 participants gain essential skills, hands-on experience, and a White Card.
Meet the Participants:
• Adam: A civil engineer from Sudan, Adam improved his English at TAFE NSW while completing the program. He’s now working part-time with a local construction company.
Reza: From Afghanistan, Reza specialized in bricklaying and concreting. The program boosted his confidence and skills, leading to full-time work with a building contractor in south-west Sydney.
Jonathan: Originally from Tanzania, Jonathan recently finished high school in Australia. Excelling in the program, he secured a full-time job with a large landscape and civil construction service.
With another program starting mid-2025, interest is already high. This success is thanks to the strong partnership between SydWest, TAFE NSW, and John Holland, ensuring smooth transitions into the workforce for migrants and refugees.

Empowering
people with disabilities
I RECENTLY walked through the building site of the Blacktown Disability
Sports Centre at Blacktown International Sports Park and it’s coming along nicely.
The centre will give people of all abilities the opportunity to use state of the art sports facilities.
It will include two multipurpose courts for a variety of sports and activities, as well as support for balancing training with work and study commitments.
Disability Sports Australia and Volleyball NSW will be among the first users of the centre.
Council is delivering the project which is fully funded
by the NSW Government. I will be sure to let you know when the venue opens mid-year.
A tribute to a servant of community sport
I WAS saddened to learn of the passing of a man synonymous with Doonside Little Athletics, and other sports around Blacktown City, Ron Keys OAM.
Ron volunteered at Doonside Little Athletics for more than 40 years in a number of roles and helped countless children develop skills and confidence.
He helped organise Blacktown fun runs such as Relay for Life, trained teams at Doonside Junior Rugby League, and was President of Parklea Golf Club.
A couple of weeks ago I joined Doonside Little Athletics members at Charlie Bali Reserve to unveil the Ron Keys Stand and plant a tree in his honour.
We will miss Ron dearly.

WE ARE A LOCAL CHILDRENS CHARITY SYDNEY
The Kids West is only one of the many children's charities in Australia. Its mission is to raise money for the childrens hospital fund, delivering much-needed equipment to the hospitals of western Sydney Over the course of 30+ years, Kids West has raised in excess of $7.2m and is one of the best Australian charities to suppor t dedicated countless hours to assisting a large number of organisations in improving the health and wellbeing of children throughout Western Sydney. Below are some of the other fantastic childrens charities Australia has in place As with any children's charity, it's best to do your research. Unfor tunately, there are organisations out there that take advantage of well-meaning souls and misappropriate funds Some organisations, as charitable as their intentions may be, cost a lot to run so your donations may not actually get to where you're intending them to go.
What to Consider When Making a Childrens Hospital Donation
Research the charity thoroughly BEFORE getting out your chequebook. (ACNC) is the national regulator of charities. More eggs means healthy hearts
AMONASH University study found that eating eggs 1-6 times per week is linked to a 29% lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related death and a 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality in older adults. Published in Nutrients, the study suggests eggs provide essential nutrients and support longevity, especially in moderate-to-high-quality diets. Findings also indicate no increased risk for individuals with high cholesterol, supporting eggs as a nutritious, accessible food for older adults.
Legal questions about self-driving cars
AS self-driving and semi-autonomous vehicles become more common, legal questions arise about liability in accidents. Slater and Gordon’s Bree Smith highlights the evolving legal landscape, emphasizing the need for public awareness. While fully autonomous cars remain
in trials, semi-autonomous features like Tesla’s Autopilot complicate fault determination. With no uniform national laws yet, the Federal Government is developing the Automated Vehicle Safety Law to regulate autonomous driving by 2030 and clarify liability issues.

Running Monday to Friday, 10:30-11:30am, most stores will reduce lighting, lower noise, and minimize disruptions. Launched in 2019 with Life Without Barriers, Quiet Hour now operates in 900+ stores nationwide, enhancing accessibility and independence for customers. The expansion follows successful trials during peak shopping periods like Christmas.
Prison staff and inmate relationships
THE NSW Government has strengthened laws to criminalize all sexual relationships between prison staff and inmates, removing the need to prove risk to prison safety. The Crimes (Administration of Sentences) Act 1999 now imposes criminal liability, including prison sentences. This follows an inquiry into misconduct at Dillwynia Correctional Centre, with all 31 recommendations accepted to improve transparency, safety, and trust in NSW corrective services.
builders welcome rates cut with caution
MASTER Builders Australia welcomes the RBA’s interest rate cut but stresses the need for Federal Government action on housing and cost-of-living challenges. While lower rates provide relief, core issues like land shortages, planning delays, workforce constraints, and rising construction costs remain. With construction costs up 40% in five years and build times extended by 80% over 15 years, urgent reforms are needed to streamline approvals and boost productivity.
koala Personality Quiz updated
THE Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) has updated its Koala Personality Quiz, adding new Koalas from its Adopt a Koala program. The fun, interactive quiz helps participants discover their Koala match while learning about conservation. With engaging prompts and interactive elements, AKF aims to boost awareness and encourage Koala adoptions. Available now on their website, users can share results on social media to spread the conservation message.
Warning over cashless gambling
THE NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) welcomes the NSW Government’s gambling reform consultation papers but stresses that mandatory cashless gaming remains the most effective harm-minimization tool. The papers propose facial recognition technology and a third-party exclusion register to help problem gamblers. While NCOSS supports these measures, CEO Cara Varian urges a statewide exclusion register and calls on the government to implement mandatory cashless gaming as recommended by experts.
Tasmania the healthiest place to live
AMONASH University study has ranked Tasmania and Hobart as Australia’s healthiest places to live, while Darwin and the Northern Territory ranked the unhealthiest. The Environmental Quality Health Index (EQHI) assesses air quality, green spaces, climate, and socioeconomic factors to measure health risks. Coastal regions generally scored higher than inland areas. The study highlights the need for targeted improvements in lower-scoring regions to reduce health risks and promote wellbeing across Australia.

LOCAL BUSINESS AWARDS NOMINATIONS CLOSE SOON
Vote for your favourite business
TIME is running out to nominate outstanding businesses in the 2025 Blacktown City Local Business Awards, with voting closing on Tuesday, March 11. Nominating a business that offers exceptional service or products is a great way for customers and clients to show their appreciation for the efforts of business owners and their staff.
Precedent Productions Managing Director and Local Business Awards Founder, Steve Lowe, said one of the best ways customers could show their gratitude for exceptional service and products was to nominate their favourite business for a Blacktown City Local Business Award.
“We all say thank you after we’ve been served in a shop or other business,” he said, however, “nominating a business that offers outstanding service is a way of thanking those people in a tangible way that can make a very big difference to their lives”.
“Numerous times over the years, we’ve been told by Local Business Awards nominees how much it has meant to them that customers or clients have made the effort to reward their efforts by nominating them.”
“Being a Local Business Awards Finalist or Winner also brings the benefits of publicity and additional business, as people have told us that they view a Finalist certificate or Winner’s trophy as a sign that they will receive exceptional goods or services there.”
Mr. Lowe said a huge number of nominations had already been received, especially online, through the Precedent Productions website.
“The Blacktown City community has enormous respect for its local businesses”, he said.
“Every Finalist in the Local Business Awards receives a certificate, and category Winners, announced at the Presentation Evening, receive a trophy.”
“These certificates and trophies are always displayed with great pride in shops and offices, and business people have told me that customers and clients are impressed to know that they are dealing with an award-winning business.”
The Awards are only possible thanks to the support of: Presenting Partner: Commonwealth Bank, Major Partners: Blacktown City Council, NOVA Employment, Blacktown Workers Club, and Westpoint Blacktown, and Support Partners: Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, Seven Hills Plaza, White Key Marketing, and Kings Langley Shopping Centre.

Message from the Mayor Councillor Brad Bunting
Blacktown City Council is proud to be a major sponsor of the Blacktown City and Mount Druitt St Marys Local Business Awards.
Blacktown is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, with our current population of over 435,000 forecast to grow to over 600,000 residents within 20 years.
Our economy is over $24 billion and based on the trading activity of over 30,000 local businesses.
During these challenging times, we known that it is particularly important for our Council to support local businesses who are the backbone of our economy.
The Local Business Awards is an opportunity for our community to come together and acknowledge the great work our local businesses are doing in providing jobs, goods and services to support our City’s people.
I am proud to recognise that several Council businesses are regularly nominated as finalists in their award categories.
Congratulations to all winners and finalists in the Awards!

HOARDING IMPACTS SO MANY LIVES
But there is expert help at hand
HOARDING Disorder (HD) and Severe Domestic Squalor (SDS) are complex mental health conditions, impacting approximately seven percent of the Australian population.
However, hoarding and squalor are much more than just living in a messy home
Hoarding impacts every part of someone’s life, including their health, finances, ability to use the rooms in their home for their intended use. It increases health costs, cleanup costs and council costs.
Hoarding consists of two primary criteria: the inability to let go of items that congest, and clutter active living areas and the level of distress associated with letting go of items.
Hoarding is a secretive disorder because they are scared if they are identified as living in an unsafe and unhealthy environment, they are at risk of homelessness and if there are children in the home, that children may be removed due to the environment.
Hoarding not only impacts the person who is the hoarder. It impacts others who may live in the home. This includes children and the elderly. If there are not appropriate supports provided, we will see an increase in intergenerational hoarding.
It is not about simply telling someone to stop it and
clean it up. Hoarding is a form of crisis and without support, they will not be able to make any long-term sustainable change and in fact, it will get worse.
So what is ‘appropriate support’.
It is important to remember that this is a complex mental health condition, and it is psychological, emotional and behavioural and we need
to support the person across all three areas.
Appropriate funding does not mean a skip bin and throwing everything into it. It means providing a therapy-based intervention model that addresses not only these areas but also demands the restoration of the functionality, health and safety of the home, reduce the risk of tenancy loss increasing people becoming
homelessness and of children being removed, resulting in family breakdown.
Unfortunately, the statistics keep increasing and people continue to fall through the cracks of service provision. The NDIS who provide funding for people with psychosocial disability, refuses to acknowledge it as a psychosocial disability. In fact, their response is getting a cleaner in.
How do you do that when the home is so cluttered, that there is no room to move things and provide a clean. Wiping down a bench is not what they require. They require more and deserve more.
Providing appropriate supports is costly and although the stats are currently 7%, Inside Out Recovery believes we are possibly closer to 10% and without funding, we are heading for an epidemic.
This cohort heeds funding. PLEASE, the NDIS, recognise it as a psychosocial disability and provide a hoarding and squalor line item so people can access the help they need. Hoarding promotes isolation and disconnection and if we want to ensure people can live their best life and achieve their dreams, they need funding.
Inside Out Recovery’s (IOR) team of highly specialised staff understand the complexity of hoarding or simply the
overwhelming task of sorting and discarding. We provide an individual support plan to meet the recovery goals of each individual. We work with you to build your capacity for change and achieve recovery to live a life less cluttered.
IOR provides a wraparound model of support that meets your individual goals, through:
• Counselling.
• Psychosocial Declutter Coaching.
• Recovery Coaching.
• Individualised Support.
• Support groups and training.
• Professional Development sector support training.
IOR is a registered NDIS provider whose director is Professional Counsellor Deb Graham, winner of The Most Outstanding Addiction Behaviour Counsellor in Australia in the NSW Enablement Awards in 2022 2023 and 2024.
Deb also won The Most Outstanding Addiction Behaviour Counsellor in the World in the Global Enablement Awards in November 2022.

ON TRACK BUT THERE’S MORE TO DO Interest rates cuts the start
MICHELLE ROWLAND
RECENTLY, the Reserve Bank announced it would reduce interest rates, a welcome firststep for families across NorthWest Sydney who are among the highest rates of household mortgage holders in Australia.
One interest rate cut will not fix the cost-of-living pressures felt by local residents, however, the worst of the inflation challenges are now behind us.
When the Coalition left office, inflation was higher and rising. Under Labor, inflation is almost a third of what it was, and falling.
1.1 million new jobs have been created since May 2022 – the lowest average unemployment rate for any government in half a century.
Critically, real wages are increasing after a decade of being supressed. This is affirmation of an economy that is improving.
Indeed, helping Australians find work and delivering higher wages is one of the best supports for households under pressure.
I know progress in national numbers doesn’t translate into
lived experience, that’s why I am intent on ensuring our plan for the future improves quality of life, liveability, and is focused on people.
As the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, has said: there’s much more to do.
This includes areas of housing affordability, bulk-billing, and en-
suring supermarkets treat customers fairly on grocery pricing.
The reality is the biggest risk to household budgets and the economy is Peter Dutton.
A household with two average full-time workers would have been around $7,200 worse off under Mr Dutton, based on his opposition to
wage increases, tax cuts and energy bill relief alone.
The Coalition has also opposed energy relief and say they will end Free TAFE.
Mr Dutton would risk the economy by spending $600B of taxpayers’ money on nuclear reactors, without explaining what cuts the Coalition would make to pay for this.
This would have the effect of not only increasing energy prices, but reducing essential services, leaving the North-West worse off.
In contrast, Labor is focused on building the future with positive policies that invest in infrastructure and expand health services, rather than policies that cut.
By working together, and with the right policies, we can build a better future for all.

Discover the fun of watercraftpersonal
ISTARTED as the ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ of the group. Having just turned 50 and never having been at the controls of a boat or a PWC (personal watercraft) in my life, I was going to keep things pretty conservative.
With a few simple instructions on how to safely enjoy the latest Sea-Doo Personal Watercraft, such as maintain a safe distance because there are no brakes and wear a lifejacket, but then it was like, hang on, this is fun.
I was feeling the thrill of excitement the faster I went. They said in the safety
briefing, it’s easier to turn once you have a bit of speed. Reaching speeds of up to 70km per hour, faster than the limit on most roads, I started weaving my turns with greater accuracy and precision.
This is an adventure in our own backyard. Just 30 minutes from Sydney exploring our wonderful waterways, I became quickly addicted to this new leisure pursuit. Who wouldn’t be?
“Believe me my young friend, there is NOTHING, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” (Wind in the Willows).
LIFE Sydney Aquarium and the Australian National Maritime Museum, ensuring there’s no shortage of adventure to be had.
Offer Inclusions:
• Overnight accommodation.
• Daily buffet breakfast at BARKERS Restaurant (kids eat free!.)
• A cozy in-room teepee for your little explorers.
• Explorer Pack including binoculars, disposable camera and an Explore Local map curated by our PARKROYAL Local.
• Kid-friendly welcome amenity.
Room rates start from $w290 per night. Offer is valid for stays between 11th April - 30th April 2025.
Finally, this made sense to me. As we darted along the Hawkesbury River, under bridges, over wakes, watching for the ebbs and flows and stopping to take in the amazing waterfall and the
shipwreck of the HMAS Parramatta, we were adventuring to places only reachable by water, with the sound of cicadas as our cheer-squad.
Jet Ski Safaris NSW at Brooklyn is offering a number of fun days out onboard Sea-Doo personal watercraft, at an affordable and accessible entry point for enthusiasts of all levels. With Jet Ski Safaris, you don’t even need to have your boat or PWC license to get started.
Who does a Jet Ski Safari suit?
As we cruised back to the Brooklyn Marina for lunch, I was already planning my return. First to bring my kids, maybe an extended family day out, but also how much fun would a ladies’ morning out zipping around the water, followed by lunch be?
Australia has some of the best waterways in the world and boating is a great way to experience the great outdoors whether it is by PWC, power boat, sailing boat or paddle craft. This summer why not get out on the water with family or friends and soak up the vast health benefits, recharge the batteries and create lasting memories.

NEW LUXURY VILLAS IN THE Coastal town of Bingin in Bali
IF you’re seeking the perfect blend of luxury, intimacy, and proximity to one of Bali’s most striking areas, look no further than Mazari Villas.
Located on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, this clever find offers a tranquil retreat that’s still within reach of the island’s best beaches, vibrant nightlife, yoga studios, popular restaurants, and elevated boho fashion spots. Set in a rapidly developing area, this is a great time to visit before prices rise and adjacent new high-end developments take shape.
First impressions
From the moment we arrived, we were completely enchanted by the stunning cliffside vistas and sparkling views of nearby beaches such as Uluwatu, Dreamtime and Ngang Ngang. Mazari Villas is just 50 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, making it convenient without sacrificing the exclusivity of its location.
As we neared the villa, our driver snaked through winding, secluded streets, lined with lush tropical gardens. This only heightened our anticipation of arriving at a luxurious, up-and-coming enclave that promises to be the next must visit Bali destination.
When we arrived at Mazari Villas, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism by our Villa Butler, Adhi, whose impeccable service immediately set the tone for our stay. Available 24/7 via WhatsApp, Adhi was quick to offer recommendations, arrange transport, and cater to any special requests. We were treated to a thorough villa tour with a refreshing arrival drink, and could immediately see why Mazari Villas is on the cusp of discovery for Bali lovers.
The villa itself was a modern
mansion, inspired by the crisp, whitewashed feel of Santorini. The open-air design featured pristine white walls, complemented by an aquamarine Mediterranean-style in-villa pool that was all ours. A cosmopolitan layout, with furnishings and artwork chosen to enhance the serene and inviting atmosphere.
Villas and In-villa services
We were fortunate to spend two nights in the Iona Villa, a two-bedroom residence that felt like our own magical escape. The villa was spacious with large floor to ceiling windows that allowed natural light to cascade throughout. One of the highlights was the sunken living room, which created
a cozy and intimate mood. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the area or lounging by the pool.
We also enjoyed the new smart TV, which offered plenty of entertainment options for a quiet night in.
The villa also came equipped with a curated ‘Uluwatu Essentials’ and ‘Curated Experiences’ guides, thoughtfully put together by our Villa Butler. This guide not only included recommendations for local restaurants, but also insights into the best spas, beaches, and the most scenic sunset spots. Whether a local surf lesson, fishing trip or bespoke art and craft workshop takes your fancy, Mazari will effortlessly cater to your needs.
Dining and food options
One of the best aspects of staying at Mazari Villas was the freedom to indulge in a variety of dining options without having to leave the property. While the villa’s kitchen was fully equipped and operational for cooking up a feast, we opted to take advantage of Bali’s thriving delivery culture. With apps like Gojek and Grab, it was easy to have delicious, local meals delivered straight to our door, often within 30 minutes.
The team provides a well-edited list of the best eateries in the area, making it simple to explore local cuisine. We enjoyed dinner by the pool, sipping California wine while sampling a range of Balinese dishes, from international to Indonesian favourites.
Surrounding areas
A fun and unexpected find just around the corner was Fleur Caf?, offering fresh coffee and pastries in a laidback atmosphere, making it a favourite among the global nomad crowd. I loved the sketch books and reflection cards in this cute cafe, encouraging patrons to express themselves or have a moment of quiet reflection over their morning brew before heading out to explore. The area around Mazari Villas is home to some of Bali’s best dining spots, offering everything from casual cafes to luxe dining experiences. The proximity to Bingin Beach and Uluwatu’s main drag meant that we could easily grab a scooter or arrange a quick ride for a night out.
For a full day of relaxation, Sundays Beach Club is the perfect option. Just 20 minutes from the villas, it features a stunning beachfront location that offers a range of activities, from swimming and reading a book under a private cabana, to enjoying a cocktail and snack by the water. Walk-ins are welcome but Sundays also offer a VIP pack with towels, welcome hamper and a food and beverage credit for your day.
Sunset at Sundays is magic with a saxophone performance and beach bonfires shifting the venue into nightlife mode. The Balinese gods thankfully got us to the airport on time, and we cheekily boarded our flight.

GWS FURY LAUNCHES ITS 10TH SEASON OF THE Netball NSW Premier League competition
AS the Blacktown City Netball Association (BCNA) prepares for their 2025 Winter Season, the highlight of the month was the Season Launch for GWS Fury (Fury) held at Hudson Hotel in Seven Hills. Fury is proudly owned and operated by BCNA.
Fury will enter its 10th season in the NNSW Premier League competition with a new look for their uniform items which incorporates the ringtail swirls, clearly aligning them to BCNA.
In 2025, Fury welcomes four new players to the Opens team and six new players to the 23&Under team. These players fought hard for their position through a very competitive selection process held in November. The teams are well supported by experienced coaching and support staff along with a strong administration team.
During the night, the attendees heard from several people including Councillor Julie Griffiths AM representing Blacktown City Council. Councillor Griffiths is a long-term supporter of BCNA and Fury and encouraged the players to take on the chal-
lenge, work hard and enjoy themselves.
And Alison Sheppard, the operating manager for Fury reminded the players of the club’s values; focus, empathy, adaptability and trust and encouraged everyone to strive to uphold these values
in every game, every training session, and every interaction they have with others.
At the launch we took the opportunity to present the playing group with their playing dresses for 2025. These were received with excitement and pride and were presented by Blacktown City junior players from Eastern Creek Pioneers, Wenty Leagues, Waratahs and the rep squad.
Additionally, the Leadership Group for 2025 was announced. Congratulations to Robyn Towson and Eve Vaitusi, Captain and Vice Captain respectively for the 23&U team and Luana Aukafolau and Manaia Meta, Captain and Vice Captain respectively for the Opens team. These ladies have been chosen for their leadership skills both on and off the court.
They will be strong leaders within their teams leading by example at every
Blacktown Downs Apia in a thriller
BOB TURNER
ALATE Danny Choi stunner secured all three points for Blacktown City for their first home win of the 2025 NSW Premier League season at Landen Stadium after they took down APIA Leichhardt FC 4-3 last Sunday.
APIA started off strong with their attackers holding possession early on, but it was Blacktown who produced the first chance of the game. Jakob Cresnar had a nice break from his defenders on the sideline and sent off a cross but overshot the run of Jak O’Brien. Jak O’Brien then had a perfect opportunity for a tap in off a beautiful Mitch Mallia cross but it went the wrong side of the bar for a goal kick. Blacktown’s pressure finally paid off with a great team goal, with Jak O’Brien offloading to Mitch Mallia, who’s cross to Keanu Moore netted the first goal of the match and his first goal in Blacktown City colours. Although Blacktown held the momentum, APIA was definitely not letting the goal get to them. They got themselves on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute as a scrappy build-up in the box resulted in the ball falling perfectly for Cameron Fong, who blasted it into the back of the net to level the scores. The scores were not level for long as Blacktown put themselves back ahead just before the break. A hard challenge on O’Brien from Themba Muata-Marlow set up a free kick just right of the box, which Mitch Mallia brilliantly sent into the top corner to the absolute delight of the Blacktown fans, taking a 2-1 lead into half time. Blacktown wasted no time as they came back from the sheds as O’Brien was gifted with a great pass right in front of goal to easily slip into goal for a 3-1 advantage just seconds after the restart. Despite the 3-1
disadvantage, APIA never looked out of the contest.
The pressure on the Blacktown defence paid off in the 53rd minute as Presley Ortiz found an opening and struck it past the keeper to reduce the deficit to one. APIA maintained their momentum and a near miss from Segreto eventually led to a stunning, score-levelling strike from Ortiz for his second of the game and fifth of the season.
With 10 minutes to go in regulation and even pressure from both teams, it looked likely to end in a draw. However a triple substitution from City coach Mark Crittenden placed a fresh Danny Choi on the pitch, who capitalised on a great cross from Nick O’Brien to send the ball into the back of the net and once again hand Blacktown the lead with minutes remaining.
Coach Crittenden said the result should not have been that close. “We were really poor defensively. To concede three times at home is really disappointing, and the way we conceded defensively is just not good enough for us. The result is good, but still plenty of work to do”, said Coach Crittenden.
Blacktown City Men go on the road on Saturday, March 8, at 7:15pm to take on St George City at Penshurst Park. Catch all the action live on NPL.TV. Blacktown will be back home at Landen Stadium on Sunday, the 16th for a classic duel with Sydney Olympic. Game time is 3pm.
Blacktown City Women opened their 2025 campaign against one of the leading teams in the competition, Inter Lions. Playing away from home they fought stiff opposition from their hosts who were determined to open their season with a win. In the end, the young Blacktown side were unable to match their opponents, going down 2-0.
