COAST’S GREEN CREDENTIALS SHINE Tourism on the world stage
ALISON ADAMSTHE Central Coast won first place in the global Green Destinations Story Awards at leading travel trade show, ITB Berlin, earlier this month.
The annual awards are presented to the most inspiring sustainable tourism initiatives submitted across six categories, with the Central Coast receiving the top accolade in the Destination Management category.
The NSW Central Coast was the only Australian certified ECO Destination recognised on the international stage this year.
Central Coast Council’s CEO David Farmer said winning the competition confirms the region as a world leader in sustainable tourism.
He said such recognition on the international stage represented the undeniable progress they have made growing ecotourism since 2021.
“Taking home this award is testament not only to the council’s ability to lead tourism management for the region, but to the commitment from our local industry who are taking up the mantle and leading with sustainability in their tourism offerings,” Mr Farmer said.
The 2024 Green Destinations Story Awards official ceremony showcased a di-
verse range of good practice stories from tourism destinations around the world.
Central Coast Council’s winning Sustainability Story submission focused on the region’s commitment to building an ecotourism community known as Eco Advocates.
Their entry titled “A Destination of Eco Advocates with Whales, Alpacas and Wheels” received high praise from the judges.
Chief Executive of Ecotourism Australia Elissa Keenan congratulated Central Coast Council for taking out first place at the world’s most prestigious sustainable destination awards ceremony.
“The council has worked tirelessly
over many years to achieve ongoing global best-practice sustainable destination standards and support their local tourism industry on their own sustainability journey with Ecotourism Australia’s Certifications and Programs,” Ms Keenan said.
“Their winning story is a testament to the whole region’s commitment to sustainability and is an inspirational model for other Australian and international destinations to grow sustainability from the ground up.
Central Coast administrator Rik Hart said the win highlighted the council’s support for the tourism sector.
“Our investment is being reflected in visitor numbers,” he said.
“For the year ending June 2023 - in comparison to June 2022 - total domestic visitor numbers have increased by 52.3 per cent with 5,946,000 domestic visitors to the Central Coast.
“Council’s destination marketing and management initiatives have also resulted in winning accolades and major awards over the last few years, including this current global win.
“But equally significantly, the council’s support has also helped grow local business, economic growth and jobs in the sector.
“I want to congratulate everyone involved in helping achieve this outstanding global award,” Mr Hart said.
The Central Coast has been a consistent finalist in the Top 100 Sustainability Stories competition for the last three years, recognising the region’s ongoing commitment to sustainable destination management best practice led by Central Coast Council, in partnership with the local tourism industry.
The Central Coast became Australia’s third certified ECO Destination in 2022, as part of a commitment to grow sustainable tourism practices in destination management and promote world-class nature-based experiences.

HOW BONNIE BROUGHT THE JOY Best friend Sienna forever grateful
ELIZABETH FRIASNINE-year-old Avoca Beach Public School student Bonnie Hurrell has a huge heart, shaving her long locks for seriously ill best friend Sienna.
“No one knows how long she will be in the hospital for. Just imagine not seeing your family or your pets every day,” Bonnie said.
Sienna, 10, has been diagnosed with leukemia and after seeing the World’s Greatest Shave advertisement on TV one night while watching a movie with family, Bonnie begged mum Joanne to sign her up.
At school on Friday, March 15, in front of her family and friends, while Sienna watched on Facetime, a friend shaved Bonnie’s hair raising an initial $1,000 that recently ballooned to over $25,000.
Bonnie’s fundraiser for Sienna on behalf of the Leukemia Foundation is now ranked sixth in the Top 10 Highest Fundraisers from among 4,566 participants in NSW and 14,804 across
pool totalled $9.3 million as of this week.
The foundation holds The World’s Greatest Shave fundraising event every year to assist more than 140,000 Australians facing blood cancer right now.
The foundation said Bonnie is their youngest benevolent participant helping them provide practical and emo-
hits $15,000, thus her parents, other family members and school staff shaved theirs as well.
Residents joined Bonnie’s fundraiser for Sienna, some donating their long tresses to make wigs for those with cancer and had lost their hair from bouts of chemotherapy treatments.
Sienna’s mother sent a message which said: “Bonnie’s shave day was
her family to attend their game and go on the pitch to help form the guard of honour.
“Bonnie is now walking confidently with her short hair and not once has said she wishes she had long hair,” Mrs Hurrell said.
“She is just so proud of herself and has a huge amount of love and admiration for her brave friend Sienna.”
FUNDING A BOOST TO BOARD RIDERS Surf’s up for Avoca youth
ALSION ADAMSYOUNG surfers will benefit from a $10,000 State Government grant to North Avoca Boardriders which aims to encourage participation at a grassroots level.
Club president Dave Lynam said the funding would enable them to buy more equipment and organise extra training days.
“This will help our young members to gain more surfing skills and help keep them excited about the benefits of the sport,” he said.
Dave said the youth development program was important because it “keeps the kids keen on surfing”.
“Surfing is an almost-free easily available sport that provides kids with a healthy fun activity at their doorstep,” he said.
“The coast has a rich history in surfing and this type of program represents good value for the government.”
North Avoca Boardriders was formed in 2016 and has an average of 120 members ranging from five to 60.
Dave said the club offers the local surfing community a chance to get to-
gether for a friendly social competition at the end of each month.
“We have 10 social comps per year, along with a presentation night, a camping weekend away and a
fund-raising golf day.
“Most of our other funding normally comes from the local tradies or through the help of our local general store.”
The funding was announced as part of the Minns Labor Government’s Local Small Commitments Allocation Program.
The program aims to enhance local communities and provide $400,000 in benefits to people in each of the 93 NSW electorates.
It consists of more than 600 small community projects, ranging from capital works, services and programs to events, supplies, and equipment as well as charitable donations and park upgrades.
Member for the Entrance David Mehan said the funding underscores the government’s commitment to empowering local communities and enhancing the lives of residents.
“With this support, the North Avoca Boardriders can further strengthen their programs and initiatives, contributing to the positive growth of the area and creating a better environ-
ment for our youth to thrive,” he said.
“This is a fantastic outcome for the North Avoca Boardriders and the people of the Terrigal electorate. This support is instrumental in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among the youth in our community.”
Duty MLC for Terrigal Mark Buttigieg said: “Surfing is not only good exercise and a buzz - but also a strong point of connection in local communities.
“The North Avoca Boardriders Youth Development Program funding will further engage young people in the local surfing community.
“Participants couldn’t be luckier: North Avoca is one of the most beautiful beaches in the state.”
The NSW Government has committed funds to the program which will help small local projects and programs that strengthen communities and provide improvements at a local level.

DISABILITY CAMPAIGNERS WANT BEACH ACCESS Avoca Beach the launchpad
ELIZABETH FRIASTHE Central Coast has become the launching pad of a nationwide campaign by Accessible Beaches Australia (ABA) seeking a range of disability mobility facilities to the most scenic coastlines.
According to ABA, less than two percent of Australia’s 12,000 popular beaches managed by Councils and state governments (41 are on the Central Coast) have access for people in wheelchairs, even worse for the elderly and those with severe mobility problems.
“Unfortunately, we exclude so many people as beaches in Australia are not accessible to people with disabilities, due to a lack of facilities such as ramps, matting, and accessible toilets,” founder and ABA chair Shane Hryhorec said.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy the sand, sun, and surf it’s a fundamental part of this country, this culture, this summer lifestyle.”
The ABA recently unveiled its campaign at Avoca Beach rolling out a petition signed by its supporters led by two prominent campaigners, lawyer and academic Jane Spring OAM and NSW Rowing Club’s Murray Clarke OAM.
They are urging the government to follow Greece’s example which they
said opened 387 beaches accessible to people with disabilities.
Mr Hryhorec said Greece’s move unlocked an untapped tourism market and Australia’s beachside communities such as the Central Coast with its quintessential attractions to local and international visitors could benefit from it.
“Beach mats, typically long blue rollout mats, make a huge difference for
people with disabilities accessing the beach,” said Ms Spring who frequents Avoca Beach in a wheelchair.
A car accident left Ms Spring dependent on her wheelchair and to go for swim and she needs to piggyback on her husband, Mr Clarke who is a University of New South Wales academic and rowing team head coach.
Ms Spring and Mr Clarke are recip-
ients of the Order of Australia Medal in King Charles’ inaugural Birthday Honour List last year for their advocacy to sport and disability services. Both are now lifetime members of the NSW Rowing Club.
“The first time I used the mat at Avoca Beach I was absolutely delighted to be rolled down the mat by my husband,” Ms Spring said.
“The beach wheelchair is not something that you can use independently. You need someone to push it.
“Avoca Beach is a fantastic beach for people with disabilities as the southern corner is generally sheltered when seas are small.
“Killcare also has a beach wheelchair and an accessible change room with a shower. The beach is far more exposed, but I would love to swim there on a calm day.”
Ms Spring said they have often requested Avoca Beach Surf Life Saving Club to roll out the mats to help people with disabilities and elderly people access the beach.
The ABA campaigners are also seeking for secured toilet facilities with shower area for people with disabilities.

Half admit emotional baggage
NEW research by eharmony highlights the impact of past relationships on future love lives. Almost half of respondents admit to carrying emotional baggage, with anger issues and addiction cited as the most troublesome. Despite this, many aim to learn from past mistakes to improve future relationships. However, there’s a paradox: while individuals acknowledge their own baggage, they may judge potential partners harshly for theirs, revealing complexities in navigating emotional baggage in relationships.
New Bill for community workers’ rights
THE NSW Government has unveiled a draft bill to extend leave rights for up to 250,000 community sector workers, allowing quicker access to long service leave and portability across multiple employers. Targeting disability care, domestic violence, and homelessness services, the reform aims to address job insecurity and retain essential workers. The scheme, mirroring other jurisdictions, responds to the sector’s high casualization and predominantly female workforce, aligning with the Government’s commitment to support social service workers.
Pharmacy trial proves successful
THE NSW Government’s pharmacy trial has exceeded 12,000 consultations, easing GP burden and enhancing medication access. Trained pharmacists manage UTIs and provide oral contraceptives, with over 11,000 UTI consultations and 854 pill consultations since May and September 2023, respectively. The trial expands to include treatments for minor skin conditions. Minister Ryan Park emphasizes the initiative’s efficiency and safety, aiming for further expansion to improve healthcare accessibility.
Mathematics won’t be mandated
THE Independent Education Union of Australia applauds NSW Education Standards Authority’s decision not to mandate mathematics for Years 11 and 12 students. With teacher shortages at peak levels, the move is considered pragmatic. Compulsory math would exacerbate the deficit in STEM educators, reducing subject choices and hindering student enrolment in non-government schools. The IEU advocates for en-
hanced professional development for primary teachers to bolster mathematics education.
Experts recommend using mouthguards
AS the 2024 rugby and football seasons approach, parents and athletes are urged to prioritize oral health. Shockingly, only 36% of Australians wear mouthguards during

Scontact sports, increasing the risk of severe injuries like fractured teeth and broken jaws. Dr Cathryn Madden emphasizes the importance of custom-fitted mouthguards from dentists to ensure proper protection, comfort, and prevention of injuries. Bupa Health Insurance members can access no-gap mouthguards at participating clinics, promoting safer sports participation.
INCE March 2023, NSW’s planned surgery waitlist has dropped by 85%, thanks to the Surgical Care Governance Taskforce and dedicated health staff. Over 12,000 fewer people await overdue procedures, with 83.6% of surgeries performed on time. Measures like expanding same-day surgery eligibility and boosting healthcare workforce help alleviate pressure on hospitals. Premier Chris Minns commends progress but acknowledges ongoing efforts to ensure prompt healthcare delivery.

Benefits through payment boost
CENTRAL Coast pensioners, those on Youth Allowance, JobSeeker and other social security payments will receive a boost through indexation.
From today, recipients of Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment will receive an increase of $19.60 a fortnight for singles and $29.40 a fortnight for couples combined.
Including Pension Supplement and Energy Supplement, the maximum rate of pension will be $1,116.30 a fortnight for singles, and $1,682.80 a fortnight for couples.
Commonwealth Rent Assistance, JobSeeker, Parenting Payment Single and ABSTUDY will also all be indexed.
Indexation on March 20 will see the single, without child rate of JobSeeker Payment and ABSTUDY (aged 22 and over) increase by $13.50 per fortnight, bringing the total fortnightly payment to $771.50, including Energy Supplement.
As a result of the $40 increase to working age and student payments announced in the 202324 Budget, together with indexation, the single, without child rate of JobSeeker Payment has increased in nominal terms by $120 per fortnight, or 18.7 per cent, since Labor came to Government.
Each member of a couple on JobSeeker Payment, ABSTUDY (aged 22 and over) or Parenting Payment Partnered will benefit from an additional $12.30 per fortnight, with the fortnightly rate increasing to $706.20, including Energy Supplement.
Parenting Payment Single recipients will also see an additional $17.50 a fortnight because of indexation, bringing their total fortnightly payment to $1,006.50, including Pension Supplement, Pharmaceutical Allowance and Energy Supplement.
Emma McBride, Member for Dobell said: “People in our community are doing it tough and struggling with
the cost of living. The increase across these social security payments will benefit locals, providing them with more support when they need it”.
Coast locals prepare for 3G switchover
AUSTRALAIN 3G networks are being switched over this year and this will impact different devices in different ways.
There are devices which rely solely on 3G, including 3G-only handsets, some Eftpos machines and medical alarms.
3G-only handsets won’t be able to make any calls after the switchover, and that will be apparent to users. However, there’s also a subset of 4G handsets which use 4G for voice and data but are configured by the manufacturer to use 3G for Triple Zero calls.
This category of handset is of more concern because it won’t be apparent to users their handset can’t call Triple Zero after the switch over; they would only discover this during an emergency.
Recent industry estimates indicate that up to 740,000 devices currently in the market will not be able to contact Triple Zero post-switchover, as a result of manufacturer’s device settings.
The Albanese Government takes this issue extremely seriously and will continue to monitor the switchovers and note that options exist in law, including potential proposals to delay planned 3G switchovers, if that is in the public interest, and subject to consultation processes.
Australians rightly expect the Triple Zero service can be relied on when they need it. It’s one of the most critical public interest requirements for mobile carriers.
Telecommunications should enrich peoples’ lives and support public safety.
That’s why we are investing over
$2.2B to strengthen our networks, including mobile network resilience and much needed technology upgrades to the NBN – enabling speed boosts and helping ensure Australians get more for what they pay on their telco bills.
The government recently announced it was standing up a Working Group with all three telcos and the industry’s peak body to improve communications, reporting information, and advice to customers.
The Working Group will provide its first report this month, and then report on a fortnightly basis.
To find out if your device is impacted, consumers are encouraged to contact their provider.

Michelle Rowland, Minister for Communications said: While the Government supports the safe switchover from 3G, it is important Australians are aware that some devices in the mobile market are not appropriately configured to contact emergency services on the 4G network.
“This new Working Group will ensure industry better coordinates efforts to identify and contact impacted customers, improves the accessibility of public-facing information and contact points, and provide regular advice to Government on the number of potentially affected devices and customers in the market.”
Emma McBride, Member for Dobell said: “The Central Coast is home to many older people with basic phones that they only use in emergencies situations. Supporting access to Triple Zero is critical for these people.
“Our government understands that telecommunications services are vital, and we are making it a priority to keep Australians safe, connected, and informed.
“It is critical that telcos communicate clearly with customers ahead of the planned 3G switchover, particularly with more vulnerable Australians and regional communities like ours.”
Delivering for aged care workers
SINCE coming to office, the Albanese Labor Government has shown that it values aged care workers.
We have delivered a record 15 percent pay increase for 250,000 of the lowest paid aged care workers across Australia.
The biggest ever pay rise for aged care workers has benefited workers across the Coast and reflects the intent of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s final report to improve remuneration for aged care staff.
Registered nurses, enrolled nurses, assistants in nursing, personal care workers, head chefs and cooks, recreational activities officers (lifestyle workers) and home care workers will see an historic increase to their award wages.
In March, the historic ‘Work Values
Case’ saw the Fair Work Commission deliver a significant pay rise of up to 28%, with an average increase of 23% across the sector.
The Albanese Labor Government is now working with the sector to develop and legislate a new Aged Care Act.
At the forefront of the campaign for better wages and conditions in aged care has been the Health Service Union (HSU) and their dedicated members.
Assistant Minister Emma McBride met with aged care workers in Canberra to recognise their advocacy. But also, to thank them for the tireless work they do to support older people on the Central Coast.
Emma McBride MP, Member for Dobell: “As a pharmacist who worked at Wyong Hospital for almost a decade, I know how important the work of aged care workers is, and for too long it has been undervalued.
“On the Central Coast we have an ageing population. It’s important that we have a strong aged care sector that people can rely on, and key to that is decent pay and conditions for workers.
“I’m proud to be part of a government that is delivering significant wage rises and better conditions for aged care workers. Creating a better sector for workers, residents, and their families.”
Comments attributed to Gerard Hayes, HSU Secretary:
“Aged care workers are the lifeblood of the care economy and for too long the hundreds of thousands of women of this sector have been overlooked.”
“These wage increases recognise the proper value of aged care work and will be an important factor in attracting and retaining this critical workforce.
“The Federal Government was prepared to stand up for aged care workers, understanding the central role that the workforce plays in delivering dignified, respectful care to older Australians. This is a great outcome for everyone - for workers, older Australians and their families.”
New approach to engage young people
THE Albanese Government is ensuring young people have more opportunities to shape Australia’s future.
Minister for Youth Dr Anne Aly tosday launched Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make, at the Albanese Government’s first annual National Youth Forum.
Shaped by the Government’s Youth Steering Committee and informed by consultation with more than 4,600 young people from across Australia, Engage! sets out how young people will be able to have their say on issues and contribute to policies that impact them.
Through the National Youth Consultations young people provided direct advice on how they want to connect with government programs and services and how they would like to be involved in government decision-making.
Engage! incudes a range of actions that directly responds to this feedback. The actions include a new digital youth hub – a website with resources for young people to help them connect with government and access the information and support they need.
Additionally, the Government’s successful Youth Steering Committee and Youth Advisory Group programs will continue, and a National Youth Forum will be held each year – providing young people with
multiple opportunities to have their say on policy development.
Under Engage! the Government will also deliver two annual grant programs, helping First Nations young people and marginalised young people including those from rural, regional and remote communities, build their capacity to engage with government.
“Engage! will ensure young people are empowered, valued, and included in the development of policies and programs that impact them,” Dr Aly said.
“Through the National Youth Consultations we heard from thousands of young people who made it clear – young people want to be included in government decision-making.
“Engage! is our promise to young people right around Australia, you will be genuinely engaged and consulted and your important contributions will help shape government policies.
“While empowering young people to engage with government, we’ll also be improving the way government works with young people.
“We’re introducing a range of measures to ensure young people are being heard, and your opinions are making a difference.”
The Government’s first annual National Youth Forum is being held in Canberra today, bringing more than 110 young people together from across Australia
to design and present policy solutions on topics that matter to young people.
Engage! delivers on the Albanese Government’s election commitment to provide young people with strong and formalised engagement in government and policy making.
Building on work already under way, Engage! is an important step in restoring the trust young people have in government after a decade of being ignored by the Coalition.
Learn more about Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make at youth.gov.au. Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP said: “I welcome the news by the Federal Labor Government and Minister Aly about the launch of Engage! Consulting young people on the issues that are important to them will strengthen our communities and make our country and democracy stronger. I look forward to young people from the Central Coast taking part in this outstanding opportunity and encourage them to get in touch with my office for any support”, Dr Reid said.
Winning the battle against scammers
THE Federal Labor Government is working hard to protect Australians and people across the Central Coast as scam losses significantly fall as a result of our fight against scammers.
On Tuesday, the Assistant Treasurer released a new report by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) shows the Federal Labor Government’s plan to crackdown on scammers is working.
This will be welcome news for the people of the Central Coast who have no doubt experienced the persistent calls, texts, and social media accounts attempting to scam them out of money.
The National Anti-Scam Centre’s second quarterly report shows scam losses in October to December 2023 have almost halved compared to the
same period in 2022.
Before the Federal Labor Government came to office, Australians were losing over $3 billion a year to scams. Of particular concern, scam losses had doubled and doubled again in the space of 3 years.
That trend has now flipped, with scam losses from October to December 2023 reduced by 43% from the same quarter in 2022.
This comes after the Government implemented its election commitment to crack down on scammers by investing $86.5 million in last year’s Budget, which included establishing the National Anti-Scam Centre.
The National Anti-Scam Centre is a world leading partnership between government, law enforcement and the private sector that uses cutting edge
technology to disrupt scams before they reach consumers. The National Anti-Scam Centre also focusses on raising community awareness to help arm people with tips and tools to help protect them from scammers.
“The Federal Labor Government is acting decisively to protect Australians from scams and economic crime,” Dr Reeid said.
“Every day, scammers are ripping money out the pockets of hard-working Australians. The Government is fighting back.”
“If an offer seems too good to be true or suspicious, it probably is.
“In April, I look forward to hosting another anti-scams forum which will be located in Woy Woy, and open to anyone interested in arming themselves with knowledge to combat scammers.
Gosford Public School visits Parliament
GOSFORD Public School has visited Parliament House in Canberra to learn about the Australian Government and democracy.
Students gained insight into how government in Australia works and received the opportunity to meet with their Federal Member of Parliament, Dr Gordon Reid MP.
Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP said: “It was a pleasure meeting with students, teachers, and parents from Gosford Public School in Parliament House.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to answer questions students had about Parliament House, why Canberra was built, and how our government works in Australia.
“Students were also very inquisitive about my work practising medicine pro-bono at Wyong Hospital and how I balance my roles.
“Coming to Canberra is an amazing experience, which I am sure each student will create memories which they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
“I hope the rest of Gosford Public School’s visit to Canberra is an engaging, fun, and informative experience for the students”, Dr Reid said.

12 LONG, DISAPPOINTING MONTHS OF MINNS GOVERNMENT
Been broken promises all-round
ADAM CROUCHWELL, it has now been twelve long, disappointing months of the Minns Government and unfortunately for the Central Coast, there is still nothing that the Minns Labor Government can show for themselves except broken promises and wrong priorities.
While our four local Labor Members, David Harris, David Mehan, Liesl Tesch and Yasmin Catley eagerly line up to cut the ribbon for projects funded by the former Liberal-National Government such as the Woy Woy Ambulance Station, the upgrade of the Tuggerah Railway Station, the new University Campus at Gosford and the Norah Head Community Hall to name a few, they have delivered nothing themselves for the people of the Central Coast.
All we have seen cut after cut and broken promise after broken promise. Rather than call out Chris Minns for his cuts to cost-of-living vouchers such as the Active Kids vouchers, which saved families over $481M in costs, or call out the cuts to the Regional Seniors Travel Card which over 40,000 Central Coast seniors received, it is crystal clear they are more interested in enjoying the trappings of office.
This is despite this lot saying they would roll over this cost-of-living programs introduced by the former Liberal-National Government prior to the election and then going completely silent once in government.
Another classic example of the wrong priorities and broken promises of the Minns Government is their lie on free parking at Gosford Hospital for staff and visitors. Prior to the election, the then Labor Opposition jumped on the Liberal-National Government’s commitment to introducing free parking at regional and rural hospitals.
Mere months later after winning office, the Minister for the Central Coast admitted the Minns Labor Government would not introduce free parking for staff and visitors and
would re-introduce paid parking for staff at Gosford Hospital, which had been suspended by the former Liberal-National Government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Interestingly, in the Minister for the Central Coast’s own electorate, parking remains free for staff and visitors at Wyong Hospital – it really is a tale of two hospitals for the Central Coast.
While the local Labor Members are busy cutting ribbons to projects they opposed in Opposition but in Government welcome, the Liberals and Nationals are focused on putting policy forward to benefit the people of the Central Coast and NSW.
This included our Minerals Legislation Amendment, which forced the government to adopt our position to
ban seabed mining and introduce their own copy and paste legislation, which is now law in New South Wales.
Sooner or later the Minns Government need to wise up and get back to what they are supposed to do – govern. If the last twelve months are a reflection of what’s to come, all we’ll continue to see are more broken promises and wrong priorities for New South Wales.
An afternoon with trailblazing women in our community
As part of my role as Member for Terrigal, I get to meet so many amazing, strong and talented women in the community. Each year I hold an afternoon tea for the annual Terrigal Local Woman of the Year, and this year was no different with countless women nominated for the award.
All of this year’s nominees have made such an incredible contribution across so many different volunteer organisations in our region and I’m so proud to represent a community with so many outstanding women in it.
I am proud to announce for 2024, the Terrigal Local Woman of the Year is Louise Vangestel, the President of the Tarragal Outrigger Canoe Club.
Louise was instrumental in establishing the Tarragal Outrigger Canoe Club, which has a focus on supporting not just the community but local Indigenous youth in partnership with the Frank Baxter Youth Justice Centre and Bara Barang Corporation.
Her and the club’s vision is to recognise our local Indigenous peoples and to work to increase the social equity of Indigenous youth, specifically through their partnerships with these organi-
sations and Louise’s vision has brought about meaningful change to the community, melding cultures and removing barriers to anyone wanting to paddle.

SPECIAL 20-PAGE FEATURE
$50M RSL CHANGES COAST CLUBLAND Super community hub under one roof
ALISON ADAMSGOSFORD RSL’s landmark new clubhouse opened to the public last month following a $50M dollar development and two years of construction.
The three-storey “super club” houses a new dining precinct with five diverse culinary offerings, recreational spaces, a state-of-the-art conference and events centre, a sports bar, an onsite brewery and the RSL museum, all under one roof.
The project was the culmination of a collaborative partnership between the club, local contractor North Construction & Building, WMK Architecture and The APP Group.
Positioned at the north end of the existing West Gosford site, the impressive new building overlooks the Central Coast Highway, marking the gateway to Gosford and the Central Coast.
The unveiling of the new building heralds a transformative chapter for the historic RSL club, underlining its commitment to the local community while bolstering the region’s advancement and prosperity with a forward-thinking approach.
With a legacy spanning more than six decades, Gosford RSL stands as a cornerstone of the community, boasting a robust membership of more than 25,000.
Founded in the aftermath of WWII by Ernest White, a respected local and former AIF Captain, the club’s humble beginnings in 1960 saw just 60 members pooling resources to establish its inaugural premises - a modest Ford garage with corrugated iron walls, a tarred floor and no ceiling.
In the years after the clubs’ inception, membership flourished, prompting the expansion of the club into adjacent properties.
When fire destroyed the clubhouse in 1973, a new venue was built on the
West Gosford site, where the club still stands today.
Over the years, ongoing upgrades and enhancements have been undertaken, including a significant $4.5 million renovation in 2006. Looking ahead, the club obtained approval to reconstruct on its existing site, with building beginning in May 2022 marking a new chapter in its history.
The meticulously designed new building will allow for easy refreshment, refurbishment and future alterations.
The ground floor offers a grand entrance experience with its impressive foyer servicing both the RSL and the adjoining motel, as well as a new RSL museum.
An initiative of the Gosford RSL Sub Branch, the museum commemorates the servicemen from the region and their contributions to Australia, spanning from the Boer War(s) to more recent conflicts.
On level one The Gardens offers a dynamic dining precinct and recreation hub. With a fluid layout encompassing a bar, lounge, café, multiple dining areas, kids’ play zone, and teenage retreat,
it provides a flexible and welcoming environment.
Diners can choose from five culinary adventures including modern Australian, Asian fusion, and Argentinian grill, alongside wood-fired pizzas and a café.
Helmed by executive chef Simon Quick the menus feature globally inspired signature dishes. Highlights include an Argentinian grill platter, Asian-inspired bar bites such as chilli wontons, steamed prawn gow gee and dim sum and club favourites like burgers, bangers and mash, chicken parmi and beef ragout bolognaise.
The wood-fired oven will churn out classic and inventive pizzas while the signature cocktails promise to be a highlight among the beverage offerings.
On level two patrons are treated to a range of experiences, from the electrifying sports ambience of The Grandstand sports bar to the sophisticated setting of The Gallery conference and events centre.
Overlooking the Gardens terrace below, the Gallery’s pre-function space provides a stunning backdrop for drink receptions, corporate break-out sessions, expos and more.
Also housed on level two is the Oak Haven Brewery. Born in 2018 out of a vision to offer exceptional brews at an affordable price, the brewery is a testament to the club’s commitment to providing fresh, high-quality beer for its patrons. Currently brewing six core ales and two feature ales, Oak Haven has achieved significant recognition, most recently at the 2023 Australian International Beer Awards, securing two gold medals and two bronze medals.
The existing RSL Club, which remained operational throughout construction, will be demolished to establish an additional 154 car parking spaces.
The club will continue to support the Gosford RSL Sub Branch and is very proud of the heritage and history connected to the institution and the work that is done to assist and support Diggers past and present.
Club CEO Russel Cooper said they are proud to be a community-owned organisation dedicated to entertaining and supporting the local community.
“Our new building makes a bold statement at the gateway to the Central Coast, providing exceptional hospitality spaces and premier conference and events facilities to entertain both locals and visitors.
“This project has not only created hundreds of jobs and injected millions into the local economy, but also led to the hiring of more than 50 new staff members.
“We’re thrilled to unveil the new Gosford RSL Club, featuring the Gardens, the Grandstand, and the Gallery.
“While our building offers a wow factor and top-notch food and drinks, it’s our commitment to exceptional service that remains unchanged. The warm, personable, and professional service that defines Gosford RSL will continue to be our hallmark.”
Our name has changed but our commitment remains the same “Supporting our Veterans’ Families”.
Central Coast Legacy congratulates Gosford RSL on the new Club and we look forward to utilising their new event area “The Gallery” for our Beneficiaries functions into the future.

Gosford rSl opens $50M upgrade
TESTAMENT TO TALENTED COMMUNITY RSL a new standard of club excellence
AFTER two years of anticipation, the new Gosford RSL Club has opened its doors to the public, revealing a landmark new clubhouse that stands as a beacon of community and architectural excellence.
Designed by WMK Architecture and constructed by local award-winning contractor North Construction & Building, this $50 million redevelopment is the newest stand-out venue for the Central Coast.
The three-storey building, located on the north end of the existing West Gosford site, overlooks the Central Coast Highway, serving as the gateway to Gosford and the broader region.
The new building’s design is fascinating, with a striking facade and distinctive porte cochere entry that draws you into the Club.
“Throughout the building tender process, it was always paramount for the board to ensure the best finished product and the best value for the expenditure of our member’s money,” said Gosford RSL Club CEO Russell Cooper.
“So we were all delighted when local builder, North Construction & Building was clearly the best.
“Their capability, price and aligned values made them our obvious choice. Since that day we’ve been a team, Gosford RSL, North, APP and WMK. A cooperative, non-adversarial, supportive team - working together to overcome challenges and deliver the best solutions.”
The Gosford RSL Redevelopment represents a significant building project for North.
“As a regional construction company founded on the Central Coast over 37 years ago, it’s very special to us to have delivered a project like the Gosford RSL Club,” North managing director Matthew Cook said.
“Not only does the development simply transform this gateway into Gosford, but as a venue doing so much for the local community and Central Coast broadly it is rewarding for us to play our part.
“Being the largest project North has delivered to date, it has enabled us to demonstrate our expertise as a trusted building partner. With our focus on local engagement and with great thanks to a team of supportive and skilled trade contractors, everyone involved should be extremely proud of what has been delivered for Gosford RSL.”
North Construction & Building was founded in 1987 and has grown to become a trusted regional construction company with an award-winning reputation for excellence.
North has always been 100 per cent employee owned. A business that genuinely cares and where relationships matter, they are known for a different approach.
With offices in Tuggerah, Newcastle, Dubbo, Orange, Mudgee, Tamworth and Brisbane, North works across a diverse range of projects within the commercial, education, aged care, health, industrial, infrastructure, retail, and hospitality sectors.
In everything North does as a business, they are aiming to build trust with their trade contractors, employees, clients and in the community.
WMK Architecture principal John Andreas said by seamlessly integrating contemporary design with the vibrant coastal spirit of Gosford they have crafted more than just a building.
“It’s a dynamic gateway to the heart of this community,” Mr Andreas said.
“A diverse range of exciting food, beverage and function venues are located over two floors that all look out over a unique double-storey covered outdoor garden terrace.
“Our design aims to attract a new generation of patrons while honouring the legacy of the RSL. I am proud to say that our approach embodies both elegance and longevity, offering an enduring addition to Gosford’s urban landscape.”
Director of Projects for WMK Architecture Belinda McHarg said as the person responsible for overseeing the delivery and construction phases she was thrilled to witness the completion of the new Gosford RSL.

“The Gallery offers an exceptional venue for a wide range of events,” she
said. “With its impressive capacity of 600 plus, it introduces a whole new level of grandeur that has never been witnessed on the Central Coast before.
“Our aim is to revolutionise the local business landscape while still catering to our beloved community and businesses.
“Thanks to the incredibly versatile design of the spaces, we have the freedom to make this vision come to life. As a team, we are eagerly preparing to host some of the most spectacular events the Central Coast has ever experienced.”
Executive chef Simon Quick said he was excited to see the vision turn into reality after so many years of planning.
“It is truly inspiring,” he said. “The Gallery conference and event centre is best in class, designed to cater to 600 guests and with a state-of-the-art kitchen to service it.
“Along with my talented team we have created a variety of menus to suit any occasion: from a casual canape party overlooking the outdoor area to a gala dinner in the main gallery.
“The menus have evolved from a variety of cultures and countries and our brewery supplies us with beer and spent malt to cook with. Where possible, we have sourced local sustainable produce, to support our community.
“This is going to be a very exciting year for the Gallery team and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Mr Quick said.

Pacific Link Housing launches Renew
PACIFIC Link Housing, the only Tier One Community Housing Provider headquartered on the Central Coast, is thrilled to announce the launch of its latest social enterprise, Renew Projects.
As a wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Link Housing, a non-profit and registered charity, Renew Projects has been established as a multi-trade service to provide property maintenance and renovation services across the Central Coast, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle regions.
Operating under a profit-for-purpose model, the net earnings from Renew Projects will be used to enhance the environmental sustainability of Pacific Link Housing’s affordable housing developments.
Ian Lynch, CEO of Pacific Link Housing, expressed his enthusiasm about the potential impact of Renew Projects.
“Leveraging Pacific Link Housing’s vast experience in tenancy and asset management, the launch of Renew Projects extends our in-house maintenance and renovation capabilities. This initiative allows us to conduct residential property upgrades internally, reducing reliance on external contractors and ensuring compliance with our high-quality standards. After a couple of months of operating, we are now ready to offer these services to third parties who wish to
engage Renew Projects for residential renovations.”
Angus Ramsey, General Manager of Renew Projects, commented on the progress made since the social enterprise’s inception.
“Since we began operations in early February, our team of highly skilled tradespeople has been delivering exceptional results. We take pride in being an integral part of the Pacific Link Housing family, contributing to initiatives that extend beyond con-
Lventional property maintenance and renovations and positively impact the community.”
Renew Projects has garnered significant support from partnerships formed to date. Mitre 10 Kincumber has committed to ongoing assistance with discounted materials and tools, amplifying the business’s impact. Additionally, the Central Coast Branches of Bendigo Bank made a substantial charitable donation, which was crucial during the start-up phase, laying a solid foundation for the social enterprise.
Renew Projects is Pacific Link Housing’s second social enterprise venture, following the success of Key2 Realty, a real estate agency offering property management services to residential landlords. This expansion highlights Pacific Link Housing’s continuing commitment to providing a comprehensive suite of property solutions for residential property owners and builds on the success of Key2 Realty.
Renew Projects is eager to collaborate with homeowners and residential property investors seeking renovation services. This launch is a testament to Pacific Link Housing’s dedication to driving positive social and environmental change, offering innovative property solutions with a strong community focus. Visit
Conditions survey reveals concerns
EADING peak industry body Business NSW have released their latest Business Conditions Survey reporting Central Coast Businesses have lingering concerns about cash strapped customers, insurance and energy costs.
“Business confidence levels for local business in the first quarter of 2024 dropped 4.6 points to -70.6 however businesses are reporting a dramatic jump in confidence to -29.4 for quarter two suggesting the pause in interest rates and an increase in retail trade will improve business performance,” Business NSW Regional Director Scott Goold said.
“Across NSW, the latest Business Conditions Survey – the most comprehensive business temperature check in the most important state – reveals the pause in interest rate rises has helped lift the Business Confidence Index for the third straight quarter to -52.9.
“The disparity between the statewide confidence level and that of the Central Coast is due to a greater increased wage expectation and more significant cashflow disruptions across the region.
“While the quarter one result is concerning, the improved outlook for quarter two shows how the diversity of industry across the Central Coast helps to contribute to quick rebounds when things get tough.
“Interest rates holding is also playing a big role in recovery. With every interest rate rise, businesses experience an almost immediate reduction in customers walking through the door. This forecast increase in business confidence is a positive sign.” Mr Goold said.
When it comes to their customers, 95% of businesses are experiencing some impact of the rising cost of living.
“The most common experience is reduced customer demand for their products and services,” Mr Goold said.
“A majority of businesses have observed consumer behavioural changes in the form of reduced frequency of purchases, reduced quantity per order, increased appetite for lower cost substitutes and increased price negotiation.
Insurance is again the top of list of cost concerns for businesses, while taxes/levies are second and energy costs third.
More than half of NSW small to medium business experienced supply chain issues in the past three months, reflecting the devastating impact of industrial action at our nation’s ports.
“Our members remain concerned about the new industrial relations laws which threaten to put a serious dampener on the NSW economy in the coming months and years,” Mr Goold said.
“It remains vitally important that our state and federal governments make the cost of doing business the number one, two and three issues on their agenda.
“To improve the ease of doing business, survey respondents consider taxes, levies and government charges as the area that requires top priority attention from government.” Mr Goold said.
Key findings from the survey include:
• 95% of businesses are experiencing some impact of the rising cost of living.
• More than half (54%) of Central Coast businesses have reported business supply chain disruptions in the past three months.
• 6% of Central Coast businesses observed more job applicants as a result of cost-of-living pressures.
• 92% of businesses have identified issues related to attracting and retaining skilled workers in their region.
• 20% of businesses are planning to hire additional staff in the next three months, while 24% are planning to cut staff. The rest are planning to maintain the same headcount.

Legacy changes its name
BRISBANE Water (NSW) Legacy has been operating on the NSW Central Coast since June 1951 providing support and services for the families of Veterans.
With a proud history, which included operating two Aged Care Facilities, and a large Retirement Village in Gosford, many changes have occurred over the past 73 years, particularly the growth of the Central Coast region and demographic changes.
To ensure our community is aware of Legacy and the services and support provided in this region, we
have changed our name to: Central Coast Legacy.
The name has changed but the commitment remains the same; “Supporting our Veterans’ Families”
Formally announcing this change, over 90 of our War Widows and family beneficiaries attended an event at The Entertainment Grounds in Gosford on 4th April 2024, the Central Coast Legacy Race Day.
This event has been funded by generous local and national business groups.
CEO Peter Lawley OAM, in announcing this
change reflected on the proud history of Brisbane Water Legacy, and the level of support provided by a dedicated group of Legatees (volunteers) since 1951, all funded through community donations, support of the Chapman trust, and astute business decisions by the Legatees over the past 73 years.
Legacy is a National Charity, and in 2023 celebrated 100 years of service to the families of veterans. Legacy receives no government funding, and locally just over $1M is spent annually to provide this support.
DEVELOPING COAST FLOOD RISK TOOLS Managing our disaster profile
CENTRAL Coast Council has developed online flood risk tools and updated flood and emergency planning information on centralcoast.nsw.gov.au, to help the local community understand their own flood risk and be adequately prepared to respond.
Council Director Environment and Planning, Alice Howe said we’ve experienced various types of flooding on the Central Coast and know that flooding will continue to be part of our lives, and can occur at any moment.
“Whilst it’s not always possible to predict when, where, or how big the next flood will be - we can estimate the likelihood of different sizes of floods and their consequences by using computer flood modelling,” Dr Howe said.
“Our new interactive online flood risk mapping tool for Tuggerah Lakes area, draws on current flood levels directly from the Bureau of Meteorology and converts it into a visual display, which shows the extent of current, minor, moderate or major
flood levels for specific properties in the area. For residents in other areas, the region-wide online mapping tool provides a range of flood information on a visual map.
“Both these flood risk tools help the community, especially residents living in low lying areas or within a floodplain, to visualise potential flood impacts to their properties and surrounding roads or access routes, and plan ahead to build resilience.”
Council has a holistic approach to disaster management which encompasses: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. This approach is regularly reviewed and updated to incorporate new learnings from each disaster event, and shared knowledge from a range of key stakeholders including the community, lead emergency agencies and supporting organisations.
In addition to the flood risk tools, Council has also developed a suite of updated online information to help
the community understand the types of flooding that occurs on the Central Coast, Council’s role in emergency management, water level data, and triggers for flood intervention. The online information also includes simple steps to follow to plan and prepare for flooding, who to contact for help during a flood and how to stay informed.
Key online links:
• Flood risk tools.
• Types of flooding that can occur on the Central Coast.
• Tuggerah Lakes, The Entrance channel and coastal lagoon water levels and intervention triggers.
• Plan and prepare for emergencies.
• Emergency contacts and staying informed.
• Planning and development within flood zones.
Council Administrator, Rik Hart said planning and preparing for flood emergencies is important and a shared responsibility.
“Council works hand in hand with lead emergency agencies (such as NSW State Emergency Service) and other organisations to share knowledge and resources to help our local communities prepare for floods and other natural disasters,” Mr Hart said.
“Understanding flood risks and being prepared to respond is key for building community resilience. Council’s new flood risk tools, with localised information and resources will help residents understand their risk, think about what they need to do and how they can help protect their home, belongings and family.
“I encourage our community to tap into these online resources, see how floods may affect them and be adequately prepared.”

THE POWER OF WE Fitness benefits of group training
IN the realm of fitness, the saying “strength in numbers” holds true. Group training, a dynamic and interactive approach to exercise, has gained immense popularity for good reason. Beyond the individual pursuit of physical fitness, group training offers a myriad of benefits that extend far beyond the mere act of breaking a sweat. From motivation and accountability to social support and camaraderie, the advantages of working out in a group setting are boundless.
One of the most compelling benefits of group training is the inherent motivation it provides. When surrounded by like-minded individuals, each striving towards their fitness goals, the collective energy becomes infectious. Whether it’s a high-intensity interval training class or a yoga session, the presence of others fuels motivation, pushing participants to give their all. The shared experience
fosters a sense of camaraderie, transforming the workout environment into a supportive community where everyone encourages each other to strive for greatness.
Moreover, group training offers a level of accountability that is often lacking in individual workouts. Knowing that others are counting on you to show up and give your best effort can be a powerful motivator. It’s much harder to skip a workout when you know your absence will be noticed by your fellow group members. This accountability fosters consistency, a key ingredient in achieving longterm fitness success.
Beyond motivation and accountability, group training also provides a valuable opportunity for social interaction. In today’s fast-paced world, finding time to connect with others can be challenging. Group workouts offer a convenient way to socialize while prioritizing health and
fitness. Whether it’s exchanging workout tips, sharing personal successes, or simply enjoying each other’s company, group training creates bonds that extend beyond the gym walls.
Furthermore, the social aspect of group training can have a profound impact on mental well-being. Exercise is known to release endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and euphoria. When combined with the social support and camaraderie of a group setting, the mental health benefits are amplified. Group workouts provide a safe space where individuals can relieve stress, boost their mood, and build resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
Additionally, group training offers a diverse range of workouts that cater to different fitness levels and preferences. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, there’s a group
fitness class suited to your needs. From dance-based cardio classes to strength training circuits, group training provides variety and novelty, keeping workouts fun and engaging. This diversity not only prevents boredom but also ensures that participants are constantly challenging their bodies in new ways, leading to greater fitness gains.
Moreover, group training fosters a sense of healthy competition among participants. While working towards individual goals, the friendly rivalry within the group pushes everyone to elevate their performance. Whether it’s striving to run faster, lift heavier, or hold a yoga pose longer, the presence of others
encourages individuals to push past their limits and reach new heights.
Group training offers a multitude of fitness benefits that extend far beyond the physical realm. From motivation and accountability to social support and mental well-being, the power of working out in a group setting is undeniable. By harnessing the collective energy of like-minded individuals, group training empowers participants to achieve their fitness goals while forging meaningful connections along the way. So, if you’re looking to elevate your workouts and experience the transformative power of community, consider joining a group training class today.

RIP CURRENT SAFETY LESSONS INTRODUCED Lifesavers offering free safety advice
PEOPLE with a keen interest in learning rip current safety skills are encouraged to get along to free safety lessons led by local volunteer lifesavers at Umina Beach and Pearl Beach from April 12-18.
Participation in these rip safety lessons will not only help everyone better understand ways to stay safe on unpatrolled beaches; their attendance and feedback will contribute towards an important drowning prevention research project being conducted collaboratively by Ocean Beach and Umina Surf Life Saving Clubs, Surf Life Saving Australia, the Universities of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales.
Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch MP praised the collaborative research initiative and encourages locals to contribute their time and feedback at the rip current safety skills lessons.
“Our local beaches are beautiful drawcards for locals and visitors alike. However, we must acknowledge that a degree of risk often lies beneath our waves,” she said.
“Staying safe and making the most of our local beaches requires knowledge and skill. It’s important for us Coasties living alongside or near our beaches to never take the surf for granted. It is just as critical for visitors unfamiliar with the beaches. We must learn to better understand the kinds of risks that are ever-present – such as rip currents – which are unfortunately renowned for having taken the precious lives
of locals and visitors.
“Having rip safety messages onboard - and sharing this knowledge and skills with others in our communities - our families, our friends, our networks - can make a difference when people are confronted with dynamic coastal hazards at unpatrolled beaches.
“I actively encourage locals to say hi to your local volunteer surf lifesavers at Umina Beach and Pearlie and learn some valuable skills.”
Participants who can briefly speak with the research team after the safety lesson will be provided with a complimentary drink voucher that can be redeemed at the Umina Beach Cafe.
Leading beach safety researcher Professor Rob Brander and other beach risk experts argue that reliance on the prevailing message to ‘swim between the flags’ is not enough. Professor Brander says that new evidence-based approaches to beach safety that target drowning prevention on unpatrolled beaches are needed.
“This new research - which connects communities with lifeguards and lifesavers through safety lessons on the beach - is a fantastic and much needed initiative that will help expand beach safety education and drowning prevention efforts beyond the flags.”
The research team will be assessing the public’s response to safety lessons conducted by volunteer lifesavers, whether the safety messages are retained, and how likely they are
to apply them at an unpatrolled beach.
Later in the year, during August, participants will be contacted to determine whether they have changed their behaviour the next time they visited the beach.
A published study using the same methods of community engagement was successfully tested in Lorne, Victoria during January 2023 in a study conducted in partnership with the Surf Coast Shire, Council lifeguards, Life Saving Victoria and Surf Life Saving Australia. The study found that learning how to more skilfully identify and escape rip currents was key to behaviour change. They also learnt how to assist others caught in, or attempting to perform a rescue in, hazardous rip currents.
Research also found changed beachgoing behaviours include comfort with asking lifeguards about site-specific risks and how to identify rip currents before entering the water.
Associate Professor Brian Cook from the University of Melbourne said community engagement was the key pillar in the research project being conducted at Umina and Pearl Beach.
“Our objective is to evaluate the impact of evidenced-based drowning prevention via relationship building between lifesavers and beachgoers through the delivery of skill development lessons on the beach,” he said.
Dr Jaz Lawes, Research
Team Leader at Surf Life Saving Australia says: “Over summer we tragically saw 55 people drown along the Australian coast, a 10% rise above the tenyear average. The New South Wales coastline was where 14 of these fatalities occurred, 38% of these drowning deaths were rip-related and 100% occurred outside the red and yellow flags.
“This research will help guide us to deliver lifesaving education in the most effective way possible, to stop these preventable tragedies from occurring.”
Safety lessons at Umina Beach and Pearl Beach Beachgoers at Umina Beach and Pearl Beach keen to learn about beach safety and how to avoid rip currents are encouraged to get down to Umina Beach on Friday, April 12 –Sunday, April 14, and Tuesday, April 16 to Thursday, April 18 at Pearl Beach to attend one of four free 10-minute safety lessons. Sessions are held four times a day between 11:30am and 3:30pm.
Further information about the research project
Research project leads are A/Prof, Brian Cook and Dr Peter Kamstra from the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospherics Sciences at the University of Melbourne, supported by SLSA’s Research Team Dr Jaz Lawes and Sean Kelly. Local lifesaver and beach safety educator Louise Lambeth from Ocean Beach Surf Lifesaving
Club is the local contact. The research project was developed as part of the Community Engagement for Disaster Risk Reduction (CEDDR) research program run out of the University of Melbourne. The CEDRR methodology was developed by A/Prof Brian Cook, whose research demonstrates that community engagement needs to be about more than just giving people information or telling them what to do. CEDRR puts relationship building at the centre of all their community engagement research, taking the time needed to have meaningful conversations that collect both data and stories.
About the research
