National Parkinson’s Awareness Month

During the month of April, organizations and individuals come together to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.

Parkinson’s disease affects over one million people in the United States with more than 90,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Most individuals develop symptoms after the age of 60, but early onset forms of the disease can affect individuals in their 30s, 40s, 50s. Parkinson’s disease occurs when the neurons in the brain that produce the hormone dopamine begin to die. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects muscles and movement. Without the right amount of dopamine in our bodies we begin to experience tremors, stiffness, and difficulty moving, and balance problems. As the disease progresses, the symptoms can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Family Caregivers Network specializes in the care of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Our Parkinson’s program helps an individual manage the disease by focusing on the 3M’s, memory, movement, and medications. Please call our office or visit our website to learn more about how we can help you and your loved ones with Parkinson’s Disease!
