Elmore County is a county of the State of Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 79,303. Its county seat is Wetumpka. Its name is in honor of General John A. Elmore. Elmore County is part of the Montgomery, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elmore County was established on February 15, 1866, from portions of Autauga, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Montgomery Counties. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 657 square miles (1,700 km2), of which 618 square miles (1,600 km2) is land and 39 square miles (100 km2) (5.9%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 65,874 people, 22,737 households, and 17,552 families residing in the county. The population density was 106 people per square mile (41/km2). There were 25,733 housing units at an average density of 41 per square mile (16/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 77.02% White, 20.64% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 22,737 households out of which 37.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% were married couples living together, 12.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.80% were non-families. 20.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07. In the county the population was spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $41,243, and the median income for a family was $47,155. Males had a median income of $32,643 versus $24,062 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,650. About 7.40% of families and 10.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.20% of those under age 18 and 11.30% of those age 65 or over. In the late 1990s voters voted to pass a mandatory fire fee for volunteer fire services. All citizens pay this same fee regardless of valuation of the property or income levels. As of the census[11] of 2010, there were 79,303 people, 28,301 households, and 21,003 families residing in the county. The population density was 128 people per square mile (49/km2). There were 32,657 housing units at an average density of 49.7 per square mile (19.2/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 76.2% White, 20.0% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 28,301 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.04. In the county the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37.8 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males. The median income for a household in the county was $53,128, and the median income for a family was $62,870. Males had a median income of $46,952 versus $31,542 for females. The per capita income for the county was $22,640. The French established Fort Toulouse at the confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa in 1717, upon which site Gen. Andrew Jackson erected Fort Jackson in 1814, following the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Wetumpka is the county seat. Other towns and communities include Eclectic, Tallassee, and Millbrook. Settlers from the Carolinas and Georgia began pouring into present-day Elmore County during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, complicating the already strained relationship between the state and federal governments and the Creeks. In 1812, Shawnee chief Tecumseh led a faction of the Creeks known as the Red Sticks in an uprising that culminated in the defeat of the Creek Nation by Andrew Jackson’s troops at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814. After the battle, the Creeks were forced to cede their land to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Jackson. Elmore County was home to Alabama’s first governor, William Wyatt Bibb, who died shortly after being appointed to office. After settlers flooded the area, it quickly became a highly successful agriculture and mercantile hub for east-central Alabama. Although no battles were fought in the county during the Civil War, in 1864 Confederate Chief of Ordnance Josiah Gorgas moved the Richmond Carbine Factory from Richmond, Virginia, to the Tallassee Manufacturing Mill along the Tallapoosa River in eastern Elmore County to evade Union troops. The mill was the only Confederate armory not destroyed during the war. On April 27, 2011, a massive storm, causing numerous powerful tornadoes, struck the southeastern United States. More than 250 people were killed in Alabama, including six people in the community of Eclectic in Elmore County.

When we discussed his strategies for making time to work out (in addition to running a business), AJ credited time blocking as a key to his success. Time blocking is when you set aside focused intervals of time to do just one thing (like go to the gym, work on a specific task, and so forth) and make a point to adhere to that schedule for the entire day.

AJ pointed out that this principle is as successful in business and dieting as it is in working out because you don’t waste time deciding what to do all day. If you are prepared, your day can go according to plan. My own experience completely backs this idea up. When I was in high school, I attended a private boarding school where everything was very structured. From the minute I woke up until bedtime, I knew where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to be doing, so I couldn’t waste time. It was extremely helpful and taught me good habits early on (which I admit I don’t always follow). If you’ve been struggling to get your workouts in every day, or even if you have the time, try AJ’s method of time blocking for a week and see what a difference it makes. You might find the structure gives you more time than you could have imagined.

Jasmine hill stands as “a little corner of greece” atop the southernmost outcroppings of the appalachians. it was conceived in 1928 by benjamin and mary fitzpatrick and has grown into a virtual outdoor museum featuring reproductions of famous greek and roman works of art. the story of an alabama couple who spent their early married life busily establishing a chain of stores in the south and then retiring to their hilltop haven to creat a living memorial to ancient greece. getting a jump on the depression, the fitzpatricks sold their store holdings in 1927, just before the crash. after the depression came, they were reluctant to venture into business again, so they came to jasmine hill to stay and make their home in the 1830-era cottage within the gardens. a garden of this magnitude did not develop overnight. in fact, the fitzpatricks made over twenty trips to greece to purchase their art objects, to study at the american classical school in athens, and to simply enjoy greek culture. A boat with a hole in the top for which you sit down inside with your legs under the deck of the boat. There are recreational sit inside kayaks, whitewater sit inside kayaks and touring sit inside kayaks. Recreational sit inside kayaks tend to have larger cockpit openings thus making them less claustrophobic. Recreational sit inside kayaks tend to be novice friendly boats and often times you can carry a lot of gear below deck. We sell recreational sit inside kayaks as well as rent them for flatwater trips on the Tallapoosa River. Whitewater kayaks are shorter boats, have small cockpit openings, and the paddler often wears a ‘skirt’ to keep water out of the boat. Whitewater kayaks aren’t for everyone, have little to no storage space below deck and require special skills to perform river (eskimo) rolls and tricks. We at Coosa River Adventures sell whitewater kayaks but we do not rent them. Touring kayaks are longer boats, have small cockpit openings, and the paddler often wears a ‘skirt’ to keep water out of the boat. Touring kayaks often feel ‘tippy’ to novice paddlers.
