Somerset Good Neighbours launched in Somerset! Popping round to borrow a cup of sugar can often be the extent of our relationship with our closest neighbours and it is this disconnect that CCS is hoping to tackle as it launches the Somerset Good Neighbours Scheme. CCS has won funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to facilitate the first village/parish-based Good Neighbour (GN) scheme in Somerset.
that they can support each other in a neighbourly way.
The scheme is intended to partner willing volunteers and helpers with anyone needing help with small one-off tasks, such as lifts to medical appointments, dog walks, or even simply sharing a cup of tea and a friendly chat. The aim is to bring people together and help build strong relationships and connections within local communities so
The pilot scheme will be in approximately 10 communities where locals have expressed an interest and want support to help get started. CCS has developed a toolkit with helpful advice and hints and tips on: • How to hold public meetings to recruit Good Neighbours • How the group is structured: constituted or informal, a simple set of policies/procedures, publicity etc. • Dos & Don’ts • Training, safeguarding, DBS checks and financial management

Sign up for Community Business Weekend There are nearly 8,000 community businesses in England but few people know what they are, or how they are improving life for many communities across the country. So, in 2016 Power to Change launched Community Business Weekend to shine a light on them. Last year saw over 17,000 visit 225 community businesses to learn all about the impact they are having, and how to get involved. Now in its fourth year, Community Business Weekend will run from Thursday 16th May to Sunday 19th May, with people across the country encouraged to visit a community business near them and find out what they do.
This year’s theme is #CommunityBusinessMatters. We’re asking people involved in community businesses and local people to share why #CommunityBusinessMatters to them and their local area. All community businesses who host events will receive free marketing support and bunting. Sign up and find out how you can get involved on www.communitybusinessweekend.org/ support https://www.princescountrysidefund.org.uk/ who-we-are/latest-news/post/170-sign-upfor-community-business-weekenda?utm_ source=smartmail&utm_medium=email&utm_ campaign=March+2019

Community Ownership for Old School Queen Camel Community Land Trust (CLT) has recently taken ownership of a former school site in their village, thanks to a successful bid for funding from the ‘Power to Change’ fund. The CLT are now beginning to clear the site and make it ready for their planned employment hub and community health& wellbeing centre. When a new school was built in the village, it left the much loved Countess Gytha Primary school building vacant. The Victorian school building and the later additions was put up for sale by Somerset County Council. The CLT had only a few months to raise the £250,000 needed to purchase the site. The group approached CCS and their Smart Communities team helped them to write a bid to the Lottery ‘Awards for All’ fund. When this was successful, Smart Communities helped them to undertake a community consultation to understand how local people might use and be involved in this new venture. Using the information that the survey gave them, they were successful in receiving the money that enabled them to buy the building in May 2019.
Rosemary Heath-Coleman, Chairman of the Trust, said: “This is an exciting new community business enterprise close to the A303 and at the gateway to South Somerset. It will offer space at reasonable rents and support for businesses especially start-up or businesses wanting to expand from working from home.” This is an amazing achievement by the CLT and a very exciting time for everyone involved. CCS are pleased to have supported this new venture.

The government is making £163 million available across England up to 2021 through the Community Housing Fund. Community-based groups which expects to need grant funding (or other forms of financial support) to take forward a local house building project over the next few years, are requested to contact Homes England by Friday 31 May to notify the organisation of their community-led housing scheme so that the appropriate advice and support can be provided. The Fund aims to support an increase in housing supply in England by increasing the number of additional homes delivered by the communityled housing sector; to provide housing that is affordable at local income levels and remains so in perpetuity; and to deliver a lasting legacy for the community-led housing sector in the form of an effective and financially self-sustaining body of expertise within the house building industry in England. Funding outside London is being allocated by Homes England across 2 phases – A separate programme for London will be delivered by the Greater London Authority. This is in addition to £60 million funding that has already been allocated directly by government to 148 councils. Under Phase One of the Fund, Homes England is making available grants to eligible organisations to support: o Applications for revenue funding for capacity building and predevelopment costs, including revenue grants to local authorities to support community groups; and o Capital bids for associated infrastructure costs which will support community housing development.
Under Phase Two of the Fund Homes England is making available grants to eligible organisations to help cover the capital costs of acquiring land and building community-led housing schemes.
