Meet Larin Borden, who lives in Martinez with her family. She recently graduated from College Park High School and will attend San Francisco State University in the fall. What are you most excited and most nervous about in starting college? I’m excited for the new experiences that college provides as a fresh start somewhere new. I’m really nervous about the expense of college and living with people I don’t know. What will your major be? I don’t have a major yet since I’m interested in so many areas, but I’m looking into a variety of fields such as finance and design. I am even taking classes such as astronomy and philosophy. What will you miss the most and the least about high school? I think what I will miss the most is the security of having all your family and friends by your side. What I’ll miss the least is the attitude and lack of maturity of others. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? I hope to see myself with a college degree and a stable job. What are your plans for the rest of summer? Going on adventures with family and friends and preparing for college life.

Local Boy Reaches for the Stars Ethan Portnoff Graduates from Renowned Space Camp Pleasant Hill student Ethan Portnoff recently attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The week-long educational program promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) while training students and adults in hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership, and problem solving. The Space Camp program is an overnight camp designed for trainees, aged 9 – 18, who have an interest in space exploration. Portnoff spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to Mars. Each team member had specific duties and learned to do their part and trust each other over the course of the week. Ethan was the payload engineer and ensured the captain had properly deployed the switches. They also got to go into the Zero G “MAT” simulator, a

new $350,000 machine from NASA. The crew participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk, and returned to earth in time to graduate with honors. Space Camp operates year-round and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Trainees sleep in quarters designed to resemble the International Space Station and train in NASA-inspired simulators. Last year, children and teachers from all 50 states and 69 international locations attended Space Camp. Ethan’s group of 15 students came from six different states, along with two boys from Singapore and Vietnam. Three different camp offerings include Space Camp, with a mission to Mars; Aviation Camp, Ethan’s choice for next summer; and Robotics Camp, which is for 13 to 18 year olds and Space Camp graduate Ethan Portnoff.

2016/2017 Readers’ Choices Are In! We are excited to present the results of our 4th annual Readers’ Local Favorites poll. During the months of May and June 2017, a record number of loyal readers took advantage
of the opportunity to vote for their favorites in 53 categories online at the homepage of our website, www.ourcommunityfocus.com, where results can also be found. But hang on to this issue! You’ll want to refer to it again and again to find the best places to eat, get a drink, or see where locals go for skin care, a gorgeous new hair cut and color, or a relaxing massage. How do you decide whom to trust for financial, estate, or tax services or getting a tune-up for your car? Take the advice of your friends and neighbors who voted for their

favorite spots for happy hour, yoga classes, and Thai food. Congratulate these businesses! They’ve worked hard to earn the accolades. And the next time you need
to eat or shop, take care of your finances, your health, or a loved one’s health, or just relax, look to the Readers’ Local Favorites issue to help you decide where to go or who to see! You will certainly spot some of your old favorites and, hopefully, find some gems you didn’t know existed. The publishers would like to give a shout out to our readers for their enthusiastic responses to our fourth “Favorites” issue, and we congratulate all the winners and finalists for being recognized for their exceptional products and services.

Neighborhood Heroes Merging Adult Care & Preschool BY SABRINA MARSHALL While many people take advantage of the changing seasons to do away with the old and bring in the new, the people at Choice in Aging are finding a perfect balance of both. CEO Debbie Toth has been working tirelessly to introduce a new type of education to the community – Intergenerational Programs. Designed to bring together the elderly at Choice in Aging and preschoolers at the former Fountainhead Montessori Preschool, it’s an entirely new learning experience. Several months ago, those leasing both facilities decided they wanted to level and rebuild in order to improve their services. With that decision, they decided to renew the lease for their spaces only through June of 2018, giving everyone plenty of time to come up with alternatives before the renovations began. However, those leasing the preschool space decided to close their doors early, in June of this

year, leaving families and faculty confused and scrambling for a replacement. Toth knew she wanted to help, not only as a caregiver for over 15 years but as a friend to many of those involved with the preschool — many of whom thought she was associated in the preschool tenant’s decision. “I had colleagues that I’ve worked with for years call me and say, “Why are you evicting this preschool?’“ said Toth. Having debated numerous times about the idea of taking on the preschool themselves, Toth thought there was no better time. After brief issues with the state over the significance of adult health care, the preschool became an even more important source of funds. “It wasn’t just that there was this issue of parents losing their services,” said Toth, “but the supplement that we use to pay our staff to fund these programs was being lost.” In order to keep their center running and provide these families with a stable education, the board agreed to take it.

A PREMIERE INTERGENERATIONAL PRESCHOOL & CHILD CARE

where little

SPROUTS cometo GROW

However, ambition comes with hard work — the preschool building was bare, the play structure uprooted, and the amenities sparse. What Toth needed was time and helping hands, so she reached out to an overwhelmingly supportive crowd, bringing in 114 volunteers who gave 475 combined hours of labor over the July 1 weekend. The crew refreshed, repainted, and renewed the small preschool for a soft opening that Monday. “It was a pretty incredible feat to get accomplished over two days, plus the fact that volunteers did all of that work,” said Toth. Preschool Director Gina Velez couldn’t help but repeat how thankful she was for Toth’s commitment to the betterment of the school. From working on a state grant to helping build a new play structure, to re-hiring a majority of the preschool’s previous faculty, Toth’s involvement has been inspiring. Velez said this was their chance to make the preschool their own and be involved in the process from the ground up. Velez is excited for the new opportunities kids will have, including finally joining their adult neighbors in games of volleyball, putting on little performances, and maybe trick-or-treating throughout both facilities on Halloween. Toth has her own ideas too, wanting to involve the kids in the facility’s already-underway horticulture therapy program and seeing the joy the children

will bring their seniors. Both Toth and Velez agree a play structure is of utmost importance. Not only is outside play fundamental for children, but Toth expects to bring in another opportunity to mix kids and adults. “The spaces where the children would play and learn [would be] surrounded by a perimeter of equipment that is accessible to folks with disabilities and aging related frailty,” said Toth. “It’s appropriate for this particular population but also a healthier senior population.” In addition to all the fun both women have planned, they have similar hopes for what this program will do for seniors and children alike. “Intergenerational programming is a mutually beneficial engagement in activities together; it’s not a learning experience about aging per se,” says Toth. Velez put it best, expressing how important it will be for the kids to see we don’t dismiss our elders as life gets more difficult; we take care of them. The grand opening of the Choice in Learning Montessori Preschool and Child Care and the launch of these new intergenerational programs is set for September. However, with all the prep work needed to prepare a fun space for 90 new kids aged 2-6, it could be later in fall. Regardless, with people as dedicated to their community as Toth and Velez at the helm, these programs are sure to bring new life to our community.

AHA! Fundraiser

Hazing Awareness Non-Profit to Host First Annual Monte Carlo Night On Friday, August 25, The AHA! Movement, a local non-profit advocating hazing awareness, will host their first annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser at the Pleasant Hill Community Center, located off Taylor Blvd. “We are blessed to have a communi-

ty of supportive individuals and ecstatic to mix a great time with raising awareness and financial support for a mission essential to the health and well-being of our young people,” says Debbie Smith, MM, founder and CEO of the AHA! Movement.

48 Years of Art in the Park The Martinez Arts Association (MAA) presents its 48th annual Art in the Park on Sunday, August 20, at Susana Park in Martinez, from 10am to 5pm. Over 50 artists are expected at this free, community event. Come and enjoy fine arts and crafts created by local artists, along with live music, food trucks, and beverages, including wine and beer. “Many of the participating artists return year after year because this is such a special event that always draws a large crowd. It really has a local community feel to it,” says Vernon Sanders, MAA president. This year’s music line-up includes the high-energy Tamsen Donner Band, featuring blues and a great selection of original tunes. Also performing will be local favorites UnConcord and The Last Minute Band. Check www.martinezarts.org for the complete schedule of live music. Art in the Park is the MAA’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Don’t miss this year’s silent auction that raises money to support the arts in local schools. The event will feature an “Art Flock” of fabulous lawn flamingos, created and donated by participating artists. There is plenty of free parking in downtown Martinez, with a golf cart shuttle from the farmers’ market area at the Starbucks plaza. Founded in 1968 as a nonprofit organization, the MAA organizes and participates in many community events throughout the year. The goal is to encourage art, culture, and education for local youth. Fundraising proceeds provide scholarships to graduating seniors as well as art grants for elementary through high school teachers. The Martinez Gallery is also a branch of the MAA, and 15% of gallery sales is donated towards the art grant program. For more details about Art in the Park, please visit www.martinezarts.org.

AHA!’s Monte Carlo Night is a blacktie affair, with local personality and musician Paul Cotruvo as MC. The event will run from 6-11pm, and guests will enjoy an elegant buffet, cocktails, dancing, a live auction, and professional gaming. Sponsorships and event tickets are available via AHA!’s website, www.ahamovement.org/store/. All proceeds will benefit the AHA! Movement and their mission to end the senseless and tragic cycle of deaths from hazing. “Anyone who knows Paul Cotruvo knows a good time follows him like a tail! Be prepared to be entertained, cry a little, laugh, cry some more, and leave knowing you made a difference in the lives of our young people,” says event coordinator Jeremy Carlson. The AHA! Movement is a national non-profit, founded and run by Smith in loving memory of her son, Matt Carrington, who was tragically killed in a water hazing incident while pledging a

fraternity at California State University, Chico. Working closley with then State Senator Tom Torlakson, Smith was the catalyst in getting a California law passed to amend the California Education Code and California Penal Code, allowing felony charges for some hazing rituals, and, for the first time, giving prosecutors the ability to seek hazing charges against non-students. The bill was signed into law on September 29, 2006, by then California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and named Matt’s Law, after Smith’s son. The AHA! Movement’s goal is to prevent injury and death by changing the culture of those organizations who participate in the humiliating, degrading, torturous and potentially deadly acts of hazing. For more information about Matt’s story, please visit www.wemissyoumatt. com, and to donate to the AHA! Movement, please visit www.ahamovement. org.

Celebrity Homes Musicians Sing the Blues Over House Prices BY LYNNE FRENCH, WINDERMERE REAL ESTATE Celebrities, like the rest of us, can have a tendency to overprice their homes, leaving them on the market for months and sometimes leading to multiple price reductions. Of course, there are other reasons that a property sits on the market such as location within the neighborhood or a style too specific to the owner that will take time and money to change. When buyers are paying multimillions for a property they can be picky for sure. Alicia Keys’ New Jersey mansion has been on the market for over a year at $14.9 million. Alicia and her husband, Swizz Beatz, purchased it from Eddie Murphy in 2013. The eight-bedroom, 14-bathroom compound includes a bowling alley, professional recording studio, indoor swimming pool, and movie theater. Alicia and Swizz made major renovations, including an entire wing for artwork. Britney Spears now lives in Las Vegas, where she performs in a popular show. In April of this year, she put her stunning mansion in Thousand Oaks, California, up for sale at nearly $9 million. Still on the market in June, she lowered the price to $7.9 million. Now, that is a motivated seller. The home has a game room, infinity-edged pool, and chandeliered dressing room with a jetted tub. The home has 5 bedrooms and 7 baths. Motley Crue super rock star Tommy Lee’s Calabasas mansion is perfect for another rock star. The property has a piano-shaped swimming pool, 2,000 square-foot recording studio, and theater. Tommy listed his home in May for nearly $6 million. Two months later, he reduced the price to $5.7 million – a $296,000 reduction. If you know anyone interested in this bargain, let me know. Oops! In 2015, rapper Little Wayne put his Miami Beach mansion on the market for $18 million. It is now down to $12 million. The 15,101 square foot waterfront home has 9 bedrooms and 9 baths. There are a few things that could throw a potential buyer off, though. The home has giant iguanas wandering through the property and an indoor shark tank. It also features a rooftop skate park, guesthouse with a professional recording studio, and movie theater. Popular R & B singer Jason Derulo bought his Coconut Creek, Florida home for $1.75 million in 2012. About a year later he listed it again for $2.9 million. No bites, so he took it off the market the next year. In 2015, he put it

back on the market for $2.25 million. The Lower Manhattan apartment of Rolling Stones Keith Richards and his wife, Patty Hansen, was listed in March for $12.2 million. It hasn’t sold yet, despite the incredible skyline views and a master suite with two walk-in closets. The home has 4 bedrooms and 4 baths, one with a soaking tub. The design is dramatically white, with dark hardwood floors and a stylish kitchen. Lynne French is the broker/owner of Windermere Lynne French & Associates, CalBRE #01122025. Buyers are still not flocking to Lil’ Wayne’s $12 million Miami Beach home. Could it be the shark tank?

Real Estate Trends High-Value Upgrades Lead to Top-Dollar Offers BY NORMA FLASKERUD The real estate market shows no signs of slowing down. In Pleasant Hill, homes sell very fast. And the inventory of homes for sale remains very low. Properties are coming on the market, but they sell within seven to ten days at most. Realtors will typically set a date to look at offers seven to ten days after the home first comes on the market. An average of 30 homes a month sell in Pleasant Hill, and we do not have even one month’s inventory, creating what is still an extreme seller’s market. Does that mean a seller can overprice their home and sell it? No. Buyers are discriminating, educated and savvy. They will pay what they perceive to be a good value. In this super-competitive market, buyers will only pay top dollar for a home remodeled with top quality finishing in the latest styles. These homes sell for more than you ever imagined and are gorgeous both inside and out. If you plan on replacing anything in your house, we highly recommend you do it with an upgrade. Don’t seek the cheapest replacement. Upgrade it to be stylish and attractive. Take white appliances, for example. Sure, they are neutral and go with everything, but they are not in fashion. Better to go with a high quality, stainless steel version. It will update the vibe in your house and pay off in the long run. Consider investing a few dollars on new light fixtures or ceiling fans. These are generally very affordable and can really add value. A bathroom vanity can be purchased as a unit with a granite or quartz counter, sink, and new faucet very reasonably. You can install new ceramic tile floors that look like wood–very in style. Another stylish new flooring option is laminate. Often, we can’t discern them from real or engineered hardwood floors. Have you tried Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) for ideas? It’s an app that lets you save photos of things you see online to virtual boards. For instance, you can make a board of ideas for a bathroom remodel, kitchen remodel, paint colors, furniture, garden/landscape ideas, etc. It is fun and a lot easier than wandering the big store aisles trying to find what you like.

Last, but not least, we are happy to come over and guide you through the process. Many clients have asked for our input one to two years before they plan on moving so they can make improvements and enjoy them while still living in the house. We often consult with our staging expert; she is an awesome resource for our clients and us. Call The Flaskerud Team for all your real estate needs. To Trust or Not to Trust Are Trusts Still Useful if the Estate Tax is Repealed? BY JEFFREY HALL, ESQ. With Republicans in control of Congress and the White House, there is talk of eliminating the federal estate tax. In 2017, the tax affects only estates over $5.49 million, meaning that for more than 99 percent of Americans, it’s already been repealed. With no estate tax, do you still need a trust? While trusts can be used to shelter assets from the estate tax, they have many other valuable estate planning uses. A trust is a legal arrangement through which one person (or an institution, such as a bank or law firm) called a “trustee,” holds legal title to property for another person, called a “beneficiary.” The following are some of the benefits of trusts. Avoiding Probate. One of the biggest benefits of a trust is avoiding probate. Probate is the process of administering and settling an estate after someone dies. It can be a costly and time-consuming process. Even with small estates, beneficiaries may not have access to estate funds until a will is filed and an executor appointed. A trust gives beneficiaries immediate access to trust funds. If you have property in multiple jurisdictions, a trust can be especially beneficial in avoiding more than one probate proceeding. Also, probate is a public process – anyone can access court records – while assets distributed in a trust are private. Protection for Disability. Another benefit of a trust is to provide protection if you become disabled. If you become incapacitated, the trustee can manage

your finances without the need to go to court and get a conservatorship or guardianship. Control. A trust allows you to specifically detail how you want to distribute your assets. For example, you can choose to dole out benefits in small amounts if you don’t want your beneficiaries to receive all your assets at one time. You can also direct how funds in the trust can be spent on a beneficiary. If you have property, the trust can specify who has the right to use the property, whether it can be sold, and how proceeds should be distributed. Protection from Creditors. Certain types of trusts can be set up to protect beneficiaries from creditors. A properly structured trust can ensure that creditors cannot reach trust funds. This can be helpful if, for example, your intended beneficiary divorces or is the target of a lawsuit. Providing for a Child with Special Needs. If you have a child with special needs, a trust is particularly important. A special needs trust allows a beneficiary with special needs to receive inheritances, gifts, lawsuit settlements, or other funds without losing his or her eligibility for government programs. Trusts are just one possible part of an estate plan. To know if a trust is right for you, consult with your attorney. Jeffrey Hall, Esq. is an experienced trusts & estates attorney. I invited Nick Roscha, an attorney who specializes in real estate law and business, for a quick Q & A about the benefits of working with both a property manager and a professional real estate attorney. Nick has been practicing law in California for 20 years. His specialty is in residential and commercial real estate transactions and litigation, so he’s the right guy to offer advice on the legal issues rental property owners face. Why work with a real estate attorney? The residential landscape is fraught with legal issues and pitfalls for an unwary owner. If you don’t know the ins and outs of listing a property and leasing a property, and you don’t understand the rights of the tenant or how to terminate a tenancy properly and file an unlawful detainer action without violating any rights, you’re going to get in trouble. Under that giant umbrella, an attorney is vital to navigating those waters in this market. Are owners without property managers at a disadvantage? When an owner comes in and they haven’t had counsel or professional management in the past and they want to get a tenant out of their property, one of the main things we notice is that they often don’t have the proper lease forms. We may be dealing

with a California property, but the owner has an Alabama lease that’s 10 years old that they pulled off the Internet. Our legislature is constantly changing what’s required in a lease, and new things have to be included all the time. If you’re going to evict someone, you need to have proper forms and notices because California courts will protect the tenant’s rights during an eviction. If you’re asking for too much or not using the proper wording, you could file it and lose. You’ll pay your tenant’s attorney fees and start all over again. Having legal advice at the outset will be helpful in fixing issues. What’s your advice for staying out of legal trouble? Take all the proper steps when you’re first leasing out a home, and honor the tenant’s rights during the tenancy. Some tenants sue landlords because the landlord has decided to go into the property without notice. This bothers tenants and violates their rights of quiet enjoyment. That opens you up to litigation and damages. So, understand your tenant’s rights. Another thing landlords struggle with is lease termination. If you include an improper amount in your Three Day Notice, you’ll lose your eviction case. You can only include rent – not late fees or utility charges. Those things require a separate notice. You can avoid these mistakes by working with a property manager and a real estate attorney from the beginning. Cleaning the BBQ Grill Keep it Chemical Free with Vinegar Let’s face it; no one likes to clean a BBQ. It ranks right up there with oven cleaning, only worse. However, there are some things you can do to make it easier and quicker. While it is tempting to just empty an entire can of oven cleaner inside your BBQ, it can cause all sorts of problems. Harsh chemicals leave a residue that can affect the taste and smell of the food for the next few barbecues. The chemicals can also harm stainless steel and painted finishes, as well as other components. A great alternative to chemicals is vinegar. It works great for cleaning the grill, and you don’t have to worry about leaving any harmful residue behind. How to Clean with Vinegar All you need is a spray bottle, lukewarm water, white table vinegar, and a sheet of aluminum foil. 1. Pour two cups of vinegar into the spray bottle. 2. Add two cups of water. 3. Put the lid on the bottle and shake it vigorously to mix the water and vinegar together. 4. Fold the aluminum foil until you have a small square, about two inches across in each direction. (Use for step 8) 5. Spray the water/vinegar solution on the racks of the grill and the area above and underneath them to saturation. 6. Let the solution dry for 10 minutes.

7. While the grill dries, pour out any extra water/vinegar solution and refill the bottle with vinegar only. 8. Spray the vinegar on the foil and use it to scrub the grill’s interior. No rinsing is required. You can also use vinegar to clean the exterior of your grill. If you don’t want it to smell like vinegar for days on end, it’s best to go with the diluted solution. Instead of using aluminum foil to scrub, just use a standard cotton cloth. Spray the solution on the cloth instead of directly on the grill so it’s easier to make sure you hit every area. Use a cotton swab to take care of any tight spots. Deep Cleaning with Vinegar If you find that the steps above don’t get your grill grates spotless, there’s another process you can try that may get you a deeper clean. This one again uses vinegar but also combines it with baking soda. 1. Place the grates in a large plastic bag (such as a garbage bag). 2. In a plastic or metal dish, stir together one cup of vinegar and half a cup of baking soda. 3. Pour this solution on the racks. 4. Close the bag and leave it overnight. 5. Rinse the gunk, which should now be loosened, off in the kitchen sink or with the garden hose. Note that the vinegar and baking soda solution will bubble up, just like it did in those science fair volcanoes, so make sure you use a dish that is much larger than what you think you’ll need. If there is any residue remaining on the grill after these steps, a once over with the grill brush should take care of it. Your BBQ should get a thorough cleaning at least once a year. Always refer to the care & maintenance section of your owner’s manual for advice. Avoid all but nonscratch scrubbers, and use only if you have stubborn stains. Source: Family Features

Silver Medal Finish

Senz Wins Golfing Award

Congratulations to PHMSA U12-2005G Team Avalanche and their silver medal finish at the Lake Tahoe “Come Up For Air” soccer tournament over Father’s Day weekend. The girls advanced through the tournament, not allowing a single goal, with a display of stifling defense and mid-field play along with two-penalty kick saves and a single-handed leaping save by their keeper to advance to the semi-finals. The girls fought a tough semi-final match, starting early with a 1-0 lead, and took the game into double overtime at 2-2. With 30 seconds remaining in overtime, the girls scored on a cross from their right forward to their center striker to take the lead and move into the championship game. The girls played their hearts out on the field in a fast-paced championship game but were unable to prevail, with a 0-2 loss. For the girls to advance through this level of play is quite an achievement, and it was a proud day for all of the fathers! Submitted by Kevin Crossman.

John Scott Senz of Pleasant Hill and The First Tee of Contra Costa, was presented with the 2017 Northern California Leadership Academy’s Cathy Wagner Most Inspirational Award. The Academy is sponsored by Youth on Course and was attended by 60 committed young people from The First Tee and Youth on Course Northern California 11-chapter network, from June 18-22. Senz and all of the golfers had the opportunity to meet and interact with participants from all 11 chapters as well as work with and learn from the top golf coaches in the network at the Peter Hay, Del Monte and Poppy Hills Golf Courses. The participants also engaged in fun, extracurricular activities in the Monterey and Pebble Beach area during the week.

A Spin on DIY Back to School

BY REBECCA SEIDENSPINNER I can’t believe summer is coming to an end and the new school year is right around the corner. Sleeping in will be a thing of the past, and life will be back to routines and schedules. The change in schedules will be challenging for some kids and parents, and for others it will happen with ease. I want to show you a few fun DIY crafts that will get your kids excited about going back to school. For as long as I can remember, I have sent my kids to school on the first day with a big, red apple for the teacher. The little sister in our family even took a bite out of the apple one year in the back seat of the car on the way to

school. Where did the tradition of giving an apple to the teacher on the first day of school originate? In the 1700s, poor families in Denmark and Sweden gave teachers baskets of apples as payment for their children’s education. In frontier times, teachers were housed and cared for by the community and paid in vegetables and eggs. The apple is a sign of a teacher, fall, back-to-school and, of course, A is for apple. Keeping with the tradition of apples, I baked some cupcakes that look like apples for an after-school treat on the first day of school. The stem of the apple is made out of a pretzel, and the leaf is made out of a green fruit roll up -- super cute and festive for fall. I don’t believe in big, extravagant back-to-school shopping trips. I do buy school supplies and new shoes for my

kids in the fall. The sales are great. I try and reuse the things that still have life left and buy things the kids need as they are needed. It saves money and teaches the kids to take care of their belongings. A few years ago, I started making cute, back-to-school Chinese food take-out containers filled with goodies and school supplies for each child. The container has their name and the grade they will be in for the school year. It is topped with two pencils that look like chopsticks to bring good fortune in the

upcoming school year. What parent is actually looking forward to getting up super early to start packing school lunches again? Ugh. Not me. But it might make it a little easier and exciting after I bought a bento box from Target. On Sundays, I will wash and chop all of the vegetables and fruits. This will make it more convenient and quick. I like to add a fancy napkin, a personalized note, and a sandwich cut with a favorite cookie cutter. We are now ready for back to school!

Will Mulders Foundation for Autism Change “I Won’t” to “I Will”

Will Mulders was born in 1998 and lives in Martinez with his parents, Peter and Kristi, and his awesome sister, Julia. Although Will is non-verbal autistic with some physical disabilities, his family has refused to allow that to define him. The Mulders family established the Will Mulders Foundation for Autism in 2016 with the mission to increase public awareness and broadcast a message of inclusion and hope to those affected by autism. Will graduated from Alhambra High School in 2016, thanks to his tenacity and hard work, strong family support, the dedication of his teacher Jessica Kartchner, and the student aides who worked tirelessly to teach him how to communicate with an iPad, his “voice to the world.” Will is a busy, active 19-year old who loves Rocky Road ice cream, the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, the beach, horseback riding, kayaking, and Disneyland, where his favorite ride is “It’s a Small World.” He works out four times a week at the YMCA in Pleasant Hill, where he gets weekly swim lessons and likes to use the elliptical, which the family refers to as the “Williptical.” Will also competes in duo races as “Team Willpower” with his dad in 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. Team Willpower is running the Portland Marathon in October and hopes to qualify for the Boston Marathon, the oldest existing marathon in the world. Runners and spectators cheer Will on at

Both organizations will have a booth at the fundraiser. The Mulders want all families affected by autism to feel supported and included in the community. Prostrate Relief with Rezum

Are You Covered Abroad? BY COLLEEN CALLAHAN One of my absolute favorite things to talk about is travel! I enjoy hearing stories about wonderful and unique experiences. For me, travel is about learning about a culture and meeting people. It is fun to share tips and travel gems. One part of a culture that people do not plan on experiencing is the workings of a hospital, clinic, or urgent care facility, but the unexpected, unwanted does happen. Did you know that Medicare does NOT offer foreign travel benefits? Your Medicare supplement should include a limited benefit. Before taking that next trip, make sure to consider options for travel insurance. There are travel plans that offer coverage for single trips or plans that insure multiple trips in a year. There are deductible choices ranging from $0 to $500, coverage for medical evacuations, office visits, x-rays, lab services, and hospitalization for a medical emergency, surgery, and anesthesia.

Plans will cover pre-existing conditions. You can select benefit limits to a maximum of $1 million. You must have domestic medical insurance in place. Medicare satisfies this requirement. Wondering about the cost? For the richest coverage, a zero dollar deductible and a $1 million maximum benefit, the cost for a person age 65, living in Pleasant Hill, is approximately $115 for a 14-day trip. There are also travel plans for those who visit the United States from other countries. It is important to research these plans in advance. The benefits are tied strictly to age. Most plans I have seen offer a very limited benefit to those over age 80. Where is your next trip? Do you have any tips to share with me? If you think travel insurance is worth the investment, give us a call or check our website. We can help with this. Colleen Callahan, CLU, CASL, LUTCF. These minimally invasive therapies are ideal for patients who fail medications or do not want to take daily medications for the rest of their lives. enlarged prostate symptoms. One option that has been around for several years is minimally invasive heat therapies. Thermotherapy delivers targeted heat within the prostate with either radiofrequency or microwave therapy to reduce excess prostatic tissue. These procedures require only local anesthesia in the office setting. The patient is able to return home shortly after the procedure has been performed and can resume normal activities within a few days. A more recent technological advancement with the most promising results is the Rezūm water vapor therapy. Rezūm water vapor therapy is a safe and effective in office or outpatient BPH therapy designed to transform your treatment experience. The Rezūm System uses the power of just a few drops of water to treat the symptoms of BPH with minimal discomfort and rapid symptom relief while preserving erectile function and urinary continence. Patients will typically spend less than one hour in the office,

This is a condition that happens to almost all men as they get older. It is a problem because as the gland grows, it presses on the urethra and causes urination problems such as a weak stream, difficulty urinating, or the sensation of a frequent need to urinate. In the past, the standard of care for BPH has included medication and/or surgery. Men are typically started on medications and given a chance to see if their symptoms improve. Moonlight on Diablo Annual Event September 9

Mark your calendar for Moonlight on the Mountain, a celebration of 46 years of Save Mount Diablo’s success in preserving the beautiful open space that surrounds our community. At the event you will be transported up the mountain’s slopes and treated to an elegant three-course meal, live music, and both live and silent auctions – all while surrounded by the unparalleled, majestic views Mount Diablo has to offer. The evening is “mountain elegant,” so please dress in casual party attire with comfortable flat-soled shoes. Wear several layers in case it is breezy. Buy tickets at www.savemtdiablo.org. Save Mt. Diablo’s Mission To preserve Mount Diablo’s peaks, surrounding foothills, and watersheds through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain’s natural beauty, biological diversity, and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance the area’s quality of life; and provide recreational op-

portunities consistent with the protection of natural resources. What Save Mt. Diablo Does • Preserve natural lands through acquisition and cooperative efforts. • Defend Mount Diablo and its foothills from threats of development through land use planning. • Restore habitat prior to transfer to a public agency for permanent preservation and public use. • Enjoy Diablo’s parks through events and recreational opportunities. Why Save Mt. Diablo Cares This is our home. Preserving natural land forever means safeguarding our quality of life, including our air, water, and views. Only half of Mount Diablo has been preserved. The other half of the mountain, over 70,000 acres, is privately owned and still threatened by development. That means risking the loss of wildlife corridors, ecosystems and recreational opportunities.

Read My Mind

©

It’s a Matter of Life or Death BY MICHAEL G. HARRIS, OD Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg has had to deal with her share of ups and downs, but nothing prepared the Lean In author for the sudden and untimely death of her husband, Dave Goldberg, while on vacation in Mexico. In response to this tragedy, Sandberg and co-author, Adam Grant, wrote Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, And Finding Joy, her story of how she managed to put her life together after Goldberg’s unexpected death. Where does the title come from? While Sheryl was preparing for a family activity shortly after Dave’s death, she cried out “I want Dave.” The thought of carrying on without him was overwhelming. But her friend had the perfect response: “Option A (making the problem go away as if it never happened) is not available.” All that’s left is Option B. The friend then promised to help her “make the most of Option B.” All of us have faced adversity or loss at one time or another and wished it hadn’t occurred. “I didn’t get the job I wanted.” “My spouse left me.” “My mother has cancer.” These are other examples where Option A is simply not possible. As in Sheryl’s case, we can’t undo what happened. But we can turn to the other available option, Option B, and make the best of what we can do. What do you gain by focusing on what went wrong in your life? Certainly it doesn’t allow you to move on or find happiness again. Friends who had not experienced loss did not know what to say to Sheryl or her family. Their discomfort in talking about death was “palpable.” “When people asked how I was doing, I started responding more frankly. I’m not fine, it’s nice to be able to be honest about that.” Sheryl realized that she had to “acknowledge the elephant in the room,”

Dave’s death. Ignoring it only pushed her and her friends further apart. Acknowledging her loss by talking about it in an honest and caring manner brought her and her friends closer together and helped her move on with her life. Certainly, life is not going to be the same after you lose a spouse, but that doesn’t mean your life should end as well. As hard as it may be to believe, Sheryl was able to face her new reality as a single mom and actually start to enjoy life again after Dave’s death. Her book is a powerful message and a must read on how to once again find joy in your life after you suffer a loss or adversity. Another powerful message is found in Paul Kalanithi’s memoir, When Breath Becomes Air. Kalanithi was a brilliant and gifted resident on the verge of a very promising career as a neurosurgeon when his own life was turned topsyturvy by a diagnosis of cancer. The book follows him through the challenges of medical school and residency to the even greater challenges of facing cancer and an untimely death. This book could have been extremely morbid, but it’s not because Kalanithi handles his disease and suffering with the same care he gave to his patients. This is a unique perspective on what’s important in life when healer needs to be healed. With optimism, honesty, and dignity, Kalanithi writes a masterpiece on the transition between wearing a white coat and a hospital gown. What decisions would you make about your life and your family if you knew you had a limited time on earth? In this book, you will discover what courage really is and be inspired to live your life to the fullest.

CalRTA Scholarships $45,000 Awarded by Retired Teachers At the CalRTA (California Retired Teachers Association) Division 52 luncheon on June 7, seven community college graduates received $5,000 in scholarships from the Diablo Vista Retired Teachers Scholarship Foundation (associated with Division 52). These scholarships will go towards each student’s final two years at a four-year university. This year, due to the generosity of the families of two CalRTA Division 52 members, scholarships were added in honor of Ted Brekke and Orville Thisius, longtime members who passed away. Both men were highly respected and dedicated educators, loving husbands, fathers, and friends. Our scholars, pictured (LtoR): Vera Portnova, graduate of DVC, received the scholarship in honor of Orville Thisius and will go to UC Berkeley to study psychology; Sandra Ruiz Ambriz, graduate of LMC, will study kinesiology at CSUEB; Stacy Anne Nova Flores, graduate of LMC, will attend UC Davis to study biomedical sciences; Ashwath Mohan, graduate of DVC and recipient of the scholarship honoring Ted Brekke, will major in statistics at a UC campus; Brittany Ayala, graduate of DVC, will earn a degree in political science at UC Berkeley; Jules Means,

graduate of LMC, will study psychology at UC Davis; and Marcy Tegtmeier, graduate of LMC and recipient of the Barbara Riggins Scholarship, will pursue a degree in sociology (leading to a teaching credential in special education) at UC Davis. Not pictured: Michael Burks, graduate of LMC, who plans to attend Clark Atlanta University to pursue degrees in psychology and music; and Prabhjot Singh, also a graduate of LMC, will go to UC Irvine for a degree in programming and computer sciences. Prabhjot was unable to join us for lunch because he was accepted as one of a select group of individuals given an opportunity to work on a project at NASA Ames this summer. All nine scholars have expressed the desire and passion to give back to society through their future careers. RyanThomas Brown, a representative from the office of Congressman Mark De Saulnier, presented the scholars certificates of recognition. In June, Paramount Pictures filmed the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why in downtown Martinez. The Martinez Gallery at 610 Court Street was used as a Green Room, where stars, make-up artists, hair stylist, and set decorators gathered and waited for their cues. Days after the filming, set decorators returned and purchased 11 paintings created by local artists Rachel Wampler and Ira Nelken. Images of the paintings may be featured in upcoming episodes and used by Paramount in other projects. In addition to the purchase of the paintings, Paramount Pictures donated $500 to the Martinez Arts Association (MAA) for the teacher art grant program for local schools. The Martinez Gallery is a branch of the MAA, and 15% of gallery sales are donated towards the art grant program. Founded in 1968 as a nonprofit organization, the MAA organizes and participates in many community events throughout the year. Fundraising proceeds provide scholarships to graduating seniors as well as art grants for elementary through high school teachers. EXPRESS

Jack Alexander Performs His Magic BY JAKI JONES Award-winning illusionist Jack Alexander will unveil EXPRESS at the Campbell Theatre in Martinez on Friday, August 11, and Saturday, August 12. At only 18-years-old, Jack has already performed at the California Magic Dinner Theatre, Lesher Center in Walnut Creek, venues in Pleasanton and San Francisco and even on the Las Vegas Strip. He is returning to Martinez for the debut performance of this innovative new show that will bring grand illusions, comedy, audience participation, and other surprises. “We deviate from the classic style that most people know magicians by and bring a modern edge to the art form. We are bringing brandnew original illusions, high-energy music, gorgeous assistants and more to make it an immersive and entertaining experience unlike anything that’s ever been seen before,” said Jack. EXPRESS includes positive messages throughout the show that encourage people to express themselves and embrace other people for who they are. Jack explains, “We want to encourage our audience to live their lives authen-

tically and unapologetically, being whoever they want to be despite what other people may think. This message is delivered to the audience through the different storylines and underlying themes of various illusions throughout the show.” Jack, who has been working professionally since age ten, graduated high school this year and is now dedicating his time to performances and perfecting his craft. “So far, everything is right on track and I am excited to see what the future brings!” Jack and his team will bring Las Vegas to Martinez to perform two shows each night on Friday and Saturday, at 6pm and 9pm. Purchase tickets online at http://www. brownpapertickets.com/event/3025953 for $15 each. Tickets will be available at the door, depending on availability. Dangers for Pets in Open Water

Celebrating 10 Years in Martinez

BY DR. LOUISA ASSEO People and pets alike enjoy the long, warm days of summer. Lakes and swimming holes can be irresistible to our canine companions, and romping, swimming, and playing fetch with our dogs is a fun afternoon for all. There can be danger in those waters, however, that you should be aware of before jumping in. Blue-green algae, or cyanobacterium, is a bacterial species that is normally present in lakes and other bodies of water. When the temperature rises and the water circulation decreases, these algae can bloom. These blooms typically occur from the mid-to-late summer months through early fall and can be seen as floating layers of scum on the water surface. The layer can be blue or blue-green but is also known to be white or brown in color, and it usually has a bad odor. Not all algal blooms produce toxins. Most are simply unpleasant in sight and odor; however, any bloom can produce and release toxins. It is here that the danger exists. When an algal bloom is suspected, most counties and regional parks will post signs warning of the potential health effects if you swim there. Dogs are uniquely susceptible to toxic exposure as they can ingest a large amount of water and, therefore, toxins by running through the shorelines and grooming themselves after a day of romping and playing. One of the main toxins is AnatoxinA. This is a potent neurotoxin that causes salivation, excessive tear production, muscle twitching, and stiffness. Clinical signs can begin within minutes. Signs can progress to paralysis of the muscles needed to breath and can result in death within minutes to hours after exposure. The second toxin of major concern is microcystin, which causes liver disease. The signs of Microcystin toxicosis

Most people have trouble remembering what they read in the paper 10 years ago, but odds are you remember hearing something about the Martinez beavers. The unexpected visitors settled in Alhambra Creek in 2007 and caused a controversy that made the headlines and nightly news. When the city was eventually able to find a peaceful resolution, the beavers called the city home for nearly a decade. In fact, it’s so much a part of the town’s shared history that it’s not uncommon to hear stories like “Well, I know it’s 10 years ago because I was in third grade collecting signatures at Luigi’s store to save the beavers, and I’m graduating high school this summer,” or “I was pregnant with Emily when I attended that big meeting at the high school, and she’s turning nine next month!” Say what you want about the beaver story, the animals earned their place in Martinez’s hearts and history -- a place that will be celebrated this summer with the 10th Annual Beaver Festival on August 5. The event boasts environmental displays from five counties, live music, a uniquely wildlife-centered silent auction, and popular children’s activities that combine delightful crafts with environmental learning in an award-winning way. This year, the activity will center on learning how beavers help the environment by allowing children to “earn” wildlife tattoos designed by Coyote Brush Studios. The project will be funded by a grant from the Contra Costa Wildlife Commission and Martinez Community Foundation. The tattoos can be added to leather covers for nature journals the children make on sight, complete with chewed beaver-sticks for binding! Not sure how beavers help wildlife? Don’t worry, the festival will teach participants everything they need to know with a kid-friendly illustrated “beaver wall” that walks you through the process and a costumed beaver expert that explains all the good work beavers do. Brock Dolman of the OAEC Water Institute will be speaking at 12:30pm, and his acclaimed presentation should leave no question about why

appear later than signs of Anatoxin-A and manifest as vomiting, inappetence (loss of appetite), diarrhea, lethargy, black stools, seizures, and a yellowing to the gums or skin (jaundice). Liver failure can result within days of the start of clinical signs. Immediate and aggressive veterinary care is paramount for these dogs. Sadly, most dogs that show clinical signs of this toxicosis will succumb to the toxin, as there is no known antidote. Please heed the posted warnings at lakes for both dogs and people, and use caution if visible patches of algae are present on the water surface. Wishing you and your companions another happy and healthy summertime. Dr. Louisa Asseo, owner of Oasis Veterinary Hospital, can be reached at (925) 954 – 8087, 6635 Alhambra Ave, Suite 100, Martinez, or visit oasisveterinaryhospital.com.

beavers deserve their own festival! As if all this weren’t exciting enough, awardwinning author Ben Goldfarb will also be attending the festival to include it in his upcoming book about beavers. Ben has traveled from Scotland to Alberta to Wyoming in search of the beaver story, but he knew the book wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the most famous beavers and the city that saved them. Artists and scholars from all over have been amused, inspired, and touched by the beaver story. Illustrator Deborah Hocking of Portland was so delighted by the tale that she wanted to design a bookmark for the occasion. Her delightful and whimsical creation will be free to all attendees while supplies last. Worth A Dam is happy to host the 10th Beaver Festival, even though its inspiration is no longer living in Alhambra Creek. “The beavers taught Martinez a wonderful lesson over their decade,” says president Heidi Perryman, “And even though the creek isn’t the same without them, we’re happy to share what we learned and celebrate their gifts.” For more information contact: Heidi Perryman: (925) 228-3190 or mtzbeavers@gmail.com • Brock Dolman (Buck Beaver speaker): OAEC Water Institute • Artist Tina Curiel/Lindsey Moore: Coyote Brush Studios, Lafayette, CA, tina@ coyotebrushstudios.com • Author Ben Goldfarb: (914) 960-2066 http://bengoldfarb.com/ New Haven, Connecticut, ben.a.goldfarb@gmail.com • Artist Deborah Hocking: (574) 527-2526, Portland, OR, deborahhockingillustration@gmail. com.
