Embrace the season. Why keep moving through winter? Heading into the cooler months, it’s important to try and stay healthy naturally. Clare Murden from Core Physio and Pilates talks us through her top tips for staying fit even when the temperatures drop.
When the colder months set in and the days get shorter, finding the motivation to keep the healthy routines we carve out in summer can be difficult. Often, eating and exercise habits can fall by the wayside and be replaced by days spent indoors sheltering from the change of season. Cozy days spent by the fire, sipping hot chocolate and watching movies sounds idyllic, but it’s also important to stay on top of preventive activities such as a healthy diet and exercise. Neglecting them can lead to an all-round weaker immune system, and a greater risk of catching a bug or winding up injured. Clare Murden is a mother of four, a physiotherapist and pilates instructor who lives in Mount Maunganui and doesn’t let cold weather get in the way of maintaining her health. “I’m all about the outdoors, but if it’s horrific weather I’ll do my pilates at home. I involve my baby, so I’ll fly him over my body, aeroplane him around, lie on my front, he climbs on me and it makes it into play. I’m using my environment a lot – the beach is a huge place where I exercise, my family
4
is a part of how I exercise and how I incorporate my children,” she says. She says it’s important to stay on top of their health and wellbeing heading into winter, as it keeps our spirits up despite the waning sunlight hours.
1. Get regular exercise “When you exercise, your body releases chemicals which make you feel good – endorphins and a number of chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. This is proven to help with depression and it’s a mood enhancer. The less sunlight hours can mean more winter blues, so if you’re getting out and getting sunlight and exercising, that will help alleviate your mood.”
2. Ditch the car In order to embrace the season and stay healthy, she recommends finding an exercise that can easily become a part of your routine and avoiding using the car when possible. “The more regularly you do it, the more normal it’s going to feel to do and not as much of a big deal,” Clare says. “It’s about
finding an exercise regime you love to do. It’s not a chore, it’s enjoyable and social, like taking yourself out for a walk and meeting a friend to have a coffee.”
3. Get active indoors and online But for those who aren’t keen to brave the outdoors, she suggests practicing pilates or yoga because it always has an indoors option. “Pilates or yoga is quite a gentle exercise on the body, so if you’re recovering from an injury, that’s the perfect option because it will help you strengthen and retrain muscles. It’s a gentle way of coming back into exercise. “You can also do it whatever the weather, inside or outside and join a class for that social aspect, where you get an instructor who will help with your technique. Alternatively, there are great online options you can sign up for on YouTube.”
4. Stay nourished Exercising aside, Clare says other factors to keep in mind are having a healthy, balanced diet, drinking lots of water to stay hydrated and getting a full night’s sleep.
5. Get a full night of sleep “Sleeping well is important because sleep affects your brain function and also your body's healing – so how readily it heals, and how strong you feel too. Sleep at night is when all the repairs happen in your body, so if you’re not getting enough, you’re going to be prone to injury,” she says.

Support wellbeing naturally. In the natural health industry, when we think of antioxidants our minds often turn to the herbal compound curcumin found within a common kitchen seasoning – turmeric. This is for good reason.
MORE ACTIVE. 185 X BETTER BIOAVAILABILITY. FASTER ABSORBED.*
SOLGAR Full Spectrum Curcumin This spice, sourced from a root of a low-lying shrub in the eastern parts of Africa and Asia, turmeric has been used for hundreds of years in the earliest recorded medicinal practice of Ayurvedic medicine for a range of maladies. Host to a few plant chemicals, curcumin has been the most documented for its antioxidant support for overall well being and health. But curcumin is not that easily metabolised by the body. In fact, only a very small percentage of curcumin actually is taken up in the digestive tract when turmeric is consumed. One of the problems with ‘native state’ curcumin (the form found directly from turmeric) is that it is a lipid soluble nutrient. Lipid (or fat) soluble nutrients need to go through a natural process of micellation before being brought through the digestive wall. This process bundles the lipid soluble molecules in a coating of phospholipids. This allows these special nutrients to become more like a water-soluble nutrient and blend with the watery environment in the gut. This micellation process requires the presence of bile, manufactured by the liver and released by the gallbladder. As expected, for the body to manufacture a substance it requires the ingredients, also known as nutrients. These unfortunately are not always readily available, so bile production can be limited at times, based on diet, exposure to toxins, and/or chemical/ pharmaceutical interference.
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional. Solgar NZ Limited, Auckland. *Compared to standard curcumin from turmeric
Once the micellation process has been completed, these curcumin bundles can then be introduced to the specialised cells along the walls of the small intestines – the sites of absorption. Here is where curcumin comes up against its next challenge. The sites of absorption along the intestinal wall have gaps only about 50nm (nanometres) wide and a lot of the naturally ‘packaged’ curcumin is bigger than this and won’t fit into these gaps. This means that these micelles can only be absorbed through selected areas along the gut walls, again reducing the potential for absorption even greater. So, what is a person to do when they want to increase their uptake of curcumin? This is where science comes to the rescue. The Scientists working for Solgar have developed a specialised curcumin product that matches the biological function of the body (micellation), and have been able to produce curcumin ‘bundles’ that fit into the absorption gaps all along the intestinal wall. All the processes required for curcumin to be extracted from the turmeric, packaged into micelles, and made into a water-soluble substance for easy absorption is complete and presented in an easy to take gel cap. And even better, to match the bioavailable quantity that is found in only one of Solgar’s Full Spectrum Curcumin 185x, you would need to take 20-25 capsules of native-state curcumin! Studies have also shown that this form of curcumin hits peak absorption rates within one hour of consumption, and is detectable in the blood even after 24 hours, making Solgar’s Full Spectrum Curcumin an easy to take, one-a-day, way to increase the levels of this documented antioxidant supporter of overall health and wellbeing.

Beat the bugs. The natural ways to fight off viruses. Even when we try our best to keep our immunity up, sometimes the cold weather gets too much and the bugs can strike. CHS and Tonic Health naturopath Serena Donaldson talks us through the natural remedies to turn to in times of need.
Although we’re heading into the cooler months, the change in season doesn’t mean our lives slow down. Winter can still be an incredibly demanding time of year, with work, family, social and sports commitments to juggle. CHS naturopath Serena Donaldson says the downside of this temperature change is cold and flu viruses seem to thrive in the cool winter air, which causes people to get run down and sick more often.
In order to stay strong and protected from winter bugs, Serena recommends people maintain a healthy gut. “As about 70 to 80 percent of your immune system lies in the digestive tract, it is so important to make sure the microflora in your gut are thriving,” she says. This can be done through adding fermented foods to your diet, such as
6
sauerkraut, miso or kombucha. If those foods aren’t quite suited to your tastes, a probiotic supplement is also an option. But if the winter illness is already beginning to take hold, there are natural alternatives to turn to over cold or flu pills. Serena says it’s best to act as soon as signs of a virus begin showing. “Get as much sleep and rest as possible so the body can focus on healing itself, but sometimes we need to give our bodies a boost.” “As I come into contact with a lot of sick people in-store over winter, I take a multivitamin and a probiotic daily to prevent illness, and find this combination excellent.” If you’re already in the depths of a virus, Serena recommends buying a good vitamin C supplement to boost immune cells, a sinus clearing product, such as an oil, to help clear blocked sinuses and boost immunity, as well as an immune defence supplement.
The best ways to fight off the bugs: •
Maintaining a healthy gut through fermented foods or a probiotic.
•
Ensuring you get lots of rest.
•
Taking a daily vitamin C supplement.
•
Taking an immune defence supplement.
•
Taking a sinus clearing product.

Drop and give me zen: why people love yoga (and why you should too) Yoga is a spiritual practice that dates back centuries but in the present day, the ancient ritual has taken on many variations: naked yoga, beer yoga, you name it. So, how it did it get to be so popular, and how do you know which type of yoga is right for you? Yoga is a variety of physical, mental and spiritual practices which originated in ancient India. Different styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation, all with the aim of getting the body, mind and breath in harmony with one another. The exact date yoga came into existence is hard to trace, as some of the earliest writings on it were destroyed or lost. Most think that yoga began in India some 5000 years ago, while other researchers believe it’s up to 10,000 years old. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’, meaning to ‘yoke’ or ‘join together’, which many interpret as meaning that yoga is a union of the mind and body. Jaggi Vasudev, a leading yoga guru from India, believes that in present day, around two billion people in the world practice yoga. So, why has this practice grown more popular than ever, despite being thousands of years old? Advocates for yoga say the possibilities are endless, and whatever you may be looking for – be it weight loss, mood management, or even a boost in creativity – yoga is the answer.
It’s also inclusive, which explains why it has spread to the far corners of the world. Yoga isn’t restricted to any one religion, belief system or community. It’s viewed as a tool to achieve inner and outer wellbeing, regardless of a person’s faith.
Yoga is so widespread now that it has branched out into many weird and wonderful variations. As well as this, it has many physical benefits, such as increasing strength, flexibility and balance. Medical studies have also suggested it can help combat conditions such as arthritis, asthma and high blood pressure. And in terms of mental health, the results are positive too. In one study, people that underwent a nine-week yoga course experienced a significant reduction in anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts by the end of it. Yoga is so widespread now that it has branched out into many weird and wonderful variations. Some of the more unusual derivations include beer yoga, nude yoga, laughter yoga and even, believe it or not, goat yoga. So, what type of yoga best suits you? Take our quiz to find out.

The new generation of all natural plant-based formulations. With modern science backing many plants’ medicinal value, there is growing demand for effective natural medicine without preservatives and chemicals. But Nature’s goodness can sometimes be hard to swallow. The bitter taste of many traditional formulations often deters those new to plant-based medicine, and can be especially off-putting for young children. The challenge is to harness the medicinal powers of plants in a formula that’s easy to take and has a familiar flavour.

Health is wealth. Nourish founder Abby Soares talks her journey from nurse to nutritionist. Abby Soares is an advocate for natural health, but her background is unusual in the way it brings together the best of the both worlds: decades of training and experience as a registered nurse, and a newly forged career in nutrition. Abby is the founder of Nourish Health and Nutrition, a nutrition and wellness coaching company that operates out of the Connection Wellness Centre in Silverdale. She says her passion for natural health was passed down from her Mum, who always bought organic food and cooked with fresh produce from her vegetable garden when she was growing up. Abby initially went down the medical route, studying a bachelor of health science at AUT University and working as a registered nurse in children and women’s health for 16 years. and be happy and engage with children instead of feeling tired and exhausted.” Abby now works full time as a nutritionist specialising in gut health, women’s health and low immunity. As far as diagnoses go, Abby says her nursing background helps her with more complex clients. “But overall, I’m much happier and really enjoy working in primary health and treating the root causes as opposed to treating the symptoms, while showing people they have the power to be in control of their health.” husband Scott (they have three sons – Riley, 10, Jesse, 12 and Josh, 7) she realised the importance of targeting the root causes of health issues through nutrition. “I really liked nursing, but I felt like I was working as an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff and I wanted to work more in preventative health,” she says. “I became so passionate about nutrition when my kids were young, that I felt like I wanted to focus on that – on educating mums on how to nourish their children, while teaching mums how to have energy and strong immune systems
"I became so passionate about nutrition when my kids were young, that I felt like I wanted to focus on that" She says in the world we live in today, it’s hard for people to make informed choices about food, considering most are time poor and the processed options are easier to grab off the shelf. “I rarely shop in the supermarket now,” Abby says. “I get food from the market and buy from a local organic shop or directly from an organic co-op.
She says this is where natural health stores or organic stores are great, as they eliminate the temptation. “Ninety percent of the food in those shops is wholefood, so you will be tripped up a lot less by shopping there rather than a supermarket.”

Tag teaming for winter immunity. With the cooler weather sending us grabbing for coats or thermal undies, and winter ills and chills in evidence around us, it is time to take stock of who you have on your immunity team to keep you ahead of the game.
LIFESTREAM Ultra Immunity Defence
LIFESTREAM Ultra Immunity Response
We know that a good football game relies on putting a great defence plan in place and having a multi-talented team to quickly respond to the challenges that arise on the field. The analogy works when thinking about our immunity, to keep us playing in the champion’s league all winter instead of being side-lined. Taking a herbal supplement to support immunity can help with a strong defence against the ills and chills, or aid in a faster recovery from an immune system that responds quickly to bring us back into balance. Lifestream Ultra Immunity Defence is a natural, powerful combination of clinically researched ResistAid® and Echinacea for triple action year-round immune defence. It supports our first and second line of defence, provides antioxidant protection, and is a prebiotic to support the growth of good bacteria for optimal gut health and immunity. If you have already had a bout of being under the weather don’t think you have left it too late to get working on your defence - there is no “off ” season when it comes to immunity. Now if you have woken up feeling like you don’t want to get out and perform today, the opposing team has invaded the field, then it’s time to tag in Lifestream Ultra Immunity Response. It is a team of traditionally used herbs for use at the onset of ills and chills, and for allergens. It provides triple action support for sinuses, throat and lung health when the body’s immune system is under attack - helping to loosen mucus, soothe the throat, and clear airways. It has unique fast release Plantcaps® to help provide a fast acting immune response when acute immune support is needed.

Always tired despite getting enough sleep? You may have a mineral deficiency. Minerals are often overlooked but they are essential to the human body to perform numerous biological functions such as converting carbohydrates to energy, maintaining bone strength, balancing the body’s pH level, supporting the immune system, and more.
NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLY SOURCED
BIOTRACE CMD Concentrated Mineral Drops Although the human body is a highly sophisticated machine, it doesn’t produce all the vitamins and minerals that are essential to our health. Mineral deficiency in the Western world is becoming more common due to pollution, industrialization, and intensive farming using synthetic fertilisers, which may cause toxic metal accumulation in the body and toxic metal competes with minerals for absorption. Taking non-ionic or synthetic mineral supplements or drugs can also upset the equilibrium of minerals in the body. The good news is that we can replenish vitamins and minerals through a healthy diet, drinking water and topping up with ionic supplements. An exceptional source of minerals and trace elements is BioTrace CMD (Concentrated Mineral Drops) that is both natural and sourced sustainably. Adding a few drops to your water allows you to mineralize your water easily and affordably. It contains up to 72 naturally occurring minerals and trace minerals, is low in sodium, high in magnesium and is safe to use for the whole family. BioTrace CMD supports mineral balance in the body with a mineral composition close to healthy human plasma. It also supports pH balance with a naturally alkaline pH of 7.9 – 8.3.
Symptoms of mineral deficiency and its associated minerals are: •• Fatigue/Poor Concentration (Zinc, Calcium, Chromium, Iron, & Magnesium) •• Weakness (Boron, Calcium, Iron, & Magnesium) •• Muscle Cramps (Calcium, Magnesium, & Potassium) •• Numbness (Calcium & Magnesium) •• Hair Loss (Selenium & Zinc) •• Anemia (Iron) •• Nausea (Calcium & Magnesium) •• Slow Wound Healing (Zinc) •• Sugar Cravings/Weight Gain (Chromium)
18
BioTrace’s Elemental range provides essential minerals that allows targeting of specific mineral deficiencies such as boron, chromium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Knowing your mineral deficiencies, imbalances and toxic mineral excesses is vital to understanding many wellness issues. But how do you find out your mineral levels? A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a great place to start and choosing the right provider for your HTMA makes all the difference. MediScan HTMAs are performed at a respected independent laboratory at the University of Western Australia which specializes in mineral analysis. MediScan uses two separate spectrometers giving more accurate readings across the total elements. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis when interpreted correctly gives you all the information you need so it’s important for staff interpreting the results to hold high qualifications and follow rigorous quality processes in the laboratory. Talk to your local Community Health Store about getting a hair sample collected for a MediScan HTMA test today. For maximum energy, the body also needs CoEnzyme Q10 which is a fat soluble antioxidant required by almost every cell in the body for cellular energy production. Being an antioxidant, CoQ10 can help protect the body from free radicals, oxidative stress and the ageing process. Research has also shown that CoQ10 can support heart health, healthy serum lipid levels and normal blood pressure. BioTrace CoQ10 Ultra is a clean and pure source of CoQ10 that is vegan, chemical free and in a competitively high dose to support optimal energy levels. Rachael Nielsen from The Health Shop. We have many experts within the Community Health Store family. This issue, we meet The Health Shop, New Plymouth owner Rachael Nielsen. Rachael's a registered nurse and creates her own health products, including a customer favourite called Poo Brew. Hi, Rachael. Tell us a bit about you? How did you become owner of the Health Store and part of the CHS group? I’m a mother of three and a grandma of nine grandchildren, and have had the store in centre city for 30 years this November and I love being able to help people get healthy and stay healthy. I am a Bowen practitioner – I did a Bachelor of Nursing when I was 50. This has helped me think from both sides with health issues. I started in the store wanting to get into natural health to help people keep healthy. What makes your store special? My store is special as we really do try and help our customers. If we haven’t got what they want or need, we will try and get that product for them. My store has trained staff, like a naturopath, herbalist, beautician, nutritionist, so we really do try and help. Tell us more about some of the products you make. I formulated the Poo Brew 25 years ago when I practiced iridology. A big percentage of my patients had problems with their gut, bowel and nutrition. So, I mixed up different herbs and powders,

these worked really well and they told their friends and soon, we had to get it made in a factory. The idea behind the Poo Brew is to heal the gut, clean the bowel and nutritionally support the body. What do you love about your job? I love being able to help people. When they come back and say, “I feel so much better, why haven’t I come in before?” that makes my day. What I do is not rocket science, it’s a matter of listening to people. A lot of times it’s deficiencies of iron, B12 or magnesium – the basic stuff. I look at their blood tests and go from there. Is there one person or case where your advice or your own products have really helped someone that stands out to you? One stands out. A lady in her late 60s came in recently. She had a virus six months ago and been really poorly since then. I looked at her blood tests and her iron and B12 was really low and she was very constipated after all the medications. I put her on a programme, phoned her the next day and she said she felt bit better, a week later and she is able to do her housework and get out in the garden. I’m delighted she can carry on enjoying her life in her own home.
Q&A Got a question you want answered about your health and wellbeing? Send your questions to editor@ communityhealthstores.co.nz and each issue, our expert will do their best to answer them. I’ve been told that Bowen Therapy could help my shoulder sprain, would you recommend this as treatment? How does it help? Yes, Bowen is well worth a try, all they have to lose is their pain. Bowen realigns the body and gets the body to heal itself. My husband has problems sleeping at night, what are the best natural supplements to help him get more sleep? We recommend magnesium and other herbs, but we need to talk to that person first to make sure what we recommend does not interfere with medications they may be taking. How can I get more magnesium in my diet? Magnesium is deficient in our soil in New Zealand, so it’s quite hard to get it via your food. I recommend a supplement. There are many types of magnesium. A few customers have said they can’t take magnesium as it gives them loose bowel motions. This is because they are taking the wrong one, so always talk to us to find out what type you may need.
